5 THE IMPACT OF MEDIA TO THE YOUTH OF TODAY

THE PROBLEM

A.

Introduction

People in this generation are fond of using the different kinds of media in order to achieve their various purposes. Modernization occurs nowadays. The modernization includes the different media that people are using now. People around the globe use media everyday. Teenagers, in todays time, are fond of using the media because these media are their sources of getting the latest trends of today and learn more about the things around. The researcher conducted this study because she wants the people to know on what is in the media that teenagers are fond of using it. She also wants the reader to know the bad and good effects of the different kinds of media to the youth.

The research is all about the effects of the different media on the people who had become the hope of the future, the teenagers. When the media are invented, the lives of people are getting more colorful than before. This study determines the teenagers if they are getting addicted on using the media or not. It also helps them to be aware of the effects, the advantages and

6 the disadvantages of media to them. This study also helps the parents to be informed on the ways on how to control the teenagers attitudes.

In this research paper, the reader would learn more about how the media affected the lives of every teenager. The media had a great force to encourage each person to use it. The teenagers had more media exposure than their parents had when they were growing up. Hopefully, after reading this research paper, the youth are more educated about how the media can affect their lives. Use this knowledge to stay safe and healthy.

B.

Statement of the problem

The problem occurs when we consider that during the teenage years, the media becomes a youths predominant influence. It causes repetitive messages to be soaked-up into a persons brain messages which when pooled together can significantly affect a persons overall sponge. Eventually, the medias reoccurring message could stimulate the emotional section of the brain and could negatively change a persons behavior causing youth to compromise or totally ignore their social and spiritual upbringing. While the media is not the sole determiner of the sponge, it can significantly compromise it.

7 The researcher aims to deliver the entire and comprehensive study of the main idea. In order to accomplish it, she needs these following questions as a guide:

1. What is the literal meaning of the word media? 2. What are the different types of media? 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of media to the society? 4. What are the effects of the different types of media on the youth when it comes to their academic performances, health, attitude and their likes? 5. What are the tips in using the media in a safer way?

C.

Purpose of the study

Many people are fond of using the media in various reasons: to be entertained, to be informed about the latest situations, and others. The researcher conducted this study because she wants the people to know on what is in the media that teenagers are fond of using it. All people know that the media existed when the parents of the teenagers are born. As years passed, the media upgraded and became more colorful. She also wants the reader to know the bad and good effects of the different kinds of media to the youth. If

8 the reader is a teenager; this can bring the teenager to live a more colorful life because he or she would know what is bad from good when it comes to the media.

D.

Significance of the study

This study gives information on what is in the media that the teenagers of today cannot stop using it. This research paper aims the researcher to deliver to the readers the importance of knowing the impact of the different types of media on the youth of today.

This study determines the teenagers if they are getting addicted on using the media or not. Teenagers just want to use these media for a main reason: to be entertained. Sometimes, teenagers get so entertained that they will also imitate what the see or hear on the media and sometimes, they imitate such bad things. It also helps them to be aware of the effects, the advantages and the disadvantages of media to them. If they become aware of these things, they would have self discipline to control themselves from some bad implications of the different types of media. It does not only help the teenagers. This study also helps the parents to be informed on the ways on how to control the teenagers attitudes. The parents could also know on what is in the media that teenagers cannot help on using it.

9 E. Scope and delimitation

This study holds the different beneficial and harmful effects of the different types of media to the youth of today and on how to control the rapid usage of these media.

The research paper covers such topics as:

1. The definition of media 2. The types of media 3. The advantages and disadvantages of media to the society 4. The effects of the overuse of media to the youth of today 5. Tips on how to use the media in a safer way

This study is conducted for almost three months, from August 2011 to November 2011.

10 F. Methodology

The researcher depended on various resources for her aim to deliver a complete and detailed study. Most of her informations came from the most common resource that teenagers nowadays use the Internet in order to gain more facts and informations about the study. She also used some library resources such as the dictionary and the encyclopedia in order for her vocabulary skills to be enhanced. Without these resources, the researcher would not be able to deliver well her research paper and would not answer all the questions stated on the statement of the problem.

G.

Definition of terms

To facilitate the understanding of the different data and analyses being used throughout the study, the researcher enumerates below the terminologies deemed important to the study, but whose usage may be different from the denotative meaning.

1.

