Hello, today I will be talking about Star Poets Journal, the Book Fair, and Fall Fair. Star Poets Journal is sponsored by Starbucks Coffee.The girls entering Star Poets Journal poets are: Elizabeth Matallana, Lily Edwards,Maryn Kristof, Sophia Ronska,myself,Amelie Avina,Savannah Morrow,Ginger Morris,Lindsey Rogers,Sela Goto,Kaylee Bartram. Lets hope all of them get in! The Book Fair was a big success!We made about $800 selling book ware.Some of the new books donated to Upper School library from Book Fair are:The Strange Case of Origami Yoda,Cracker, Chocolate Touch, and 13 Gifts.Thank you to all the families who donated!Everyone got atleast one thing from the Book Fair. We have Fall Fair every year during the fall. This year at Fall Fair we had a fishing booth, a hair spray booth, and a petting zoo. The fishing booth was run by Ginger Morris and her mother, Renee Morris. The hair spraying booth was run by Claire Edwards and Kaylee Bartram. The petting zoo was run by the Gilbert family who provided a pony and chickens.

The Halloween Fashion Show
By Claire Edwards The Halloween fashion show was a huge hit at Huakailani. We had many great costumes. Lower School seemed to like the Storybook Character Theme, while Upper School enjoyed the Animal Theme. Upper, Upperschooler Kaylee Bartram said, The Halloween fashion show was weird. Kaylee dressed up as Big Bird from Sesame Street. Another student Savannah, thought it was fun. She was a cowgirl, another great costume! Ginger, 6th grade said, It was funny because there were a lot of princesses. Ginger was a jack-in-the-box, a very creative costume. Altogether I think everyone had a great time.

QUAIL TIP OF THE MONTH:

Make sure you DO NOT FEED your quail or any small bird any avocadoes. They can plug the bird noses so they can't breathe. This will cause them to die. You can feed them lettuce.

PARAKEETS
Parakeets love to y and unlike quails parakeets love to climb. Like all birds parakeets like to be with a bird friend. Some of the most common parakeets are Budgies. You can nd them in pet shops and they would love to go home with you.

How does a bee get to school? It takes the buzzzz. What do you get when you mix a bear and a skunck? Winne the pee-yew!!! What do cats drink on a hot afternoon? Miced tea! What dog loves to have his fur washed? A shampoodle. What do you get when you cross a kung fu master with a sheep? Lamb chops! Why did the turkey cross the road? The chicken was on strike. Robin:I thought you were going bear hunting?! Chris:I was,but I only made it to the highway. Robin:What happened? Chris:Well I saw a sign that said bear left.So I came home. Why did the turtle cross the road? To get the shell station.

Buttery Corner By Sela Goto

With their unique color and beauty, Monarch butteries are one pf the most elegant butteries in the world. Here at Huakailani School for Girls, we have released many butteries. Monarch butteries start as a tiny egg. Then when they hatch, they appear as a tiny caterpillar. Mother Monarch butteries lay their eggs on crown ower leaves. The reason why is because when they hatch they eat the leaf. Not many crown owers remain on Hawaii. People see the caterpillars eating the leaves and use peticides. They don't know that it kills caterpillars. Sometimes when a bird sees a buttery or caterpillar it will eat it. When it eats a Monarch, it tastes horrible. Once a bird eats one, it knows not to eat an orange and black buttery again. The birds in Hawaii eat them even though they taste bad becuase there is a lack of insects to eat due to over use of pesticides. When a monarch caterpillar is grown up and ready to turn into a buttery it forms "J" shape. Before a caterpillar makes a "J", it attaches itself to something with a silk thread. Then it makes a chrysalis. After that process, it takes about one week to turn into a buttery. Here is an example of the lifecycle of the buttery.

Now you know all about Monarch Butteries. Remember if you have a Crown Flower in your yard: DO NOT SPRAY IT WITH PESTICIDES!

Plant Your Butts Here is a campaign that helps decrease the amount of cigarette butts in our environment. Students at Huakailani paint pots and put them in front of businesses that want them. Recently, students have added scoopers so the business employees or owners can clean them out. Last year a 4th grader in the upper school published a letter to Kaneohe Ranch asking if they would help us with the project. The director of the school met a lady who is going to make this project to become national.
