An infinitely long steel beam 100mm wide and 150 mm thick is resting on an elastic foundation whose modulus of foundation is 10.50N/mm3. The beam is subjected to uniformly distributed load of intensity 10N/m over a length of 400 mm. Determine the deflection and stresses at a point at mid length of this load and at two locations 100mm to the left and 200 mm to the right of this load. Explain the design of the column with reference to short, intermediate and long columns. What are the various empirical relations to predict the failure of columns? (a) Derive the differential equations of equilibrium in 2D polar and coordinates in theory of elasticity. (b) Define the relation between stress function and stresses in 2D polar coordinate problems and verify that this choice of stress function satisfies the differential equation of equilibrium.
