This document provides step-by-step instructions for manually installing, configuring, and troubleshooting the Netopia 4652-T Router. SDSL and IDSL configurations are included for both Static and PPP solutions. It is expected that Covad Field Service Technicians use the Covad CPE Wizard application whenever possible for CPE configurations. These should be used as a backup method when the CPE wizard is not available. Installing the Netopia Router

This section contains equipment information and instructions for connecting the Netopia router to your laptop.

Verifying the Equipment

Verify that the contents of the Netopia router box consist of the following equipment: One Netopia Router One AC power supply One DB-9 female to DB-9 female serial cable Two Ethernet 10BaseT straight-through cables

The DB-9 female to DB-9 female serial cable (shown in Figure 1) is used for connecting to the computer when configuring and troubleshooting the router.

Connecting the Router

The following instructions describe how to connect the laptop to the router. 1. 2. 3. 4. Start your computer Plug the DIN connector of the power cord into the Netopia router. Plug the AC power supply into a grounded outlet. Start a HyperTerminal session. For instructions, refer to the Starting a HyperTerminal Session chapter in the Field Service Guide.

Note: It is not necessary to start a HyperTerminal session if using the CPE Wizard to configure the router. 5. Plug one end of the DB-9 serial cable into the console port on the Netopia router and the other end of the serial cable into the serial port on the back of your computer. Refer to Figure 2 for port locations.

Turn on the Netopia router by pressing the power button on the front of the router. Press Ctrl-L. The HyperTerminal screen refreshes and the router prompts for a name. Enter admin as both the username and password. The Main Menu appears as shown in Figure 3.

Note: The Netopia 4652-T has a default username/password of admin/admin.

Configuring the Netopia 4652-T Router

This section contains instructions for manually configuring the Netopia 4652-T Router using the Easy Setup feature accessed through a HyperTerminal session. Instructions are provided for both SDSL and IDSL configuration.

SDSL Static IP Configuration

1. From the Main Menu use the up and down arrow keys to select Easy Setup and press Enter. The SDSL Line Configuration screen appears, as seen in Figure 4.

Set the Data Rate to the speed specified on the order. Change the Data Link Encapsulation to RFC1483. Change the RFC1483 Mode to Routed 1483. Use the arrow keys to highlight NEXT SCREEN and press Enter. The Connection Profile 1: Easy Setup Profile screen appears as seen in Figure 5.

Note: After changing a field, you must press Enter to exit the field or your change will not be captured.

Use the Tab key to toggle the Address Translation Enabled field to Yes or No as specified on the order. In the Local WAN IP Address field, enter the Client WAN IP Address from the order. In the Local WAN IP Mask field, enter the Client WAN Subnet Mask from the order. Use the arrow keys to highlight NEXT SCREEN and press Enter. The IP Easy Setup screen appears as shown in Figure 6.

In the Ethernet IP Address field, enter the Client LAN IP Address from the order. In the Ethernet Subnet Mask field, enter the Client LAN Subnet Mask from the order.

Enter the Primary and Secondary Domain Name Server addresses in the appropriate fields if specified on the order. These entries allow the router to provide DNS addresses to computers on the LAN obtaining IP addresses from the router. If not specified on the order, leave the default values of 0.0.0.0. In the Default IP Gateway field, enter the Customer WAN IP Address from the order. Toggle IP Address Serving On or Off as specified on the order. This enables or disables the router as a DHCP server providing IP addresses to computers on the LAN. If IP Address Serving is set to On, enter the number of IP addresses available to computers on the LAN in the Number of Client IP Addresses field. Also enter the first available IP address for the LAN in the 1st Client Address field. This step is required when configuring a routable LAN with IP Address Serving set to On. Use the arrow keys to highlight TO MAIN MENU and press Enter. The Main Menu appears. Proceed to the Setting the Security Password section.

