The Business

The Opportunity
In Mauritius, we must have all noticed that art does not really Iorm part oI our day to
day liIe. For instance, in countries like &K, in London, you have the PerIormer`s Alley where
any artist can present anything he/she is good at to the passersby. Almost everywhere there`s
a hint at art. It can be a line Irom a Iamous poem written on a tram. For most Mauritians, it
will go unseen as we have not been educated in a polyvalent way.

It is important to note that in Mauritius, our educational system is purely academic
despite the Iact that some schools do provide music or drama classes as not much emphasis is
laid upon participation in those classes. However, we do have subjects like Art, Web Design
and Fine Arts. These are unIortunately only reserved to art students and thereIore, those who
have chosen to study other Iields can very rarely get to know all the other Iorms oI Art. While
some universities makes it compulsory to indulge in some Iorm oI art like music, drama,
photography and some oIIers special Iacilities to students who excel at studies but also at
sports or other artistic activities like playing an music instrument which in some way to
motivate students to be polyvalent, this is not the case in Mauritius. In Iact, in France or in
the &S, when you look Ior a job, the person who has a CV with the correct requirements and
other activities in various Iields despite unrelated to the job requirement will have more
chance to get the job than someone who has the best qualiIication in the Iield but no other
activities which could give an overview oI the person`s personality to the recruiter. Education
is not only about Maths, Economics, Physics and Drawings, education is more than that.
Education is about knowing your country, your society, your culture, other countries,
knowledge in various Iields and to be open to what others excel in and to have a brieI
understanding oI their Iields. In short, it is much more global.

It is maniIest that the majority oI our youngsters are ignorant when it comes to any
Iields other than their own Iield oI study. This is probably one oI the reasons why some
youngsters indulge in drugs, alcoholism, smoking or sometimes hang out with Iriends doing
nothing when they have Iree time. This is because they don`t know anything else which they
could do to entertain themselves. We have thus identiIied a need Ior an entertaining activity
Ior Mauritians and made it as an opportunity Ior our new business though which we will earn
money but also create some sort oI indirect education and entertainment, thus alleviating
ignorance by making people look out oI their routine box.

Description of Business

As you have read in the Iront cover, the name oI the business is 7090 with the
slogan - We can all be Artists. The 'A in the word 'CreAte is in capital letter to draw the
3

attention oI the reader and make him/her wonder why it is written as such. In Iact, it stands
Ior 'Art. Hence, the letter A has a double meaning here: Create and Art. These 2 words were
chosen because it summarises what the business is all about.

The business involves pottery and painting. Pottery made oI diIIerent types oI clay,
depending upon the type oI object being made, will be produced. The business will be
promoting handicraIt. Hence, most oI the products will be hand made. Standard objects such
as bowls, plates, mugs and Ilower vases will be available on a larger scale than other products
such as Iigurines and other artistic sculptures which will only be used as samples. These
samples will be exposed so that iI a customer sees one oI them and is interested in buying
one, we can produce it and sell it to him/her. Hence, we will also provide customised
products on request.

The objects made will, unlike most objects made Irom pottery, be plain, without any
pattern except Ior 'iCreAte written at the bottom oI each object and they will be sold to
customers in that plain state. All these objects will be sold at a studio which we will rent Ior
the business purpose. The studio must be able to accommodate around 25-30 people with
table and seats. In the studio, all the necessary tools Ior painting (Ior e.g. palette and
paintbrushes) and diIIerent colours oI special paint meant Ior pottery purposes will be
available Ior Iree Ior the customers. Also, small accessories made oI clay such as alphabets,
Ilowers, stars, etc. will also be produced and sold to the customers. The customers can then
sit at a table and personalise the object they bought as per their taste. Design catalogues will
be available at the tables to help the customer decide the type oI pattern they may draw on
their pottery. DiIIerent types oI pattern will also be drawn on the walls oI the studio itselI to
guide the customers on the type oI pattern they can put on the product and thus, help them to
be creative. These patterns will also be like a sort oI interior decoration which nicely Iits the
context oI iCreAte. There will also be images oI Iamous artworks such as the Mona Lisa on
the walls. Special glue will be provided Ior Iree to allow the customers to stick the
accessories on their pottery. They can, hence, create their own patterns and ideas on the
objects they bought and this is where the name iCreAte and our slogan 'We can all be
Artists came Irom.

