and Jabel feesh.

Having done a reconnaissance trip, we are
now hoping to return with our rock climbing
equipment to abseil off the famous bridge
into the dizzying depths of the canyon
below.
On this particular trip though, George had
brought his Para-glider, and the news that
the foreigner was going to y spread like a
wildre through the village.
The local schools emptied, and a hundred
boys in matching green uniforms sat on the
edge of the cliff to see this spectacle.
With the help of a few locals, George laid
out his yellow glider, and when conditions
were favorable, he launched off the cliff
while his audience held their breath.
The villagers cheered, and chattered
excitedly, especially when the Egyptian
eagles came to soar around the glider as
George circled high above the valleys, rising
and falling with the currents.
At one point, the crowd became alarmed as
he disappeared into the clouds,
But were quickly relieved as his yellow
glider reemerged from the cloudy canopy.
Georg landed in a eld at the base of Jabel
Al Amir, and was welcomed by the locals
who happily gave him a lift back to the car,
and are perhaps still to this day talking about
the foreigner who came from the sky.
Desert Driving, Camping, and Sand Skiing.
Although the idea of skiing in the Middle
East may sound absurd to those unfamiliar
with the region, it is possible to hit the
slopes in Yemen; the sand slope that is.
We loaded up the land Cruiser and set off
for a weekend of desert driving, sand skiing,
and camping in Yemens Empty Quarter.
Just outside of Mareb, we met our
Bedouin security Mohammed, a charming
man who we soon discovered would also be
our chairlift.
We followed his old pickup truck off the
paved road,
and let air out of the tires of both vehicles
before making our way out into the desert.
We crossed dune after dune, like a roller
coaster we climbed and fell over the rolling
hills of golden sand.
Soon, we had left all traces of civilization
behind, and the only evidence of life in this

desolate place was the crisscrossing tracks

capable of surviving in this unforgiving
environment.
After several hours, we found a at spot
to camp. While Mohamed cooked up a
delicious mixture of chicken and lentils, we
pitched our tents, prepared the ski equipment
for the next morning, and built a large
campre.
After dinner, we lay back immersed in the
silence of the desert while we drank Bedouin
tea and tried to comprehend a billion stars.
The following morning, we were up with
the sun and cleared camp quickly, before
setting off to hit the sandy slopes.
Mohammed began the search for the tallest
and steepest dune in the desert, and it did
not take long to nd it. He accelerated up

the backside of the dune and as we reached

the summit he sped up as if to sail off the
top, but at the last moment threw on the
emergency break. The two front tires sailed
over the edge and the bed of the truck rose
high into the air nearly tossing us out.
I saw Mohammeds devilish grin in
the reection of the rear view mirror as
he chuckled to himself for startling the
foreigners.
We donned our boots and skis, each eager
to lay the rst tracks in the sand, and took
off rst cutting slowly down the dune, but
gathering speed as our condence increased.
On the second run, we decided to race to
the bottom. We exchanged condent nods,
and kicked off, our knees bent and went
speeding

ambitious hike up Jabel Buraa and were

rewarded with views over the hot and humid
Tihama plains that extend to the west to the
Kamaran Islands.
From Buraa we drove west through the
Tihama until we reached the tiny port of
Salif.
A twenty minute boat ride deposited us
on the main island of Kamaran, where we
arranged for diving equipment and a boat.
Yemen is a divers fantasy, and its 2000 km
of coastline are bordered by stunning coral
reefs, teeming with divers marine life.
Here in the Red Sea, the climate permits
365 dive days a year around the numerous
islands scattered off its coast, and many
of the countrys reefs remain unexplored.
Imagine the <Atlas, a 345 foot long
British steam tanker converted into a troop
carrier.
It was sunk by a torpedo from the Italian
submarine < Guglielmotti on September
6, 1940. Half of it still lies on the ocean

