Capturing the wedding romance with a Love Letter Ceremony Share your story with the guests
ave an image slideshow made of various pictures of you and your fiance each as you were growing up and then of you together up to a short time before the wedding and set the image slide show to a special song. The video is not only a great keepsake for the bridal couple to look back on; it is also an entertaining accessory for guests to enjoy during your reception.

ou may want to consider capturing the wedding romance with a Love Letter Ceremony.

H I

Before the wedding day, the bride and groom each write a love letter expressing their deepest feelings towards each other. During the wedding ceremony, the officiant will elaborate on the meaning of the letters as the bride and groom place their letters in a wooden wine box. The letters should not have been read by anyone except the author of each letter. While this can be personalized however you wish, the letters may describe the good qualities you find in one another, the reasons you fell in love, and your reasons for choosing to marry. The box should be big enough to hold a pair of wine glasses, a special bottle of wine to share later in your marriage, and the love letters. The bride and groom will then close the box and lock it with a key. When the time comes, whether in the midst of hardship or while celebrating their 5 year Anniversary, the couple can reopen the case and relive that special moment when they said, I do. The letters will finally be shared along with a special wedding day bottle of wine.

The Perfect Photo

f you want a good picture of your dad walking you down the aisle, instead of a picture of your backs, take a few steps down the aisle, stop, turned around and have photographer take a picture of you two. If the photographer is able to capture the church alter and your waiting fianc at the back on your photo, you will have the best photo ever.

Photo Guest Book

nstead of having an ordinary guestbook, that you hardly ever look at, create a photo guest book. The guestbook attendants can take Polaroid photos of each guest... either individually or in a group; however they come, and put it on the pages of the guestbook/ scrapbook. The guests will then sign on the bottom of their picture. This way you will have a photo album of all the guests at our wedding!

Who is who?
henever guests go to a wedding they are always wondering who the people in the bridal party are and what is their relation to the bride and groom. To avoid this at your wedding, in the program, list each person in your wedding party with a little paragraph on how you know this person and a little fun titbit and/or why they are special to you. It will be nice for your bridal party to read and give your guests a special insight of your friends and family so as not to leave them guessing who is who!

Flower bouquets for the bridesmaids

or your wedding, have your bridesmaids start the walk down the aisle without a flower bouquet. As they walk down the aisle, each guest seated at the edge of the aisle on the brides side should hand the bridesmaids a flower. The bridesmaids will gather them together and when they reach the front of the church, the groomsmen can tie a ribbon around the bouquet.

hen first starting the wedding planning, youre probably feeling overwhelmed with the lack of knowledge of what needs to be planned and organized. Here is a guide to help you grasp and have the basic understanding of all the areas that go into making up your wedding day and where decisions and actions need to be taken.

23

SIGNATURE PLANNING

Setting the Date

After getting engaged, this is the first thing to do. However, it isnt as simple as it seems and there is a great deal that you should consider before choosing your date. The location, the wedding theme, family availability, probable weather, the availability of venues and potential date clashes are just some of the things that should be thought about when pencilling in the date for the Big Day.

Picking a Theme
This seems a minor decision in the grand scheme of things but you will be surprised how many other decisions your chosen theme will influence. Choosing a wedding theme idea for your wedding is the most important decision youll make for the big day and it should reflect your personalities and set the tone for the whole day. The key is to remember that a theme can be as elaborate or as subtle as you like. Whether you want to go all-out with an African twist, or simply want to stick to a certain colour scheme, a theme can provide an ideal focus as you plan your wedding.

The reception
The reception is a generic term typically applied to the venue where the Wedding lunch (meal), speeches, cake cutting and presents giving take place. It is sometimes the same venue as that which is used for the service, or alternatively is usually within a 30-or-so minute drive from the service venue. Menus, seating plans, timings, accommodation for guests, room set-up, last orders and more all need to be co-ordinated along with other elements such as music, entertainment and decorations.

Picking a Colour Scheme

The colour scheme will flow throughout the course of the day from your bridesmaids dresses, decorations, cake, favours, flowers, accessories, table linens and even the invitations. You could use your favourite colour or colours that emphasise your overall wedding theme or perhaps you would want to reflect the time of year with darker deeper colours for cold season weddings or lighter brighter colours for a hot/warm season wedding. When it comes to choosing colours, the choice is endless!

