Behavioral interview techniques

Analyse information collected from company research/talking to seniors working there and make a guess about the skills most desired by the employer. List the relevant skills. Think about which skills you possess and think of examples from your life where those skills were displayed. Use these examples while

answering instead of theoretical statements. Use the STAR formula. Make sure answers are detailed and specific. Avoid rambling. Employer wants to know what you have done in the past, not what you think you will do in future. Give short descriptions of each situation but be ready to give more details is asked. If in doubt ask, would you like more details on that? Would you like more examples? Etc. Take responsibility for communicating your strengths. Do not rely on the interviewer to pull it out of you.

Company Research
Size of the organization, no/ of employees, how long they have been operating, is it an umbrella group, services/products/aims, major competitors operating in the same field, job description, skills needed. This will help in the following kind of questions. What do you think it takes to be successful in this career? Why do you want to work in this company/industry? What do you know about our company?

What the interviewer is looking for

Want to know whether you have the necessary knowledge, skills and willingness to contribute and fit into the organizations culture. Also want to know whether your career goals are in line with the opportunities available within the organization. Need to provide proof that you are the right person with the right skills and attitude for the job. Some points to ponder are:

Are you a self-starter? Can you be depended upon in critical situations and to follow work through to completion? Are you enthusiastic and easy to work with? Can you work under pressure? Why do you want to work for them? Can you manage time effectively? Can you handle constructive criticism? Are you objective in evaluating yourself? When talking about strengths, employers want to know why it is strength and where it has been demonstrated. Foe weakness, they want to know what steps have been taken to improve. Situational questions are used to determine problem-solving skills, interpersonal relationships, management styles and basic common sense. You are a team leader. One of your team members consistently arrive late for work. What would you do? You are working on a deadline for your manager but your director asks you to drop everything and deal with a customer complaint. What would you do? A co-worker tells you in confidence that he thinks another colleague is stealing from the company? What would you do?

Off-the wall questions

Asked to see how well you can think on your feet, your creativity, and sense of humor. Dont get rattled if asked an oddball

question. Smile, take a deep breath and compose your answer. It is okay to take a minute to think rather than blurting out whatever comes to your mind. You dont have to be witty. Just be honest. There is no wrong answer, remember. If you could be any animal in the jungle what would you be? Sample response: I would be a gorilla because I want to be the king f the jungle and also because I would be able to climb the trees and get a birds eye view of what is happening in the forest. If you could be any character in fiction/a superhero/could have dinner with anyone fro history/if you were a car who or what would you be?
