BUBA Awards
What is BUBA?
BUBA stands for The British Universities in Brunei Association. It is an association consisting of 40 + UK universities all of whom have a strong interest and history of working successfully with the country of Brunei Darussalam and its students. The aim of the association is to promote relationships and develop understanding between British Universities and all Brunei Students who are interested in UK Higher Education. BUBA provides information for Bruneian students about:

the differences between UK Universities. the locations of UK Universities the Brunei student communities at different UK Universities how to apply to UK Universities how to contact your University of choice how to meet staff from your University of choice (in Brunei)

To celebrate its presence in Brunei Darussalam and looking forward to more successful collaboration, coexistence and service in this country for many years to come, representatives from BUBA recently met with officials from Brunei Darussalam Ministry of Education, and together they agreed to initiate a BUBA Award which is based on a competition targeted specifically for qualified students from Brunei Darussalam who meet the standard and excel in their submitted work. The latter must be submitted to and judged by the Organising Committee based on a set of criteria.

Purpose of BUBA Awards


The purposes of BUBA Awards are: i. to promote interest and develop understanding of British Universities among Brunei Darussalam students ii. to encourage the participation of students in research or project work on UK universities, which will give them some exposure on experiences on university studies in general and UK in particular iii. to provide recognition to students who participate, particularly those who show excellent performance in their submitted research or project work.

Participation
The competition is open to all pre-university students in Brunei Darussalam, that is, students in years 12 and 13.

Date of Submission
30th August of every year.

Types of Submission
Participants may submit their works/reports in any of the following forms: i. Mini research ii. Project work iii. Extended essays. All submissions must be written with a minimum of 3000 words, Times New Roman, font size 12, Spacing 1.5 and using British English. Students may refer to various research references from British Universities. Sources of References must be stated clearly. Originality of ideas and work is highly commendable and any acts of plagiarism will be penalised. Student can either work individually or in a maximum group of three persons.

Types of Awards
There will be 2 tiers of awards: i. School level 3 winners ( 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and 5 consolation prizes ii. National level 1 winner and 2 consolation prizes Student who won i.e. 1st prize winner will represent his/her school at the national level. At school level: 1st winner - $1,500.00 and a certificate 2nd winner - $900.00 and a certificate 3rd winner - $600.00 and a certificate 5 consolation prizes - $50 + certificate At national level: 1st winner - $1000 + ticket to the UK + certificate 2 consolation prizes - $300 + certificate

Judgment and Assessment of Submitted Work


In conformity with the Award, there will be 2 tiers of assessment At school level:

Schools/college to form a committee. The roles of the committee are: i. to assess and evaluate the quality, usefulness and its significant for further research ii. to examine the originality and authenticity of the work submitted iii. to judge on the content knowledge of the students on the work submitted. Committee will decide the winners at the school level.

At national level: The British High Commission and British University in Brunei Association (BUBA) will work collaboratively with the Department of Schools to assess and judge the winners at the national level.

Judging Criteria
Originality and Authenticity of the approach and creative use of innovative methods. . ii. Significance and impact of the mini research or project work or essays. iii. The usefulness and significant of the work submitted for further research. iv. Clarity of presentation and proper use of visual materials. v. Students response to questions during the judging presentation.
