INTRODUCTION

General Precautions
Power Source
Attach the CL-2500 SSP to an AC power source only of the type and voltage described in these operating instructions or as marked on the rear panel of the unit. touching the CL-2500 SSP faceplate controls, or use the remote control as much as possible if strong static conditions are present in your listening environment. Even unfelt static discharges can affect the CL-2500 SSPs internal microprocessors. If you suspect that static may have discharged to the faceplate, turn the CL-2500 SSP off, unplug its AC cord from the rear of the player or outlet, and allow to remain off and unplugged for one minute to completely clear and discharge. Re-plug the AC cord and turn the unit back on. Normal function should resume thereafter.

AC Cord Wall-End
The CL-2500 SSP is equipped with a polarized, 3-pin AC power plug that will fit into the AC outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, do not defeat the directional plug by breaking off its rounded ground pin. Instead, use a three-hole female to two-prong male adapter obtainable in any hardware or electronics store. Be sure to utilize the adapter plugs ground ring, and fasten it to the outlets cover plate attachment screw. The CL-2500 SSP is designed to be operated in a grounded state; that is, connected by its three-wire, three-prong AC cord to your households AC earth ground. Defeating this ground connection may impact performance and possibly render the allmetal unit more vulnerable to static discharge shock from the users hand. If the units connection to ground is defeated by necessity, i.e., grounded outlets are not present in household, requiring use of two-pin adapter or two-prong cord: TAKE CAUTION to discharge accumulated static from hand/body to some other inert metal object prior to

Non-Use Periods
When left unused for a long period of time, the unit should be disconnected from household AC. It is recommended that the CL-2500 SSP be plugged into a UL (or similar) compliant surge and spike protection device, preferably of high quality with separate isolated ground paths. CAUTION: Do not entrust the CL-2500 SSP nor any system components to protective devices when environmental conditions or public utility problems exist or are suspected. Occasionally, lightning, brownouts, and extreme spikes or surges can not only overwhelm your protective device, but can override a system components internal fusing and do serious damage. Use the rear panel switch to turn off your equipment when you are not present to monitor conditions. Please reference the conditions stipulated in the limited warranty policy.

CL-2500 SSP USERS GUIDE

Installation Conditions
Environment
The operating temperature range of the CL-2500 SSP is 41- 95 F (5-35 C). Operating humidity is 5% to 90% (no condensation). Do not operate the unit when ambient temperatures and/or humidity are outside of this range. Allow adequate air circulation (4 minimum surround) to prevent excess internal heat buildup. Keep the CL-2500 SSP apart from FM or cable TV coaxial antenna leads to minimize reception interference.

Precautions
Make all connections to and disconnections from the CL-2500 SSP with AC Power disconnected and all system components switched OFF. Commence installation with the CL-2500 SSPs AC cord disconnected and the unit removed from power, with all other system components turned off, until all interconnects are installed. Whenever the CL-2500 SSP is connected to AC power and the rear panel switch is ON, it is indeed live, and in Standby mode. Turning the Front Panel Power Switch ON or OFF toggles the SSP between ON and Standby.

Condensation
Moisture may form on the display lens due to temperature or humidity extremes, or as relates to following: Immediately after a heater has been turned on When the unit is moved from a cold environment into a warm one If placed too close in proximity to a heat source such as a radiator etc. If moisture forms inside the unit, it may not operate properly. To correct the problem, move the product away from the heat source, turn the units power on and allow approximately one hour for the moisture to evaporate before operating the unit.

Maintenance
Clean the CL-2500 SSP faceplate, control buttons and chassis only with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth (like a well-worn, oftwashed T-shirt), lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any abrasive pad, scouring powder nor solvent-containing spray cleaners, (especially anything including alcohol and benzine) on the player.

Placement
As the CL-2500 SSP is a critical processing component, it must be mounted on a stable, non-resonant and vibration-free surface and outside the dispersion paths and magnetic fields of your loudspeakers. DO NOT place the CL-2500 SSP directly atop any device that emits heat or vibration (i.e., transformers, amplifiers), nor in the path of direct sunlight.

CL-2500 SSP USERS GUIDE

Set Front Speakers

The SSP will always assume you have front left and right speakers; however, you will need to select the size of your speakers. Turn the Select Knob to set the Front Speakers to one of the following: SMALL For bookshelf speakers or small satellite speakers. This option places a filter in the path of the signals sent to your front speakers. This filter removes any low frequency content and reroutes it to the subwoofer, which is designed to handle low frequency signals. LARGE For floor standing speakers. This option causes the front speakers to receive the entire bandwidth of the signalboth the low notes and the high notes. You may want to experiment with the Small setting because it may result in an overall smoother bass response if you are also using a subwoofer. If you selected OFF for the subwoofer setting above, your front speakers will receive a wide bandwidth signal. Press Enter to continue.

Set Center Speakers

Turn the Select Knob to set Center Speaker Size to one of the following: NONE Use if you do not have a center channel loudspeaker. This reroutes the center channel signal to the left and right front speakers, resulting in a Phantom Center channel image between your front speakers. SMALL Use if you have a physically small loudspeaker designed to sit on top of your TV. As with the front channel speakers, selecting Small inserts a filter in

the center channel signal path and reroutes the bass to your subwoofer (or front channel speakers, whichever is best suited to handle such signals). LARGE Use if your center channel speaker is capable of handling bass frequencies and you want it to get a full range signal. Press Enter to continue.

