Mini Project Synopsis

AppIication of RF ID TechnoIogy in ToII booth Ticketing

Introduction

# is only one of numerous technologies grouped under the term Automatic dentification
(Auto such as bar code magnetic inks optical character recognition voice recognition touch
memory smart cards biometrics etc. Auto technologies are a new way of controlling
information and material flow especially suitable for large production networks.

The # technology is a means of gathering data about a certain item without the need of
touching or seeing the data carrier through the use of inductive coupling or electromagnetic
waves. The data carrier is a microchip attached to an antenna (together called transponder or
tag the latter enabling the chip to transmit information to a reader (or transceiver within a given
range which can forward the information to a host compute

r. Current and proposed uses of # span a wide spectrum of application areas the
nature of a given use of # can be put in either one of three groups:

tem instance or item class identification

Location identification

ata transfer from or to the # tag

One of the major applications of # is in the field of transportation # has been

used for ticketing toll collection Automatic Vehicle location smart keys etc.

bjective/Aim:

The main objective of this project is to implement automatic identification procedure in the toll booth
systems using the # chip.Toll systems using # technology to facilitate electronic toll collection
can be widely used in highways and car parking faacility. The # toll system enables vehicles to
check-in and check-out automatically under a fast contactless secure and convenient environment.
However cars must be queuing up and pass through the toll system gate one by one . Nonetheless
# based automatic toll systems relieve the traffic jam problem caused by the long queue in
human manned toll station.

TechnicaI detaiIs and peration:

#adio requency dentification system is an automated system in which data can be retrieved
remotely using devices like # tags or transponders. The implementation of toll booth system
using # needs components like # tags readers Micro-controller LC display database
server and others. The # used here is the passive # and the microcontroller may be
8051-AT89C51.or serial communications Max232 C s used.

Low frequency # work at 125 KHz frequency with radio waves. There is a coil inside
the # tag and when it is influenced by a magnetic field it sends a 12 byte identity
code to # reader for further processing.

The # tag is used as a unique identity for account of a particular user. When a vehicle drives
through the toll plaza its driver is prompted to scan his # tag. f the identity (serial number of
the tag i.e. 12 byte data is matched with the one already stored in the system the toll amount is
deducted from his account. After this the vehicle gets immediate access to drive through.

This # based toll system also has some additional features. A new user can register him with
the system. Also an old user can recharge his account balance. The amount for recharge can be
e ntered in the system through a numeric keypad interfaced with AT89C51.

n beginning the user is prompted to scan his tag or . The serial code of the tag is identified by the
reader module and is sent to AT89C51 for comparison with stored data. f the is matched by the
microcontroller the toll amount is deducted from user's balance and user gets to drive through the
plaza. On the contrary if the tag is not identified a message ('Wrong ' is displayed on LC screen.

When an # tag comes in this range the reader detects it and sends a unique code of the tag
serially. This serial code consisting of 12 bytes is received by the microcontroller. This code is
the for the user and is stored as an array in the microcontroller. f the is matched with this
code stored in array of microcontroller the user is granted access though the toll plaza.

enefits:

Smooth traffic flow at toll gates

Convenient toll collection without handling cash

#eduction of management costs

Convenient and quick service to the vehicle owner
