1. (a) Explain the integral slot winding and fractional slot winding with all associated calculations. (b) Determine the slot distribution and the pole phase group sequence for a 48 slot, 10 pole, 3- winding. [6+10] 2. (a) Explain the factors aecting synchronous reactance of alternator. (b) The SC, OC & DC test data for a star connected 25 kVA, 240 V, 60 Hz, alternator are (between two terminals): VOC = 240 V, ISC = 60.2 A - - - - For same eld current VDC = 120.6 V, IDC = 50.4 A Determine: Synchronous reactance. [8+8] 3. (a) Explain the AT method of nding voltage regulation. (b) A 1 MVA, 6.6 kV, 3- star connected synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 25 per phase. It supplies full load current at 0.8 lagging pf and a rated terminal voltage. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation when the generator supplies full load current at 0.8 leading pf. [8+8] 4. A 200 MVA, 11 kV, 3-, star connected alternator is operated at rated speed and voltage and at no load. A sudden 3- short circuit occurs at its terminals. The pu reactances are d = 1.3, d = 0.25 d = 0.15 (pu). The initial DC component is 60 % of the initial AC component of current. (Take Td = 1 Sec & Td = 0.05 Sec) Find: (a) AC component of current at the instant of short circuit. (b) Total current at the instant of short circuit. (c) AC component of current after 1 cycle (d) AC component of current after 2 sec. Td = 1 Sec & Td = 0.05 Sec. 5. (a) Compare (all 3-) synchronous motor, Induction motor & transformer. (b) A synchronous motor absorbing 50 kW is connected in parallel with a factory load of 200 kW at 0.8 lagging pf. If the resultant power factor after connecting SM is 0.9 lagging, how much leading kVAR are supplied by synchronous motor. At what power factor is it working? [8+8] [16]

6. (a) Explain the construction of damper winding. Clearly show the location of damper winding. (b) With neat diagram & explanation, show how damper winding prevents oscillations. [8+8] 7. The equivalent circuit parameters of 230 V, 50 Hz, single phase Induction motor having friction, windage, core loss of 50 W are given below: Stator resistance = 2.4 ;Rotor resistance (referred to stator) = 4.7 Magnetising reactance = 90 , Stator reactance = 3.2 , Rotor reactance (referred to stator) = 2.8 Core loses = 3.5 W, friction & windage loss = 13.5 W Calculate (a) Input current (b) Power factor (c) Developed power (d) Eciency for a slip of 4%. [44=16]

8. (a) Compare AC series motor & DC series motor. What are the operational diculties of each? (b) Explain the variable reluctance motor principle. [8+8]
