Everyone enjoys looking at the beautiful greetings. Childrens Gifts Bring any gently used or new items to the narthex for area children to give as Christmas gifts by December 4. They may choose two free gifts at the Gladbrook Lions Soup Day December 10. Here We Come A-Caroling The all-church caroling will be Sunday, December 4. We will meet at Chapel at 2:30 pm and then divide into two caroling groups. We will end the night at Zenos Pizza. Committees include: Lori Odle: sign-up sheets and posters Darrel and Barbara Burt: make & distribute list of caroling order and times. Please contact Burts if you have suggestions of people who should be caroled to. Claire Handorf: boxed candies Sue Koster: get song sheets/ask youth to lead caroling Connie Appelgate: reserve Zenos about 6 pm Lions Soup Day and Childrens Gifts On Sat, Dec 10, the Gladbrook Lions invite you to their soup day starting at 11 am. Also, children, pre-K through sixth grade, may choose two gifts to give their loved ones for free. Wrapping is provided by area churches. Please put any gently used, or new, gifts for all ages in the narthex box by Sun, Dec 4. Thank you. Christmas Program & Dinner Theater The Volunteers are sponsoring an all-church outing to Cornerstone Church in Ames on Dec 10, for their Christmas program/dinner theater. Cantata Enjoy the Garwin and Chapel singers as they perform a cantata during our worship service on December 11. Live Nativity and Caroling The GMG Fellowship of Christian Athletes invites you to go caroling and view a live nativity on Sunday, December 11. Meet at the Garwin bandstand at 5 pm for caroling, and then enjoy the live nativity at 6 pm outside the Christian Church, weather permitting. There will be a soup supper at 6:30 pm with a free will donation. Christmas Program on Sun, Dec. 18, 5:00 pm Come to Chapels Christmas program on Sunday, December 18, at 5:00 pm. Rick Bessman's apple and candy bar distribution and the unwrapping of gifts will follow the program. Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve Chapel will have a candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 6 pm. The Allen Burt family will lead the Advent candlelighting. Thank you, Kathryn Burt, for volunteering to plan the service. Christmas Day at Chapel We will have 9:30 am Sunday School and 10:30 am worship on Christmas Day. Sue Koster is planning the worship service. Operation Christmas Child Thank you to all who donated items for Operation Christmas Child. Chapel collected about 35 shoeboxes full of school supplies, toys, hygiene items, etc. The boxes will be mailed worldwide to children in desperate situations. Operation Christmas Child will provide stories about Jesus in each box in the appropriate language. Also, a big thank you to the UMW for paying most of the $7/box shipping fee and to those who included shipping money.

2012 Calendar Please refer to the 2012 calendar hanging east of the narthex bulletin board for your assignments regarding head ushers, acolytes, music/flowers, nursery, childrens sermon, musicians, and other dates. Make sure you sign up to reserve the church for any special dates and then call Cimber Strayer to verify the date. Senior Citizens at Chapel Thirty-four seniors were treated to a countryside meal of beef stew, cranberry salad, rolls, and apple crisp on November 11, 2011, at Chapel Church at 11:30 pm. Dan Steen welcomed the guests, briefly talked about the significance of Veterans Day to his family, and then led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sue Koster read a Thanksgiving poem and gave the meal blessing. After the meal, Sue read a script about some necessary items from days gone by while Karen Handorf showed each item, including a washboard, corn peg, sadiron, double tree, curling iron, straightedge razor, hair clippers, churn, kerosene lamp, and corn dryer. The group enjoyed telling their own memories, and it was concluded that we are glad for more modern conveniences; however, we all agreed with Leona Osten who said she missed the sense of family today compared to the good old days. A Veterans Day poem was read, and we ended the fun afternoon by singing the national anthem. Thank you to the Chapel Volunteers who served the meal. Many seniors also attended the Veterans Day program at Westbrook at 2:00 pm that day. The next meeting will be Friday, December 9, at the Tree Lighting at the City Centre at 11:30 am.