re-discovered. spent two days diving off

urban Island, and while we failed to nd
the <Guglielmotti, we did chase turtles
and blue dotted rays, and were delighted as
large schools of millions of small silver sh
spiraled around us in the water.
It is impossible for the diver not to be
impressed by the remarkable variety of
shapes, sizes, and colors of corals covering
the rocky bottom.
The coral remains healthy, untouched and
unaffected by the thousands of tourists who
pose threats to the marine environments of
other areas in the Red Sea outside of Yemen.
Perhaps the best experience though in the
islands was going night shing off Kamaran.
We set out on the boats at midnight, the
moonlight shining on the water, and with
shing line wrapped around soda cans and
bait; we each pulled up several sh and our
captain even landed a sting ray.
Returning to shore, we barbequed barracuda
on the beach and hung out until a dramatic
sunrise lit the sky pink.

Flying High over Shaara

Balanced on the peak of Jabel Al Amir in
Yemens northern highlands, Shaharas
dramatic mountain setting provides travelers
with a truly unique experience.
While only 160km north of Sanaa, Shehara
feels as if it is in another world, and the
journey itself to this isolated mountain
village is the most rewarding aspect of the
Shahara experience.
We drove to the base of Jebel Al Amir, and
here we were met by the friendly tribesmen
of Shahara.
We hopped into the back of one of their
Toyota trucks and hung on tightly way up
the nearly impossible incline, ascending
boulders with seemingly little effort on
our way to 2600 meters and some of the
countrys best views.
The stone bridge of Shahara is one of the
most recognizable landmarks of Yemen.
It was commissioned by a local lord in
the 17th Century, and was constructed of
limestone blocks to connect Jabel Al Amir

For most people, merely traveling to Yemen, a country nestled in
the south west corner of the Arabian peninsula, is an adventure
in itself. It is surrounded by the Red Sea, Arabian sea, the Empty
Quarter, and the strict land borders of Oman and Saudi Arabia
-making it an extremely isolated country. However, it is this
isolation that resulted in a trip to Yemen becoming the ultimate
reward for the true adventurer.

Yemens divers geography features

mountains, deserts, wadis, and sea, and
offers a plethora of opportunities for
adventure in unparalleled and unexplored
locations.
The following are selections from several
of our favorite trips in this adventures
paradise.
Driving and Diving: through the Haraz to
the Kamaran Islands
Road tripping from the capital Sanaa
through the windy mountains highway
in the Haraz to the Red Sea coast is an
amazing experience.
Several times along the way, we stopped
at lookouts to photograph the blankets
of clouds beneath us that slowly moved
through the wadi and engulfed the stone
towers built in cliff top villages.
The road descends through the emerald
mountains, and then snakes through a wadi.
Impressive cliffs surrounded us on two
sides, and a shallow river owed through
the wadi at khamis bani Saad. Villagers

in brightly coloured clothing sold us fresh

mangoes and chicken and lamb, and we
parked by the river. Khamis bani Saad is a
spectacular place to camp for a night, and
we pitched our tents, and built a roaring
campre. Taking at stones from the river
bottom, we heated them on the coals and
barbequed sizzling strips of lamb and
chicken while admiring the majestic sunset
behind the surrounding mountains.
The next morning, we left Khamis bani
saad and drove a short distance to one of
Yemens only nature reserves.
Hidden away between the Haraz Mountains
and the Tihama coast is breathtaking Buraa
one of Yemens last remaining forests.
The stunning landscape features large
granite slabs protruding from the lushly
covered hills and a series of valleys and
gorges shaded by tall trees.
Jabel Buraa stands tall at 2200 meters
overlooking the 4100 hectares of forest
and descends dramatically onto the coastal
plains to the west.

