PGDM (Agribusiness) - 2010-12 Term V: Supply Chain Management

Course Background Industrial organizations worldwide are continuously faced with challenges of reduced product development time, improved product quality, reduced production lead-times and low production cost with ever-increasing global competition. These challenges cannot be effectively met by isolated improvements in specific organizations (or organizational units) within a larger system of interdependent organizations (or organizational units). Further, these interdependent organizations (or units) should partner together to support the supply chain processes for creating products for customers. The value chain concepts learned earlier are extended upstream and downstream, thereby limiting the organizational performance to the corresponding dynamics of the entire supply chain. Thus, while redefining the inter-organizational roles of supply chain partners, the supply chains span from raw materials, to manufacturing, distribution, transportation, warehousing, and product sales. An entire supply chain could either exist in the same company or span across multiple enterprises before reaching the customer. Course Objective This course is aimed at creating awareness on the desirability of supply chain management (SCM) concepts for the Indian Agri-Business Industry. The focus will be on integrated supply chain management systems. The integration of the physical (material flow) and virtual (information flow) value chain across multiple organizations will be highlighted. The emphasis will be on cross-functional approaches to supply chain management, including Marketing, Sales, Research & Development, Finance & Accounting, Manufacturing / Operations, and Information Technology. The participants will get a chance to rethink the way organizations integrates suppliers, production and distribution in the globally competitive economy. Pedagogy The basic reading material will be provided to the students in the form of hand-outs. The course is mainly built around the cases from various sources and theory available in the reading material. Pedagogy includes lecture and case method, exercises and assignments.
