01) First Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme:

Mother Mary, Our Mother and Mother of the Church 04) Opening Prayer: God our Father, we thank and praise You for the gift of Mary the Mother of Your son Jesus. The humble servant of the Lord that she was, open to Your will in total surrender is a model of life that touches us ever deeply. Through her intercession, we earnestly pray that You help us to respond with a generous yes to Your will and to whatever mission is entrusted to us. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading 07) Reflection: According to the Second Vatican Council, the Blessed Virgin Mary participates actively in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ and hence she is truly our mother. She took the active role of the Mother of Christ in our Salvation history to gain eternal life for us all. Rightly therefore we call and honour her as the Mother of all humankind. Jesus, while on the Cross, said to His beloved disciple John, Here is your mother and John received her as his mother. John represented the whole humankind and made her the mother of us all. According to St Bernard, If we call God our Father, then Mary is truly our mother because she is the mother of the Son of God. God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son to die for us on the Cross. Jesus loved us so much that He gave his own mother as our mother. St Stanislaus Kostka is one of the many saints who loved the Blessed Virgin Mary more than himself. Before any work or activity, he knelt before the portrait of our Lady and received her blessing. Whenever he prayed to Mother Mary or offered rosaries, his face lit up with a heavenly light. The Church is the Body of Christ of which we are all many parts. If Mary is the Mother of Jesus, she is also the Mother of the Church. Mary not only lives in heaven, she is actively present in the Church. She does her work in the Church so perfectly that her will becomes the will of the Church. She loves and cares for the Church as her child. It is rightly said that Jesus is Marys first child. The Church and the whole humankind is her second child. As a hen gathers her chickens under her wings to protect them from dangers so also Mother Mary keeps us always in her protection. 08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mary, our Mother, Intercede for us. a) Mary our Mother and Mother of the Church, fashion our hearts so that we may receive the Word of God in faith and contemplate its truth in the daily events of our lives. Our response.. b) Mary our Mother and Mother of the Church, fill our hearts with enduring compassion for all who suffer and are victims of injustice. Our response.. c) Mary our Mother and Mother of the Church, sanctify our hearts so that we may pursue integrity of word and deed in our lives. e) Mary our Mother and Mother of the Church, instil wisdom in our hearts that we may remain obedient to the Gospel of eternal life. Our response.. 09) Concluding Prayer: Holy Mary, Mother of God, Immaculate Virgin who has received from God all power in heaven and on earth Queen of angels and of humans, refuge of sinners, patroness of our nation obtain for us the grace to live and die according to the values of the Gospel that we may one day be worthy of eternal happiness. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Second Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, a Model of Courage and Confidence 04) Opening Prayer: Mother Mary, mother of God, you had the courage and confidence to bear Jesus the son of God. You said yes to the Lord forever. Mary our loving Mother, the courage was within you to bear the grief of your Son, dying on the cross. Merciful mother, today as we reflect on the theme, Mother Mary, A Model of Courage and Confidence grant us the grace to seek courage and confidence, as you did in your life and be fruitful in the service of God. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading: John 19, 26-27 07) Reflection: Mary is a model of courage and confidence to us. St Bernard says, The name of the virgin was Mary which means star of the sea. For she is that noble star of Jacob whose rays enlighten the whole world. Her life is a perfect example of the heroic self-surrender to the will of God. The 7 Ss of Mary - see, search, surrender, service, struggle, sacrifice and song - speak of her vocation. Often her faith was tested and she was forced to navigate through perilous waters. Sometimes she might have considered the plans of God as haphazard and obscure, but her faith kept her committed which yielded rich fruits. The source of her confidence in the Lord was her simple yet strong faith in His mercy and goodness. Marys response is the most momentous word in history says the German writer Reinhold Schneider. God invites only the brave to follow Him. When Mary said yes to the Lord she immediately embarked on the divine yet dangerous undertaking. The sword pierced her soul many times. At a very young age she became the Mother of God. The struggle and the agony she went through to find shelter in Bethlehem and the fleeing to Egypt, gave her the experience of the life of refugees. Later the death of her husband and the parting with her son must have been more painful. Then the unjust and cruel suffering of her Son Jesus and His death on the cross must have been a real test of her faith. Still the circumstances of life never dampened her faith. Such a faith should be ours. Marys commitment to her vocation should motivate us to remain faithful to our call through thick and thin. The more the Church models her life on Mary, the more maternal she becomes and the more a believer can be reborn of God in her and achieve reconciliation, says Br Roger Schutz. Mary is our mother because Christ the Lord gave her to us as a mother. Woman, behold your son!..... Behold your mother! (John 19, 26-27) We may call upon her and ask her to intercede with God. Hence we are to live with courage and confidence, as we face the plusses and the minuses of our lives. 2

