kits and many other handmade items is being offered beginning Monday, December 12. The classes will be held on the second & fourth Mondays of each month from 1011:30 a.m. at the Senior Center. Two breast cancer survivors, Margaret Dakin and Sharon Hinton will be offering their expertise in teaching the classes. The Butte County Library is proud to welcome illustrator Alison Paolini to the Paradise and Oroville libraries in December to celebrate a newly illustrated book, Carson and His Shaky Paws Grampa, written by Kirk Hall. This heart-warming childrens story highlights the relationship between a grandfather with Parkinsons disease and his seven year-old grandson. The book was written with families in mind and helps shed light on the initial symptoms of Parkinsons disease, while addressing common questions and concerns that children may express. Alison Paolini has lived in Paradise for many years and has enjoyed a varied and creative life. She is a published illustrator and poet, and studied acting and set design in New York and fine art at CSU, Northridge. Paolini also taught Drawing on Your Imagination for eight years at the Paradise Art Center, and shows her work at local art galleries. Diagnosed with Parkinsons in 1999, Alison firmly believes that

staying creatively active is crucial in coping with the disease. Carson and His Shaky Paws Grampa was conceived and written by Kirk Hall, a Colorado-based author diagnosed with PD in 2008. Halls approach was to keep the story as light as possible while using terminology that his young grandson could understand. When Carson asked why my hands shook, I just said that I have shaky paws. He seemed to accept that, at least for the time being, writes Hall. This is his first book in the Shaky Paws Grampa series. The public is invited to meet illustrator Alison Paolini at the Paradise Library (5922 Clark Road) on Thursday, December 8, from 4-5:30 pm. Additionally, she will appear at the Oroville Library (1820 Mitchell Avenue) on Tuesday, December 13, from 3-4:30 pm. Carson and His Shaky Paws Grampa will be available for purchase and autographing, and a portion of every book sale will be donated to Parkinsons research. Paolini will speak of her experiences illustrating the book and working in collaboration with fellow Parkinsons patient, Kirk Hall. Avenue 9 Gallery, for its exhibition Chico Icons 2011: Living Chico, challenged artists to represent what large numbers of current and former Chicoans are likely to bring to mind when asked to name places, objects, events, activities, or people that contribute to our communal identity. We hope viewers will exclaim: Now thats Chico for you! Some thirty artists will exhibit art that ranges from revered icons such as Bidwell Mansion to unexpected subjects such as the brightly painted and intricately adorned bungalows that are dream homes to many Chicoans. Paintings and photographs of walnut orchards and valley oaks and the austere rocks of Upper Park will add
natural elements that are central to life in Chico. The exhibition will run from December 9 to January 14 with a Friday December 9 reception from 5 to 8pm. This yearly display of Chico treasures, now in its seventh year, has always been a huge crowd pleaser. Visitors love becoming art critics as they vote for a Peoples Choice award.
