Short-Haul SDH Microwave Radio Systems The MDRS 155 S, MDRS 155 C and MDRS 155 N digital microwave radio systems from Marconi are designed for short and medium range transmission optimised for use in SDH networks. They fulfil all the relevant ITU and ETSI standards for SDH systems. Thanks to their full SDH compatibility and their integration into network management systems via a Q interface these microwave radio systems represent real and easy to manage network elements. They are lowcost and reliable alternatives to cablebound transmission systems, and are simple and quick to implement. The transmission rate of the microwave radio systems is STM-1 or, optionally protected STM-4. The signal is transmitted by using a robust, high system gain modulation or even better by using a high spectrum efficient modulation. The baseband interface for STM-1 can be designed as an electrical or optical interface. Freely available bytes in the SOH of the STM-1 signal can be used to transmit an additional 2 Mbit/s wayside channel and several 64 kbit/s service channels. polarisations. This doubles the transmission capacity, so that, depending on the frequency pattern, up to 6xSTM-1 or one protected STM-4 signal can be transmitted via one antenna. A high system gain is achieved by a very robust 16 MLQAM modulation which allows the signal transmission in 55 or 56 MHz channels. The high system gain offers the possibility to Maximal reachable hop length dependent of the local rain-rate transmit the STM-1 signal over longer distances than it is possible with higher modulation schemes. If frequency is rare, the high spectrum efficient 128 MLQAM modulation allows maximum transmission capacity .Together with the implemented automatic transmit power control (ATPC) that supports the maximal range of 15 dB a high frequency reuse is guaranteed. The use of ATPC reduces the effects of co-channel and adjacent channel interference in a microwave radio network with high traffic density and considerably reduces the power consumpcontrol channel tion under normal Transmitter conditions. The Receiver highly flexible, softwarecontrolled ATPC allows the correcAutomatic Transmit Power Control (ATPC) tion of up- and down-fading and can easily be adapted to local conditions by configuring the best received signal level and transmit power. The transmit power level in operation is controlled by the received level over an control channel that allows optimum performance of the link with minimal bit errors even in case of intensive rainfall.

Protection switching Various additional protection switching functions, such as 1+1 line protection and hot standby increase the availability and quality of the transmission link. Because of flat fading under bad weather condition in the STM-1 short-haul frequency bands the protection cannot avoid transmission degradation but it offers bit error free protection switchSTM-1 ing in case of equipment faults. This kind of switching is called line protection. It offers an high system gain solution because there is no additional loss produced by switching components 1+1 protection mechanism (Hot standby, line protection) in the transmission link.

1+1 line protection using two frequencies and one or two antennas

The microwave radio line protection switching is independent of SDH network protection switching and is implemented as Regenerator Section Protection. Any existing Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) or Subnetwork Connection Protections (SNCP) are not affected. The control channel required for microwave radio protection switching is transported in a media dependent byte of the Regenerator Section Overhead. The switchover at the receiving side is performed in the baseband bit-synchronously and therefore without interruption. In case of line protection the switchover is bit-error free. Error pulses or early warning pulses and alarm signals from the system are used as criteria which lead to a protection-switching before the implemented forward error correction (FEC) is unable to correct the faults. As an option the integrated 1+1 protection switching can be upgraded to a n+1 or n+2 protected configuration. Subsequent extensions up to 4+2 or reductions back to 1+0 can be implemented without interruption. If only one channel is available in the frequency band, equipment protection can be optionally implemented with a 1+1 hot standby configuration.

System description
The systems MDRS 155 S, MDRS 155 N and MDRS 155 C consists of 3 independent system components. The antenna, the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. The size of the antenna depends on the requirements and can vary from 0,15 m up to 2 m. Part of the antenna is the feeding system which is available for dual and single polar operation. The outdoor unit (ODU) is mounted close to the antenna and is connected via flexible waveguide. Integrated solutions without waveguide are also possible. In case of hot standby protection a low loss switch connects 2 ODUs to one antenna. The ODU contains the transmit and receive amplifier. The transmitted signal is converted from the radio frequency to the intermediate frequency and vice versa. Integrated highly efficient overvoltage protection components ensure safe operation.

Outdoor unit (right) and integrated 60 cm antenna (left)

The indoor unit (IDU) is mounted inside a building and is connected to the ODU via an easy to install coaxial cable. The distance between IDU and ODU can be up to 300 m. The IDU consists of one single shelf and can be installed in ETSI or 19 cabinets. Optional wall installation is possible. Features like ATPC and protection switching control, SDH baseband, wayside and service channel processing, error correction, modulation and demodulation are done in this unit which is electronically configurable. The extremely large-scale integration of the functions in ASICs and the use of the most advanced technologies allow not only the dimensions and power loss to be considerably reduced, but also the avail-

ability and quality of the system to be substantially improved. Long years experience and the close contact to our customers ensure these improvements. There are two 16 MLQAM IDUs available, one which is optimised for natural cooling using thermal convection (part of the system MDRS 155 N), the other one is optimised in size with an intelligent cooling management (part of the system MDRS 155 C). The components components of the two systems are compatible to each other. The MDRS 155 S with the new 128 MLQAM IDU and ODU forms a new radio family. MDRS 155 N The indoor unit using natural thermal convection is designed in a modular way. An upgrade from 1+0 or 1+1 is possible. The upgrade can easily be done by adding Special features: Easy to handle, equipment supplier independent, network management concept Upgrade from 1+0 to 1+1 in the same rack modules to the 1+0 shelf. Modulator, demodulator and the central power supply of the system can be protected on demand, if required. The flexible shelf is 9 HU in height. As option, an overvoltage protection for the indoor unit is available. This component is mounted on top of the shelf. No additional overvoltage components are required.