Broadcasting distribution of audio and video content to a dispersed

audience via broadcast radio, broadcast television, or other technologies. Receiving parties may include the general public or a

relatively large subset of thereof. It could also be for purposes of private

11 recreation, non-commercial exchange of messages, experimentation, selftraining, and emergency communication such as amateur (ham) radio and amateur television (ATV).
1

2.

Youth generally refers to a time of life that is neither childhood nor

adulthood, but rather somewhere in-between. also identifies a particular mindset of attitude. Youth is an

alternative word to the scientifically-oriented adolescent and the common terms of teen and teenager. Another common title for youth is young person or young people.
2

3.

Common Sense Media national organization led by concerned parents and

individuals with experience in child advocacy, public policy, education, media and entertainment. The members of the staff, Boards of Directors, and Board of

Advisors represent leading research, academic and policy institutions as well as the business community. The members have a broad range of views and backgrounds, but they all share a passion for media and for kids. 3

4.

RAND Corporation Research And Development

12 a nonprofit global policy think tank first formed to offer

research and analysis to the United States armed forces by Douglas Aircraft Company. currently financed by the U.S. government and private

endowment, corporations including the healthcare industry, universities and private individuals. aims for interdisciplinary and quantitative problem solving

via translating theoretical concepts from formal economics and the hard sciences into novel applications in other areas; that is, via applied science and operations research. RAND has been led since 1989 by Dr. James Thomson, a physicist.

CHAPTER II

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

A.

Definition of media

Media is the plural word of medium. The word medium comes from the Latin word Mitch which means middle.
1

In communications, media are the storage and transmission channels or tools used to store and deliver information or data. It is often referred to as synonymous with mass media or news media, but may refer to a single medium used to communicate any data for any purpose.
2

In general, "media" refers to various means of communication. For example, television, radio, and the newspaper are different types of media. The term can also be used as a collective noun for the press or news reporting agencies. In the computer world, "media" is also used as a collective noun, but refers to different types of data storage options.

14 B. Types of media

1.

Television The etymology of the word has a mixed Latin and Greek origin,

meaning "far sight": Greek tele, far, and Latin visio, sight.

Television is sometimes called the device that brings the world into the home. TV provides millions of home viewers with a wide variety of entertainment, information, and special events.
2

Television, also called TV, is one of our most important means of communication. It brings pictures and sounds from around the world into millions of homes.

1

15 2. Radio

The etymology of "radio" or "radiotelegraphy" reveals that it was called "wireless telegraphy", which was shortened to "wireless" in Britain. The prefix radio-, in the sense of wireless transmission, was first recorded in the word radioconductor, a description provided by the French physicist douard Branly in 1897. It is based on the verb to radiate (in Latin "radius" means "spoke of a wheel, beam of light, ray").
1

Radio is one of the most important means of communication. It enables people to send words, music, codes and other signals to any part of the world.
2

3.

Film

A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. 3

16 4. Print

a.

Newspaper

Newspaper is a publication devoted chiefly to presenting and commenting on the news. Newspaper provides an excellent means of keeping well informed on current events. They also play a vital role in shaping public opinion.
1

b.

Magazines

Magazine is a collection of articles or stories or both - published at regular intervals. Most magazines also include illustrations. Magazines are sometimes also called periodicals, and those that deal with academic subjects are called journals.

Magazines provide a wide variety of information, opinion and entertainment. For example, they may cover current events and fashions, discuss foreign affairs, or describe how to repair appliances or prepare food.

1

17 Magazines, like newspapers, represent the works of many writers. But magazines differ from newspaper in form and content. Magazines are designed to be kept much longer than newspapers. For this reason, most magazines are smaller and are printed on better paper. Many have covers and a binding of staples or stitching. in content, magazines have less concern with daily, rapidly changing events than newspapers do.
1

5.

Internet

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail. 2

1

18 6. Photograph

A photograph (often shortened to photo) is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic imager such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see.
1

The word "photograph" was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek phos, meaning "light", and graph, meaning "drawing, writing", together meaning "drawing with light".

19 C. Advantages and disadvantages of media to the society

1. Advantages

The different kinds of media greatly affected the lives of the society especially the youth of today. The media have advantages to the youth.

Media not only helps the youth to become aware of the current events but also allows them to evaluate the burning issues. A greater percentage of youth related to mass communication and journalism are using media as a platform to display society's views and feelings. The youth in any part of the world can utilize this platform to communicate their objectives.
1

Through the media, people can find out about important news, listen to favorite music or watch favorite TV show.