One of the most surprising things about

Buraa is one of Yemens best kept secrets.
Upon arriving at the main gate,
we were introduced to nearly 100
hamadryads baboons, residents of the
reserve.
They congregated on the road, stunning
their distinctive pink bottoms and eating
seeds fed to them by a reserve ranger.
As we watched them, we noticed that
several of the female baboons had
newborns hanging on tightly to their backs
or stomachs. The newborns fur is a dark
brown as opposed to the gray and white fur
of the mature baboons.
Inside the Buraa reserve, we trekked
through the magnicent mountain scenery,
and it was difcult to imagine that many
terraces carved into the steep mountains
rise like massive staircases and are planted
with qat or coffee trees. Numerous local
coffee farmers picked the coffee fruit from
the trees, and offered us a taste. Perhaps
with a new jolt of energy, we made an

This was my rst time seeing Yemen
outside of Sanaa. My friends have often
recommended traveling around Yemen and
now I know why the countryside is more
amazing than I imagined, nearly everything
I see in Yemen is beautiful, but the beauty
of the smaller towns and landscape is just
different from the city. I suggest to any
tourist to travel outside the cities and enjoy
another side of Yemen .
Liza
Very mountainous day with hidden pockets
of greenery. Buildings precariously placed
in with the hideaways tucked into the
Cliffside.
Morgan
Fantastic daytrip from Sanaa, offering a
peaceful afternoon of short hikes, incredible
views, and a bit of nature .
Namir
Kawkaban is beautiful - very quiet and
peaceful. The greenness of the wadis below
is amazing as well. The architecture is
remarkable, I have no idea how anyone
can build such grand structures let alone
entire villages atop giant boulders . Im
not sure what the appeal of Shibam is; we
didnt stop there. The trip from Sanaa to
Shibam/Kawkaban goes through some
amazing landscapes. I would like to do more
traveling and hiking in the mountains off to
the west .

If you need a short break from the fastpaced noisy metropolis of Sanaa I highly
recommend a day trip to Kawkaban-Shibam.
The walled city of Kawkaban on top of a
large cliff offers amazing views, a peaceful
walk through the old city makes you feel
like you are travelling back in time. Goats,
sheep and chickens wander the streets just
like the old days. We were lucky that we
found Ghir Ali a hotel hidden in the cliffs,
we sat in the mafraj overlooking the valley
while we listened to some music while
sipping on tea. After our break we walked
down the steps to Shibam, where carved in
the hillside there were old gravesites. When

we got to the bottom we saw an old Mosque,

walked around town and picked up lunch.
We then went on to Hajar where we went on
a little hike to see a waterfall. We were able
to do all of this in less than 8 hours, which
makes Kawkaban-Shibam a perfect day
adventure.

I think that Kokaban is the ideal place for
people that have been subdued to the very
tiring noisiness in Sanaa for too long.
Silence is golden some say and Kokaban
certainly is a goldmine. Kokaban is probably
the most enjoyable if you go by yourself,
not being disturbed by pressing timetables
or leisure time schedules. Pick up a good

book, enjoy the breathtaking view and relax:

spirits are lifted and beauty is all around.
Oh, and dont forget to give some alms to
the poor.
Asif
Kawkaban and Shibam offered breathtaking
views of valleys and other surrounding
natural structures. The hosts were very
gracious and provided a delicious lunch
which the students enjoyed together under
the shade of lovely tree and in the company
of neighboring villagers. The hiking was
spectacular and the traditional Yemeni drink
Kishr combined with some beautiful Oud
music provided some relief from the heat
and trekking.

to Al-Hamdani, the great Yemeni historian,

History of Yemeni tribes, is derived from
Kawkaban bin Himyar, which is consistent
with the Yemeni tradition of naming
most area by the names of kings and their
children.
A legend also mentions that the name
Kawkaban (which literally means two
stars) might have been derived from a story
regarding the citys location, at the top of a
mountain there were two great castles each
containing a big jewel to absorb lightening
bolts which threatened the castles due
to their height. These jewels had such
a magnicent light that they shone very
brightly, especially near sunset and allowed
travelers to be guided by their light and to
schedule appointments when the two stars
appear we meet, thus the name of the city.
While we were walking around the old city
with the company of Kawkabani educated
youth, they informed me that Kawkabans
role through historical conicts has had
many aspects, not least of which is rebellion
against Ottoman rule which occupied it at
one point and made it an ottoman province.