08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother Mary, Fill us with your courage and confidence. a) Mary, our Mother, Jesus wants us to take up our daily crosses and go forward with him. When you see us dragging our burdens, remind us that there is a better Christ-like way to bear it. Pray for us that we may carry todays crosses with love and courage. Our response.. b) Mary, our Mother helps us to give importance to prayer in our lives. Guide us to be humble, courageous, and confident and persevere in our vocation that we translate our beliefs into action. Our response.. c) Mary, our Mother, we pray for all women that they may not be discriminated against nor exploited in our society. We pray that looking up to you they may play their part at home and society. Our response.. d) Mary, our Mother, your example of chastity and apostolic zeal is a precious gift to us. Give us the understanding that we persevere in faith by sharing Christ with others. Our response.. e) Mary, our Mother, the thousand whys in our lives are not always the best response to God. May the Holy Spirit enlighten our hearts and minds as he enlightened yours. May we always revere Gods presence within us as another living temple of his glory. Our response.. 09) Concluding Prayer: Immaculate Mary, Mother of God, though simple and humble, yet you were called to be the Mother of Jesus and of the universe. You were chosen to be the model of courage and confidence because you accepted the unexpected and generated life among the degenerated. Mary, our Mother, your yes to the Lords call is really courageous. We too have said yes to the Lord for the service of his people; grant us the grace to be courageous and confident so that we fulfill Gods plan in our lives. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Third Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, a Model for Religious 04) Opening Prayer: Dear Mother of Jesus we pray especially for the gift of religious orders in the Church. Make us, O Mother of God, proclaim your Son in words and deeds. Give us the strength that we may truly fulfill your Sons mission in abundance. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading 07) Reflection: Mother Mary is the model for the religious and all people. When angel Gabriel appeared to her and brought the Good News, Mother Mary, without hesitation, said Yes to the will of God. That Yes was filled with courage, boldness and humility. Mother Marys Yes was once and for all throughout her life. A sense of obedience to the will of God is discovered when we pause, ponder and reflect.

When Moses encountered the burning bush, he found that the bush was not burnt, though it was enflamed with fire. So also is Mother Mary, she is called blessed virgin even though she bore Gods Son, Jesus Christ. Mother Mary not only fulfilled the prophecy but also the will of God. The Mothers heart pounded in agony when she saw her only Son on the cross, that agony could have been the greatest agony ever experienced by anyone in this world. So shall be our concern and belongingness towards our brothers and sisters to fulfill the will of God even in the difficult situations as Mother Mary did. All the Apostles were lead by Mother Mary to preach the Good News to the world. She was responsible to initiate the feeling of oneness on the day of Pentecost. So shall be our mission to initiate others and lead them to the eternal Father. By accomplishing these she stands as the heavenly Mother for all of us. 08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother Mary, Intercede for us. a) We pray for all religious communities. We pray that God may be with them and guide them to be united always so that they follow the foot steps of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our response.. b) Today we pray for all the poor and the oppressed. We pray that the love of God may energize them in order to live happy lives. Our response.. c) We pray for all the Jesuits that they may grow in the desire to serve the needs of the church with increasing unity, love and hope among all sections of people. Our response.. d) We pray for our community that we may always work in unity and integrity, and through the intercession of Mother Mary we may have good health and peace of mind. Our response.. e) We pray for our family members that through the intercession of Mary they may find joy and happiness in their work. Our response.. f) That the church and the Society of Jesus may be gifted by many new vocations. Our response.. 09) Concluding Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank you for giving us your mother as our mother. She is the mother of all the religious and all people. She loves us as she loved you. Grant us the same grace, so that we love one another, as our mother loves us. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Fourth Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, a Model for Christians. 04) Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, Mary is proclaimed happy because she is the faithful disciple of the Word made flesh. By accepting the message of an angel she became the Mother of the Lord by meditating on it in the silence of her heart. Grant that we may welcome the Word made man in our hearts. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. 4

