Mary, Mother of God

When did Christians begin to see Mary as a figure we can ask to intervene with Christ on our behalf? The earliest written prayer to Mary comes to us from an Egyptian manuscript from the third or fourth century. Marian apparitions were common in the church of St. Gregory Nazianzen, a bishop of Constantinople who died in 390. He spoke in a sermon about the practice of prayer interaction with Mary to be strange or in need of a great deal of justification. By the Middle Ages, ordinary people came to feel close to Marys moments of joy and suffering and to admire her love and courage. This shift from emphasis on universal role in the drama of salvation to human struggles also encouraged people to feel close to her in a personal way. The following prayer from an Egyptian manuscript is the oldest prayer to Mary in existence. Pray it, and you will catch the feeling of what our running to Mary has been and is all about: We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Faith Formation
Do you have a child in 4th-8th grade? If so, give your child a chance to get involved with other Catholic youth in our parish! RSVP to any event your child plans to attend at cbarrett@standrewcatholic.com. Many of the events need volunteers for transportation. All volunteers must have a completed volunteer packet and drivers form on file with the Archdiocese.

Stewardship
Although religious faith is a strong force in the lives of many Americans, a dominant secular culture often contradicts our values. This culture in which destructive isms:

Materialism Relativism Hedonism Individualism Consumerism

exercise seductive, powerful influences. There is a strong tendency to privatize faith, to push it to the margins of society, confining it to peoples hearts, or, at best, their homes, while excluding it from the marketplace of ideas where policy is formed and men and women acquire their view of life and its meaning*. As Catholics, we must assert our values; charitably and consistently. This is the art form of stewardship.

OVERNIGHT SHELTER
St. Martin de Porres will once again feed the homeless at the cold weather shelters at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and Central Presbyterian on Monday, January 2nd. There are three ways to help: prepare food (we provide recipes), serve the food at the shelters (only requires about 3 hours, usually home between 8:30 & 9:00pm), stay overnight until 6:30am (safe atmosphere with private sleeping quarters). We have the most difficulty finding overnight volunteers, but it is really easy duty. We break the night up into watches, and since guests sleep between 9 pm and 5:30am, there is plenty of quiet time to catch up on reading, paperwork, etc. The more volunteers we have, the more sleep we get! We try to carpool from St. Andrew and leave by 5:15pm, or you can meet us downtown at the shelter. Eileen (Helena) Nelson will once again be coordinating the volunteers. Thanks Eileen!

Please e-mail StMartin@standrewcatholic.com for more information, or call the parish office.

Jane Smith will be heading up solicitation for the live auction and raffle items. She will be soliciting help from all the ministries. All money raised will be used to help our parish. We would love to have 100% participation from each ministry in prize donations and participation in the fun.
