Inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Indicated
for palliative treatment of hyperthyroidism.
Contraindications/warnings/interactions
.Contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Use cautiously in
patients >40 yrs. because of increased risk of
agranulocytosis. No relevant interactions.

Assess pt for development of
hypothyroidism (intolerance to cold,
constipation, dry skin, headache,
listlessness, tiredness, or weakness).
Lab value alterations caused by medicine
Thyroid function studies should be monitored prior to and
during therapy. WBC counts and differentials should be
monitored due to increased risk of agranulocytosis. May
cause increased AST, ALT, LDH, alkaline phosphatase,
serum bilirubin, and prothrombin time.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication
Take around the clock. If a dose is missed, take as soon as
remembered, if almost time for next dose, take both doses
together. Monitor weight and notify healthcare provider of
significant changes.May cause drowsiness. Advise pt to
consult health care professional regarding dietary souces of
iodine and to report sore throat, fever, chills, headache,
malaise, weakness, yellowing of eyes or skin, unusual
bleeding or bruising, rash, or symptoms of hyper or
hypothyroidism.