16

However, the struggle of its citizens enabled

it to achieve its independence and autonomy
as a small state called (Alkawkabania
country) away from the central authority in
Sanaa .
Kawkabans houses, buildings, castles and
mosques are spread over a three kilometer
area on the Al-Dila, mountain which date
back to the Hemyaree and Islamic area.
The use of sedimentary stone called AlAmshin for its buildings distinguishes all the
buildings because of its red-whitish color.
The city is surrounded by an old wall which
has only one entrance called Bab AlHadeed or (the iron entrance). One of most
historical features in Kawkaban is Al-Ghail
palace that is mounted on the side of the tall
cliff of Kawkaban, it overlooks breathtaking
views and reects of the architectural style
of the mountainous villages. This historic
palace contains several rooms of the local
administration, guards, mules, gristmill, and
goats.
This palace also still has fresh stream water
owing from the rocks that has been running
for hundreds of years. In this palace we sat

in the illustrious mafraj (room with a view)

and one of the students played guitar while
we sipped on Yemeni tea.
We departed Kawkaban and returned by the
Aqaba or a series of rocky stairways in
a way that splits the mountain to Shebam
city. There was lots of plant life on our
walk down, we took the time to smell the
owers. We saw the ancient caves where
up until recently the locals buried their dead.
Our drive continued toward a green AlAhagar area near Shibam with intention
to have lunch and walk around Al-Ahagar.
We walked through the forest to nd a large
waterfall with houses perched on top of the
cliffs. After this it was getting late so we
decided to return home, I had a number of
foreign students and tourists who write their
impressions of this quick trip.
Brad
Beautiful views from a historical town above
far reaching valleys. There was a peaceful
quiet feeling in the town. The climb along
the side of the cliff was challenging but the
trail was well kept .

Some Arabs say, there are ve
benets of traveling, but you will
get more benets when you make
a short weekend excursion to
the high mountain of Kawkaban
situated northwest of the capital
Sanaa.

When you visit, you will enjoy Kawkabans

magical nature, fresh air and spend time in
recreating in a place where of cavemen used
to dwell in the mountainside, as the region
of Kawkaban dates back to prehistoric era.
Kawakaban is a great example of ancient
Yemeni civilization, where you can become
acquainted to new friends, meet generous
and kind people that have not yet been
changed by modern lifestyles and learn
new cultures and language. The people of
Kawkaban are also well-known for delicious
Yemeni food such as Saltah, Bint alSahan
as well as other fresh and local fruits and
vegetables that come from this fertile region.
Arabic is one of the most difcult languages
in the world to learn, it is rare that you
will nd English speakers that have the
dedication to learn the Arabic Language.
Yemen is the perfect place to learn Arabic
language and be surrounded by great
Yemeni culture.
Sanaa Institute for the Arabic language

(SIAL) is one place where you will nd

English speakers that are willing to take
on the challenge of learning the Arabic
Language. The institute arranged a short
journey for the foreign students last month
to Kawkaban and Al-Ahagar area.
Twelve friends and I picked up an early bus,
strapped on our backpacks and departed
Sanaa. We listened to Yemeni traditional
music as our driver drove us across a at
road that was surrounded by amazing views
of the Yemeni countryside. We then headed
north to the road leading to Al-Mahweit
governorate and started driving up to
Kawaban mountain.
We began our ascent up to the mountain,
which was overlooking bright green terraces
in all directions enabling the inhabitants
to make their living in this usually hard
terrain. We were fortunate enough to know
Kawkaban city inside-out. Kawkaban is
about 2800 m above sea level. It embraces
the clouds and history. Its name, according