Mission Committee Update Mission Corner The Mission Committee is preparing to send a group to Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize, Central America, in 2012. The group will be made up of high school students, college students, and adults and will leave Monday, July 30, and return on Tuesday, August 14. Two introductory meetings have been held, and the group will begin preparing in earnest for the trip at their next meeting on Sunday, December 11, following the worship service. Siera Richter and Summer Langenbau will give the lesson on Mennonite culture and beliefs at the December meeting. All mission team participants are to bring ideas for our team theme, Bible verse, and T-shirts to the December meeting. Sign language was introduced, and each team member is to practice fingerspelling his/her name. We are blessed to be able to serve our brothers and sisters in Belize. Local Mission Opportunity The Mission Committee is offering tours of Mid-Iowa Workshop in November and December. The next tour date is Tuesday, December 6. Please sign up on sheet on the bulletin board or contact LeAnn Fleming. Join us to see how our local mission giving is working in others lives. Mission Committee to Meet The Chapel Mission Committee will hold a meeting on Sunday, December 11, at 9:00 a.m. in the east Sunday School room off the Fellowship Hall. Mens Bible Study

The men have been studying The Hole in our Gospel by Richard Stearns, ending Nov 27 at Lynn Handorfs home. Plans for continuing a mens group in 2012 are under consideration, so please stay tuned for more information. The men have really enjoyed this study and the brotherhood of fellowship.

You are the official greeters - Greet guests/newcomers and make sure they are comfortable finding seats. Pass out bulletins to those already seated. Then, stand at door to hand out bulletins to those entering sanctuary. Also, give bulletins to those in overflow and those who enter sanctuary from overflow. Adjust fans, if needed. There is an automatic thermostat so you should not need to adjust. Ask two other people to stand at the side aisles to help gather the offering. Make sure speaker system is turned on - Open doors below secretarys door. Plug in power bar on the left. Cabinet must remain open while system is on. 2) 10:15-10:25 Check calendar for which grade lights candles. If children dont volunteer by 10:25, ask any two children. Help acolytes light their wicks (matches in secretarys desk or bring own) and send acolytes to front between 10:2010:25 am. Tell them to turn off wicks coming back (to represent Gods light staying here this hour). You may need to turn off fans when acolytes go down or wicks may go out. They should light candles before praise team gathers at least by 10:25 so they have a place to walk. Remind acolytes to return to narthex when last hymn starts. 3) During offering Count church attendance and write number on the wall calendar on the correct day. Include all children and adults in one number. 4) During last song Make sure acolytes extinguish candles. Tell them to keep wicks lit coming out. 5) After benediction Unplug speaker system and turn off fans. If possible, throw away bulletins in hymn racks and put 2-3 hymnals & one Bible in each hymn rack. 6) Communion is the first Sunday of each month Ask pastor how he wants communion served that day. Remind pastor to announce that everyone is welcome to participate in communion. Usually pastor asks people to hold cubed bread in middle and juice trays on each side. Ushers invite people to come up front, starting in overflow & then from back to front of sanctuary; people put empty juice cup in basket at each side of front ushers. Serve handicapped people after others in pews, then musician, then ushers & pastor last. 1)

UMW
The Chapel UMW officers for 2012 met Thursday, October 6, 2011, at 6:15 pm at the church. They planned the calendar, and Sue Koster will prepare the 2011 booklets. The regular meeting began at 7:00 pm. Marcia Wiese began the program by reading scripture from Matthew 14:14-22. Karen Collins introduced Patsy Rinz, who spoke about the Northwest Tama County Food Pantry. Patsy, from Gladbrook, coordinates the pantry for residents of the communities of Lincoln, Garwin, and Gladbrook. The Pantry is located in the basement of the Gladbrook United Methodist Church. Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) refers families to the Food Pantry. The Pantry assists people by providing food for two weeks, the usual amount of time it takes to get food stamp assistance. Energy/water bill monetary assistance is also available. Health problems and injuries, loss of employment, limited income, and cost of medications are frequent reasons families seek assistance at the Food Pantry. Identity of persons using the Food Pantry is confidential, and families must make an appointment to get a food box. Monetary donations are used to purchase food from the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo. Monetary donations are essentially multiplied by 10, as one dollar donated may buy 10 dollars of food at the Food Bank. Vouchers for fresh foods such as milk, bread, eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables are also issued for use at a grocery store. Personal care items, such as shampoo, toilet paper, and soaps are also available for families. Patsy shared her passion for her work with the Food Pantry. She goes beyond the work of merely handing out boxes of food by offering informal job counseling and food preparation guidance. The Food Pantry served 280 people in 2010. She urged us to consider who may continue the work of the NW Tama County Food Pantry when she retires. President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order at 7:55 p.m. Roll call was answered by 10 members and one guest, describing an event remembered from school days. Comments reinforced the fact that bullying has always been a part of school attendance. The secretarys minutes were approved as read. Correspondence included a thank you from Karen Collins for the Service in Mission recognition pin she received. There treasurers report was omitted, as Shirley Svendsen was with Jim, who was ill. There were no bills presented. Karen Handorf reported from the Cards Committee. Old Business: The Mission Education Event will be October 28-30, rather than 21-23 as previously announced. There was discussion on the current project for the Clothing Closet for Iowa Correctional Institution for women. It was agreed to postpone the project until January, as we are currently assisting with House of Compassion supplies and Operation Christmas Child. New Business: Current projects were discussed. Postage for individual boxes for Operation Christmas Child is suggested at $7 per box. Last year the UMW donated $210 toward postage for the project. Shoeboxes for the project are due November 20. Motion by Sue Koster, second by Karen Collins to donate $50 to the NW Tama County Food Pantry and $50 to the Emergency Food Box in Marshalltown. Motion carried. The next meeting will be November 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Shirley Svendsen and Claire Handorf will have the Thank Offering program. Roll call is, Tell something about a pet or animal. Karen Collins will give the Education and Interpretation report. Hostesses are Phyllis Mann and Sue Koster. The All-Church Harvest Home Dinner will be Sunday, November 20 following the worship service. Karen Handorf and Lois Groth will provide the decorations and the kitchen committee will be Carolyn Kloster, Cindy Krull, and Bev Worden.

Prayer requests were shared. Kathryn Burt closed with scripture and prayer. Lunch was a delicious apple cake served on tables decorated in the fall theme and was prepared by Jo Svendsen and Donna Lynch. Chapel UMW met Thursday, November 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Lois Groth opened the Thankoffering program with Psalm 100. The group sang the hymn, Now Thank We All Our God. An Operation Christmas Child video entitled, The Power of a Simple Gift, was shown. Since 1993, 85 million boxes have been distributed to children around the world, and over 10 million children have been discipled. The gospel message is included in each box in the childs native language, and children are invited to join The Greatest Journey, the discipling program. Each child that graduates from the discipleship program receives a New Testament during a graduation ceremony. Shirley Svendsen continued the program by reviewing how mission has been the main focus of UMW since the organizations formation. Thankoffering is observed in all fifty states and in 100 countries around the world. The first Thankoffering was collected 125 years ago and was recommended at 2 cents per week. Now over one million dollars is collected worldwide for Thankoffering projects. Lois closed the program with prayer. President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order at 2:07 p.m. Eleven members answered roll call by telling something about a pet or an animal. The secretarys minutes from the October meeting were read and approved. Correspondence included a thank you from the Marshalltown Food Box and an invitation to the Bishops Ingathering. A thank you was received from Myrene on Floyds behalf for cards, visits, and prayers and from Shirley for Jim. It is expected Jim will return home next week. Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurers report for September and October. Income included regular offering for the months of September and October, and expenses were for mission projects at the House of Compassion, Northwest Tama Country Food Pantry, and Marshalltown Food Box, as well as for the card/gift committee and for the 2012 UMW program booklets. There was discussion on a project for the month of November. Motion by Sue Koster, seconded by Jo Svendsen that UMW provide postage for 15 shoeboxes at $7.00 each for Operation Christmas Child, for a total of $105.00. Discussion followed. Motion carried. Karen Handorf reported for the Card committee. Old business: It was agreed upon to postpone our collection of items for the Clothing Closet at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women until 2012. Members with items may keep them until they are collected in 2012. The all-church Harvest Home meal will be November 20 following the worship service. Committees for the meal include: Decorations Karen Handorf and Lois Groth; Kitchen Carolyn Kloster, Cindy Krull, and Bev Worden. The church will be decorated for Christmas following the meal. The Mission Committee is offering tours of Mid-Iowa Workshop on November 17 and December 6. Sign up to attend or contact LeAnn Fleming if interested. New business: Sue Koster distributed the 2012 UMW booklets. Participation in the Bishops Ingathering was discussed, and no action was taken. Motion by Lois, second by Phyllis to send $50.00 toward our UMW pledge. Discussion followed and motion carried. Prayer requests were received. The group read the UMW Purpose aloud together, with President Kathryn asking us to consider how our UMW fulfills the Purpose. Kathryn closed the meeting with scripture James 1:2-4 and prayer. Vivian LeVier led devotions with The Young Dead Soldiers by Archibald MacLeish in honor of Veterans Day and closed with A Harvest of Gratitude by Percival Chubb. Roll call was answered by nine members, who brought their favorite holiday recipes to share. The minutes of the October meeting were read and approved. Carolyn Kloster was thanked for taking care of the minutes in October. Shirley Svendsen thanked the group for their cards, visits and other remembrances while Jim was in the hospital and nursing home. Treasurer Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurers report for October which was accepted and filed. Old Business: Carolyn and Vaugn Kloster checked all the flag pole and marker holes, and all are accessible. All available marker holes are now being used. We will need to decide how to handle additional names, when needed. New Business: A timed certificate is scheduled to roll over this month. Harriett Fleming moved, Connie Appelgate seconded that we add to it from the checking account and invest in a 15 month certificate. The motion passed. Connie will make reservations for our December luncheon meeting and will notify us of the location. Jo Svendsen moved, Phyllis Mann seconded that we give our usual Christmas donations with a few changes. The motion passed.

Committee Reports: Funomics this month is $.25 if you brought your holiday recipe, and $.50 if you didnt. Three cards have been sent. The flags will be flown on Friday, Veterans Day. The Remembrance committee reviewed their list. Election of Officers Nominations for officers were held with the following persons being nominated. Kathryn Burt President Phyllis Mann Vice President Shirley Svendsen Treasurer Carolyn Kloster Secretary Vivian moved, Shirley seconded that a unanimous ballot be cast for the slate of officers as nominated. The motion passed. Kathryn closed the meeting with a quote emphasizing that enthusiasm is an important part of success. Connie entertained with a Thanksgiving word jumble and a point game that tested our homemaking skills. Vivian served a fruit compote and sweet breads from a table decorated for Thanksgiving. Administrative Council Meeting on November 6, 2011 Mike Vint, chair of Administrative Council, called the meeting to order at 12:23 pm on November 6, 2011. Pastor Dean opened with prayer, and Mike thanked Kathryn Burt, Dee Burt, and Heidi Langenbau for preparing the lunch. Those present were Pastor Dean & Marvalyn Kelly, Mike & Cathy Vint, Cimber Strayer, Donald & Phyllis Mann, Heidi Langenbau, Kathryn Burt, Lori Odle, Jim & LeAnn Fleming, Leon Lamer, Sue Koster, Nancy Peshel, Rick Bessman, Vaugn & Carolyn Kloster, Dee Burt, Dan & Trish Steen, John & Cheri Richter, Larry & Janice Collins, and Darrel Burt. The minutes were approved as printed in the Chapel Chimes. Church treasurer Jim Fleming gave the treasurers report. Pastor Dean commented on the wonderful fall and had questions about the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. It was decided to have the Christmas Eve candlelight service at 6 pm with Kathryn Burt chairing the service. The multi-age childrens program will be Sunday, December 18, at 5 pm. Sunday School will be held on Christmas morning at 9:30 am with the Advent focus on the manger. The Christmas worship service will be held at 10:30 am as