More Than a Mile of Failing Pipes Lined at Power Plant

American Pipe Lining, established in 1987, used blown-in epoxy to restore aging and failing potable, HVAC and gray water piping systems in-place. Nu Flow acquired APL in 2005 and has since used the technology to rehabilitate pipes in multiple residential and commercial buildings. Soon after the University Park Power Station had opened for operation in 2002, they experienced constant pipe system failures in the majority of the pipes. APL rehabilitated all of the failing pipe systems at the power station, which adds up to more than a mile in pipes. Because of APLs superior technology, the customer avoided unnecessary costs, demolition, disruption and future pipe system failures. Project: Rehabilitate failing small and large diameter pipes including the potable line for the power plants eye wash stations, the potable water pipes for the reverse osmosis system, the potable pipes inside the office building and the leaking drain pipes for excess oil. Customer and Site: University Park is a 540-megawatt, natural gasfired, simple-cycle peak power plant owned by PPL and located in University Park, Illinois. This power station creates extra electricity for county-wide power grids that are in need of additional power.

APLs innovative, less intrusive solution was chosen instead of a re-pipe or re-route because it was less destructive, less disruptive and about 40% of the cost of traditional repairs.

System: About 2,000 feet of 2 and 3 iron potable lines for each turbines eye wash, about 1,000 feet of 8 and 10 iron potable main for the reverse osmosis system, 1/2 and 1 iron potable lines inside the office building and about 2,400 feet of 4 plastic drain pipes for the turbines oil runoff. These pipes were mainly located underground and beneath the turbines, in hard-to-access areas. In total, more than a mile of pipes were failing. Situation: Extremely corrosive and aggressive water caused the various potable pipe system problems. The 2 and 3 potable line for the eye wash was so corroded that it gave out red water. The 8 and 10 potable lines for the reverse osmosis system had rust and debris, which the customer feared would cause damage. The potable lines for the office building experienced corrosion and rusty water as well. The pipe systems had to be protected against such aggressive water. The plastic drain pipes for the turbines excess oil runoff are located underground in a marshy area. The frequent ground movement caused joint breaks in the pipes, which then caused leaks. Since the water table is very high in that area, the leaking oils would make their way into it and contaminate the drinking water for the area. This was unacceptable and the customer wanted to rehabilitate the pipes to prevent leaks without having to dig up the ground. Solution: American Pipe Lining, a Nu Flow company, applied our blow-in epoxy coating to all of the failing pipe systems. This epoxy left a protective barrier inside the pipes that will prevent future corrosion, discolored water and leaks. APLs innovative, less intrusive solution was chosen instead of a re-pipe or re-route because it was less destructive, less disruptive and about 40% of the cost of traditional repairs. Also, since the power stations failing pipes were brand new pipes, replacing the pipes would not serve as an effective solution. For years, all types of residential, commercial, municipal and industrial properties have been choosing Nu Flow to save them hassle and money. As with the University Park Power Plant, time has proven that these solutions are long-lasting and effective.
