CAS-ED DEPARTMENT SAINT VINCENTS COLLEGE DIPOLOG CITY SYLLABUS ENGLISH 101 I.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION English 101 (Writing in the Discipline) is a three (3) unit course designed to help students develop their competence in communicating their ideas effectively through sentence and paragraph construction. It places emphasis on the rhetorical paragraphs of unity, coherence, and emphasis and the application of such principles in research paper writing. As a continuation of English 100, English 101 provides the student with more intensive and exhaustive drills in the development of the four basic communication skills namely, listening, speaking, reading, and writing in his/her own discipline. Prerequisite: English 100 Credit: 3 units II. SUBJECT RATIONALE The Filipino student today faces tremendous challenges. Both national and international events engulf him/her. Important matters like WTO, APEC, international terrorism, labor relations, foreign debt and policy, OFWs, economic crises, insurgency, exodus of medical and other professionals abroad and the like claim his/her undivided attention. In order to cope with these enormous issues, he/she must accelerate his/her problem solving skills, acquire the knowledge and skills to face the demands of a changing environment and confront the issues squarely with all the resources at his/her command. Global competitiveness must be instilled to every college freshman. While we seek to preserve our national heritage and look to our cultural past in order to provide some permanence to the fragile present, we must headlong the challenges of our fast-paced society. Competence not only in speaking but also in writing is essential to college students. This subject intends to fulfill these objectives. III. GENERAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the term, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to speak and write clearly for specific purposes. 2. Gain knowledge on the common paragraph development by writing a unified, coherent, and emphatic paragraphs about them. 3. Demonstrate not only literal comprehension skills but inferential skills. 4. Gain an understanding on current issues by actively participating in class discussions on such issues. 5. Share his/her insights on panel discussions and debates based on the rhetorical acts of paragraph development. 6. Manifest appreciation in the role of English in contemporary times, his/her academic life, and his/her future practice. 7. Integrate positive Filipino Christian values in his/her everyday communication. 8. Apply the basic principles in effective writing of sentences and paragraphs.

Write and compose simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences following the general rules 2. Write and compose a unified, coherent, and emphatic sentences. 3. Identify the different methods of paragraph development and their specific functions. 2. Write effective, impressive examples of the different methods of paragraph development. 3. Discriminate the beginnings and endings of articles. 4. Point out the main idea in a lengthy paragraph. 5. Revise and rewrite faulty paragraphs by incorporating sensible ideas. B. Topics 1. V. SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS 1. Each student is required to submit a well-written research paper according to his/her discipline before the end of the final examination and defend the same (optional) at the given time allotted by the subject teacher. Group research is at the option of the student subject to the approval of the teacher. 2. Submit at least two samples of paragraphs using the common methods of paragraph development. 3. A three samples of full length paragraph (a miniature composition) following the rules and technical format of writing the introduction, body, and conclusion. VI.
