A

FORMER restaurant on Milford Docks might not be

everyones first choice as premises for a new
veterinary practice, especially if it was in need of
major renovation. Luckily, Billa Schleicher and her partner
Dave Clark saw the sites potential, and after years of
looking for the perfect location, set about turning a tired
shell into an award-winning modern surgery.
Working on a limited budget and without an architect, practice
veterinarian Billa designed the buildings new layout herself.
I wanted to create a building that would be of high quality, and
create a pleasant and comfortable environment for my staff and
patients alike, she said.
Due to the long, thin layout of the building, this wasnt always easy,
but Billa approached the task with surgical precision, thinking
through what was required for each
area and thereby optimising the
work flow.
This flow is what most impressed
the judges at this years Veterinary
Practice Design Awards,
held in County Durham
earlier this month. Run by
the British Veterinary
Hospital Association
(BVHA), the competition
celebrates excellence in practice design, and is judged on criteria
such as use of space and value for money.
The work itself took four months to complete, and the practice
now boasts three consultation rooms, prep room, surgical theatre,
X-ray facilities and kennels. Every inch of the building was put to
good use, with the old walk-in safe being converted into a pharmacy
and the former kitchen being transformed into a disabled toilet.
Receptionist Jayne Molley said: The building is designed so that
youre not trawling X-rays from one place to another, or having to
move anaesthetised animals around from one end of the building
into theatre. Everything is contained and ready to hand.
This young practice, which only recently celebrated its second
birthday, incorporates many innovative design elements such as: a
one-way window in the waiting room, colourful photographs and an
impressive use of glass that allows natural light into the operating
theatre. This attention to detail in no small way ensured All Pets Vet
Cares success in a competition category that attracted more than
50 entries from across the UK, and with it, an accolade that Billa
and her team can be truly proud of.
