Year 3G CURRICULUM LETTER

TERM 2

January 2012

Dear Parents, I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year and I hope you and your children are ready and refreshed to enjoy our second term together. Over the next term we will be following the IPC unit of work called Survival Food and Farming. *Please inform me if your child has an allergy of any kind, because in this unit we will be preparing, tasting and eating different types of food. In Geography we will be finding out about the food that is grown in both our host and home country. We will; Look at where food comes from. Find out about high and low mileage meals guest speaker Mr. Bong. In History we will be finding out about and making some of the foods people used to enjoy. We will; Explore ways people have made bread. Discover what explorers and other people in history actually ate. Plan a meal for space or exploration. In I.C.T. we will be learning about the world food situation and agriculture. We will be evaluating some websites that tell us more about farming around the world. In Science we will; Grow food crops. Find out why milk is kept cold. Find out about physical and chemical changes that occur when food stuffs are heated and cooled. In Technology we will; Grow and/or make some food of our own. Make bread residential trip to Mr. Kahns restaurant. (Attempt to) make butter! Make our own sandwiches. Create a meal. Well also be eating rather a lot. If you have any suggestions regarding this IPC unit, or if you would like to come in to talk to the children, your input is much appreciated. Please let me know! In Maths, we will be focusing on; Counting, partitioning and calculating Securing number facts and understanding shape Handling data and measures Calculating, measuring and understanding shape Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

In Literacy, we will be focusing on; Reading and writing instructions Shape poetry and calligrams Dialogue play Investigating and using a dictionary and a thesaurus Plurals, adjectives, collective nouns Punctuation revision and more extensive use of capital letters, full stops, question & exclamation marks, commas, commas in lists and speech marks Grammar Comprehension Further developing a joined up handwriting style Spelling; high frequency words spelling strategies looking at patterns and learning rules REMINDERS

P.E. is on Monday and Swimming on Thursday. Please ensure your child always has a full kit. Library is on Tuesday. Please ensure your child has his/her library books (the loan can be extended!) First ASA to be announced. Entry Point China 3rd January 2012. If you have anything we can use for display, we would be very grateful. 23rd/24th January Chinese New Year school closed. 13th - 17th February midterm break school closed. 30th March 16th April break school closed.

I would also like to remind you that hair must be tied back for P.E. and absolutely no jewellery is allowed in the Monday and Thursday lessons. Please also ensure your child has his/her hat every day, brings a bottle of water (can be refilled at any time) and is dressed appropriately for outdoor play, i.e. sensible shoes and no sleeveless tops.
