A Thanksgiving tradition con-
tinues in Marlton, as a number of
kind volunteers will gather to-
gether at Carrabbas Italian Grill
in Evesham Township to prepare
Thanksgiving dinners for the
needy, on Thursday, Nov. 24, said
David Silver, an Evesham Town-
ship Board of Education member
and active participant in the Yel-
low Ribbon Club.
Members of the Marlton Busi-
ness Association, the Evesham
Celebrations Foundation and the
education foundation come to-
gether and help prepare the do-
nated food for the needy.
All of the food is donated for
the event. Dave Scott of the MBA
or Dan Morton, president of the
MBA, typically organizes the do-
nations. Basically its people of
all groups in Evesham Township
just chipping in for the day and
purchasing the food we need, Sil-
ver said.
Whole Foods, of Marlton, also
donated 20 turkeys for the event,
Silver said.
The morning of the event the
group uses the kitchen of Carrab-
bas Italian Grill to help prepare
the meals.
Around 11 a.m., volunteering
families come to the restaurant to
pick up the prepared meals and to
drive them to the needy through-
out town.
The meals are donated to the
elderly, shut-ins, war veterans,
and other citizens who have
signed up for food, Silver said.
Its an annual tradition for the
township, he said, and while the
group already has enough volun-
teers, it is always looking for do-
nations.
To donate, please call the Marl-
ton Business Association at 810-
1811.
Editors note: Is your organiza-
tion doing something special for
the needy during the holidays? If
so, let us know. Send an e-mail to
news@marltonsun.com.

Borucki as Evesham Townships
representatives on the board.
Fitzgerald will serve until the
April school board and budget
elections.
In welcoming Fitzgerald to the
BOE, President Ted D. Shinske of
Shamong said: Barry is new to
the Lenape District board, but he

Law enforcement officials from
Evesham Township will be crack-
ing down on drunken drivers as
part of the annual holiday season
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,
statewide campaign. Beginning
Dec. 5, and running through Jan.
2, local and state law-enforcement
officials will conduct saturation
patrols looking for motorists who
may be drink-driving.
A concentrated national effort,
the campaign helps to raise
awareness about the dangers of
drinking and driving through
high-visibility enforcement and
public education tools, including
posters, banners and mobile
video display signs.
Launched nationally in 1999,
the program works to combat
drunken driving during some of
the busiest travel times of the
year.
This is a critical law-enforce-
ment program that can save lives
during a time of the year when
impaired driving traditionally in-
creases by nearly 10 percent,
said Lt. Kevin Teschko. This ini-
tiative brings attention to the se-
rious consequences of drunk
driving and the grave danger
those who choose to drink and
drive pose to all who share the
road with them.
Last year in New Jersey, 168
people were killed as a result of
alcohol-related crashes. That
number represents 30 percent of
the 556 traffic fatalities reported
in the state in 2010.
Law-enforcement agencies par-
ticipating in the Drive Sober or
Get Pulled Over, 2011 Year End
Crackdown offer the following ad-
vice:
Take mass transit, a taxicab,
or ask a sober friend to drive you
home.
Spend the night where the ac-
tivity is held.
Report impaired drivers to
law enforcement. In New Jersey,
drivers may dial #77 on their cell
phones to report a drunk driver.
Always buckle-up, every ride.
Its your best defense against an
impaired driver.
If youre intoxicated and trav-
eling on foot, the safest way to get
home is to take a cab or have a
sober friend or family member
drive or escort you to your
doorstep.
Motorists are also asked to sub-
scribe to the pledge of the Ensign
John R. Elliot HERO Campaign
for Designated Drivers: Drive
sober, be a designated driver and
dont let friends drive drunk.
Under the effort, local businesses
and community groups, law en-
forcement agencies and schools
work together to keep drunk driv-
ers off the road. Started in New
Jersey by the Elliot family follow-
ing the tragic death of their son,
John, in a head-on collision with
a drunk driver, the campaign has
become a national model for pre-
venting drunk driving.

