staying creatively active is crucial in coping with the disease. Carson and His Shaky Paws Grampa was conceived and written by Kirk Hall, a Colorado-based author diagnosed with PD in 2008. Halls approach was to keep the story as light as possible while using terminology that his young grandson could understand. When Carson asked why my hands shook, I just said that I have shaky paws. He seemed to accept that, at least for the time being, writes Hall. This is his first book in the Shaky Paws Grampa series. The public is invited to meet illustrator Alison Paolini at the Paradise Library (5922 Clark Road) on Thursday, December 8, from 4-5:30 pm. Additionally, she will appear at the Oroville Library (1820 Mitchell Avenue) on Tuesday, December 13, from 3-4:30 pm. Carson and His Shaky Paws Grampa will be available for purchase and autographing, and a portion of every book sale will be donated to Parkinsons research. Paolini will speak of her experiences illustrating the book and working in collaboration with fellow Parkinsons patient, Kirk Hall. For more information about events at the Butte County Library, visit us online at: www.buttecounty.net/bclibrary.

Avenue 9 Gallery, for its exhibition Chico Icons 2011: Living Chico, challenged artists to represent what large numbers of current and former Chicoans are likely to bring to mind when asked to name places, objects, events, activities, or people that contribute to our communal identity. We hope viewers will exclaim: Now thats Chico for you! Some thirty artists will exhibit art that ranges from revered icons such as Bidwell Mansion to unexpected subjects such as the brightly painted and intricately adorned bungalows that are dream homes to many Chicoans. BEC Looking for Chicken Owners

The Butte Environmental Council is looking for backyard chicken owners to provide eggs for dioxin testing. Name and address of owners will be kept strictly confidential, and a cash incentive of $25 will be given to participants. In 1987 there was a fire at the Koppers wood treatment facility in South Oroville. This led to the CA Dept. of Health Services/ Environmental Health Investigations Bureau testing eggs from backyard chickens for dioxin in 1988 and again in 1994. The dioxin was released when a chemical in use at the facility (pentachlorophenol, or PCP) burned; dioxin is also released when PCP is made. An advisory was sent out in 2000 informing residents of the elevated levels of dioxin in local eggs. The Butte Environmental Council has received a grant from The California Wellness Foundation to continue egg testing

around the Koppers area. We are looking for people or families raising free-range chickens within three mile of the Koppers site. Please call 891-6424 to have us come out and meet your chickens. BEC is a 35 year old non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment and people of Butte County.

BC Public Health Receives Safety Grant

Butte County Public Health Department (BCPH) has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. The Everyone Rides Safe occupant protection grant was awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and will aid in Butte County Public Healths ongoing effort to improve the safety of children traveling in vehicles. Traffic deaths from all causes declined in California by 11.9 percent, from 3,081 killed in 2009 to 2,715 in 2010. But traffic crashes remain the number one killer of children. Many of the tragedies to children could have been prevented if children were properly restrained in the right restraint for their age and size. We are on the right track as more parents become knowledgeable in safe and appropriate transportation of children. The grant will assist in efforts to further reduce the number of children killed and injured in traffic collisions. A child passenger safety (CPS) awareness campaign will be implemented to educate parents, caregivers and professionals working with families about best practices in use of child safety seats and boosters. Community car seat classes on proper direction and installation of child safety seats will be available in English, Spanish and Hmong to Butte County residents. Parents and caregivers can call Butte County Public Health 530-891-2873 to register for a class or visit the website at www.buttecounty.net/publichealth to view car seat class schedules. In addition, Butte County social workers will participate in CPS trainings to become more familiar with safely transporting children in their care. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) certified CPS Technician course will be conducted and further encourage agencies working with families to register staff to become certified CPS technicians. New technicians will gain valuable skills and knowledge in working with families that have child safety seat concerns. Education is a key component of the grant. Educating parents, caregivers and others involved in the transportation of children can help prevent a serious injury or fatality in the event of a motor vehicle crash. Community car seat classes, trainings, fitting station appointments and checkup events are meant to assist parents and guardians to ensure children in their care are safely and properly buckled in a child safety seat or booster seat. Butte County Public Health Nurse, Jean Ayers, and certified child passenger safety instructor, states, As parents, we will go to any length to protect our children from harm. When it comes to kids protection inside cars, it is important for parents to know how to correctly select, use and install an appropriate, federally approved child safety seat and to teach children to always buckle up to protect against the unthinkable. Children rely on parents and other caregivers to keep them safe, said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. Butte County has a long history of programs designed to keep kids safe in cars. This grant keeps that momentum going. Funding for this program is from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For further information contact Jean Ayers, Public Health Nurse at (530) 8912732, Fax (530) 891-2873 or e-mail: jayers@buttecounty.net

