Subject: Quotation for Trials for Sugar Cane Juice Sample Some points from J P Uncle: 1.

Experts have claimed that getting a shelf-life of 6 months for Sugarcane juice is a very difficult task, and yet not established. At least not commercially 2. Practically, a shelf-life of 2.5-3 months may be possible 3. Use of Nanotechnology and Irradiation for extending shelf-life are the latest developments, but yet not a preferred options. 4. Side effects of the methods are yet not assessed (similar to the conservative approach against GM foods) 5. Citric acid is the best option to be the preservative. Even in comparison with Ascorbic Acid 6. Potassium meta-bisulphite needs to be checked again (fear of its poisonous effects and legislative norms). Sodium meta-bisulphite could be an option instead. 7. PET bottles are not an option at all for preserved Sugarcane juice. 8. Tetra Pak could be an option, but time-temperature regime needs to be redesigned to suit the juice.

Rough Estimate of Costs involved 1. Sugarcane Juice: a. 48 Litres b. Rate: Rs. 10 per 200 ml c. Total: Rs. 2500 2. Citric a. b. c. Acid: 10 g Rate: Rs 2000 per 150 g Total: Rs 200

3. Sodium Meta-bisulphite: a. 5 g b. Rate: Rs 500 per 400 g c. Total: Rs 20 4. Sample size: a. No. Of Intervals: 8 (0, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 Days) b. No. Of Samples per interval: 12 c. Total no. Of Samples: 96
