The Way of Philosophy

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom". So what is the way of Philosophy? The way of philosophy is the nature on the desire to acquire the right knowledge on the answers to our never-ending questions. For some it may be an unrealistic study, an irrelevant to the needs of the times and the concerns of the contemporary man. To gain knowledge one must do philosophical search which needs a thorough critical reflection. This is then called a philosophical inquiry which for me is a very demanding and only suitable for those who possess a fair degree of courage, humility, patience and discipline. Doing philosophy requires courage since one never know what one will find at the end of a philosophical inquiry, he/she must be ready to accept without question on what the outcome/result is, rather to reflect upon what is present and to submit it to critical inspection before arriving any conclusions. Doing philosophy also requires humility, because not every philosophical inquiry is a success, it may or will always fall into error thus, one needs to admit that after all, not everything has or have its answers. Doing philosophy also requires both patience and discipline because it takes long hours of hard work to do philosophical inquiry. Doing philosophy is no heaven at all since it requires pain and even makes your head hurt. It is not easy to think beyond what is expected because to answer ones question you need commit huge amounts of time laboring over issues both difficult and subtle. For me if the answers come easily to us, maybe our inquiries are certainly superficial. Only difference between one who chooses to shoulder the pain and one who does not is that the former recognizes that there is no shortcut to truth. Philosophy is characterized as much by its methods as by its subject matter. Although philosophers deal with speculative issues that generally are not subject to investigation through experimental test, and philosophy therefore is more fully conceptual than science, philosophy properly done is not mere speculation. Philosophers, just like scientists, formulate hypotheses which ultimately must answer to reason and evidence. This is one of the things that differentiate philosophy from poetry and mysticism, despite its not being a science. Thus, the way of philosophy is the way to a deeper and a comprehensive view of reality. Its task
