Lifestyle-wise, college-educated adults also have a lower rate of obesity and are less likely to smoke. In addition, their children tend to be less obese as well. Plus individuals with higher levels of education are more likely than those with lower levels of education to engage in leisure-time exercise.9 During the decade from 1998 to 2008, the smoking rate declined from 14 to 9% among adults with at least a bachelors degree, while the smoking rate for high school graduates only declined from 29 to 27%.10 Additionally, having a college degree can provide benefits that can improve the lives of your family as well as your own personal health. For example, of parents with at least a bachelors degree, 68% percent read to their children daily, compared with only 41% of parents who are high school graduates. Plus, children of college graduates seem better prepared for school than those of parents without degrees.11 Finally, and perhaps most compelling of all, college-educated adults, on average, tend to live seven years longer than those with just a high school education.12 What does it all mean? Simply this: If you get the degree for the career you want, chances are youll be happier, healthier, and have a longer time to enjoy the life youve made for yourself.
The difference between a college graduate and a high school graduate is more than $1 Million.

Because when you think about it, it just follows that those who have chosen their careers also tend to have a certain level of control over their lives and futures as well. Theyre able to do things that they may not have had time for, due to the fact that their careers dont get in the way of their lives, or their futures. For example, college graduates enjoy:15

A good paycheck goes a long way toward making so many other things possible. That, and a job you enjoy that has advancement potential, make for a career that can lead to a better life. Today, a great career with a good paycheck almost always requires a college degree. Why? Consider this: a typical bachelors degree recipient can expect to earn about 66% more during a 40-year working life than the typical high school graduate earns over the same period.16 Heres something else youll want to know: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people with a Bachelors degree earn over 60% more on average than those with only a high school diploma. Over a lifetime, the gap in earning potential between a high school graduate and someone with a B.A. (or higher) is more than $1 million.17

Ten of the 20 fastest-growing occupations projected for 20082018 are healthcare-related. Healthcares on track to generate 3.2 million new wage and salary jobs between 2008 and 2018more than any other industry. While other industries have a recent history of employee layoffs, healthcare has never experienced a slowdown, and in fact continues to create new jobs. There are a number of healthcare careers from which to choose, and with the right degree you can establish the healthcare career thats right for you. Plus, healthcare can be a career thats quick to get into, since many positions require only an associates degree to startfar less than the four years of college education that other industries often demand. The following associates degrees can help you jump-start your healthcare career: Associate of Occupational Studies in Medical Specialties Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy Associate of Occupational Studies in Surgical Technologist Associate in Nursing Education
If youre compassionate and like helping others, you should consider a career in healthcare. But accounting is more than just debits and credits. Forensic accounting is a new branch of accounting that may involve searching for evidence of criminal misconduct, investigating fraud and crimes against property, and giving expert testimony in court trials. Like every important decision, starting a new career takes thought and planning. One thing to plan for is earning your degree. These days, it seems a degree is almost mandatory to land a good job in a secure field with lots of growth. Another important decision youll need to make is which college will prepare you best for the career you choose. First, make sure the schools in which youre interested are accredited and have the programs your looking for. And if youre worried about getting lost in the crowd, consider choosing a smaller college that focuses on a more flexible, personal approach to learning. For instance, consider Stevens-Henager College, CollegeAmerica, California College San Diego and Independence University: not only do these accredited colleges offer the personalized learning for the careers weve mentioned, they also offer programs designed to help busy people finish their degrees more quickly than in traditional programs. Finally, remember that you never have to settle. All good schools, including those just mentioned, have financial aid programs for those who qualify, plus financial consultants who work to help make it affordable for you to attend college. Good luck in your search, and your future.

achieve whatever I was determined to do and worked towards that goal. I gained courage and confidence. I went from making $12.50 an hour before college, to over $22.00 an hour after college. It is a wonderful feeling to know myself as someone who obtained a college degree even in the face of so many obstacles. The administration and faculty at Stevens-Henager really helped provide support and assistance for me to be able to attend school. I recommend Stevens-Henager College to anyone who has time restraints or who wants to be able to learn the latest technologies. I also appreciate that former students can sit-in on any class in order to upgrade their skills.
Think you have obstacles preventing you from earning your degree?
You need to read Adams story.
Sure, finding the time and energy to go to college to earn your degree takes some sacrifice. But imagine being a high school dropout with five small children and no car. Youll find Adam Wisdens story not only amazing, but inspirational as well. If you think about it, if Adam can do this, so can you.
In Adams words: I was 27 years old when I enrolled at Stevens-Henager College in Murray, Utah. I had dropped out of high school when I was 16 and earned my GED at the age of 17. After experiencing rejection by employers for positions and promotions due to my lack of higher education, I truly began to understand the need to obtain a degree. I was married and had 5 small children. My wife was a 9th grade drop-out and had no marketable skills. I had been unemployed for several months already and had just lost our only vehicle. We were really struggling with our finances. I was attracted to the BS in Computer Science program at Stevens-Henager College because the courses were very interesting to me (i.e. Computer Networking) and they utilized the latest technology. I was also excited to learn that I could obtain my BS degree in as little as 3 years. I later learned and took advantage of taking classes day and night in order to enable me to finish earlier. I finished school after 1.5 years! After receiving my degree in 2003, I was better qualified for higher-level positions including supervisory positions. I was able to network with other students at school to help me find a good job. I learned that I could

