Should I Use LUSE?

Pros Efficient use of LUN resources Fewer visible LUNs on front-end side Administration is done on storage side versus server sides Easier when using alternate links or HA configurations

Cons Using extended volumes on fast servers (V2xxx) can cause complex math to be done in two places (HP-UX for LVM and the XP Array for LUSE) Striping of LVM can give better performance

Secure Manager XP Overview

Secure Manager XP allows you to restrict a LUNs availability to a specified host or group of hosts in a SAN, using the hosts worldwide name (WWN). Other hosts cannot access the secured LUN and its data. Real-Time I/O level security or can prohibit access from a WWN to a Port:LUN by returning a not present status for the SCSI Inquiry command (depends on setting of system mode bit 111 on SVP). Secure Manager XP is enabled by a licensed key. Configuration can be done on SVP, Remote Console or with Command View XP. Secure Manager XP is supported only for Fibre Channel ports. LUN security can be changed without taking the port offline.

Steps to Define LUN Security

Using either Remote Control XP or Command View XP: Add WWN list for the port WWN/Nickname Create WWN groups (optional) Useful in cluster environments Create LUN groups (optional) Useful when several LUNS have a common access list Selectively grant access between WWN/WWN groups and LUN/LUN groups.

Logical Unit Size Extension

Logical Unit Size Extension (LUSE) is a built-in feature of LUN Configuration Manager XP. Use LUSE to combine multiple LDEVs into one unit. Use LUSE for situations where you need larger LUNs.

LUSE Guidelines
LDEVs combined must be the same size and emulation mode. LDEVs combined must be in the same control unit. LDEVs across different array groups may be combined. Up to 36 LDEVs can be combined into one larger LUN.

Which Load Balancing Policy Is Best?

The best policy is based on the processing environment, and that can change throughout the day Try these: For hit-intensive environments (for example, databases with lots of I/Os) try Shortest Queue Length For data-size intensive environments (for example, when in contention with backup) try Shortest Service Time Also, you might try scripting CLI commands to easily change policies at different times of day

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting should be more about failed paths than a failure of AutoPath Right after installation, perform tests to confirm that AutoPath is running correctly: Run the autopath display command Set no load balancing (None) and a preferred path Set all paths Degraded performance during peak utilization is likely to be the first direct sign to a user that a path has failed Run the autopath display command to make frequent inspections Look for any paths with a failed link status or for paths with no load balancing policy in place

Which Load Balance Policy Is Best?

The best policy is based on the processing environment, and that can change throughout the day First, check the Path Performance window (well discuss that in a few minutes) There are three shortest queue policies, which use instantaneous metrics Try these: For hit-intensive environments (for example, database with lots of I/Os) try Shortest_Queue_Requests For data-size intensive environments (for example, when in contention with backup) try Shortest_Queue_Bytes Also, you might try scripting CLI commands to easily change policies at different times of day

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting should be more about failed paths than a failure of AutoPath Right after installation, perform tests to be assured that AutoPath is running correctly: Run the autopath adapters and autopath devices commands Set no load balancing with a preferred path Set all paths Use the Path Performance window Degraded performance during peak utilization is likely to be the first direct sign to a user that a path has failed Use the Path Performance window Make frequent inspections of the log

H6773S F.00

258

2002 Hewlett-Packard Company

Windows Troubleshooting
Event Viewer
The viewer logs when a path is taken out of service, all disk and adapter errors, and I/O errors.

Windows Diagnostics
The Administrative Tools utility shows all devices connected to the system.

Windows Registry
Shows the devices connected to the Windows system. Use the Registry Editor to display the devices seen at boot time.

Disk Administrator
Shows the paths that are online and offline. If all the paths to a LUN appear to be offline, it is likely that the device is not preformatted at the disk array level. Preformat the device, and the Disk Administrator will see the path of the device and the remaining paths offline.
H6773S F.00 259 2002 Hewlett-Packard Company

Recovering from a Path Failure

Determine that a path has failed Diagnose and correct the failure Run Microsoft Disk Administrator or wait 60 seconds Display paths to be sure the path is active If a path was the preferred path, you must reset it manually on the Device Settings window

Configuring Services File

One port is required for each instance. Each port requires distinctive name and distinctive port number within that host. File locations: Unix: /etc/services Windows NT/2000: \winnt\system32\drivers\etc\services MPE-iX: SERVICES.NET.SYS Example:
Host: hst1
# File Transfer Protocol # Virtual Terminal Protocol # World Wide Web HTTP # horcm0 instance for HORC # horcm1 instance for SI

Creating A HORCM File - Steps

Create initial horcm file with the correct HORCM_MON & HORCM_CMD information. Comment off all other values. Start a RM instance (horcmstart.sh). Run raidscan with the correct port option argument and find the correct TID & LUN information to put in the HORCM_DEV section (example: raidscan -p CL2-G -CLI -fx). Fix the horcm.conf files one for each pair member. Create the HORCM_DEV & HORCM_INST sections. Stop & restart RM instance (horcmshutdown.sh & horcmstart.sh scripts) Run pairdisplay (pairdisplay c) to confirm correctness of the horcm file.

What Is Application Policy Manager?

A tool that enhances XP array performance management by: Controlling the performance available to each host and Host Bus Adapter (HBA) Limiting the maximum available performance for lower priority hosts Preventing lower priority hosts from impacting higher priority hosts Providing a number of ease-of-use features, such as creating and managing performance groups, scheduling, and reporting

H6773S F.00

433

2002 Hewlett-Packard Company

Key Features (1/2)

APM sets performance limits for groups of host HBAs via Worldwide Names (WWNs) or nicknames Performance groups enhance ease of management Automatically gathers information about the hosts and HBAs, and uses this information when making settings You can specify performance limits in either MB/sec or IOs/sec You can schedule performance settings to take effect by the hour, day, day of week, etc. APM monitors and reports performance results

Cache LUN
Cache LUN lets you reserve areas of the disk arrays cache memory for storing high-use data Use Cache LUN to achieve higher data access rates Use Cache LUN with VSC for even higher performance Only two Cache LUN operations Placing data in cache Removing data from cache

Cache LUN Modes

Data is not read into cache until referenced There are two Cache LUN modes: Priority mode Generates traffic to disk Cache areas can become free Writes cause destaging to disk Destaging to disk causes time delays Bind mode Keeps data in cache and doesnt generate traffic to disk Keeps data until extent is removed During a loss of AC power, battery can preserve data for up to 48 hours Mode is configurable for each cache extent
H6773S F.00 440 2002 Hewlett-Packard Company

Auto LUN XP
Auto LUN allows you to configure the disk array to monitor disk volume performance and auto-migrate the data You can create a migration plan using a script-like interface to define the migration conditions. Then, based on this plan, the array can move the data and path automatically whenever a threshold limit is crossed. There is also a manual migration option.

How Does NT/W2K See FC Services?

It depends on:

The HBA manufacturer and, for the same manufacturer, it depends on the driver version !!!!!! The Storage Device model and, for the same model, it depends on the firmware version !!!!!!