They are advantageous in the field of education and keeping up with world events, exposure to different cultural events, broadening of experiences etc. and its a positive form of entertainment in moderation too.

Siji Abraham, Impact of Media on Youth, Papyrus Clubs, 2 Nov. 2011 <http://colleges.papyrusclubs.com/sipuc/voice/impact-media-youth>. 2 Ibid.
1

20 2. Disadvantages

When we think of the disadvantages, we may say that the media creates, in many youth desensitization to violence, exposure to drug abuse, stress from certain types of media, possibility in increasing the body weight if one spends too much of time in front of T.V. or computer, potential lack of social skills among others.
2

Unfortunately, most of the media the youth are exposed to do not show people in a realistic way. Characters on TV are often shown with unrealistic "perfect" bodies. Women are shown as too thin and men are shown with larger-than-life muscles. Photographs in magazines or billboards are edited on the computer to erase flaws and imperfections. Even if you know that what you see is not normal or not real, it can still impact you.

21 D. Effects of media on youth

1. Academic performance

According to Common Sense Media, kids who watch a lot of TV have smaller vocabularies and lower test scores in school. Also, these kids do not read as well as kids who watch less TV.

Another study shows that the people with the highest degrees watched less TV as kids and teenagers. A third study shows that different forms of media affect schoolwork differently:

Third-graders who had TVs in their bedrooms did worse on their schoolwork than their peers who did not have TVs in their bedroom.

Third graders with computers in their bedrooms did better than their peers without computers in their bedrooms.

1

22

2. Health

Did you know that if you watch more than two hours of TV each day, you have a higher chance of being obese when you grow up? If you are sitting in front of the TV or computer, you are probably not exercising. Getting enough exercise is one key to stay healthy and prevent obesity.

In general, people also tend to eat more when watching TV than sitting at the dinner table because the TV distracts them. People may be full but not realize it, or they might unconsciously eat more when they see a commercial for something that looks appetizing.
1

Julia Ransohoff, Teens and the Media, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Jan. 2009. 2 Nov. 2011 < http://www.pamf.org/teen/life/bodyimage/media.html>.
1

23

3. Likes Advertisements are everywhere TV commercials, pop-up ads on the computer, magazines ads and billboards and they have a huge impact on what people buy. Even though it is mostly adults who spend the money, commercials are often aimed at kids. If the advertising for a product is successful, kids will ask their parents to buy the product.

Marketers have obviously found success in advertising to kids: children ages 12 and under convince their parents to spend more than $500 million a year. Some teens are able to buy the products they see advertised on their own.
1

Many teens want to be like the characters they see on TV. Also, some forms of media do not show the real diversity of the world. According to Common Sense Media, 74 percent of the characters on TV are Caucasian, and 64 percent of video game characters are males.
2

Julia Ransohoff, Teens and the Media, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Jan. 2009. 2 Nov. 2011 < http://www.pamf.org/teen/life/bodyimage/media.html>. 2 Ibid.
1

24

5. Attitude

Because of these media, teenagers sometimes tend to become lazy. These media can easily catch their attention and teenagers tend to not mind about other people. They tend also to disrespect the elders especially their parents. For example, a teenage girl is watching her favorite artist on TV. Her mother asked her to wash the dishes but the teenage girl refused it because she is focused on what she is watching.

A study done by the RAND Corporation shows that teens are twice as likely to have sex or engage in sexual acts if they see similar sexual behavior in the media. Many objects in the media that involve sex target teens. Reality TV shows and teen dramas often portray the "cool kids" as the ones who are having sex.
1

Julia Ransohoff, Teens and the Media, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Jan. 2009. 2 Nov. 2011 < http://www.pamf.org/teen/life/bodyimage/media.html>.
1

25

The media teaches kids that violence is acceptable. In video games, the way to beat an opponent is to punch, kick or knock him out. In some video games, you might even kill your opponent. In movies, the good guy wins when he violently defeats his enemy.

A study showed that 4-year olds have a greater chance of being bullies when they are older if they watch a lot of violent TV. Seeing violent behavior on TV or through other forms of media can also make teens act more violently.