Set Surround Speakers

Turn the Select Knob to set Surround Speaker Size to one of the following: NONE - If you do not have any rear channel speakers. SMALL - If you want to redirect the bass signals away from your small rear channel speakers. LARGE - If you want to send a wide bandwidth signal to the rear speakers. Press Enter to continue.

Set Dynamic Compression

You can compress the dynamic range of the playback signal for movies or music sources recorded in Dolby Digital format. The dynamic range is the level difference between the quietest and loudest parts of a movie. For example, you may wish to reduce the dynamic range if you are watching a movie with loud explosions or if you are in an apartment building. Compression also increases the level of very quiet passages, such as soft dialog when the master volume is set low. Turn the Select Knob to set Compression to one of the following:

22

CL-2500 SSP USERS GUIDE

NONE - Maintains full dynamic range. MEDIUM - Provides less compression than the High setting, but still limits the dynamic range HIGH - Provides maximum reduction of dynamic range. Note: The compression setting has no effect on signals from music CDs or DTS encoded materials. The incoming signal format is indicated by LEDs on the SSP Front Panel. Press Enter to continue.

23

Set Crossover Frequency

You can select the frequency at which signals are divided between the Subwoofer and any speakers set to SMALL. Turn the Select Knob to set the default Crossover Frequency to one of the following: 60-140HZ (10HZ increments) - For most speakers, a Crossover Frequency of 80 Hz, 90 Hz or 100 Hz will result in the best sound. For very, very small speakers higher settings will work best. NONE Crossover Frequency is turned off. Press Enter to continue.

Set Channel Delays

For optimum multichannel sound, all speaker signals should arrive at the listener simultaneously; however, this will only happen if the loudspeakers are the same distance from the listener. This is usually not practical given the location of furniture and walls in your listening room. To compensate, the CL-2500 SSP allows you to delay the signals from the center and rear speakers so they will not arrive before the signals from the front left and right speakers. Sound travels about 1 foot per millisecond, so if your center channel speaker is 5 feet closer to you than your front left speaker, it will arrive 5 milliseconds to soon. To compensate, you should set the center channel delay to 5 milliseconds. The quick rule of thumb: For every foot closer the center or rear speaker is, add 1 millisecond of delay.

24

CL-2500 SSP USERS GUIDE

The options for center channel delay are 0,1,2,3,4 or 5 milliseconds. The options for rear channel delay are 0,5,10,15 milliseconds. Select the option closest to the delay that will work best with your room/speaker setup: Set Center Delay Turn the Select Knob to set the Center Delay to 0-5 milliseconds (ms) in 1 ms increments, then press Enter. Set Left Rear Delay Turn the Select Knob to set the Left Rear Delay to 0-15 milliseconds (ms) in 5 ms increments, then press Enter. Set Right Rear Delay Turn the Select Knob to set the Right Rear Delay to 0-15 milliseconds (ms) in 5 ms increments, then press Enter.

Example:
Lets say when I measure the distance from my front right speaker to my favorite listening chair I get 10 feet, then I measure the distance from my center channel speaker to my listening chair and I get 7 feet. I will need 3 milliseconds of delay to compensate for the difference of 3 feet.

25

Using the Noise Generator (Test Tone)

To help you set channel level trims, the CL-2500 SSP is equipped with a Noise Generator, also known as test tone generator. The Noise Generator outputs a calibrated test signal to the front, center and rear channel speakers. Use the Noise Generator with a sound pressure level (SPL) meter for excellent channel balance settings and a more enveloping sound stage. Turn the Select Knob to set the Noise Generator to: OFF Disables the Noise Generator. ON Enables the Generator. Press Enter to continue.

Using the Noise Generator with a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) Meter
When the Noise Generator is enabled, each time you press the Enter button the SSP will advance to the next speaker and play the calibrated test signal. The Noise Generator is not available on the subwoofer output. Place the meter in the prime listening seat at about ear height pointed toward the TV. Start the Noise Generator for the left front channel and write down the reading. Then press the Enter button to move the test signal to the next channel and check the reading for the center channel speaker. Adjust the trim for the center channel so that the SPL meter reads the same value as it did for the left front speaker. Repeat this process for the right front and for both surround speakers. When measuring the surround channels, you may need to point the SPL meter at the speaker that is playing for a more accurate reading. Because the subwoofer level will be program material dependent, you will probably want to start with the nominal zero setting and adjust it after you have listened to both movies and music. You will probably find you want to customize the subwoofer level setting for each preset. In general, movies will have a subwoofer level about 10dB higher than the level needed for stereo music reproduction.

26

CL-2500 SSP USERS GUIDE

Set Channel (Trim) Levels

Sounds should accurately track the action on screen and originate from the proper locations in the sound field around the listener. But, if your rear loudspeakers are different from your front or center speakers, you may experience different levels of playback. In addition, the balance between the subwoofer and the five main speakers will be dramatically affected by the acoustics of your listening room and the placement of your speakers. To compensate for these differences, the CL-2500 SSP is equipped with level trims for each audio channel. We recommend that you use the built-in Noise Generator, a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, and critical listening to set these trims, and to ensure that all channels are equally loud. See the next section for details. Set Left Level Turn the Select Knob to set the Left Front Speaker Level to 12.5 to +12.5 dB in 0.5 dB increments. Press Enter to continue. Set Center Level Turn the Select Knob to set the Center Speaker Level to 12.5 to +12.5 dB in 0.5 dB increments. Press Enter to continue.