By comparison, my new estimated yearly income is in the $38,400.00 area. But my favorite part that made me feel good, and to stop and say to myself You know what? If I could do this again I would do it in a heartbeat! was when I went back home to visit family and friends I actually felt

Frankie Schuman, Graduate Master of Science in Health Services-Health Promotion Independence University In Frankies words: Reaching this goal has increased my self-confidence and it has affected my life in many more, tangible ways. I found the Wellness Promotion program at Independence University [CCHS/IU] to be the perfect fit for a school nurse. It is exciting and rewarding for me to successfully apply textbook theory to real life situations, making a positive difference in the lives of others.

This excellent program gave me the tools needed to plan, implement and evaluate a variety of wellness programs, centering always on healthy lifestyle choices with an emphasis on self-responsibility. If you think that you cannot do it, think again. When life throws you a curve, change your attitude! Success can be yours. CCHS/IU helped me to become a more effective leader, both personally and professionally and reinforces that knowledge is power. Remember: If I could do it...so can you! You will never regret your decision!
anticipationhow well would I do as an adult student with a full family, how well would my family adjust to my new schedule and responsibilities outside of them, and when I was done with the program would my new job provide an annual income at least equal to the cost of my new education. Two weeks before I earned by degree from CollegeAmerica, I began my cool new job at the Heart and Vascular Center of Northern Arizona, located on the west campus of Flagstaff Medical Center. I am a full-time medical assistant in an outpatient office setting but I receive all the benefits of an employee of Northern Arizona HealthcareI have opportunities to learn something new and co-workers who are willing to teach me.
Now its your turn. Why settle for less than the career and future you deserve?
Though your story may be different, the pathway to reaching your dreams can be the same. Adam, Cesar, Kathie and Frankie each sought out colleges that offered the flexibility and assistance

Do you like caring for people in their time of need? Are you smart at math and enjoy working with technology? Are you an independent person who wants the freedom of working in a career field that offers several different work environments?
If you answered yes, you may have what it takes for a career in respiratory therapy. As a typical respiratory therapist working in a hospital, your job will be to meet and care for patientsfrom newborns to seniors. Following physician-approved protocols, youll perform an assessment of each patient, develop a care plan, treat the patient, monitor patient response, and modify the care to meet the patients needs. Respiratory therapists routinely work in hospital intensive care units caring for patients on life support, making decisions that directly affect the patients outcome. If you choose to work in home care, youll teach
patients and their families to use ventilators and other life-support systems. In addition, youll visit patients in their homes to inspect and clean equipment, evaluate the home environment, and ensure that your patients have sufficient knowledge of their diseases and the proper use of their medications and equipment. You may also make emergency visits if equipment problems arise. In some hospitals, you may perform tasks that fall outside your traditional role such as pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking-cessation counseling, disease prevention, case management, and polysomnographythe diagnosis of breathing disorders during sleep, such as apnea. As a Respiratory Therapist you may also treat
critical-care patients, either as part of a surface and air transport team or as part of a rapid-response hospital team. Job opportunities are projected to be good for those who enter the respiratory therapy field.1 In fact, recent health care reform has pushed several nursing facilities, long-term care and acute care hospitals to hire additional respiratory therapists in an effort to improve patient care. Administrators and directors of nursing recognize that by having a skilled respiratory therapist available, they can significantly reduce their patients chances of hospitalization and re-hospitalization.2

in allied health programs, IU early on made its mark in areas such as respiratory care education, becoming the first institution to offer accredited respiratory care programs at a distance. Throughout its history, IU has also reached beyond the barriers of traditional on-campus education to offer programs not only to working adults across the United States but also to those serving in the military and to international students living in the U.S. In 2005, CCHS became Independence University, a name that more accurately reflects the institutions broader range of programs and its philosophy that education should lead to greater independence. In 2010, Independence University merged with its affiliated institution, Stevens-Henager College, becoming a branch of Stevens-Henagers main campus in Ogden/West Haven, Utah.