The two main places to buy these works of

art are the National Womens Center for
Development Handicrafts and the National
Handicrafts Training Center. For a chance
to see women at work and to possibly have
a lesson, if your needlework skills are up
to it, visit the rst shop. It is located in a
beautiful, traditional building in the heart
of the Old City across from the al Abhar
Mosque. Once inside, you feel as if you have
stepped into a time capsule. Every room
has been decorated so as to provide visitors
with a window into the rituals, traditions,
and daily life of Sanaani women of the past.
If you have a little time on your hands, the
ladies here can even arrange for a day tour of
the Old City. The tour, which lasts all day,
includes the standard guided walk around the
Old City in addition to cooking lessons, a trip

12

to the public steam baths, and the chance for

guests to dress up in traditional clothing.
Worth the effort, but difcult to nd, I usually
go to the Hope in their Hands shop, which
is part of the National Handicrafts Training
Center. This shop is located just off the
blacksmith souk of old Sanaa in what used
to be a caravan. It sells mostly traditional
Yemeni embroidery, but it also has some
other crafts such as baskets. There are small
makeup bags, pillow covers, pants, dresses
and even jambia belts on sale. But what
makes it so special is the quality of the work
and its purpose. The bags are all completely
hand embroidered with modernized versions
of Yemeni patterns. The stitches vary from
at featherstitches to round 3-dimensional
curlicues. The variety of colors and patterns,
which are on display, are sure to satisfy even

the most selective of buyers.

Embroidery has a long history in Yemen.
For centuries women have used it to decorate
everyday items for family use. It was once
common to see little girls dressed in long
dresses covered with rows of tiny handembroidered buttons. Almost anything in a
traditional Yemeni house can be enhanced
by a little embroidery. To this day, some
girls still wear pants with embroidered cuffs
around the house. Meanwhile, older Sanaani
women, when wearing the sitara and going
to special occasions, add a rectangular piece
of cloth, which they have embroidered with
gold and silver threads, called ras magmog
to their outts. The ras magmog is worn
over the top of the head so as to frame the
face. All of these things have been produced
by women for their own use for many years.
Now, thanks to Hope in their Hands and
the National Handicrafts Training Center,
women from all around Yemen are able to
use their embroidery skills to sell these works
of art to tourists; and, in doing so, they earn
income to help their families.

I am crazy about shopping. In fact, I consider
shopping to be one of the highlights of traveling. Over
the past six months, I have bought everything from
incense burners to baskets - all of reasonably good
quality and made by hand in Yemen. But my favorite
thing to shop for by far in Yemen is embroidery.
Yemeni embroidery is unique. The variety of stitches
and patterns it employs make it far more beautiful
and complicated than the embroidery of any other
country in the Middle East.

These two rivers once ran the whole

year through, strongly and heavily, and
particularly in the rainy season, giving a
beautiful sound to this mountain town.
But the two rivers have dried up in just the
past four years, they now run only during
periods of heavy rain.
There were and still are ve bridges
representing the main gates and entrances to
the city.
Three bridges link it to the opposite hill of
Jabal Al-Takar to the south and two from
the east of the city.
Due in part to the peerless and impressive
location of the city, the famous Queen Arwa

moved the capital of the Sulaihiah

State from Sanaa to Jibla between 455 AD.
Jibla served as capital under the Queen
for four and a half decades, it is still
abundant with historical landmarks from
that period, for example the queens palace,
the mosques, the bridges and two steam
hammams.
The queens palace in Al-Suna Square
consisted of 360 rooms on three oors
with three main gates and a mosque in the
middle, called Masjid Al-Dar
Awall with one main gate also surrounded it.
Unfortunately, the palace and the wall were
ruins with the passage of time and citizens

pillaged the stones.

