Introduction

All praise belongs to Allah the Rabb of All existence, to His virtues and good treatment;
He commanded (us) to have patience and has exalted the Sabireen [i.e. those who are
patient], promising them an enormous reward.
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped (by right) except Allah alone
who has no partners and Allah is the best all-Knower.
And I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah's servant and messenger, may the prayers
and complete salutations be upon him, his family and companions.
As for what follows:
O' servants of Allah, Fear Allah in all of you circumstances and be patience upon
what has been granted to you. For verily the individual in this Dunya' is tested by way of
good and evil; for that reason he is in need of Sabr "i.e. patience" to surmount trying
situations.
Indeed there comes the mentioning of Sabr throughout the Qur'an in ninety places, it is
half of Emaan "i.e. Faith". Thus, Emaan is of two parts, one half being Sabr and the
other half being Shukr [i.e. gratitude].
As-Sabr by definition restraining the self and it is of three types:
Having patience upon obeying Allah.
Having patience from disobeying Allah.
Having patience upon the decree of Allah that is distressful.

Patience upon obeying Allah

As for the first, it is being patience upon obeying Allah, because from which there is no
doubt in it that regarding obedience (to Allah) in it is difficulty.

For within the prayer brings fatigue to the body and deprives the body of sleep. Within
the Sawm "Fasting" is a hardship of hunger and thirst, impeding the soul from
partaking of his whims (desires). In Sadaqah "charity" spending the wealth that is
beloved to the soul. In Jihad "Religious striving" is to be subjected to killing and
injuries and these are difficulties not to blame the soul's desire of, because the soul is
inclined to ease/comfort and to be stingy with the wealth, desiring to live and remain
(so).

And Shaytan tries to make the soul become disappointed and lazy, thus the soul is in
need of being patient which the soul is able, with patience, to be firm upon obedience
[to Allah], bearing the hardships similar to what the soul is in need of Emaan which the
souls reacheswith Emaanto a good ending due to obedience.

So Emaan makes it easy upon the soul to bear the difficulties being content with having
a good ending. And sometimes Emaan conditions [the soul] to be obedient after that
and Emaan comes to close terms with the soul and brings pleasure to him otherwise he
won't be able to abstain from his soul's desires.

Three forms of having patience upon
obeying Allah

After that, he will be the first to shun away from his soul's desires; he is in need of
having patience upon the soul. As-Sabr upon obeying Allah divides into three categories:

Having patience before performing obedience, by definition it is patience towards
having a sincere intention for Allah, abandoning showing-off within one's
intention.

Having patience while performing the act of obedience, that he should perform
obedience in a legislative manner with its pillars, obligations and traditions [i.e.
prophetic sunnah] in such a manner that he is certain of the act of obedience not
diminishing anything from its rulings [of obedience].

Having patience in the aftermath of performing obedience. In that he should be
patience upon hiding that act of obedience, lacking to spread that act wanting to
be seen (of people) and heard of; staying away from following up the act with
what will nullify it; similarly to following Sadaqah with reminded favor (upon the
person) and insults.

Patience from disobeying Allah

As for having patience from disobeying Allah, thus from what is well-known is that the
soul is inclined to evil except what Rabb [i.e. the Lord, Allah] has shown mercy upon.
The soul is inclined towards partaking in the desires of the soul even if it will cause the
soul harm and resulting in an evil end.

Shaytan makes disobedience fair-seeming to the soul. So if the individual doesn't take
grab of his desires under the supervision of patience then his desires will bolt him into
the realm of unlawful deeds, and by that time it will be difficult upon him to withdrawal
from unlawful deeds.

So he should refrain from being disobedient in the beginningeven if there is difficulty
in itit is easier to withdrawal from the unlawful after indulging freely in it and
abstaining from it after because the circumstances of the desires have diminished.
Therefore from that which will aid him upon having patience from disobeying (Allah)
are two things:

Firstly, looking into the outcome and wicked end, then indeed having patience
from worldly enjoyment is easier than falling into an intensely hot hellfire. So
when the person who has a sound intellect couples the enjoyment of this fading
life and with the ruin and pain/sorrow of the eternal hereafterthen indeed he
can reach the distinction in which will carry him towards abstaining from
disobedience.

Secondly, Al-Haya' [i.e. shyness/timidity] before Allah which had created him
upon, gave him blessing to and prohibited him from disobeying Him. So how
can he expose with his actions of what Allah had banned him from while at the
same time Allah is constantly watching over him in all circumstances and all of
his actions. Thus, when the servant has prepared for that he will be able to refrain
from disobedience out of shyness/timidity before Allah.

Similar to what Allah says:

_ _
_ _ _ _
" "" "But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his
soul from lust, Lo! The Garden will be his home. soul from lust, Lo! The Garden will be his home. soul from lust, Lo! The Garden will be his home. soul from lust, Lo! The Garden will be his home." "" "

{An-Naazi'at verses 40-41}

Furthermore, if the servant was to analyze the circumstances of the disobedient ones in
the Dunya' and what is for them, in the Dunya', of humiliation and declining of the soul
and thinking, the people looking at the disobedient with disdain. For indeed this will
suffice him in knowing the consequences will impede him from falling into
disobedience.

