CURRICULUM LEADER AS A CHANGE AGENT

What is a curriculum leader? How can a curriculum leader be a change agent? John Maxwell, author of the book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow, once said that A good leader has the ability to instill within his people confidence in himself. A great leader has the ability to instill within his people confidence in them. Curriculum leadership involves working with multiple people to ensure that the curriculum is aligned both horizontally and vertically. Curriculum development is the essential function of school leadership. Whether the role is carried out by a principal, an assistant principal for curriculum, a team leader, a department head, or by leading classroom teachers, the curriculum defines all other roles in a school. If we would narrow it down and study it, leadership refers to the role or process that enables systems and individuals to achieve their goals. Curriculum refers to all the experiences that learners have to go through in a program of education. Curriculum leadership therefore is the act of exercising functions that enables the achievement of a school's goal of providing quality education. The definition of curriculum leadership involves functions and goals. A curriculum leader has to take charge of making sure that the curriculum goals are achieved. That ultimate goal is to maximize student learning by providing quality in the content of learning. Curriculum leadership focuses on what is learned (the curriculum) and how it is taught (the instruction).

On the other hand, Curriculum leaders are change agents who make decision in doing something and making a difference through working with others. They are empowered and they empower others and also recognize the sources of their personal power and focus on using it ethically to create change and influence others to do the same. Believing in their abilities to act as leaders, additionally help a group or organization to believe in the leaders capacity to collectively influence change, thereby making a difference. Change agents are strategic thinkers with a vision that is shared across the institution. They are fearless but pragmatic risk-takers who can envision success. They are proficient storytellers and experts at managing complex problems and conflict among potential supporters. But none of these skills will lead to success unless grounded in a passion for the end goal, and the ability to sustain a marathon through the challenges and setbacks inherent in bold visions. Higher education cannot transform itself to meet the challenges of the new millennium without this passion and perseverance on the part of its leaders. Curriculum development plays a significant role in teaching and learning. Most educators will admit that planning is an essential part of their profession. If curriculum development drives the work of teacher teams, then schools must create time for teachers to collaborate, engage in conflict and provide a process for reflection and revision. Curriculum development should be a priority in schools, rather than something that is handed to teachers as a top-down product. When teachers collaborate to develop the curriculum, they will have co-workers who support them when they come to a fork in the road in instruction. Curriculum Leadership is important to the success of a school district and these ten truths can

help a leader develop multiple leaders. Curriculum leadership is about empowering those around you to be successful.