Moisten the tool to put the finishing touches on sculptures. * Touch-up hard-to-reach areas on freshly painted model airplanes and cars - or even dollhouses. Put a Sweet Spin on Holiday Celebrations
(Family Features) Its not Christmas until you unpack Santas sack of goodies. So, gather all the little elves in your neighborhood and have them join you in the workshop for some cheerful holiday crafts, sweet treats and festive party favors. Create a Delicious Holiday Centerpiece. When it comes to holiday centerpieces, all you need is a little imagination. Jars filled with holiday colored candy - like Wonka Cheery Chewy Spree - are an inexpensive alternative to fancy candlesticks and vases. Add a special touch to the jar by applying matching bows or ribbons. Build a Sweet Gingerbread Sleigh. This is a fantastic activity for crafty kids. Gingerbread houses are a tasty Christmas classic, but why not try putting a twist on the tradition by building a gingerbread sleigh or train instead? The kids will delight in playing Santas helpers when it comes time to decorate and load up the sleigh. Make it an impressive hostess gift - or centerpiece at your own party - by loading a few Wonka chocolate bars and bags of SweeTarts Merry Mix inside the sleigh. Make Your Own Holiday Stocking. Embrace your artistic talent with this fun project for the whole family. Personalize each stocking by writing names with fabric pens or paint, and adhere holiday shapes cut out from fabric. Make them especially memorable by hiding Nestl Crunch Paul Frank bars or a Wonka Fun Dip Fantastical Fun Book inside. Prepare Edible Ornaments. Fast, frugal and totally festive, edible dcor like a popcorn garland, has long been a family favorite. These homemade cookie ornament cups are fun to decorate, and are perfect for holiday cookie exchanges, too. divided 2 quart-size plastic food storage bags Red food coloring Mini pretzel twists, broken for ornament hook (24 hooks are needed) Frosty Wonka Nerds*, various holiday sprinkles, sugars and/or decorating gels 24 Nestl Jingles*, any flavor, unwrapped PREHEAT oven to 350 F. Grease 24 mini-muffin cups. Place one square of cookie dough into each cup. BAKE for 15 to 17 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely in pan(s) on wire rack. With tip of butter knife, remove cookie cups from muffin pan(s). SPOON half of frosting into plastic bag; seal. Stir food coloring into remaining frosting in container until desired color is reached. Fill other plastic bag with colored frosting; seal. Cut 1/2-inch from corner of each bag. Squeeze bags lightly to pipe frosting on top of each cookie cup to form rounded ornament shape. Decorate with Nerds, sprinkles, sugars and/or gels. Place Nestl Jingle on top of each. To adhere hook, use a small amount of icing. For more budget-friendly and family-fun recipes and activities, visit www.Meals.com or www. CelebrationCorner.com. *Frosty Wonka Nerds and Nestl Jingles are available mid-November through December. Great Giving Simplified

(NAPSI)To make your holiday gift giving easier, consider these tips and tricks from Amy Judt of TheGift.com: Think outside the box. A Sweet Christmas Tradition:

Building Gingerbread Houses

By Melissa Frasier (aka The Busy Mom)
One of my own familys favorite Christmas traditions has been the building and decorating of gingerbread houses. We started this tradition when my oldest son was about ve years old and have been making one every year since. The best part of the gingerbread house is the nished product, a cheery and whimsical house that looks great on the mantel. So where do you start? There are some basic choices you must make before getting started. Depending on the age of your children, you may decide to make it an easy year and buy a prepackaged kit at your local store. This is a great option for when your children are small, and your main goal is to just throw something together. The kit comes with the gingerbread pre-made; icing packets prepped and even some candies inside. It really is like building a house, erecting the walls rst and raising the roof. We have used this option when our baby was small, and I didnt have much energy to devote to baking! Another quick and easy choice is to use graham crackers instead of actual gingerbread. We have tried this option also, and it can be a little bit tricky. The graham crackers are sometimes brittle and may crack when you are trying to build with them. But it does work, and once you seal it up with the frosting, it holds quite nicely. There are many sites on the web that show how to build using graham crackers; you just need to Google it. I am still trying to decide if I am going to use this option this year or actually make the gingerbread! Interestingly enough, making gingerbread houses became popular in Germany after the Grimm fairytale of Hansel and Gretel in the 19th century. In Germany, some villages would reconstruct themselves out of gingerbread by having each person who lived there bring a replica of their home. Around New Years Day, they would celebrate the new year by eating the gingerbread homes. German settlers brought this tradition with them to America. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the record holder for the largest gingerbread house is held by Roger Pelcher in Bloomington, Minnesota. Back in 2006, he constructed the largest gingerbread house in the Mall of America in Minnesota. It measured 67 feet tall, was 1,496 square feet and took nine days to build. That is bigger than most homes that the average family lives in. He used 14,250 pounds of gingerbread, 4,750 pounds of icing, 1,800 Hersheys chocolate bars, and 100 pounds of Tootsie Rolls. Since you will be making your gingerbread house on a much smaller scale, let the kids pick out the fun embellishments. Check out your cupboards rst and see if you have any stale food items that you could use for decorating. Some good choices include old cereal (fruit loops, shredded wheat), stale marshmallows, pretzel sticks or old cookies. Once you take inventory at home, head out to the local dollar store and see what you can come up with. Some great looking items for your house include gum drops, M&Ms, dots, Red Hots, and of course, candy canes. Get creative, which is half the fun. The other half is eating the candy while you are decorating! Whatever you decide, you can keep your costs down on your creation, and still provide and fun holiday experience for your children. For my family, building gingerbread houses has become a sweet, Christmas tradition that brings fun to our holiday season every year. Maybe it will do the same for your family.
