Learn how to design and build a rain garden!!!

This series will cover the steps in creating your own rain garden. Learn how rain gardens can address water quality issues in your community. Introduce yourself to the exciting array of rain gardens that are being added to landscapes in the Metro area. Explore rain garden site questions in a hands-on field session and find out how to install them. Master Gardeners and Watershed specialists will help you develop your planting design!

Attend the introductory class or take part in the whole series. Be inspired by visiting Maplewoods sustainable Extreme Green Make-over award winning yard at an open house event in May. There will be an option to purchase rain garden plants as a part of this series.

Learn about the nuts and bolts of rain gardens and their purpose. Get inspired by the many options for designs. Check out the Watershed Districts demo gardens when you attend the workshop in Little Canada. Presentation by Shawn Tracy from the Metropolitan Association of Soil Conservation Districts.

ASSESSMENT: II) RAIN GARDEN SITE ASSESSMENT: Drainage and Soils

14, 6:00Thursday, April 14 6:00- 8:00 p.m. Fee: $5 Location: 2060 Margaret St, North St. Paul Pre-requisite: Rain Garden Classroom Session Register and prepay by April 12. Join us at a private home to learn how to analyze your site, test for soil infiltration and determine your drainage area. Taught by Ryan Johnson from Ramsey Conservation District.

III) RAIN GARDEN DESIGN WORKSHOP: Garden Layout & Plant Design
6:30PMThursday, April 28, 6:30PM- 8:30PM Location: Maplewood Nature Center 2659 E.7th St. Maplewood Fee: $5 Pre-requisite: Rain Garden Classroom Session and Rain Garden Site Assessment Session Register and pre-pay by April 22 Overview of design principles. Use information gathered in your site assessment to design your own rain garden. Figure out how to resolve drainage issues! Get assistance on your design plan from instructors, Master Gardeners and other gardening specialists. Bring a map of your site and the results of your infiltration test. Class led by Shawn Tracy.

IV) RAIN GARDEN OPEN HOUSE

6:00PM 00PMThursday, May 5, 6:00PM- 8:00PM Location: 2010 Extreme Green Make-Over Award Winner Michael and Michele Tibodeau residence 2211 Ariel Street, Maplewood Free Phone registration appreciated Learn how these homeowners have integrated a green design that harvests rainwater, integrates energy landscaping and reduces their use of water, fertilizers and pesticides. Check out their front yard rain garden, a side rain garden with a dry creek bed that takes run-off from the garage and a large street-side rain garden that receives overflow from both gardens and the driveway. Native woodland wildflowers, ferns, trees and shrubs for improved wildlife habitat and prairie natives and cultivars growing in sunny rain gardens. A channel drain intercepts water from the driveway and pervious pavers replace the old concrete walkway.
