Cylinder Liners

Aftermarket Parts

John Deere cylinder liners heat-treated and designed for even surface wear
Time-proven performance
Theres a reason why John Deere engines and equipment have such a strong reputation: Quality. While other manufacturers claim their repair parts meet or exceed OEM specifications for John Deere equipment, the best way to ensure performance is to use engine parts designed BY John Deere FOR John Deere engines. Our parts and service restore the original quality and performance of your machines. As with the other components of an engine cylinder, the liner is subjected to considerable pressure, friction and heat. John Deere cylinder liners are manufactured for durability and reliable performance.

Hardness vs. Depth

Hardness, Rc

Hardened surfaces
John Deere liners are heat-treated to a precise hardness to increase durability and life. When you factor in two specific measurements case depth and run out youll see how John Deere liners are engineered to perform better than the Reliance liners. Case depth measures how far the heat-treat process has penetrated the surface of the liner. It is defined by the transition point where a metal changes from hard to soft (indicated by yellow line in graph). John Deere liner specifications require the hardness to cross the transition point between specific depths in millimeters (indicated by the two vertical dotted lines shown in the graph). This produces a hard surface with high wear characteristics and a core structure that is strong and crack resistant. If the heat-treat hardening process goes too deep, the inside structure of the liner may become brittle. The Reliance liner (indicated by the gray line in the graph), is very hard from the surface to the internal structure, making it prone to cracking and flaking.

John Deere Reliance

Run out measures the distance from the end of the liner to where the heat treatment stops. If the material is hardened all the way up to the edge, it becomes very brittle and is likely to crack. The Reliance liner is hardened all the way to the bottom edge, making that edge very prone to cracking. If the liner material is not heat-treated close enough to the top edge as in the Reliance liner the piston ring will travel over unhardened material, resulting in accelerated wear on the ring and the liner.

Graphite distribution
Genuine John Deere liners feature random and even graphite distribution. This ensures consistent material properties and even surface wear, which minimizes oil consumption caused by liner scuffing or wear. The Reliance liner does not meet our tolerances because it has unacceptable iron characteristics. This, along with the uneven graphite distribution, results in a potential for graphite pull-out, whereby the liner can flake and have a bad surface finish. Whether your engine powers an agricultural, construction, forestry, consumer/commercial, or OEM machine, you dont want to compromise when it comes to quality and reliability. For honest value and reliable performance, demand the best genuine John Deere parts and service.
