The Greenspace Insider

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED

February, 2002

Greenspace has put together two events for this spring that will surely pique your intellectual curiosity. The Board of Directors has asked me to invite you to the following special events that we have arranged for you to experience this spring. We think you will delight in the diversity of subjects we offer and be impressed with the knowledge to be shared. With that in mind, please consider joining us at one or both of the following informative and fun events.

Beyond Imagination a Journey to the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge

One of the wonderful things that occurs from time to time is establishing partnerships and associations with individuals and groups of people doing like-minded work. The multimedia show called Beyond Imagination by Cambrian, Walter Robie, and the professional relationship between Greenspace and the National Wildlife Federatons Conservation Program staff member, Myra Wilensky, bloomed when we agreed to promote the efforts of Mr. Robie. As a bonus, the North Coast Alliance joined the synergy resulting in the March 25, 2002 showing of Walter Robies odyssey into the Arctic Refuge. The 30 minute presentation of Beyond Imagination will be preceded by a 15 minute discussion of how Mr. Robies presentation came about. Myra Wilensky will discuss what the National Wildlife Federation has been doing to mobilize Democratic and Republican forces to prevent further intrusion into one of our nations last too wild to waste areas by energy exploitation corporations. It must be pointed out that 95% of the oil reserves on Alaskas north slope is open to exploration. The remaining 5% is simply too wild to waste when the potential of finding resources is minimal and the quantity of resources is inconsequential to our standard of living. The presentation will be on March 25th at 7:00 PM at the Cambria Vets Hall located at 1000 Main Street. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the Greenspace office. Proceeds will support the National Wildlife Federation, North Coast Alliance, and Greenspace missions.

A Cambria Walk in the Woods Volume 2, Version II

Last year, Greenspace and The Nature Conservancy, with the cooperation of the Covell family and the Monterey Pine Forest Ecological Cooperative, provided 8 tours on the Covells Cambria Pines by the Sea Ranch. The 1,500-acre Ranch is located directly behind Cambria and contains 800 acres of Monterey pine forest. The tours had a maximum of 20 people per walk and spaces on the walks filled to capacity within two weeks. We are delighted to present these tours again this Spring. Each tour will begin at 10:00 AM and end approximately at noon on the following dates: April 20th and 21 st, May 11 th, 12 th , 18 th , 19 th , 25 th and 26 th. As before, each walk will only have twenty people. We will have surprise experts on tree pathology, entomology, forest genetics, native grasses, and more on some of the tours. As always, there is no charge for these very special walks in the woods. Covells Cambria Pines by the Sea Ranch is not only covered with Monterey pine forest, there are also oak woodlands and riparian forest on the property. The Ranch includes three watersheds which are home to threatened and endangered species, including the tidewater goby and the California red-legged frog. There is already a waiting list of over 100 people for these tours. Because of the demand to attend these very special tours we urge you to call our office today to assure your space. These tours will fill to capacity rapidly, so do not delay in making your plans.