05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading 07) Reflection: Mother Mary is the greatest model for the Vow of Obedience. Obedience is love. It needs self-sacrifice and self-surrender to be totally obedient. Mother Mary was the first disciple of Christ who surrendered herself with full trust and faith. Today, we are, however, in a new world. Modern means of communication and work demands self-sacrifice and obedience. We cannot live an easy life where there is a pressing demand for us to give our best. In order to be committed in our work, we need to have the spirit of MAGIS. Mother Mary completely surrendered herself to God and was highly obedient to the will of God. She said a total yes to the will of God because for her, doing the will of God was everything. Todays generation lives in a continuous process of change, we need to adapt our way of proceeding, in order to become the models of faith, hope and love. 08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother of our Lord, Intercede for us. a) Mary, the mother of our saviour, by the mysterious action of the Holy Spirit you showed us the courage and faith to accept the will of God and place in him alone all hope of salvation.. b) Mary, you are the true model of Christianity. You have shown us the path of willingness. You rejoiced at Gods working hands. Help us to be a perfect disciples of Christ your son.. c) Mary, our Mother, today we pray for the whole church. It is the fruit of the work of your Son. Help us to put it into practice all that your Son taught us in the gospel. Grant that we may find ourselves working as the servants of Christ in the kingdom of God.. d) Mary, you felt the agony in your heart, the pain that Christ suffered physically. Grant us the zeal and strength to carry our own crosses in our day to day life. e) Mary, our Mother, in you we put all our trust, hope and faith. You prayed together with the Apostles on the day of Pentecost. So also we pray for our vocation to the Society of Jesus which nourishes us each moment preparing us for the future mission. 09) Concluding Prayer: Blessed are you, O Mary, full of grace, virgin and mother, you shine in Christ as a model of love, of faith and of hope. Grant that turning our eyes to you and following you, we may serve God and the poor with total dedication, tirelessly spending ourselves for the world. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Fifth Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, A Courageous Woman. 04) Opening Prayer: Lord our loving Father and Mother, we thank and praise you for giving us Mary as a model of courage and strength. You looked upon Mary, your loving servant. Look upon us, poor sinners, that we may also be raised up to be your children and be as courageous as Mary was. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 5

06) Scripture Reading: Jn 19,25-27 07) Reflection: Here I am, the servant of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to your holy will. These words of Mother Mary are an inspiration to all of us to surrender ourselves completely to the Lord with complete trust and courage. Mother accepted the will of God with Obedience to redeem the humankind from the snares of bondage. She has been our source of strength in the journey of life. Our life has been enriched with the qualities of Mary, especially her humility, purity and surrender, which we practice in our daily life- Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. She suffered with Christ on the way to Calvary. At the foot of the cross, Christ gave his only mother to all of us. Indeed she is a perfect model for us to be the true Disciples of Christ under the Banner of the Cross. As we intensely prepare to celebrate the feast of our mother, let us pray that we become more and more like Christ all the days of our life as we journey along with her. 08) Intercessory Prayers: Our Response: Courageous Mother pray for us. a) Mary, model for courage, we ask you to teach us to be courageous in all our responsibilities, so that by your inspiration we may serve your Son and His people with peace and justice. b) Let us pray for our Pope, Bishops and all the Clergy. May they follow Mary and spread the good news of Your Son with courageous hearts and be guiding lights for all the people of the world. c) Courageous Mother of Jesus, we pray for all the Youth. In this modern world as we are fighting against corruption, motivate our Youth to raise their voice against all anti-social elements of the world to build a strong Nation. d) Let us pray for all women in society. In this modern generation, women have become vulnerable to exploitation. Mary, our Mother, intercede for all women who are exploited. Through your prayers may they have a fruitful life. e) Courageous Mother of Christ, we pray for all the married couples. In this modern society divorce and abortion have become common. Mother, make them understand the real meaning of marriage and help them face all the difficulties of life with a good understanding and sharing through which they may follow the example of Christ. 09) Concluding Prayer: Mary, Courageous servant of the Lord, you were made the glorious Mother of Gods son because you listened to and accepted the will of God and kept it in your heart. Help us to be the true followers of Gods word until our last breath. May we surrender ourselves completely to Jesus and do his will in our day-to-day lives, just as you did. Help us to be courageous and strong in times of trials and temptations. And after a fruitful life on earth may we be little flowers at your feet filled with fragrance in happiness eternally. 10) Angelus ************************************************

