The first National Park is Yellowstone National Park

NATIONAL PARKS IN INDONESIA

was declared on March 1, 1872.


In Indonesia, the first of 5 national parks were declared

in 1970, the 12 national parks were declared in 1982.


The management of national parks is controlled by the

decision letter No. 096 (1984) issued by The Forestry Minister of RI. Indonesia National Park is proposed to protect and preserve the nature ecosystem, scenery, germ plasma of floras and faunas/wildlife that useful for human community through the education, research and recreation activities.

THE CHARACTER OF INDONESIAN NATIONAL PARKS


The area of national park at least 6,000 ha (e.g. Gede

Pangrango NP is 15,000 ha; Ujung Kulon NP is 120,551 ha, West Bali NP is 60,000 ha, Leuser NP is 1,200,000 ha) It is not only forest area, but also the other nature area of terrestrial and/or aquatic ecosystem that has the ecological, biological and/or geological unique characters. Regarding the landscape management, the area is divided into 4 zones, i.e. sanctuary zone, wilderness zone, intensive zone and buffer zone.

NATIONAL PARKS ZONING


Law no. 5/1990 defines a national park as an area

designated to protect natural ecosystems and managed by the National Park Agency (Balai Taman Nasional or BTN) using a system of spatial zoning. A national park is to be used for research, education, cultural needs, tourism or recreation. This definition complies with the IUCN classification for national parks as Category II protected areas.
