Introduction
A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions, and has in recent decades been extended to use by VIPs and celebrities at formal events. The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC. When the title character returns from Troy, his vengeful wife Clytemnestra who offers him a red path to walk upon greets him: "Now my beloved, step down from your chariot, and let not your foot, my lord, touch the Earth. Servants, let there be spread before the house he never expected to see, where Justice leads him in, a crimson path." While theres dispute about carpet color in the Agamemnon, its quite likely that purple carpets would have been more standard than red Ancient Greece and Rome. Purple was the color from Ancient Greece that was associated with royalty, with Tyrian purple in Ancient Greece one of the most expensive dyes to purchase. So early red carpets were more than likely purple carpets. In modern times, the red carpet is almost never purple, and even royal families may tread on a red rather than purple carpet. Tossing down a long red carpet is a way to assure important people that they are indeed important, though as Agamemnon noted, no mortal is too good to have their feet touch the regular ground. Some of the big red carpet events, such as the Academy Awards, may have a more purposeful reason for choosing to carpet a path to a theater entrance. When ladies wear full-length gowns or gowns with trains, dragging the gown along several hundred feet of dirty sidewalk may be undesirable. Should an Academy Award winner accept an award with a dirty gown, Joan Rivers and other fashion commentators would be shocked.

Some argue that the red carpet is now too much in use. Instead of being reserved for special occasions only, virtually every premiere of a film, and almost all award shows, large or small, feature a red-colored carpet, upon which guests walk, to theaters or auditoriums. Proceeding down the carpet is a way for actors and performers of other types to receive media attention, answer questions, and give information about the designers of their clothes and jewelry who usually loan expensive items to stars in exchange for promotional statements by the star. Where once media only covered the big red carpet events, just about every night on programs devoted to celebrities and VIPs, stars are photographed at some type of red carpet event.

What is Bollywood?
Bollywood is the nickname given to the Indian film industry - it's a play on the word Hollywood. The B comes from Bombay (also known as Mumbai), a big city in India. Bollywood is massive. It makes up to 800 films a year - twice as many as Hollywood and about 14 million Indian people go to the cinema everyday. Films are made so fast that sometimes actors on set shoot scenes for four different films at a time - using the same actors and the same backgrounds. And sometimes the scripts are even hand-written!

Where did it all start?

In 1899 the first Indian short film was screened, and Bollywood was born. Just like in Hollywood the films were silent to begin with, then in the 1930s the films became 'talkies'.

Many Indians came to live and work in Britain around fifty years ago, and they brought their culture with them. Now, Bollywood's biggest audience outside India is in Britain.

Why is Bollywood so big now?

2002 was the year it all kicked off for Bollywood in Britain. A season of Indian films was shown on TV when India and England played in a big cricket tournament. A department store devoted a summer to Indian fashion, and shops everywhere were full of colourful clothes, bindis, bangles, saris and henna. Bombay Dreams, a new West End musical, was a sell out. Special cinemas also showed Bollywood classic films and had exhibitions featuring Bollywood film posters. Lagaan, a huge Bollywood hit, was nominated for an Oscar. The charts were full of Bhangra, with Timbaland, Dr Dre and the Neptunes sampling Indian beats and Punjabi MC having big hits. India was even featured in cool car adverts. Bollywood films have managed to cross over and now it's not just Indian families watching them - they're being shown in big cinemas across the UK.

What makes Bollywood films unusual?

Bollywood films are really colourful and crammed with singing, dancing, and loads of costume changes.

The also used to stick to a formula of boy meets girl, they fall in love and they struggle for family approval. There's also always a hero, a heroine, a vamp and a comedy sidekick. Romance is big but there's no snogging!

Dressing up stars at red carpet events is huge business: Cavalli

Film, Fashion & Image

Noted Italian stylist Roberto Cavalli Thursday confirmed what is arguably the fashion industrys worst kept secret: that Hollywood stars are often paid to showcase a designers creation at red carpet events. Yes, its true. Some designers do pay stars to wear their clothes at red carpet events like the Oscars, Cavalli admitted somewhat reluctantly at a session on Bollywood vs Hollywood at the International Herald Tribune Sustainable Luxury Summit here. The Oscars are such a major event that what a celebrity is wearing becomes the talk of the town. You feel so proud when some star wears your brand at these events. It gives your brand amazing publicity, so if a Hollywood diva is wearing your brand, it adds to your clientele, the designer maintained. So, dressing up a star at these events has become a huge business. It is no more about pleasure and comfort. There is tough competition and everyone wants to look good, Cavalli added. There is a flip side too. At one event, Sharon Stone was to wear a Valentino gown but she turned up in a Valentino T-shirt instead. Her picture made it to the front pages around the world but Valentino held his head in his hand for three days wondering why she had done this to him, Cavalli said. On another occasion, actress Jennifer Hudson had promised to wear a Cavalli outfit but backed out at the last moment. They are free to wear what they want. Its a question of personal choice as well, the designer explained. All this came from a man whose clothes the likes of Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce Knowles, Charlize Theron and Victoria Beckham.

Are gowns more suited for the red carpet?

Film, Fashion & Image

The scene is Bangkoks green carpet at an awards function for Indian cinema, recently. Where not one of Bollywoods bold and beautiful wore (and if in an eco-friendly city, green) international gala film awards functions like the Oscars and Cannes? Designer Shaina NC deplored Bollywoods fashion sense in Bangkok, Its a pity no actress wore the traditional Indian sari on this international platform where the world was watching whos wearing what. Instead of aping the West, Bollywoods glam girls should have taken pride in wearing a sari and making a style statement. Why dont we flaunt it when we really are proud of our traditions? However, designer Rocky S defended Bollywoods dress code in Bangkok, Since awards are extremely formal functions, our actresses want to look their formal best, and gowns look truly elegant and beautiful. Also, today our actresses take great care of their bodies and can carry Western attire like a gown with great elan. So, why not? Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra, who received an award there himself, also rued the fact that no actress wore a sari in Bangkok. Katrina Kaif was to wear a black net sari designed by me, but decided against it because she wasnt feeling too well, revealed Manish. As an anchor, Urmila Matondkar sported a gown and then a nice lehenga. Kareena danced for songs from Jab We Met and Tashan but in a bright green cape, blue ghagra and shimmery harem pants. She did wear a sari at another event, though. He added that while Western gowns dominated the green carpet, Indianness was exemplified in the rest of the show. No matter, its what the stars wear thats what Indians and fans all around the world see first. And, eat your hearts out Kareena, Katrina, Urmila & Co., you would have looked just as gorgeous and sexy in six yards of silk. Designer Vikram Phadnis, who is also big in Bollywood and who presented a fusion wear ramp show in Bangkok, admitted that while the green carpet was a great platform to flaunt ones fashion quotient, I think everyone wants a change from the bling Indian wear. The look in right now is very classic and feminine. And the actresses indeed looked lovely in their gowns, didnt they?

What then differentiates Hollywood from Bollywood?

Film, Fashion & Image

Hollywood actresses are very much into fashion and brands and show off and their clothes even if they dont reflect their personal style statements, while Bollywood actresses are very warm and wear what they comfortable in, Fashion comes very easily to Indian women as every one of them wants to look beautiful yet sensual at the same time, India is a country of colours with amazing artisans who are its jewels and we create beautiful pieces of art.
