~ IN THE GALLERIES ~ Reavis Gallery Dedication

On Sunday October 2 the main gallery at the Depot was dedicated and named in honor of longtime members Johnsie and Johnny Reavis and daughter Jewel Reavis. President Bernice Chappell and Vice President Camiel Bradshaw made the presentation at the Gateways to the South reception. Since SASI acquired the depot in 2002, the Reavis family has been instrumental in overseeing and doing the renovations, getting grants, and keeping the building open. Johnsie said this has truly been a labor of love and an honor for us to give back to the community. Johnsie is Charter Member of SASI and has been treasurer since the group was founded in 1984. Jewel was the first Program Chair, and both have been very active throughout the years. Johnny was enlisted to help when the renovations began and he has been a constant presence helping with building maintenance and attending various events.

~ Art For Christmas ~

Southern Arts Society (SASI) has turned the entire depot into a shoppers dream for unique local handmade objects. Art for Christmas offers an eclectic mix of fine art and heirloom quality crafts for purchase. SASI members have worked all year to bring you their best work for the holiday shopping season. One of those works of art is their 2012 Calendar, which the members print by hand each year. The theme for the 2012 calendar is Aesops Fables. Each month illustrates a different story from the classic tales. The calendar sale is the main fundraiser for Southern Arts Society, supporting their art programs at the depot and giving college scholarships to local Cleveland County students. Throughout the depot, youll find a variety of artful objects from hand woven rugs and carved walking sticks, to paintings and hand thrown pottery. Skillful hands have worked magic from start to finish with original and artful designs that you will not find in any department store. When you drink your morning coffee out of a handmade mug, and check the date on the hand printed calendar, you will remember the artists and know that you are supporting the local economy. Giving a present that was made by a true artisans hand is a most personal and thoughtful gift. Art for Christmas runs through Dec 31.

The Spinning Yarns at Gaston Co. Museum

Spindles - detail

Shirley and Renee in 2008

The Spinning Yarns: Textile Stories in Painting created by sisters Shirley Calhoun Williams (deceased) and Renee Calhoun Matthews, began while researching their family history after the passing of their father. They decided to preserve the childhood memories they shared as a textile workers daughter and to honor all textile workers in our area. Their mother, who began working in the cotton mills at
the age of fourteen and continued working for nearly fifty years, is represented in many of the pieces. Originally

shown in 2008 at Southern Arts Society, Spinning Yarns is on exhibit through January 15, 2012 at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History, 131 W. Main St., Dallas, NC. Hours: Tues-Fri 10am5pm, Sat 10am3pm.