Indoor unit in 1+0 configuration

The integrated network management concept offers flexible configuration of all parameters. To get remote access to the equipment and to connect the radio system to the used network management tool, embedded 64 kbit/s channels of the STM-1 signal are used. The embedded channels ensure an easy to handle equipment supplier independent network management connections. The standardised STM-1 baseband interface enables electrical or optical interfacing to other systems with adaptable connectors.

MDRS 155 C

Compact indoor unit in 1+0 configuration

Further developments, a higher integration of functions and the optimisation to a 1+0 configurations allows the reduction in size of the existing indoor unit without quality reduction. The shelf was reduced to 1 HU, that enables a rack installation in only 2 HU including the required cabling and cooling. Thermal management which is highly critical for such compact devices is performed by an intelligent thermal central subsystem. This subsystem protects the unit safely against damages in case of overheating and enables the exchange of fans in operation without traffic interruption. The fan redundancy allows a safe operation in case of faults. The fault case is reported to the network management tool, where the preparation of the repair can be done remotely. A variety of loops are implemented to support this remote diagnostic as comfortable as possible. An automatic revertive behaviour STM-1 of the loops protects against STM-1 remote operation faults.

Loops for fault diagnostics

The integrated network management concept offers flexible configuration of all parameters. To get remote access to the equipment and to connect the radio system to the used network management tool, the standardised embedded communication channel (DCCr) is used. It offers a 192 kbit/s channel and is transported in the SDH signal. Optional the second data communication channel (DCCm) is supported. The use of these standardised channels ensure an easy plugand-play solution together with all involved network elements as e.g. SDH multiplexers. No additional cables are required to connect the system to the network management tool. Communication channel redundancy is achieved by the implemented multiprotocol routers for the virtual network management connection which supports OSI- and TCP/IProuting. ment tool after power on or in case of a connection loss using the shortest possible path. This lead to a easy self-healing network management solution with a maximum of redundancy. The communication to the network management is package oriented and with the routing protocol TCP/IP it is possible to integrate external SNMP managed equipment to the network management tool using the same virtual channels. No additional fixed lines and no external routers are required to manage this equipment. The picture above shows other ways for easy operation and maintenance using TCP/IP routing. Whether local or remote access with the local maintenance terminal (LMT) over RS-232, WAN or modem is required or maybe a redundant network management tool should be used. There are plenty of possibilities to integrate and manage the whole network. Even different SDH subnetworks can be connected over an existing LAN/MAN/WAN connection to manage it as one network. If this network gets too complex, it can be divided in different islands which can be operated from different regions as parts and from a central station as a whole. This universal philosophy reduces space, cost and complexity enormously and makes it very easy to operate a growing network. The standardised STM-1 baseband interface enables electrical or optical interfacing to other systems. The new connector type (LC) or the optical interface offers a new dimension of insertion loss (<0.1 dB) and a outstanding return loss (>55dB) which allows long fibre length. The high-performance connector is easily and rapidly field installable and permits the use of single-mode and multimode fibres. If the optical module is in use, monitoring of the STM-1 signal over the electrical STM-1 interface is possible. The upgrade from an unprotected 1+0 to an protected 1+1 system is done by adding a second indoor and outdoor unit. The switching is done with the integrated protection unit which offers a highly reliable system. Optional plug in modules are available to build up a comfortable orderwire network. With this additional module a complete and cost effective private telecommunication network can be build up. Up to 1000 configurable numbers are supported. A number of 3 digits addresses a connection to a normal telephone (PHONE) or a private automatic branch exchange (PABX). To conPABX nect different private telecommunication subnetworks, the extension interface (EXTEOW) can be used. Two additional 64 kbit/s interfaces are available for further extensions. Protected STM-4 transmission

The DPU STM-4 system component, which is connected to the STM-1 microwave radio units, permits the transport of STM-4 data streams via a Regenerator Section in the SDH network. This application meets all the criteria for use within STM-4 trunk networks and STM-4 ring networks. All logic and operational functions are implemented in a single Data Processing Unit DPU STM-4 integrated chip. Four STM-1 microwave radio systems are required to transmit one STM-4 data stream. An integrated protection switching Features: unit permits these systems to be protected Easy migration from STM-1 to in a hitless and error-free way. In such a configuration, up to two further STM-1 STM-4 without link reengineering channels can be used for protection Protection-mechanism up to 4+2 Full integrated in network man- switching. This increases the quality and availability of the STM-4 signal with high agement bandwidth efficiency. A separate procedure permits the efficient transmission of partially occupied STM-4 data streams. Only the STM-1 frames occupied within the STM-4 signal are transmitted by means of the corresponding number of STM-1 microwave radio systems. Unoccupied STM-1 signals are replaced in the STM-4 signal by an Unequipped Signal.

For this application, the protection switching system can also be operated in n+1 and n+2 or configurations. Using the DPU-STM-4 enables the operator to migrate from STM-1 to STM-4 without link reengineering and traffic interruption.

Antennas
Antennas are key elements in radio systems. For this reason, Marconi does not rely on suppliers in this sector, but develops and manufactures its own complete, modular antenna range for a wide variety of applications and for optimum dimensioning and design of radio transmission systems. The product range for short-haul SDH microwave radio systems includes high system gain parabolic and lense antennas in all the sup-

ported frequency bands (18 to 38 GHz) and in a variety of performance classes (standard and ultra-high-performance). The ultra-highperformance antennas are optimised for maximum frequency re-use in dense urban areas offering an excellent front-to-back ratio. Depending to the application, the antenna can be minimised in size (0.15 to 2 m) which reduce the infrastructure cost to an minimum and allows smart installations.

Crossed polarisation are supported in all frequency ranges for even more efficient use of the frequency spectrum by using dual polarised feeders instead of single polarised.