Patience on the decree of Allah that is
distressful

Thirdly from the modes of Sabr, then it is having patience upon the decree of Allah that
is distressful in what happens to the servant from the calamities and by definition it is
restraining the soul from becoming restless/impatient, refraining the tongue from
complaining, wailing and mourning; refraining the body from unlawful actions like
striking the side of the face, tearing the clothes and making supplication of the Pre-
Islamic Era [i.e. all these occurrences are from one who mourns the deceased].

And having patience upon the calamity that happens suddenly is similar to what the
prophet said:

"Patience is with the first blow."

And Allah says:

_ > _
_ . _
. : _ __
__

" "" "And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of
wealth and lives and crops; but give wealth and lives and crops; but give wealth and lives and crops; but give wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast, Who say , glad tidings to the steadfast, Who say , glad tidings to the steadfast, Who say , glad tidings to the steadfast, Who say ,

are returning. are returning. are returning. are returning." "" "
{Al-Baqarah verses 155 & 156}

Therefore it is a duty placed upon the believer to be patient upon whatever befalls him
and whatever patience has been made easy upon him towards those affairs. From those
affairs is the person's (level) of faith regarding the Qada' and Qadr of Allahthat
whatever has befallen him did not happen due a sin and whatever charge (of an offense)
did not happen due to calamity upon him, Allah says:

_ .
_ _ :

" "" "Naught of disaster befalls in the earth or in yourselves; Naught of disaster befalls in the earth or in yourselves; Naught of disaster befalls in the earth or in yourselves; Naught of disaster befalls in the earth or in yourselves; but it is in a Book but it is in a Book but it is in a Book but it is in a Book
before We bring it into being before We bring it into being before We bring it into being before We bring it into being. .. . Lo! Lo! Lo! Lo! That is easy for Allah That is easy for Allah That is easy for Allah That is easy for Allah" "" "

{Al-Hadeed verse 22}

And from those affairs the person's desire regarding the good reward and good ending
that is with Allah. For Allah had indeed promised the Sabireen upon their calamities on
enormous reward, Thus Allah says:

_ .

{Al-Baqarah verses 155-157}

And the prophet said:

"Verily the greatest reward is accompanied by the greatest trial"

And from the matters in which you should be incumbent towards is having patience
upon the calamity, waiting for the ease that comes with the removal of it. Allah says:

_ _ _ _
"But "But "But "But lo! With hardship comes ease, Lo! With hardship comes ease." lo! With hardship comes ease, Lo! With hardship comes ease." lo! With hardship comes ease, Lo! With hardship comes ease." lo! With hardship comes ease, Lo! With hardship comes ease."

{Al Sharh verses 5 and 6}

And the prophet said:

"And know!! That Nasr (aid) is accompanied by having Sabr
(patience), and Farj (happiness) is accompanied by Karb
(sorrow) and hardship is accompanied by ease."
{al Hakim volume 3 pg 542}

And from that which aid is sought in it towards having patience upon calamities is
remembering the blessing of Allah bestowed upon the servant. For indeed belongs to
Allah over the servant a multitude of blessings, more than from which misses the servant
regarding calamities.

Therefore when you were to contemplate in that regard, the calamity would become of
little importance to him while at the same time he would become aware of Allah's virtue
on him.

Similarly what befalls the servant of a calamity is that he knows what befalls him is
caused by his sin. Allah says:

__ : . e
_ : _
"Whatever of misfortune strikes you; it is what your right "Whatever of misfortune strikes you; it is what your right "Whatever of misfortune strikes you; it is what your right "Whatever of misfortune strikes you; it is what your right hands have hands have hands have hands have
earned. And He forgives much." earned. And He forgives much." earned. And He forgives much." earned. And He forgives much."

{Ash-Shura verse 30}

So when he remembers that Allah has placed a duty upon him to repent, fearing a
punishment much more severe (than of the Dunya'); for indeed the punishment
of the Dunya' is lesser than the punishment of the hereafter and in any case
patience is tremendously important and its virtue is major. Allah says:

: .
__

"But if ye persevere and ward off (evil), then that is "But if ye persevere and ward off (evil), then that is "But if ye persevere and ward off (evil), then that is "But if ye persevere and ward off (evil), then that is of the steadfast heart of of the steadfast heart of of the steadfast heart of of the steadfast heart of

{Az-Zumar verse 10}

Indeed Allah has enjoined upon us with this, exalts those who adhere to this quality,
giving them glad tidings, promising them that He will fulfill their reward without any
limit, promising them assistance and leadership in the religion.

Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said:

Conclusion

O' Allah make us among those when calamity befalls from the Sabireen and when
blessings come make us among Shakireen, O' Allah ameen [i.e. accept this supplication].

I say this is my statement and seek forgiveness from Allah for myself, for you and for all
the Muslims.
