Charlotte Kennedy Miss Minnie & Sundra: Occupy Hou --- Who?

Mmm, I wonder what all those people doing over there this time of he morning? Sundra asked Miss Minnie. It was 7:30 on a Tuesday morning and they sat in a side seat in back of the 18 Kirby Dr. bus. She had ridden into downtown on the slower 79 West Little York and the other, more impatient Miss Minnie, had taken the faster 44 Acres Homes. Now, Minnie thought herself to always be in the know and so, answered Sundras question straight away. I think I saw something on television about them feeding the homeless over there. This early in the morning? Sundra said suspiciously. Then made the observation, Look like they spent the night. Well, if you homeless where else you gonna go, Sundra? I guess so. It just dont seem like I see hardly any food being passed around over there. Pardon me, I dont mean to butt in, but thats the Occupy Houston protest site. A young man decided to correct the women before they made any further foolish assumptions. After all, this very protest might affect the lives of these two in a positive way. Is that right. This was Sundra. She was more amiable at times than Miss Minnie. I thought they were just occupying Wall Street. They are, but a lot of cities across the United States and other places in the world are joining in the protest for more and better jobs, less taxes, and for the rich to pay their share, He felt real proud to be providing this information for the two women. So, did they sleep in the park? Yes, mam. Thats how they occupy it. Now, Miss Minnie was just sitting there trying to hold her piece. Lord, you know I dont want to get this little white boy told this morning. ---- I know. I know, he just trying to be helpful. Thats how he sees it from where he sitting, Lord. But, all Im hearing is a know-it-all talking down to me and Sundra. Miss Minnie often conversated with the Lord when she needed to say unpleasant things and free herself but, could not, so she just sat and fumed. So, you see the Occupy movement is going to . . . Look like to me they already have occupied most everything on the planet. She mumble but, she thought she was still thinking to herself. Aint they occupying third ward? Look over there they occupying 4th ward too! Sundra chimed in excitedly as the 18 whizzed down Allen Parkway past what remained of the projects. She thought Miss Minnie was taking part in the conversation with a third party. She wanted to encourage her since Minnie always seemed to clam up when strangers spoke to her. Girl I have even seen them in acres shakers. They both laugh because its always been that way.

Im tellin you the truth. Whatever they feel like occupying, they usually do. Africa. Iraq, Iran. The young mans smile is sagging somewhat. He feels the women have lost the content of the conversation and the movement. Now let a mass of us try and occupy something. Uhm uh. Say that, say that. You say you want to occupy something, mam? Miss Minnie is about to run down a scenario of what would happen if 100 black women, or less, were sitting and laying around that park back there instead of those other folks. But, she just looked at the young fella with her mouth open. Sundra looked at him in much the same way as if she did not know how he came to be sitting turned around in his seat looking back at them. Then she remembers. Miss Minnie remembers, too. They both had a good gut-busting laugh. It was gonna be a very good day.