SPEAK UP
The Sun welcomes letters from readers.
Brief and to the point is best, so we look for
letters that are 300 words or fewer. Include
your name, address and phone number. We
do not print anonymous letters. Send letters
to news@marltonsun.com, via fax at 856-

T
hanksgiving kicks off the tra-
ditional holiday season. And
with the holiday season come
all kinds of efforts to help those in
need.
We want to help spread the word if
you or an organization you are work-
ing with are trying to brighten the hol-
idays for someone.
Every year, schools, civic groups
and more hold all kinds of drives.
Food is collected. Clothing is gathered.
Toys are purchased and donated so
that children have a happy holiday
season.
We want to help these efforts by get-
ting the word out. To do that, we need
you to tell us about any collection ef-
forts you have.
Its easy to do. Just shoot us an
email. Tell us who you are, what you
are doing and, most importantly, how
our readers can help you to achieve
your goal.
Its vital to tell us where and when
people can make donations and the
types of donations that you are accept-
ing. Letting people know where their
donations end up doesnt hurt either.
Once we get the information, we
will share it with our readers. Then,
hopefully, they will respond and fill
your collection baskets until they are
overflowing.
Theres no need to explain the eco-
nomic problems so many of our
friends and neighbors are experienc-
ing. You know many people are hurt-
ing, and have been hurting for some
time now. You know that, without your
help, they will have a difficult holiday
season.
So lets do all we can to help those in
need. All of you Holiday Heroes, let us
know what you are doing and how peo-
ple can make a difference.
Well take it from there.
Help during holidays
Collecting food? Gathering clothing? Tell us about it

us about it. Well spread the word.

Zuccotti Park gets cleansed
from Occupy Wall Street
As if the public perception of the Occu-
py Wall Street protesters wasnt bad
enough already, last weeks raid of Zuccotti
Park in New York City added more fuel to
the fire.
The protesters, it seems, created unsani-
tary living conditions that had become in-
tolerable, according to NYC Mayor
Michael Bloomberg. And so, they were
cleared of the area forcibly of course
while cleaning crews literally hosed down
the filth.
It had to be embarrassing enough for the
original OWS organizers that some protest-
ers had taken the movement so far that
participants are being portrayed as not just
extreme, not just crazy, not just misguided,
but also smelly. And who can get behind
that?
Tim Ronaldson
Too often, institutions, not
kids, protected from abuse
In my younger years, I wasnt just a jour-
nalist. I was a teacher, too. In Roman
Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese
of Newark. I loved teaching and I loved
being a mentor to teens who often had very
few role models in their lives.
To say it was a labor of love would be an
understatement.
The pay was nothing more than a pit-
tance. But the net results of being a good
teacher were invaluable and those memo-
ries remain among my fondest.
While I was employed by the Archdio-
cese of Newark, something beyond com-
prehension happened it was the scandal
that rocked the church in ways little else
could. Priests, by the hundreds, were being
named in lawsuits.
Some of the incidents dated back to well
before Vatican II to a time where the
church was tantamount in the lives of
many Catholics.

Its that time of the year. Its
time for the eighth annual Sun
newspapers Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie holiday drive to aid
area animal shelters and rescue
groups.
And, again this year, we need
your help. More specifically, the
animals in the shelters need your
help.
This year, the drive will run
from the week of Nov. 28 through
Dec. 16.
As mentioned, we started this
effort way back in 2004. That year,
we had only a few drop spots, and
we collected a couple of carloads
of supplies.
All of that has changed. In re-
cent years, we have had 20-30 drop
spots and have been able to deliv-
er about 25-30 carloads of sup-
plies to the shelters every holiday
season.
The animals in these shelters
are in a tough spot. Our goal al-
ways has been to lighten the bur-
den shelters and rescue groups
have to keep the animals fed and
comfortable.
When the shelters receive ba-
sics, such as food, blankets and
litter, they save money. Thats
money that can go toward helping
to find animals a permanent
home.
Want to help? Heres how it all
works:
Right now, we need to build a
list of drop spots. We need places
where people can go to drop off
food, cat litter, cleaning supplies
and everything else our local ani-
mal shelters need. If you dont
mind people showing up at your
door and dropping 40-pound bags
of dog food on your floor, we need
to hear from you.
In a couple of weeks, we will
publish a list of drop spots in our
newspapers and online. People
then will read the list, gather sup-
plies and take them to a drop spot.
After that, the supplies are
picked up and taken to a shelter.
It all starts with the drop spots.
The more spots we have, the more
supplies we collect. More drop
spots mean a brighter holiday
season for shelter animals.
If you want to be a drop spot, or
if you have questions, please send
an email to alan@elauwit.com.