SDSL PPP Configuration

1. From the Main Menu use the up and down arrow keys to select Easy Setup and press Enter. The SDSL Line Configuration screen appears, as seen in Figure 7.

Set the Data Rate to the speed specified on the order. Ensure the Data Link Encapsulation is set to PPP. Change the PPP Mode to LLC SNAP. Use the arrow keys to highlight NEXT SCREEN and press Enter. The Connection Profile 1: Easy Setup Profile screen appears as seen in Figure 8.

Use the Tab key to toggle the Network Address Translation field to Yes or No as specified on the order. Ensure IP Addressing is set to Numbered. Ensure the Local WAN IP Address and Mask are all zeros. This is required for the PPP configuration. Set the PPP Authentication field to CHAP. In the Send Host Name field, enter the PPP Username from the order. In the Send Secret field, enter the PPP Password from the order. The Password Confirmation window will pop up. Re-enter the PPP Password and press Enter. Use the arrow keys to highlight NEXT SCREEN and press Enter. The IP Easy Setup screen appears as shown in Figure 9.

IDSL Static IP Configuration

1. From the Main Menu use the up and down arrow keys to select Easy Setup and press Enter. The SDSL Line Configuration screen appears, as seen in Figure 10.

A message window appears advising it is necessary to reboot the router for the changes to take effect, as shown in Figure 12. Select CONTINUE and press Enter. The router will reboot.

Log back into the router using admin/admin as the name/password. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Easy Setup from the Main Menu, and press Enter. The IDSL Easy Setup screen appears, as seen in Figure 13.

No changes are required on this screen for a Static IP configuration. Use the arrow keys to highlight NEXT SCREEN and press Enter. The Connection Profile 1: Easy Setup Profile screen appears as seen in Figure 14.

In the Remote IP Address field, enter the Customer WAN IP Address from the order. Use the arrow keys to select ADD DLCI NOW and press Enter. Press Esc twice to return to the Main Menu. Proceed to the Setting the Security Password section.

IDSL PPP Configuration

1. From the Main Menu use the up and down arrow keys to select Easy Setup and press Enter. The SDSL Line Configuration screen appears, as seen in Figure 20.

Setting the Security Password

1. From the Main Menu use the up and down arrow keys to select System Configuration, as shown in Figure 27.

In the Name field, enter the password as listed in the CPE Password field on the order. Enter the same CPE Password in the Password field. The Password Confirmation window appears. Password Recovery
The following instructions describe how to reset the username/password on the Netopia 4652-T back to admin/admin. Previous Netopia models have used this procedure to reset the configuration back to factory defaults. 1. 2. Ensure the Netopia router is plugged in and powered on. Turn the router upside down, and locate the slot on the bottom of the router which is approximately the size of the end of a paper clip, as shown in Figure 31.

Insert the end of a standard metal paper clip into the slot until it makes contact with the circuit board inside the router. The paper clip completes an electrical circuit, and all lights on the router will illuminate. Remove the paper clip after the lights illuminate. You will now be able to log into the router using the default username/password of admin/admin. If you need to restore the factory default configuration in the router, proceed to the Restoring Factory Defaults section.

Restart System
1. 2. From the Main Menu, use the arrow keys to select Utilities and Diagnostics and press Enter. The Utilities and Diagnostics screen appears. Use the arrow keys to select Restart System and press Enter. A window appears to confirm you would like to restart the router, as shown in Figure 32. Select continue and press Enter. After a moment, the login prompt appears.

Changes that have been made during the router configuration will now be in effect. Verify the service is functioning properly to complete the router configuration.

Interpreting the CPE Light Status

The LEDs on the Netopia routers provide information about the current router status. Only the labeled LEDs will illuminate, as shown in Figure 33.

Restoring Factory Defaults

1. From the Main Menu, use the arrow keys to select Utilities and Diagnostics, as shown in Figure 34.

A window appears to confirm you would like to restart the router, as shown in Figure 36. Select continue and press Enter. After a moment, the login prompt appears.
