INSIGHT VACATIONS REMEMBERS VETERANS THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CENTRE FOR BATTLEFIELD ARCHEOLOGY Insight Vacations (www.insightvacations.com) has announced that as part of its commitment to The Travel Corporation Conservation Foundation, it will be sponsoring the University of Glasgows Centre for Battlefield Archaeology on a new archaeological project on the site of the Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin in the town of Peronne in the Somme region of France. The project is part of Insight Vacations on-going partnership with University of Glasgows Centre for Battlefield Archaeology, a pioneering initiative to uncover and preserve some of Europes most important battlefield sites. The Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin project, which began excavation this past September, is focusing on St. Quentin Wood, which was the scene of intense fighting between Australian and German troops in August and September in 1918. The battle played a key role in the final defeat of the Germans on the Western Front, however, until now it has never been subject to any form of archaeological

investigation leaving artifacts undiscovered and many questions yet to be answered. The first season of excavation will examine the communication trench, the relationship of the main trench and support trenches, and the extent of archaeological deposits with the trench system. The project will also aim to provide a topographic survey of the site for the benefit of future site operations. Veterans Day is vital to the memory of the sacrifices and achievements made by those who have served their countries and we feel it is important to learn from the lessons of past conflicts and wars, said Marc Kazlauskas, President of Insight Vacations. This is why we are extremely proud of our partnership with the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology, as the archaeological component of our battlefield projects will provide the basis for the creation of a heritage trail and from this we hope to provide a greater understanding of the impact of war on our history. The Centre for Battlefield Archaeology has earned an international reputation for innovation and excellence in the study of battlefield archaeology. In 2007, its involvement with the Australian Army helped locate previously untraced mass graves of soldiers buried at the 1916 Battle of Fromelles in France. The recently inaugurated cemetery was featured as a special visit on selected 2011 Insight Vacations tours.