01) Sixth Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 6

02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, the First and Most Perfect Disciple. 04) Opening Prayer: All powerful and ever-loving God, as we ponder on the theme, Mary the First and Most Perfect Disciple, through her intercession, bless us abundantly and fill us with graces, so that we may rejoice at her living son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading 07) Reflection: Blessed are those who hear the word of God and assimilate it and live according to it! These words of Jesus are written in the BIBLE, after Mother Mary was praised by a woman. If this passage is read by a casual reader he might think that Jesus is speaking in contrast to the praise given to his mother. But, in fact, Jesus was adding to those praises. There is no doubt that Mother Mary is the perfect disciple of Jesus, because she heard the Word of God through Angel Gabriel and by saying, YES to the will of God, she obeyed it. Later she continued to hear the word of God through her sons life and especially through Jesus passion, death and Resurrection. Even there the Mothers Obedience was evident in her YES. This YES has made her the perfect disciple of Jesus our Master. Mother Theresa says, Our vocation is to be faithful and not to be successful. For this mother Mary is the role model who played a vital role in Gods plan and in the life of Jesus. She humbled herself in all the ways she could and she stood as a faithful servant in the life of Jesus. Let us reflect whether we are faithful to God and to his plans. Are we craving for success at the cost of our faithfulness? 08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother Mary, Help us to become true disciples of your Son. a) Mother dear, today the world looks at the Church as the source of peace and charity. It expects and longs for true imitators of Jesus your Son. So, we come to you today. Intercede for our holy father the Pope, Bishops, Clergy and all the religious, that through your intercession they may live in peace and harmony with the people. b) Mary, our Mother, you appeared to our father Ignatius in Loyola; and his devotion to you lasted till the end of his life. We ask you to intercede for all the members of the Society of Jesus that they may receive the spirit of power and love and a sound mind, so that, in all their work they may set forth Gods Glory c) Mary, our most affectionate Mother, today women are being exploited and ill treated by men and even by some women all over the world. They are being deprived of their rights. Today we specially ask you to intercede for all of them, that all people may realize their importance in the Society and may respect their Human Dignity. d) Mother, today we surrender all Christian families to you. Help them and guide them to be devout, prayerful and receive the light of your Son Jesus, who is the light of the world. May Jesus, the true light, shine through them before others. e) Mary, our loving Mother, we ask you to intercede for all the young men and women of the world. Enkindle their hearts and minds with your love. So that, through your intersession they may live a life of dedication and self sacrifice and may commit themselves to the service of your son Jesus Christ.

09) Concluding Prayer: God of all creation, as we have honoured thy servant, we his children living on this earth ask you to be with us in all our trials and temptations. Mother, be our guide and lead us to life everlasting. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Seventh Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, Queen and Mother of the Society 04) Opening Prayer: Mary, Mother of our Society, we come before you today to venerate you for being a guiding light of our Society. Mary, our Mother, as we journey in this least Society guide us and intercede with your Son for everyone, till we reach our eternal home. We make this prayer through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading 07) Reflection: On September 8th, 1947 Pope Pius XII granted us Jesuits a new liturgical feast in honour of Mother Mary under the title - Queen of the Society of Jesus. We celebrate it on April 22. As we approach the feast of the Nativity of our Blessed Mother, let us try to relive those moments so dear to the Society, recalling the special role Mary had in her life and activity. Even a very casual perusal of the life of St Ignatius will reveal the very special place Mary had in all the events of his life. During his convalescence in Loyola Ignatius suffered violent temptations from the evil one. It was then that Mary appeared to him enveloped in heavenly brilliance. In Ignatius own words, One night, while he lay awake, he saw clearly the likeness of our Lady with the Holy child Jesus at the sight of which he received most abundant consolation for a considerable period of time. He felt so great a disgust for his past life, especially his sins of the flesh that he thought all such images which had formally occupied his mind were wiped out. Thus from that time onwards, he never gave the slightest consent to the things of the flesh. Ignatius kept a personal diary, and all the words that referred to Mother Mary, he wrote in blue letters. Also in the same childlike simplicity, he carried next to his heart a picture of our lady known as Our Lady of the Heart. Just a short time before his death he gave this picture to his nephew begging him never to part from it, because it had been for him an endless and most timely succour in very many needs and perils of a soul. It was before the statute of our lady of Montserrat that Ignatius made a night long vigil of arms on the eve of the feast of the Annunciation, laying his dagger at her feet. Our Lady appeared to Ignatius more than 30 times during his stay in Manresa, and he experienced her powerful influence in the writing of the Spiritual Exercise and the Constitution. He loved visiting the shrines of mother Mary and spent long hours in the little chapel at Montmartre. It was here that he and his companions made their first vows in 1534. Is it any wonder that any Jesuits down the Centuries have had a special devotion to our Lady? Is it any wonder that St. Francis Borgia often said, it would be a monstrous thing if anyone were to belong to the Society of Jesus and not love, reverence and serve the mother of God. The young Society saw her as the virgin mother of God who has undertaken the patronage of the whole Society. St. Francis Xavier did everything under our ladys care. This phrase surely reveals the secret of his apostolate. A very tender love and trust in the Queen and mother of mercy. He made a vow to defend the Immaculate Conception; spent 8 days in the holy house of Loreto, begging Our Ladys blessings before embarking on his voyage to the Indies. St John Berchmans made this resolution: I shall never rest till I have acquired a tender love for our most sweet mother Mary. He kept Saturday as a special day in honour of 8

