Grade 9 English Language Plans September Week 1 Lesson 1 Topic: Reviewing Parts of Speech Objectives: 1.

. Identify nouns based on the way they are used in sentences. Procedure: 1. Students will say how they are able to determine that a word is a noun. 2. They will then create a list of the different types of nouns. Eg. Proper nouns etc. 3. They will then complete the activities on pp 1 and 2 of Grammar and Composition Workbook 3 4. Their responses will be reviewed and marked in class. NB. There were a few students who had the wrong number workbook, because they said it was not indicated on their booklist. Lesson 2 Topic: Reading Comprehension Objectives: 1. Read the comprehension passage in Unit 1 of English for Life 3 2. Discuss their impression of the various characters, and their interaction with each other. 3. Discuss the aims of the questions at each level of comprehension 4. Respond to questions from each level of comprehension Procedure: 1. Two students will be asked to read the comprehension passage entitled Milking a Goat by Naipaul. 2. They will then share their responses to Mr. Hinds, Vidiadhar, and Vidiadhars mother, referring to the passage for support. This discussion will also examine the relationships among the characters. 3. They will discuss what they would have done in similar circumstances. 4. They will be instructed on the levels of comprehension and from there will discuss the purpose of this aspect of the curriculum. 5. Referring to the text, students will view questions posed at the various levels of comprehension and discuss the quality of the response necessary at each level.

6. They will then write answers to two questions from each level. Their responses will be discussed. Lessons 3 & 4 Topic: Descriptive Writing Thing/Object Objectives: 1. Identify writing which is classified as descriptive 2. List the requirements of descriptive writing 3. Identify evidence of the requirements in descriptive pieces 4. Construct a descriptive paragraph using the writing process. Procedure: NB. Students were asked to take samples of writing, from newspapers etc, which they believed could be classified as descriptive writing, to class. 1. Students will review the elements necessary when writing for descriptive purposes. These will be listed on the board. 2. One student will be asked to read her sample out loud. The class will then identify evidence which indicates that the selected piece is indeed descriptive. They should be able to say how each enriches the description. 3. The students will then glue their examples in their note books and make similar notes about the elements of description evident. Home Work Take a snack for the next class. 4. Students will briefly review the steps of the writing process. 5. They will then go through the process of brainstorming, webbing, planning and drafting a paragraph about the snack which they took to class. Home Work 1. Rewrite the draft ensuring that there are no errors etc.

Week 2 Lesson 1 Topic: Reviewing Parts of Speech Objectives: 1. Identify parts of speech based on the way in which they are used in sentences.

Procedure: 1. Students will work individually to complete the activities on pp 15 & 16 of Grammar and Composition Workbook 3 2. Responses will be marked and reviewed for accuracy. Lesson 2 Topic: Reading Comprehension Objectives: 1. Discuss the passage in Unit 2 of English for Life 3 2. Use context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words 3. Write response to questions posed at the different levels of comprehension Procedure: 1. Students will share their memories of their first day at St Andrew High School. They will discuss their expectations of their new environment etc. 2. They will read the passage and determine if the narrators feelings reflect theirs on their first day at high school. They will also discuss the differences between their feelings and those of the narrator. 3. They will select the word with which they are unfamiliar. Using context clues they will discuss the possible meanings by seeing how well they work within the passage. 4. Students will them individually write responses to selected questions. Their responses will be reviewed and discussed in class.

Lesson 3 Topic: Descriptive Writing Objective: 1. Use rubric to evaluate the descriptive pieces produced by their peers 2. Rewrite based on the recommendations given by their peers Procedure: 1. Students will be asked to exchange their descriptive pieces 2. Each student will be provided with a rubric which will be used in their peer evaluation process. 3. After the evaluation, each student will review both their work and the recommendations given on the rubric. Using these recommendations as guides, they will rewrite their descriptive pieces before turning them in to the teacher for a final marking.

Home Work Brainstorm about the place which scares them the most. Lesson 4 Topic: Descriptive Writing - Place
