Spacecraft Engineering BE-06 CSE (Project work/Assignment) An educational institute has decided to launch a small satellite having mass

and volume of CubeSat specifications i.e. mass of 1.33kg and volume of 10 cm cube. Due to some launch constraints, there are three options for the target orbit of operation. i. ii. iii. 600 Km circular orbit with 40 degree inclination 650 km Sun Synchronous orbit 700km apogee and 200km perigee elliptical orbit with 30 degree elevation

You are required to do the feasibility study of the above orbits to find, compare and comment on the following parameters (You have to submit a formal report) i. Orbital Period ii. Maximum eclipse time iii. Radiation effects iv. Orbit decay due to atmospheric drag v. Illumination time

Hints i. ii. iii. Use some standard text for the orbital calculation Same for the eclipse period Use SPENVIS for the space environmental effects (http://www.spenvis.oma.be) a. Make a new account on the above mentioned website b. Use your IST email address for registration purpose c. Most of the analysis steps are self explanatory d. Define a new project and give it a proper name in the format ICUBE-{your first name} e.g. ICUBE-Rehan or the name of one of the member of group e. Define the target orbit using the spacecraft trajectories link f. Keep the mission segments to 1 and mission duration to 1 year g. Leave other parameters as default but change account for atmospheric drag to YES, leave the settings of the atmospheric to default value h. All the above mentioned orbits are of general type i. Choose start of the orbit value as your choice j. Change the apogee, perigee, altitude and inclination values according the values defined above k. Leave rest of the values as default l. Run the module to generate the desired orbit m. Plot various plots about the orbit and interpret and discuss them in your report

n. o. p. q. r. s. t. u. v. w. x. y.

Now go back to the main page Plot the trapped radiation models using the default settings Interpret and discuss these plots in your report Now go back to the main page Obtain the plot for radiation dose using the default settings and discuss these results in your report Now go back to the main page Find the single events upset rates for 5 silicon devices using the default values Add these tables to your report and discuss these values Now go back to the main page Click the miscellaneous link and then satellite illumination link Leave the parameters as default Plot for direct illumination, direct illumination, Earth infrared radiation, Earth reflected sunlight, and total radiation and discuss these plots in your report.

Note: All of you have to do this project in groups (the groups for your final year projects). The due date for this work is 8th Nov, 2010. You have to also submit the login and password for the above mention website so that I can also see you work there. The weight age of this work is 4%