Mary. On every occasion he spoke about her without reserve. Thou, my mother, Mary ever virgin, are the patron of my holiness, my health, and my studies. 08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother Mary, Intercede for us. a) Lord God, you kept the Mother of your Son free from all stain of sin, protect us from all evil. b) Lord God, you inspired Mary to treasure in her heart all the words of your Son; teach us to treasure your word in our hearts and lives. c) Lord God, you chose a Virgin as Mother of your Son, grant that we live faithfully our life of Chastity. d) Lord God, you willed that when your Son was dying on the cross, His Mother Mary should share His sufferings. Grant that by her help we take up our crosses and follow your Son with fidelity. e) Lord God, you raised the immaculate Virgin Mary with both body and soul to the glory of heaven, grant that all the faithful deceased of our Society may be welcomed into everlasting glory in the company of Jesus and Mary. 09) Concluding Prayer: Lord Jesus, who did ordain that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Your Mother, should be to St Ignatius his instructor in piety and to his Society both Mother and Queen; we beseech you, grant that we who exalt in her patronage on earth may deserve to rejoice in her glory in heaven. Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Eighth Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, our Model of Humility 04) Opening Prayer: O Lord, you chose Mary as the Mother of your Son. Because she was humble enough to accept your call, she did not hesitate to say YES to your call. Help us to imbibe the quality of humility to be ever obedient to Your Will. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading: Isa 57,14-15 or Phil 2,1-11 07) Reflection: Humility - this quality of Mother Mary is really challenging to practice in our day-to-day life. Everyone wants to be praised and wants comforts. Though human, God chose Mary as the mother of God. She was humble, and accepted his call. Mary, the faithful handmaid, never, in either thought or word or deed, contradicted the Most High. She lived always and in all things obedient to the will of God. She remained faithful even till the cross. It was a privilege to become the Mother of God. In spite of troubles, persecutions and sorrows she remained faithful to the call of God. In this competitive world she is our strength and courage to face challenges. We should live in our Mothers immaculate heart, love what she loves and desire what she desires. Then we are sure to have peace, joy, holiness and humility. Let us not forget that we have salvation through our Mothers humble YES. 9

08) Intercessory Prayers Our Response: Mother Mary, Intercede for us. a) Mary, humble servant of the Lord, make us humble servants in the mission of your Son Jesus that we worthily proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth. b) Mary, humble servant of the Lord, we pray for the Universal Church. Intercede for our holy father the Pope that he may Shepherd the flock into the green pastures of the Gospel Values. c) Mary, humble servant of the Lord, we pray for the Society of Jesus, may the Companions of Jesus work for the least, the lost and the last while striving for Gods Greater Glory. d) Mary, humble servant of the Lord, we pray for Peace among our brothers and sisters, so that they may unite all people as one flock of the kingdom of the Heavenly Father. e) Mary, humble servant of the Lord, the patroness of our Nation, we pray for our Country India; we are facing many problems and challenges. We pray through your intercession that we may live in peace and prosperity. 09) Concluding Prayer: Mother Mary, you were so humble to say YES to Gods call and do Gods will and bear Jesus Christ as your son. Your humility is an example for us. Grant us the grace to seek this humility and do Gods will. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen 10) Angelus ************************************************ 01) Ninth Day of Novena in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary 02) Sign of the Cross 03) Theme: Mother Mary, a Model for Courage. 04) Opening Prayer: We praise you, Lord God Almighty, and we echo with joy Marys song of praise. What wonders you have worked for her! What wonders you have worked for us too! When you looked on Mary, your lowly servant, you have also looked upon us, poor sinners that we were and have raised us up to be your children. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen 05) Hymn 06) Scripture Reading: Lk 1,46-56 07) Reflection: The Church has the mission of announcing redemption to all, including the poor. The Churchs preferential love for the poor is wonderfully described in Marys Magnificat. Drawing from Marys heart, the Church renews in herself the awareness that the truth about God cannot be separated from his preferential love for the poor. Mary did not merely say beautiful things; she did them. Instead of glorifying the fact of her own motherhood, she went to aid Elizabeth. She asked her Son Jesus to save the young couple at Cana from disgrace. Instead of being wrapped up in grief at the departure of her Son, she stood with the Apostles, encouraging them to be steadfast in the face of persecution and injustice. Like Mary we have to help our brothers and sisters to realize their dignity as children of God. And help to fight, to strive for their liberation - liberation from poverty, prejudices and pride.

Amen. 10) Angelus ************************************************