The Burlington County Free-
holders, the Burlington County
Health Department, the Health-
care Community, Burlington
County College and numerous
other partners are teaming up to
ensure that everyone in Burling-
ton County receives a flu shot and
brings immunity to the commu-
nity.
The week of Dec. 5 to 9 has
been declared Burlington County
Influenza Vaccination Week.
During this week, there will be
many opportunities for individu-
als to receive flu vaccinations.
The Burlington County In-
fluenza Vaccination Week pro-
vides an important opportunity
for us to tell the community how
important it is to get an annual
flu shot, said Burlington County
Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien.
Getting vaccinated is the single
best way for people to protect not
only themselves against flu, but
their loved ones as well.
Throughout Influenza Vaccina-
tion Week, the health department
will be offering free vaccinations
to all county residents over the
age of 6 months at the Burlington
Center Mall from noon to 6 p.m.
In addition to the flu shot, the
Health Department will also be
offering FluZone High Dose (a flu
shot designed for those over 65)
vaccines.
A clinic for children who need
a second dose will be on Dec. 15 at
9 a.m. in the Virtua Community
Health Center located at 1638
Route 38, in the Lumberton Plaza.
Numerous other partners,
such as Burlington County Col-
lege are teaming up to ensure that
everyone in Burlington County
receives a flu shot and brings Im-
munity to the Community.
Getting a flu vaccine is easy. It
is available through doctors, the
health department, and at local
pharmacies.
Many employers, schools, and
colleges and universities also
offer flu vaccinations.
We encourage all Burlington
County residents to take advan-
tage of these free flu vaccinations
and help stop the spread of the
flu, OBrien said.

Dawn Hazelton is the new as-
sistant vice president sales asso-
ciate at New Jerseys leading in-
dependent title insurance agency.
Hazelton has the knowledge and
experience to carry through
every day on The Guardian
Pledge of exemplary customer
service.
From the first point of con-
tact all the way through the final
closing, we want every step of
the process to leave a positive im-
pression on our customers,
Hazelton said. We strive to ex-
ceed, not just meet, our cus-
tomers expectations.
Our goal is to provide un-
equaled service to all our cus-
tomers. This is critical to our
success, said Guardian Settle-
ment Chairman and CEO
Christopher J. Brown. Dawn has
a strong record of resolving prob-
lems and following up on cus-
tomer issues. Her focus helps
keep us ahead of the competi-
tion.
Hazelton works with Guardian
Settlement processors to trou-
bleshoot files at the agencys two
offices in Marlton and
Somerville.
Its her job to make sure there
are no unresolved issues headed
into closing and, when necessary,
she also serves as a settlement
clerk.
A lot of companies claim to be
the best, but we judge that by how
many customers either return
for future closings or refer other
business to us, she said. We all
take great pride when someone
comes back for a new closing or
when a customer says we were
highly recommended by a
friend.
In her new position, Hazelton
also serves as a liaison between
Guardian Settlement and the real
estate agents at Guardians top
client, RE/MAX Connection Re-
altors.
In this capacity, she makes
sure realtors keep customers up
to date on the status of their up-
coming purchases or sales.
Thats an overlooked part of
customer service, Hazelton said.
Every person in our family of
companies has a chance to create
a positive impression, so we need
to make sure that all our col-
leagues know what is happening
with their transaction.
Hazelton brings nearly a dozen
years of real estate and financial
experience to her AVP position.
She joined Guardian Settlement
Agents in March 2010 as a proces-
sor after almost two years as an
assistant manager at a local bank
in Cherry Hill.
Before that, she worked as a
typist and then a processor at a
small local title firm for four and
a half years.
Her first job out of college was
with an area search firm where
she created abstract packages for
about four years.
A graduate of Thomas Edison
State College, Hazelton is a grad-
uate of Holy Cross High School
and currently lives in Delran.
Guardian Settlement Agents
has offices at 1000 Lincoln Drive

Given the economy, its no sur-
prise theres an increase in people
using food pantries to stretch an
already strained dollar.
The Food Bank of South Jer-
seys CEO Val Traore said de-
mand has continued to grow.
Four years ago, we distributed
about 4 million pounds of food.
Then in 2010, it was 8 million; 9
million in 2011; and our projec-
tions for 2012 are 12 million
pounds, Traore said.
She pointed to a 2009 study that
showed that the four-county serv-
ice area (Camden, Burlington,
Gloucester and Salem) had
100,000 food-insecure people, peo-
ple who are never sure where
their next meal is coming from.
This year, Feeding America,
our parent organization, revealed
their Map the Meal study, show-
ing over 170,000 food-insecure
people in our four counties, Tra-
ore said. And over 57,000 of those
are children.
St. Mary of the Lakes St. Vin-
cent de Paul thrift store in Med-
ford has seen an increase in need,
as well.
Judie Wasson, store coordina-
tor, said donations are up right
now.
She said clients are given a
clothing voucher that allows
them to pick two outfits per fami-
ly member.
We just thank anyone who
comes in to shop at our store to
help us achieve what were trying
to do here, Wasson said.
Mary Ann Coceano, who has
volunteered with St. Vincent de
Paul for 17 years, said need has in-
creased dramatically.
She said there are more mid-
dle-class people coming in, people
whove lost their jobs and who are