Tips on using the different types of media in a good way

To prevent the youth from being so addicted to the different types of media that they might also imitate some bad doings, here are some tips for using the media safely. Separate media from meals. Do not eat in front of the TV. Do not watch TV while doing homework. Set aside a part of your day for non-educational media, such as TV, and keep the rest of your day separate. Do not go over your limit. Common Sense Media suggests that you do not spend more than one or two hours in front of a screen TV, computer and movies each day. Limit media in your room. Keep TVs and computers in common spaces, such as the family room or den. Make sure visitors are aware of your family's media rules. For example, the babysitter should know when you and your siblings can use media. Once your media limit is up, find an activity that exercises your brain or body. Spend one minute doing something mentally or physically active for each minute you are exposed to the media. When you see an advertisement, think about whom it is targeting, whether it is realistic, and what makes it appealing. Be able to separate fiction from reality in the media and use your judgment.

27

Here are some more tips on using the television. Family viewing gives children a choice of what to watch. Restrict violent videos and DVD movies. Encourage and model ways to play that do not involve violence. Watch with the children and talk about the programs. Refuse to let children see shows known to be violent.
1

Here are some tips when it comes to electronic games. Pay attention to ratings. Read the literature that accompanies video game products. Discuss game content with children. Observe children playing and periodically play along. Assure adult supervision for arcade game playing. Select games that promote problem solving, skill building, and cooperation, rather than violence.
2

Here are some tips on using the internet safely. Ask your Internet provider or computer store about programs that block access to adult oriented sites, chat rooms, and bulletin boards. Keep the computer in a high traffic part of the house. Find websites you think your children will enjoy and bookmark them. Teach your children about netiquette appropriate on-line behavior. Everything on the Internet is not true.

The parents have a great responsibility that they should guide their children when it comes to using of media. Here are some points for the parents to do for their children. Watch or read the news with your kids. Talk with them about what they see and hear. Acknowledge your childs fears and reassure them. Explore the facts with your child. Select kid-friendly news sources for your child (such as Nick News on Nickelodeon or a local station committed to family friendly newscasts).

CHAPTER III

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

A. Summary

Media is one of the creations intelligent people created. There are different types of media. These are the television, radio, film and video, print journals such as newspapers and magazines, internet and photograph. With these media, people can be informed with the latest news that is happening not only in this country but also the entire world as well.

People an also be entertained with all the shows on the television, songs they here on the radio, cool facts on the magazines and others. But sometimes, people tend to abuse not only themselves but others also because media sometimes badly affects people in their academic performance, health and their social life.

In order to prevent such things, teens must always bear in mind all the tips that are given in this research paper because these tips can help them, even in a little way, to become successful in the future.

30

B. Conclusion

These media made a great impact not only to the teenagers but also to the entire people around the globe. Media, in today's world, have both positive and negative implications. As far as youth is concerned one thing should be kept in mind, that it depends upon the youth to reap the positive/negative outcomes from media. Media not only helps the youth to become aware of the current events but also allows them to evaluate the burning issues. A greater percentage of youth related to mass communication and journalism are using media as a platform to display society's views and feelings. The youth in any part of the world can utilize this platform to communicate their objectives.

It seems clear that media is about options, it is what you make of it. If the youth and adults choose to take the positive aspects they can do just that and if they choose to take the negative aspects they can do all that . However the problems may simply be that young adults are too easily affected by the ill-effects of media. Anything must be taken in moderation for it to be most effective.

Siji Abraham, Impact of Media on Youth, Papyrus Clubs, 2 Nov. 2011 <http://colleges.papyrusclubs.com/sipuc/voice/impact-media-youth>. 2 Ibid.
1

31 Stronger research is necessary to make the correlation between media and its influence on youth; however, there seems to be enough research to justify a concern and a preventative approach to the issues of media influence.
1

Proper media discernment and evaluation processes must be engrained into the youths minds to allow them to better cope with the graphic violence, overt sexuality, morally mixed and negative messages.
2

C. Recommendation

Technology made a great impact on the changing lives of the youth of this generation. These technologies, such as the media, are the cause of modernization.

Glen E. Dawursk, Jr., Medias Influence on Youth, Media and Youth, 30 Nov. 2007, 2 Nov. 2011 <http://www.mediaandyouth.com/>. 2 Ibid.
1

32 For these media, the researcher would rather advise the youth to have self discipline. If the teens have enough self discipline, they would really know if the articles in the print journals like the newspapers or the shows in the televisions are bad or good to watch. If they also have self discipline, for sure, they will not imitate the dangerous things they are watching and imply in life the values they have learned through the use of these media in reality.

For the parents, the only advice the researcher would tell is to guide their children in watching, reading or hearing such programs or articles in the different types of media. Parental guidance is one of the best solutions in the safety use of media because the parents are the ones explaining to their children the things that children do not understand about the shows or the articles in the different media.
