Presence of Vectors and Rodents Criteria Nature of the Problem Health Threat Computation Actual score Justification The problem is a health threat because it can cause viruses to affect the members of the family like viral hemorrhagic fevers (dengue), and hantavirus. The main reservoirs of these fevers are rodents and arthropods (ticks and mosquitoes). The problem is easily modifiable because there are other methods that the family can use to eliminate rodents and vectors. These methods include rat and mouse baits, live traps, rodent repellents, electrical traps, glue traps, and insecticides. The problem has a high preventive potential. If the problem will be addressed it may prevent the family from getting viruses like the viral hemorrhagic fever, which survival depends upon an animal or insect host, called the natural reservoir, hantavirus, which is a deadly disease from rodents. It has a high salience since the family sees the condition needing an immediate action because they are disturbed by the presence of these rodents and vectors. Sometimes, when they are sleeping or eating, they are disturbed whenever they are bitten by these.

B. Excessive Cigarette Smoking Criteria Nature of the Problem Health Threat Computation Actual score Justification The problem is a health threat because smoking leads people to develop health problems like heart disease, stroke, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), and many types of cancer including lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer. People who smoke also have an increased risk of infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. The problem is partially modifiable because there are not enough interventions to stop the usage of smoking. Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal. Smoking has a high preventive potential. If smoking will be prevented, it will make their house healthier to live in because other family members who inhale the smoke will also be free from health problems like heart disease, stroke, emphysema and cancer. It has a low salience since the family doesnt perceive it as a problem because they are already used to smoking and no other family members are complaining regarding the smoking habits of some of the family members.

C. Illness State (Asthma) Criteria Nature of the Problem Health deficit Computation Actual score Justification The problem is a health deficit that requires immediate attention because further complications may occur like : Emotional problems. Even when it is not life threatening, asthma is debilitating and frightening. It significantly lowers the quality of life. Sleep disorders. Sleeplessness and daytime sleepiness are common problems. Studies indicate that between 80% and 93% of asthmatics have sleeping problems about three times a week. In one poll, 40% missed work an average of 11 days a year because of sleep disturbance. Asthma has been associated with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which blockage of the upper airway causes the sleeper to temporarily stop breathing, then resume with a gasp, often many times during each hour of sleep. Heart disease. There have been some reports of an association between asthma and a heightened risk for heart disease. The problem is easily modifiable. Smoking is one of the barriers to reduce the possibility of occurrence of complications of asthma. There are interventions available to at least lessen or reduce the seriousness of asthma. This includes: Clean the house at least once a week and wear a mask while doing it

The problem has a high preventive potential. The occurrence of emotional problems, sleep disorders and heart diseases can be prevented if the said interventions will be followed and managed adequately.

Salience A condition or problem needing immediate attention

2/2 x 1

It has high salience since the family sees the condition needing an immediate action to prevent further complications. The family members are worried on the clients condition whenever asthma attacks her because she seems to have difficulty in breathing and feels uncomfortable.