For the second year in a row,
Drew Polin, president of OpDeci-
sion LLC (OpDecision.com), has
received the second-place award
for Young Entrepreneur of the
Year of the Delaware Valley, given
by the Entrepreneurs Forum of
Southern New Jersey.
The award was given at their
second annual ceremony, at the
Valleybrook Country Club on
Oct. 19. Polin, a Marlton resident,
is the only person to place in the
innovative category (2010) and the
most successful category, this
year (2011).
It is an honor for the Entre-
preneurs Forum to again recog-
nize Drews critical content and
operational expertise, and 10
years of innovation in the wire-
less communications service in-
dustry, said OpDecison CEO Jay
E. Milgrom.
Drew is an exceptional busi-
nessperson and a perfect example
of whats best in entrepreneurs,
said Anthony Mongeluzo, creator
of the Young Entrepreneur of the
Delaware Valley awards and pres-
ident of Pro Computer Service.
He has imagination, deep in-
dustry expertise and a ferocious
work ethic, which is why his com-
pany continues to grow and have
a strong following of satisfied
customers.
OpDecision LLC is a leader in
corporate and institutional wire-
less expense management. The
Southampton, Pa.-based company
helps midsize to Fortune 1000
businesses reduce wireless costs
by up to 45 percent without
changing their current carrier or
contract. OpDecisions manage-
ment team brings more than 55
years of experience in the
telecommunications and cellular
industries.
Starting in business develop-
ment with T-Mobile USA, Drew
Polin quickly developed a com-
prehensive understanding of the
wireless communications servic-
es industry. In 2003, seeing oppor-
tunity in the under-serviced cellu-
lar market, he co-founded Global
West Communications to help
companies understand their op-
tions in the wireless landscape.
Drew grew Global West Commu-
nications into a well-known
Southern California brand and a
leading provider of cellular tech-
nology.
In 2007, Polin sold Global West
Communications. Envisioning
more innovative offerings and a
highly client-focused approach,
he launched Global East Commu-
nications, where he focused on re-
ducing costs, optimizing service
plans, and negotiating with carri-
ers to procure lower pricing for
equipment and services.
Polin is also a board member
for The Drenk Center Foundation
and YMCA Camden County Com-
mittee. He was also a member of
the Philadelphia Zoo Corporate
Leadership and holds a bache-
lors degree in advertising/public
relations from Penn State Univer-
sity.
Entrepreneur Forum judges
chose winners based on the fol-
lowing criteria:
Founder(s) must be 35 or
younger by Dec. 31, 2009, and have
started their business by 30.
Founder(s) must own 50 per-
cent or more of the business.
Annual revenue must exceed
$100,000 in gross sales for the fis-
cal year ending 2009.
Primary business headquar-
ters must be in the Delaware Val-
ley.
The Entrepreneurs Forum of
Southern New Jersey Inc.
(EFSNJ), a not-for-profit organi-
zation, dedicates itself to foster-
ing the development of entrepre-
neurial ideas and ventures and
improving the success rate of
emerging, growth-oriented com-
panies.
OpDecision is offering free
wireless audits and optimizations
for nonprofit organizations with
up to 200 wireless cell phones
until December.
This includes a free audit of
bills and recommendations to re-
duce their monthly wireless ex-
penses.