As mentioned earlier, we will also do customised products upon request. A customer
can bring a design and we shall do it Ior him/her. Our team will consist oI a proIessional
painter (artist), hence, iI the customer also ask Ior patterns or drawings to be made on the
object, our painter shall provide that service. This shows a constant innovating process as
customers will keep bringing their new ideas to us so that we can materialise them.

Also, as one oI our aims is to promote artist, the studio will have a Iree space which
will be used as a platIorm Ior artists. Anyone, be it musician, singer, painter, slam poet or
humorist can go on the platIorm and do a perIormance Ior Iree. This is the non-proIit aspect
oI iCreAte though, indirectly, it might also boost the number oI customers coming to the
studio. Also, classes on how to do pottery the traditional way can be provided to those who
are interested.
4

The vision oI iCreAte is to make Art part oI the Mauritian culture. The images oI
Iamous artworks on the walls will help increase the general knowledge oI Mauritians about
the Artworld and by providing a space Ior the local artist to perIorm, we are not only
allowing our customers to be exposed to the local talent but also giving the artist the
opportunity to have an audience Ior exposure oI his/her talent because, as we all know, when
there is a play or an art exposition, a very small number oI people will be interested in going
to see those. Our mission is to help more and more Mauritians discover all Iorms oI Art.

Competitive Advantage
Since iCreAte produces its own product and sells it directly to the customers and it
also provides the service oI providing Iree paint and pottery sessions, the business model is a
direct selling one where both goods and services are being sold directly to the customer. The
business is a novelty in Mauritius so there is no real competitor currently.

Our service creates a sustainable competitive advantage because iCreAte is the only
business which sells pottery and allows personalisation by customers. Also, being myselI a
student and aIter doing a survey among many students, it has been noted that there is a lack
oI space where youngsters can sit and chat in Mauritius. The most common places that young
Mauritians go so they can have a place to hang out are McDonalds, KFC and Food Courts.
These places are one oI the Iew places where people can sit and spend time. iCreAte has
identiIied this lack oI space and provides place Ior its customers to sit and have Iun. This
makes iCreAte even more attractive to the market and also brings it uniqueness.

Current Status & Requirements
iCreAte has currently 2 potters at its service. All oI them are amateur painters so we
need an experienced painter to complete the team with the 3 managers required Ior the
correct Iunctioning oI the business. An additional potter will be needed. Also, we usually dry
our pottery in a charcoal kiln or in the traditional way i.e. leave our works to dry on a drying
rack, however, since we intend to produce on a larger scale Ior the business, we cannot use
the traditional way as it will take too much time and Ior environmental and product quality
purposes, using a charcoal kiln will be inappropriate. Hence, we have decided that iCreAte
should either be provided with a gas or an electrical kiln so as to reduce pollution. The
complete list oI requirements Ior the start up is as Iollows:

Start Up Summary
The start-up expenses oI an amount equal to approximately Rs39, 640 include:
3

O Legal expenses Ior obtaining licenses and permits worth Rs7000.
O Marketing promotion expenses Ior the grand opening oI iCreAte through Ilyer printing
(2,000 Ilyers at Rs1.32) at an amount oI Rs2640.
O Insurance (general liability, workers' compensation and property casualty) coverage at a
total premium oI Rs10000
O Pre-paid rent expenses Ior one month at Rs7000
O Premises re-modelling in the amount oI Rs10000.
O Other start-up expenses including stationery (Rs500) and phone and utility deposits
(Rs2500).
The required start-up assets oI Rs502,000 include:
O Operating capital in the total amount oI Rs16200, which includes wages Ior the Iirst six
months
O Start-up inventory oI Rs191,000, which includes:
4 Clay- Rs171,000 (Provision Ior pottery production Ior the Iirst 6 months)
4 Paint- Rs20,000
O Equipment Ior the total amount oI Rs149,000:
4 Electric Kiln- Rs84,000
4 Mould Rs1000
4 Storage hardware (bins, rack, shelves) Rs5000
4 Counter area equipment (counter top, paint tubes, paint brush, palettes)- Rs6000
4 Store equipment (cash register, security, ventilation) Rs10000
4 OIIice equipment (PC, Iax/printer, phone, Iurniture, Iile cabinets) Rs40,000
4 Other miscellaneous expenses Rs3000
Total Amount Required Rs690, 640
Funding Ior the company comes Irom two major sources--owners' investments and loan. Two
major owners have contributed Rs200, 000 and Rs350, 000 which brings the total
investments to Rs550, 000. The remaining Rs140640 needed to cover the start-up expenses
and assets came Irom the loan approved by the Development Bank oI Mauritius-SME Dept.
in the amount oI $200,000.

