How to configure a mail client for Hotmail POP3?

POP3 is an email protocol which allows you to receive mails from your Hotmail inbox to almost any e-mail software program that you have installed on your mobile phone or PC. It must be noted that you dont have to do anything in your Hotmail account to enable POP Access.You just need to configure the email client for the Hotmail pop settings! Prior to that, Hotmail had supported an HTTP protocol and one could access the emails in only a few Microsoft products like MS Outlook using the Outlook Connector. Yahoo
Yahoo POP3 and SMTP support has been there for long unlike Hotmail POP3 support by Microsoft. Though Yahoo supports POP3 and SMTP protocols for a long time now, it provides this support for free in Yahoo Asia but not in other countries at the time of writing this article. When you check your mails in Gmail or any such mail program, they will automatically check your Yahoo mail account and download any new messages. Yahoo POP3 and SMTP Settings:


Find below the basic POP3 settings for configuring any email program where you want to receive Yahoo mails.

POP3 Server Set the POP server for incoming mails as pop.mail.yahoo.com. You will have to enable SSL and use 995 for Port. SMTP Server Set the SMTP server for outgoing mails as smtp.mail.yahoo.com. You will also have to make sure that SSL is enabled and use 465 for port. you must also enable authentication for this to work. Account Name or Login Name Your Yahoo Mail ID i.e. your email address without the domain @yahoo.com. Email Address Your Yahoo Mail address i.e. your email address including the domain @yahoo.com. E.g. myname@yahoo.com Password Your Yahoo Mail password.

Yahoo! Mail Plus users may have to set POP server as plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com and SMTP server as plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com.

You will have to enable Allow your Yahoo Mail to be POPed under POP and Forwarding, to send and receive Yahoo mails through any other email client.

Log on to your Yahoo email account

If youre using the new Yahoo Mail interface, Click Options in the upperright corner of the page and then choose More Options from the pull-down menu. Then, on the left side of the Mail Options window, click on POP & Forwarding option. If youre using the Classic Mail interface, click Mail Options in the upper-right corner of the interface and then click POP and Forwarding link from the menu on the left of Mail Options window. On the Pop and Forwarding page, choose the Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed option. You can instead choose to forward your emails to an external email account by choosing the option Forward your Yahoo! Mail and specifying the external email address. But you cant Forward and POP your mail simultaneously. Also note that forwarded mail skips your Yahoo mail box and go straight to the new address you designate.

Next, you need to configure your Yahoo POP3 and SMTP settings (if you had chosen Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed option) in the other mail program, to access Yahoo mails via through it.

How to configure Gmail to read and reply to Yahoo mails?


Find below the steps to configure Gmail for Yahoo POP3 and SMTP.

Logon to your Gmail Account Click Settings in Gmail and open the Accounts tab In the Get mail from other accounts section, click Add another mail account Enter your full Yahoo email address and click Next Step Enter your Yahoo email address, User name (without the @yahoo.com) and Password in their respective text boxes Gmail automatically chooses the appropriate Yahoo POP server. Specify 995 against port If youd like to keep a copy of each mail that Gmail retrieves, in your Yahoo account as well, select the Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server check-box. This way, you can access mails via both Yahoo mail and Gmail Yahoo mail does not mandate you to use a secure connection (SSL) though it is preferable to send and receive Yahoo Mail messages through SSL.Hence, select the Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail check-box. In case you dont choose this option, you should specify the pop3 server port as 110. If you do like to distinguish your Yahoo mails from other mails, choose Label incoming messages option and use any preferred label. You can select an existing label or create a new one from the drop-down list. If you dont want your Yahoo mails to show up in your Inbox and you want to automatically archive them, choose Archive incoming messages option Next, Click Add Account Once your Yahoo mail account has been added successfully, youll have the option of setting it as a custom From address. This allows you to compose

messages in Gmail, but have them appear to be sent from your Yahoo mail box. Click Yes to set up a custom From address. That is all! You can now read Yahoo mails in Gmail and even reply to them from Gmail. Enjoy. Gmail SMTP server can be used to send emails from any of your favorite email client.You can send email. using any email address, from any network that lets you connect to the Gmail SMTP server. The following are the Gmail SMTP server and port settings for sending emails through Gmail from any email client program:

Under Outgoing mail, set Gmail SMTP server address as smtp.gmail.com. Configure Gmail SMTP user name as: your full Gmail address (including @gmail.com) Google Apps users may have to enter username@your_domain.com. Configure Gmail SMTP password as: Your Gmail password. Configure Gmail SMTP port as: 465 or 587. Configure Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required as: yes.

If you tried configuring your SMTP server on port 465 (with SSL) and port 587 (with TLS), but are still having trouble sending emails, try configuring the SMTP server to use port 25 (with SSL). But make sure SSL is active for SMTP in your email client. Also ensure allow authentication is active for the SMTP server in your email client. Before using your Gmail Account as your SMTP server, make sure that you have enabled Gmail POP3 or Gmail IMAP through settings in your Gmail Account. Earlier we saw how to enable Gmail POP3 to access Gmail mails in any POP3 client.Once youve enabled POP3 in Gmail, you can configure your POP3 mail client to download your Gmail mails. The following are the Gmail POP3 settings to configure any email client program:

Gmail POP server: pop.gmail.com You should set this as the pop server in your email client program. Gmail POP user name: For user name, specify your full Gmail handle (including @gmail.com) Google Apps users may have to enter username@your_domain.com Gmail POP password: It is also important to set your Gmail password in the client software. Gmail POP port: 995 Set this as the port in the email client software.

Gmail POP TLS/SSL required: Yes i.e. ensure that TLS/SSL authentication is marked as required in the email client.

To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings: Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465) Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995) POP Yahoo! Google GMail Settings The Google GMail service offers email client access for retrieving and sending emails through your Gmail account. However, for security reasons, GMail uses POP3 over an SSL connection, so make sure your email client supports encrypted SSL connections. Google Gmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995) Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP or smtp.gmail.com (TLS enabled, port 587) MSN Mail Settings The MSN email service allows you to use the MSN POP3 and SMTP servers to access your MSN mailbox. MSN Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop3.email.msn.com (port 110, using Secure Password Authentication - SPA) MSN Outgoing Mail Server - smtp.email.msn.com (select "My outgoing server requires authentication") Lycos Mail Settings The Lycos Mail Plus service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Lycos mailbox. Netscape Internet Service also supports AOL Communicator, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and other POP3 e-mail software. The outgoing mail server needs SSL support, so make sure your email client software supports SSL connections over the SMTP protocol.