Feeding the hungry in South Jersey
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Crime increased about 1 per-
cent throughout the entire state
from 2009 to 2010, according to
the Uniform Crime Reports pub-
lished by the state last week.
The annual report is based on
crime statistics submitted to the
New Jersey Uniform Crime Re-
porting System by every New
Jersey law enforcement agency
for the year 2010, according to
Paula T. Dow, the attorney gener-
al of New Jersey.
Effective law enforcement re-
quires accurate crime statistics
in order to identify the extent,
type, and location of criminal ac-
tivity, she said in the report.
Criminal justice administrators
and planners have long recog-
nized the Uniform Crime Report-
ing Program as the vehicle to ac-
complish this objective.
Violent crime and nonviolent
crime incidents are both up in
the state, with nonviolent inci-
dents increasing by about 3,000
incidents over 2009 to 183,643 in
2010. Violent crime increased by
about 68 incidents, up to 27,174
incidents in 2010.
In Burlington County, the
overall crime index went down
in 2010 when compared with
2009.
Incidents in 2010 dropped to
8,390 from 8,553 in 2009. The
crime rate per every 1,000 resi-
dents in Burlington County
dropped from 19.2 incidents in
2009 to 18.7 in 2010.
Overall incidents in Evesham
Township increased by 99 from
2009 to 2010.
There were 753 incidents in
2010 to 654 in 2009, according to
the reports.
Lt. Walt Miller, of the Eve-
sham Township Police Depart-
ment, said the UCR isnt as use-
ful to the police department as
the monthly crime reports are
for policing.
We do intelligence led polic-
ing in our department, so our
monthly reports are much more
useful, Miller said. The UCR
only captures a certain compo-
nent of time. Also, the only bur-
glaries that the UCR tracks are
residential burglaries, not auto-
motive burglaries. We would be
missing a huge portion of the
burglaries that happen here if
we only looked at the UCR.
Violent crime incidents rose
from 38 to 41 in 2010, according to
the crime reports.
Nonviolent crime rose 616 in
2009 to 712 incidents in 2010.
Incidents of rape actually de-
creased from eight in 2009 to only
three in 2010.
Robbery and aggravated as-
sault both rose from 15 incidents
each in 2009 to 19 incidents in
2010.
The UCR is a good tool to
measure your municipality
against others in the state and to
see how you rank in the county,
but for day-to-day applications it
doesnt mean much, Miller said.
Policing is a hard thing to
score. The UCR is trying to put a
score on an abstract figure here
and its a difficult thing to do,
Miller said.

form crime report, visit the
states website at www.nj.gov.

Most have incomes just a bit
too high to qualify for assistance,
making them working poor.
Four families come to the
pantry every week, three come
twice a month and another four
come once a month.
Items in demand include juice,
cereals, meats, soups, paper prod-
ucts and chemicals.
Davis said the church has so-
licited help from the Food Bank of
South Jersey because parish-
ioners could not supply enough.
One preschool parent has do-
nated all of the turkeys for the
families at Thanksgiving, a youth
group will help put baskets to-
gether and teen boys will make
two pies per family apple and
pumpkin.
Raising funds and collecting
food is the greatest challenge
faced by the Food Bank of South
Jersey.
With government cutbacks in
the funding, we typically get for
TEFAP food (The Emergency
Food Assistance Program), we
are more desperate than ever for
funds to buy food and get it out
there to the people who need it,
Traore said.
With Thanksgiving this week,
the food bank is busy, working
through more than 200 agencies
pantries, soup kitchens, missions
and others to help distribute
food to the needy.
During Thanksgiving, well
distribute more than 16,000
turkeys with boxes of Thanksgiv-
ing sides, Traore said. We will
also distribute food through our
direct-service programs which
serve the most fragile populations
children and the elderly to
make sure their holidays are
hunger free.
Editors Note: If you are hold-
ing a food or clothing drive this
holiday season and would like The
Sun to help spread the word about
how people can help, please e-mail
the details to this newspaper.

On Nov. 9, Team Evesham re-
ceived recognition from both the
American Cancer Society and the
National Multiple Sclerosis Socie-
ty for their respective 2011 bike
rides.
On Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the
Cancer Awards ceremony in
Cherry Hill, Team Evesham was
recognized as the Rookie Team of
the year. In addition, the team
also received recognition as a
Bronze level team. The team
raised more than $10,000 for this
ride.
On the same night in Philadel-
phia at the MS Awards, Team
Evesham was recognized as the
Top Friends and Family Team
and was also among the top five
teams in overall total fund rais-
ing. The team raised over $81,000.
Team president Sandy Student
said that only three years ago
Team Evesham was started with
just eight riders in the MS City to
Shore event. In the three years
since we founded the team, he
said, we have now raised over
$200,000 to aid in the fight against
MS.
In my wildest dreams I never
envisioned having so many
friends out to ride with us. I am a
lucky guy because I get to meet so
many spectacular people. When I
looked at the growth of our week-
ly rides I have to tell you it is just
amazing to see so many folks at
Panera on the weekends, Stu-
dent said. I looked back at my
calendar and then I realized that
with all of our charity rides this
year; Bike New York, Unity Tour,
Livestrong, Juvenile Diabetes,
Cancer, MS, Tour de Shore, Pedal
from the Promenade, etc., our
team contributed over $120,000 to
various charities this year. Thank
you for making Team Evesham
and our Sunday rides an enor-
mous success.