Management Team

The Management Team
The business will require
O 3 managers
One who will manage the pottery production, another will manage the sales and
customised orders and a third will manage the paint and accessories supply to customers.
6

Each oI them will require diIIerent skills as their task diIIer. For instance, only two oI them
will have direct contact with the customers. These two will require good marketing and
communication skills, Iriendly and welcoming attitude.

Less emphasis will be put on these qualities Ior the manager who will be in charge oI
the pottery production as the most important qualities Ior him/her to do this task will be good
leadership skills. This is because he/she will have to lead the employees into producing the
required amount oI pottery. He/she will also need to have the ability to work under pressure
as iI request Ior more pottery is ask Ior, the products have to b made a soon as possible.

Also, the manager will also have to be open to the ideas oI the employees as pottery
is an art and art is inIluenced by inspiration. II an employee wants to create a new object,
he/she should consider the employee`s idea. Since we have a section where we display
samples oI diIIerent objects which are unlike the standard objects i.e. mugs, plates, vases and
bowls, iI an employee creates a new design and iI it is a successIul one, it can be added to
that section. It is important here to note the way this technique oI displaying diIIerent objects
promotes innovation.

Hence,
1. Pottery Production Manager
O Good Leadership Skills
O HSC Passed with Maths
O Having knowledge in Art subjects and/or Pottery will be desirable
O Wage: Rs6000

2. Pottery Sales Manager will be the one oI the owner who also has the
qualiIications to do the accounting part oI the business. He will be taking account oI
everything and will provide all the required resources.

3. Paint & Tools Manager
O Good interpersonal communication skills
O Welcoming attitude
O HSC passed with maths
O Wage:Rs6000

7

The owner, then, takes account oI everything Irom those managers and provides all
the required resources. In this business, the owner will also be one oI three managers.

O 3 Potters
At least 3 potters will be required Ior iCreAte. They will have to be skilled in pottery
and must have received training at a valid Training institution. Work experience oI at least 2
years in this Iield will be desirable.
Wage: Rs3000

O 1 Professional Potter
The technical expertise required is a proIessional potter who will be able to train the
new employees so that they improve and be as good as a proIessional potter should be. One
oI the relative oI the owner is a proIessional potter with an experience oI 8 years in the Iield
and also provides training at her place. She is ready to provide training Ior the employees oI
iCreAte. Her Iees will depend amount oI time Ior which she will be training each oI them.
She will also regular come at iCreAte to check the electric kiln Ior Iree. She will be coaching
the potters oI iCreAte Ior the Iirst 2 weeks to make sure the kiln is being operated
appropriately.

O 1 Professional Painter
A proIessional painter will also be needed to train the employees and Ior the
realisation oI customised products. HSC with Art as Subject plus additional Courses in Art
(work experience will be desirable)
Wage: Rs6000

Advisors
For iCreAte, there will be 2 advisers. One shall be one oI my relative, my uncle who
is a counsellor and advisor at the Ministry oI Arts and Culture and who, I strongly believe,
will be provide good advising as he already works in a Iield which is related to the business.
The other advisor will be a very good Iriend whom I trust and who was working as a Iinancial
analyst at SBM and is now working on a joint venture among various institutions. Being
already in the world oI business, his advice will indeed be oI great help.

Key professional service providers
The owner has a Bachelor degree in Accounting hence handling accounting issues,
cash Ilows and legal matters with the help and advice oI the advisors will not be a diIIicult
task. However, iI the business is expanded in the Iuture, the idea oI appointing a proIessional
service provider Ior these tasks will be reconsidered as business expansion will entail more
workload and responsibility Ior the owner.

