Lesson: Jump Strategy Using a Number Line Key Learning Area: Addition and Subtraction Grade: 1 Bilby OUTCOMES Syllabus outcomes: Mathematics Date: 21st November 2011

NS1.2 Uses a range of mental strategies and informal recording methods for addition and subtraction involving one- and two- digit numbers Uses an empty number line to record strategies used to solve addition problems Counts on from the larger number to find the total of two numbers

LESSON FOCUS: developing students to use mental strategies to resolve addition problems SEQUENCE OF TEACHING/LEARNING EXPERENCES TEACHER STUDENTS INTRODUCTION Being the lesson by writing on the IWB the problem of the day: Nicholas had 46 toy cars, and Kevin gave him 35 more toy cars on his birthday. Explain that we will be solving this problem using the jump strategy By applying the following steps: 1.- I use an empty number line 2.- Start with the first number and add the second number 3.- Break up/partition the number to be added into tens and ones 4.- Record the jumps made and write down the answer. Follow these steps thoroughly Time Students sit on the floor listening to the teachers explanation 10 mins Resources Whiteboa rd Markers Ruler

Go through the steps followed to solve the problem. The teacher says, To solve the problem 46 + 35, I wrote 46 on an empty number line. I then broke up (partitioned) 35 into 3 tens and 5 ones. I made 3 jumps of ten (teacher points to the number line) and 5 jumps of one (teacher points to the number line). Each time I jumped I recorded the result

(teacher points to these). The answer to the problem 46 + 35 is 81. Use blocks partition of 10s when explaining

MAIN BODY Activity: Guided and independent Teacher explains explicitly that Students will work in pairs, using 2 dice, students will form two 2-digit numbers and use a jump strategy to solve the addition of both numbers. Students are provided with a ready-made empty number line to complete this task. CONCLUSION Recap content what did we learn today? What steps doo we need to follow? EVALUATION

Students sit on the floor listening to the teacher, raise hand for questions. Students are organized by the teacher with a pair. They seat on the floor to continue find.

Have you Recapped the relevance of jump strategy within the activity? Reinforce the purpose of the lesson Giving the students freedom in how they express their understanding Provided appropriate materials Constantly reminded students of how much time they have left so they are not rushing, and can express their ideas effectively? Encourage equal participation. Can students identify a real life relevance to the activity? Did the students know exactly what you wanted them to do?
