The other two options allows you to change your password or delete the user, which are obviously under the rights of Administrator. After all these, exit the software and re-start to enable the changes take effect. Re-launch the StarDAQ after setting the user name and password and resume normal logging using your own user name and password whenever you need.

Preparing the system for DATA Collection At this stage, it is understood, a) that you have read and familiarized yourself with the operations of National Instruments Measurements and automation explorer the details of which are part of this manual. You have understood the Analog outputs that come from the signal conditioning modules and its specifications. (In this case, it is Syscon digital readouts for various tests.) However, if your customer is having his own signal conditioner, you should be able to read its data sheet and arrive at a suitable data for yourself. You have the complete information about the input connections and pin configurations of your data acquisition device. (This can be readily accessed from the MAX explorer) You know the transducer configuration of each of the test as required by the analysis program i.e.,GeoStar or similar program. You know the engineering units by which the data needs to be scaled. Also know the general principles involved in conducting the Civil Engineering tests and set up the appropriate Civil Engineering hardware. Any sample preparations involved in performing the required test for which the data acquisition is to be made. Familiarizing yourself with any specific requirement of the standards against which the data is required to be collected for that specific sample. That the USB data acquisition hardware supplied is connected to the PCs high speed 2.0 USB port and the device is identified and is active. You may be able to verify this through MAX.

Additional information and guidance about data collection The StarDAQ collects data based on the tasks you have setup in the National Instruments Measure and Automation Explorer (MAX). Hence, the task you define in the NI DAQmx needs to be done with utmost care. However, once the task is defined, the Acquisition of the Data is as easy as 1 2 3. Using StarDAQ, you can collect data for one test or more than one tests simultaneously as long as you can configure a task(test) in the MAX and the required channel physically are appropriate and vacant. That means, you can collect data for one Direct Shear, one Three Gang Consolidation and one of triaxial tests simultaneously and independently running using its own Data acquisition parameters. That means, you can Start or Stop any test independently without worrying about the current status of the other tests that are running. (For the purpose of providing examples, we will run through creating a task in MAX separately later.) Let us now assume, that we have tasks already configured in MAX. Our StarDAQ will read these tasks and populate on the StarDAQ Acquisition front panel. You will see the various tests listed. From the Main StarDAQ window,

click Data Acquisition.

The Data Acquisition window as below will be opened. If there are more than one test configured in the MAX, these will be populated in the Task Name Box field. If you are not sure what has been configured earlier, simply press the button Refresh Tasks and all configured and valid tests will be displayed.

Highlighten a Task and correspondingly in the Station Name box, the active channels will be displayed. Also, for the first time, enter the Engineering parameter details in the Engineering parameter drop down box and its unit. A good reference point to configure this is, go to demo data in the GeoStar package. All the data files (text files) will have headings which include what the engineering parameter and the associated unit for that channel. You might like to retain the same format for creating new Tasks and its settings. Again, coming back to the current example, the CBR test, the channels Dev1/ai3 and Dev1/ai4 have been configured. Here, Dev1 means Data Acquisition Hardware Device 1 and ai3 denotes analog input channel 3. Channel three is configured for penetration whose unit is in mm and ai/4 which is analog input channel no.4, which has been configured for Force and the unit is in Newton. Note: At any given point of time, one can connect more than one USB data acquisition hardware and these are identified as Device1, Device 2 etc

Example of Direct shear Test and CBR tests opened simultaneously. You can see the active channels and its configurations.

You can similarly configure for all other tests and run them individually and independently or collectively as required. Familiarizing the Data Acquisition Parameter window

Once, you have defined the channel and sensor configurations and its engineering parameters and units, you need to set your data Acquisition parameters, viz., Experiment Duration and Logging Interval. Use the up / down control box to set your experiment duration and the interval for logging the data. Similarly the Data Interval time Period Type may be Normal or Logarithmic or Square root of time or Change in Value. The selection of time interval period is by the radio button check option. Based on this selection, the logging period is automatically set. The valid options are 1. Normal Time Data is saved every n seconds, where n is data saving interval. 2. Square root of time. Data is saved at intervals such that SQRT ( TIME / x ) = n, where n = 1, 2, 3 . . . . You should enter the root time factor x. Eg. If you want your data to be saved at intervals 1,4,9, 16 secs enter root time factor as 2 3. Log of time. Data is saved such that TIME = x to the power n, where n = 1, 2, 3 . . . . You should enter the log time factor x. If you want your data to be saved at intervals 2,4,8,16 enter log time factor as 2. 4. Change in Value.

Data is saved when Master transducer output changes by specified value. There is a window called Broadcast IP. This is not a standard feature; but available as optional. This feature is to transmit the data to a remote IP address over the net. Below this parameter box, there is a button called Browse. Use this button to set the path and file name in which the data will be stored. Please note, that no entry or wrong entry in this field will not only cause the data not to get stored; but also cause some undesirable error pop ups. Hence, ensure that data saving path and file name is properly given. After making all these above settings, highlighten each of the channel and then press Save Channel Settings individually. That is required to be done to make the system understand that the appropriate parameters defined for the channels are applied and saved to that data / sample file. When you are done, a window pops up to confirm that the Data has been Modified and Saved.

After this, you are ready to acquire the data. Click Start Acquisition button to acquire the data. A pop up window as below opens to prompt the user to verify that the analog inputs are appropriately connected to continue the experiment.

When the user forgets to select the Period Type, a message pops up prompting the user to select the Period type.

The actual data can be viewed on the right side top window in a tabular format and below that the same data can be viewed graphically. As the data keeps coming, the table gets appended continuously until the set acquisition time is reached or user aborts the acquisition. Note: When you Start Acquisition and the USB device is not connected or not recognized, then you will get an error message shown below. You need to connect the device and ascertain that the device has been identified in MAX before getting into actual data collection.

Data Acquisition example: Period Normal

You will find that for a data Acquisition parameter of Experiment Duration 5 mins. With logging interval of 3 secs, with a Normal period type yields 100 points being acquired. This can be verified from the tabular column on the right side. You can also see the listing of the data file. Similarly, the data collection period can be set to when ever there is a change is value of signal in a channel designated as Master channel in the experiment. The collection of the data will be only when there is a change in the Analog value of the assigned channel. When you have completed data collection, it is advised to exit the program using the EXIT button, adjacent to STOP Acquisition button. If you want to acquire data for another experiment (task), then use the minimize button to continue the current channel and start a fresh window and set up an acquisition in the new window.