normal. The Council gave a suggestion to Allen Burt, nurturing chair, to have a Christmas carol sing that morning with devotions threaded in between carols. The cantata will be held Sunday, December 11, and will last about 35 minutes. Singers are from Garwin and Chapel. Pastor Dean said the cantata is the heart of what is going on that day. He will talk briefly during Sunday School instead of during the worship service. The cantata singers will arrive between 10:15-10:30. Sue Koster will provide bars and drink for them. Besides the cantata, we will have praise songs, Advent candlelighting, remembering National Childrens Day, offering, and prayer concerns. The Advent Journey will start November 27. Books will be handed out to adults November 13, and if able, they may pay for their books in the offering plate. We will meet similar to our Lenten study, as a large group in the Fellowship Hall to watch a video and then break into smaller groups for discussion. The Sunday School will pay for the children and youths Advent materials. Leon Lamer, trustee chair, said the only issue left from the storm is the security alarm. The following is a list of equipment updates: new microphone; new glass on altar; new glass, light, letter board and letters for outside display; new canister vacuum sweeper; new paved driveway in cemetery, and Cathy Vint and Cheri Richter have volunteered to take care of the inside plants. The following is a work list and equipment list that the trustees would like the congregation to help with: clean gutters; paint mens bathroom; paint wrought iron railing; paint southwest entry to church; remove tree stumps (Mike Vint may do); clean lights in Fellowship Hall (Allen Burt may do); fertilize grass around church; paint basement; new light in overflow room; paint hallway by upstairs nursery; stencil meaningful sayings in classroom and Fellowship Hall; help install snow fence; and new floor covering and paint on stairs from overflow room and in downstairs nursery. We will not do our annual major cleaning activities like last year, but everyone is encouraged to work together to complete the above projects. The trustees will be meeting to discuss the following issues: security system; floor in Fellowship Hall; more trees on west side; and remove speaker on back of church. Ron Kosters have volunteered to do snow removal again. Thank you, everyone, for your hard work. Dan Steen moved to accept the trustees recommendation not to turn around the sanctuary because of cost and other factors. Cimber Strayer seconded, and motion carried. Dee Burt, YF counselor, reported that the hayride was well attended. Allen and she are leading a Bible Study for the youth on Wednesday nights and would like to encourage students in grades 7-12 to attend. The YF leaders are recommending to the PPR committee to consider investing in our youth by hiring a summer youth intern, especially after todays Children and Youth Sunday. Cimber Strayer thanked those who were responsible for todays youth activities. Youth are encouraged to attend Sunday School at 9:30 am as the teachers regularly prepare lessons of interest. We are all encouraged to evangelize to our youth as there are many negative influences in the world. Reports were given by Rick Bessman, Sunday School treasurer; Heidi Langenbau, Junior Sunday School superintendent; Janice Collins, Childrens Church leader; and Allen Burt, nurturing chair via Dee. Cathy Vint, witness chair, summarized the womens and mens Bible Studies that will be done in November; however, they may continue in January. Dan Beane, missions chair, listed four focus areas: 1) House of Compassion supply project which was a big success; 2) the Belize mission trip which will be July 30-August 14, 2012, with nine people committed to going and six thinking about it; 3) Mission Minutes are presented every second Sunday; and 4) Mid-Iowa Workshop is offering tours; please sign up on the bulletin board. There was discussion regarding the length of the worship service, and all felt that it was fine for the service to go past 10:30 am. Some wanted to remove the clock, but it was decided to leave it. Cimber Strayer reported that most conference forms have been returned to her. Sue Koster moved to accept the charge conference forms as presented. Lori Odle seconded, and motion carried. Charge Conference will be Sunday, November 20, at 4 pm at the Gladbrook UM Church, following our Harvest Home potluck and Hanging of the Greens. The next meeting will be Sunday, January 15, after church with Heidi Langenbau, Janice Collins, and Carol Lamer providing the lunch. The 2012 committees will start on January 1 and should send their chair names to Cimber Strayer. These chairpersons will attend the Ad Council meeting representing their respective committees so that Ad Council officers can be voted upon.