All that remains are 20 deserted rooms and
a small part of the wall on the southern side,
nothing more.
The mosques, 32 in total and almost all
built by the queen, included four that were
exclusively for women.
The biggest one is the Queens Mosque.
It is about 965 years old.
It may not be as big as the Great Mosque of
Sanaa, but it has the same form and design.
It consists of two oors, the ground oor
is used as storage for spare furniture and
decorations, for instance inscribed logs,
windowpanes and shutters, and cofns.

Success.. Challenges of reality

and limits of the impossible

Chairman

The message above was sent by a dear friend and

an ex-member of the Yemeni cabinet whom we thank
sincerely for his kind words and we also thank you
for your continued commitment.
Yes, dear travelers, weve faced extremely difcult
circumstances that left Yemen Airway with only two
choices. But rstly, let me remind you of three essential
facts about Yemen Airways to help you further
understand the situation. Firstly, the main asset of
our national carrier is not only materialistic; its not
limited to the buildings, the nancial assets nor the
equipments or the machines. Its in fact much more
than that. Our main asset is our pilots, engineers,
technicians, hostesses, administrators, and all the
men and women across our various departments at
home and abroad. Our human resources at Yemen
Airways are our greatest asset and the major source
of power that we have. Yemenia staff have always
been dedicated, committed and highly qualies. (The
company organizes over 1500 training courses every
year for its staff in all elds.)
Our human capital investment has been successfully
feasible and proved reward-full when our staff
managed to overcome the catastrophic consequences
of the national crisis that both Yemen and Yemenia
have been facing since the beginning of 2011. We were
able to maintain our leading position and continue
serving our customers despite facing mountainous
nancial losses. Furthermore, we were also able
to honor our continued commitment to provide the
highest safety measures across all of our operations.
The motivation behind such dedication is very
simple; our capital is only monetary and our prots
arent limited to corporate bank accounts. Over
decades of airlines operation, both expertise and
circumstances have shown us that passengers are not
just customers but friends who value their long term
condence and mutual acceptance with Yemenia.
This, for us, is much more valuable than monetary
prots. Its no wonder then that we consider our
passengers our primary capital whose renewed trust
is our main prot.
It is this that motivates every member of Yemenia
staff to continue serving you at their best, and
to prioritize your safety at the highest standards
while maintaining your friendship as a valuable
asset. The purpose; and the third fact, is to keep the

national carrier of the Republic of Yemen ying high,

raising our national ag across the globe as a ying
ambassador of Yemen; the cradle of civilizations.
While we realize the challenges we faced over the
past 12 months were enormously difcult; we were
in fact left with only two options to choose from; to
succeed or to ... succeed. Yes, we had the only option
of moving on and making successful history, as
nothing less was expected from the regions longest
operating airliner. Todays Yemenia is the result of
the experienced, accumulated know-how of both
Yemenia and Alimda (formerly Yemen Aviation).
Our current staff are either sons or grandsons of
those who launched the aviation industry in Arabian
Peninsula, when an aircraft made the regions very
rst landing in Aden in 1st half of the 20th century.
With all this tradition of success, Yemen Airways was
successfully capable of overcoming these difculties
that sounded to some like impossible. Thanks to
the determination of our staff, the loyalty of our
customers and the collective support of all Yemenis;
we were able to continue our noble mission to
spread the Yemeni wings with pride, distinction and
professionalism.
Im condent that Yemenia will also overcome the
consequences of these tragic moments, and that
Yemen will come through stronger to help build a
better future for all Yemenis, in a peaceful, prosperous
country full of understanding, cooperation and
love. I join millions of Yemenis in praying that the
GCC Yemen Initiative and the National Coalition
Government will both lead us to the right path out
of this dilemma.

Dear Yemenia friends and customers

While no words can express how glad I am to
welcome you on board every single ight of Yemen
Airways, please allow me to send my sincere thanks
to all those who made it possible..
Thank you to all Yemenia personnel and unknown
soldiers..
Thank you for all of our friends for their passionate
understanding, support and kind feelings..
Thank you to you our dear passengers for trusting
and choosing Yemenia.
Bon Voyage