Industry Analysis
Industry description
As iCreAte is a novelty in Mauritius, no speciIic data can be Iound concerning the
potential number oI customers who would be interested in iCreate. ThereIore,a survey was
carried out with around 40 students and 5 other persons who were parents with children. 15
oI which are Art students. All the 15 oI them said that they would be ready to pay to come
and have Iun in iCreAte and so did 5 other students who are also musicians. 18 out oI the
remaining 20 also showed a lot oI interest in participating in the Iun atmosphere provided by
iCreAte. The 5 parents who were interviewed said that iCreAte can be a very good place to
spend some time together especially Ior Iamilies with little kids.
The survey showed that people are interested to come to iCreAte and that the market
iCreAte can receive consist oI people oI diIIerent ages ranging Irom 6 60 yr olds. The
market is segmented into 3 diIIerent types oI persons namely people who are in the Iield oI
Art, non-artist youngsters looking Ior new activities, Iamilies looking Ior a place to spend
time together.

Target Market
Our main target remains youngsters as we see a very large number oI potential
customers among them especially because they are the Iun loving ones who are ready to go
Ior new things whereas old people tend to be reluctant to changes. They are also the ones who
would be more inclined to try the open platIorm provided in the studio. iCreAte can become
the place to meet peers and have Iun. For us, this will provide a unique possibility Ior
building a loyal client base.

SWOT Analysis
The strengths oI iCreAte are:
- It is a novelty and hence, it has barely any competitors and it is also making people
curious, making them want to come and see what kind oI service this iCreAte is
providing to them
- It provides space Ior people to sit together and spend time having Iun. This Ieature oI
iCreAte can be a magnet Ior customers mainly youngsters who would want to sit
somewhere with Iriends.
- It provides pottery sessions Ior those interested
10

- It provides a platIorm Ior people to express themselves in some Iorm oI art. This can
be a very important boost to the number oI customers.
- Customised products can be made.
- It allows people to personalise their pottery the way they want
- Buyers do not have a bargaining power as there are no current substitutes to iCreAte`s
services
However, iCreAte does have a eakness which is:
- The Iact that it is novel can also be a disadvantage as it may as well not bring as much
customers as we expected because it has been said a lot oI times that unless you
experience something, you will never really know what it is all about. So some
customers might just not come not unable to judge whether it will be worth the
money. However, we think that the probability that this happens is relatively low
compared to the inverse happening.

Potential threats:
- Knowing how important our raw materials are to us, our suppliers can start bargaining
the prices by raising them up. In Iact, this is actually one oI the threats to our business
- Another threat to the business is the entry oI potential competitors getting into the
industry iI the demand Ior services like the one provided by iCreAte increases. This
will be seen as an opportunity to many.

By comparing the strengths and weaknesses oI iCreAte, we can easily predict a very
high proIit potential in this business.

Competitive position within target market
Since iCreAte is a novel business in Mauritius, it does not have any real potential
competitor. Hence, iCreAte has a monopoly on this new business opportunity.

Buying Patterns
The major reason Ior customers to return to a speciIic place is a great quality, Iun and
pleasant atmosphere and in the case oI iCreAte, it is also because oI its uniqueness in the
country. We believe that iCreAte has all the necessary attributes to make customers return
again and again when they have Iree time to relax and entertain themselves into doing
something that they won`t be doing anywhere else.

