Smart Grid - Hydro Ones Approach

Richard Bertolo Project Director, Advanced Distribution System Project November 3, 2010

Who are we
Transmission:
28,600 (circuit - km) interconnected 85,000 towers, 4000 km fibre Peak demand: 27,005 MW Energy transmitted: 157 TWh

Distribution:
123,000 km of distribution lines, 1.8M poles, 1.3M customers, 640,000 sq km service territory (twice the size of Texas) acquired 90 utilities since 2000 (still about 90 utilities left)

Ontario Ministry of Energy Direction

Create an energy conservation culture across Ontario and help consumers better manage their electricity use More efficient use of Ontarios existing supply Reduce reliance on external generation resources Need to replace 80% of generation over next 20 years (~$70B)

Install 800,000 smart meters in Ontario by Dec. 2007 convert 100% to smart meters by 2010

Advanced Distribution Solution

ADS RFP is looking for: DMS Intelligent Devices to support DMS

Based on 4 Business Objectives: DG Integration Distribution Reliability / Operations Improvement Outage Restoration Optimization Distribution Network Asset Planning and Tools
17

Distributed Generation Integration

Significant amount of new distributed generation (DG) being planned on Hydro One distribution system as a result of the Ontario Green Energy Act Integrated system level view of Protection and Control is required: Remote integration, monitoring and control Automation and predictive modeling DS monitoring Automated generation rejection DG protection Dynamic controls Interoperability
18

Distribution System Reliability and Ops

The Dx system will be automated to varying degrees to provide for real-time monitoring and control, automatic restoration and optimized operations to reduce overall utility costs and improve customer satisfaction: Real-time monitoring and control of TS, DS, RS, Line regulators, In-line Reclosers, Remote Control Switches, Capacitors, fault indicators, instrument transformers for line segment loading Interoperability amongst all devices Improved SAIDI/CAIDI/SAIFI Visual realization (wide area visualization of network , installation of video equipment)

19

Outage Restoration

Customer outage duration will be minimized by leveraging scenario 2 with quicker more efficient fault restoration by enhancing field force mobilization: Integration of key enterprise systems (SCADA, GIS, AMI, CIS, WFM, OMS, Customer Portal) to streamline business processes AMI and feeder device data garnered over wireless communication network Field force location known by GPS with lone worker personal devices for safety Accomplishment reporting, asset and material updates in real-time Customer notification of outage status
20

Dx Network Asset Planning and Tools

Automate process of planning (network modeling and design) to provide superior analytics that feed distribution capital and maintenance programs Dx feeder connectivity model available in spatial representation (GIS) Combine with station and feeder electrical operational data store Single system of record Archival data from real time monitoring and control of TS, DS, RS, Line Regulators, In-line reclosers, switches, etc. Meet NERC requirements