Marketing Plan
11

Product Ieasibility and Pricing strategy
What we are proposing is deIinitely realistic and Ieasible. In some cases, there are
paints which take a lot oI time to dry but give very good results. II our customer asks Ior that
special paint but will be unable to wait Ior his work to dry, he is allowed to leave it at the
studio and given a card so next time he comes, he can take his work upon submission oI the
card. We deIinitely believe that the service and products provided by iCreAte will create a
want Ior such innovative services and products. Hence, we are optimistic about the growth oI
the market Ior the services oI iCreAte once it becomes known to the public.
The packaging oI the products will range Irom a simple box to decorative ones iI the
customer wishes to giIt it to someone. All the packaging will bear the name and the slogan oI
the business.
The pricing strategy used by iCreAte will depend upon the cost incurred to do the
products and also the cost oI the bulk paints. The painting service provided to the customers
is on an hourly basis. They will have to pay a special amount to stay in the studio Ior 1 hour
and use as much paint as they want (Ior e.g. Rs50/h) or they can choose to pay a Iixed
discounted amount (Ior e.g. Rs350) to use the studio and its paints Ior a whole day i.e. Irom
9AM to 5PM. All these prices will be determined according to the cost oI paints provided and
the cost oI the rent oI the studio. The cost oI the pottery will be excluded Ior the studio hourly
Iees as it will be Ior sale and hence, paid separately Irom the service provided.
For customised orders, the prices will depend upon the complexity oI the design oI
the pottery and the patterns and the total cost in producing the end product.

Marketing Communications Strategy
Since our main target is youngsters, we intend to do advertising oI iCreAte through
Facebook which is one oI the leading networking websites among Mauritians in the age range
oI 16 and above. We shall do so by creating groups promoting the product and services oI
iCreAte and inviting as many people as possible. Also, the business will be launched during
the school holidays to attract as much students as possible. For the Iirst 3 days, our services
will be provided at a low rate so that people would come and try the iCreAte experience
without having to worry iI it will be worth the money or not. For more advertisement,
brochures(or Ilyers) about the launching and 3 days discount rate will be made an distributed
near schools and at bus stations. Also, perIormers will be invited to present something to the
public on the open platIorm. The best perIormer during each oI those three days will receive
a prize Irom iCreAte thus also, attracting other artists to the event.#
12

Customer Support
By providing special classes to customers interested in pottery and also providing
customised products Ior them, our relationship with them are strengthen as we have more
opportunities to communicate with them. This will make them acquainted to us thus
promoting a Iriendly atmosphere every time they come to iCreAte. Also, these classes will
make them come to iCreAte more oIten.

Operations Plan
Methods of production
There are various methods oI production Ior pottery depending on the type oI object
being made. iCreAte will be however, using the handicraIt methods, namely the traditional
hand made, the throwing, jiggering and jolleying method with the potter`s wheel and the
slipcasting method Ior Iigurines which cannot be made in the traditional way.
However, iI business is expanded in Iuture to cater Ior a bigger market, more
machines will be introduced in the business though still promoting handicraIt by providing
pottery classes.
The business will consist oI only a Iew persons, 3-4 employees who will all be trained
by our pottery proIessional and proIessional painter.
Location
iCreAte is renting a space at Phoenix Les Halles at a rent oI Rs7000 monthly as it is a
place where many youngsters come to because oI the shopping complexes, inIrastructure and
security Iacilities. II the business proves to be very proIitable, we will start building our own
studio. The pottery is made at the location itselI as part oI the Iloor area will be the back
oIIice where no customers shall have access unless Ior pottery classes and where all the
pottery will be made upon on order. The remaining part oI the Iloor will be Ior the customers.
Tables and seats worth oI accommodating around 25 persons will be available and a special
space will be leIt Ior the 'Artist Open PlatIorm oI iCreAte.

"uality Control
iCreAte will be open to the ideas oI customers when it comes to the design oI objects
to be made. Customised objects can be ordered. Hence, iCreAte is constantly innovating it s
products as per the taste oI the customers providing better quality service to them. Surveys
shall be done non a regular basis by giving Irequent customers oI iCreAte a Iorm to Iill
13

concerning things they want to change or add to iCreAte services. By doing so, the quality oI
our services will be kept at its best. This will only be beneIicial to the business as it will meet
the expectations oI our customers and thereIore, securing a loyal customer base.

Financial Plan
The owners have provided the company with suIIicient start-up capital. With
successIul management aimed at establishing and growing a loyal customer base, the
company will see its net worth increasing over the years. iCreAte will maintain a healthy
67.83 gross margin, which combined with reasonable operating expenses, will provide
enough cash to Iinance Iurther growth
Financing will be provided by both owners` savings as iCreAte is a partnership business
which will amount to around Rs550000. Additional loan oI Rs200000 received by
Development Bank oI Mauritius. Funds/loans ratio 2.75