The Service
Services can be traditional, religious, customized, romantic, multi-cultural, interfaith, etc. The service is among the first decision a couple has to make, followed closely by the venues location, time of the service, readings and hymns/music. Factor in the various registry offices across the country as well as the number of churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and more, and you can see that there are various choices available to choose from. Parents may have strong views on the service, especially if they have strong religious beliefs, so prepare yourself

SIGNATURE PLANNING

Hair and Beauty Entertainment

When it comes to the entertainment portion of your wedding this should be treated with care as with all your other very important wedding details. The entertainment seems to be one of, if not the most important components to a reception. Sure, the food, decorations, and socialization are very important but without entertainment, these events would take on an entirely different personality. Once you have decided upon your theme and chosen your outfit, you will need to decide upon how to wear your hair and how to have your make-up done. It is important to remember that the hair and makeup should not compete with the brides dress; rather the hair and makeup should complement the dress. It is very important to arrange hair and make-up trials to help you decide on what suits you. For all you Grooms out there, you too will need to think about your beauty regime such as shaving and haircuts.

Music
Music for the wedding is a must whether it is a CD, a string quartet or swing band and DJ on the evening. Choosing wedding music is just one of the many tasks leading up to your big day and it can feel like an overwhelmingly important one. Music sets the mood, and really does a lot for the ceremony.

The Grooms and Groomsmens Outfits

Usually hired rather than bought outright, the Groom, Best Man, Ushers and Fathers of the Bride & Groom will all need to be kitted out in formal outfits with a consistent theme that compliment the Wedding Gown and Bridesmaids dresses. Groomsmen attire is all about being attractive yet subtle at the same time.

One of the most important decisions you will make when planning your wedding is selecting the perfect gown, meant to dazzle your man. Whether you know exactly what you are looking for, or if youre beginning your search with little more than a general idea, there are several things you should consider before purchasing your gown, the cost, material, design, colour, measurements, accessories and so much more need to be determined. The gown should reflect your personality, taste and style and set the tone for your wedding.

The Wedding Dress

Flowers
The beauty of flowers can add to any occasion and blend seamlessly with your theme and colour scheme. You will need to organize flowers for both the Reception venue and the venue for your Service - they will also be used for buttonholes, corsages and, of course, the bouquet.

Decorations
Wedding decorations are a very important part of your whole overall theme. It sets the mood for this special day, and presents your guests with a beautiful and memorable setting that creates a serene or party atmosphere. If you are planning a break in the day, it is quite common for different arrangements to be used for the service, the reception and evening party to help set the scene and add to the fun and romance.

SIGNATURE PLANNING

Wedding Rings
The wedding rings, usually gold, platinum or white gold symbolise marriage and indicates commitment and fidelity. Typically worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, they are exchanged at the service and it is becoming popular these days to have matching rings for both the Bride and Groom.

Photography & Videography

Photographs and film provides a lasting memory to your Big Day that you can revisit over and over again even show them to your children and grand children! Choosing the photographer and videographer, package, style of imagery and more are all things that you need to think about.

Guests
One of the key tasks that will closely affect the overall cost of the wedding (and the number of presents you receive!) is determining the guest list. There are however three potential guest lists to determine. First, those who are to be invited to the Engagement Party (should you choose to have one), second, those who will be invited to the Service and Reception, and finally those who are to be invited to the Evening Reception. Relatives may have strong opinions that differ from yours on this, so be prepared for a bumpy ride!

Stag and Hen Nights

The Stag and Hen nights, whilst usually organised by the Best Man and Chief Bridesmaid respectively, will sometimes require some input. Possible dates and activities (thats right, you dont just have to get plastered you can actually do something a little different!) should be mentioned to the organisers in advance to help them sort things out.

The Wedding Cake

The Wedding Cake is the traditional cake served at the end of the Wedding Day to all guests. The image of a three tiered cake decorated in white icing still is popular, but with modern utensils, equipment and ingredients, if you employ a skilled cake-maker your cakes design is only limited by your imagination.

Transport
Normally, there are three separate groups to cater for when hiring vehicles for the Wedding transport. You and your father should arrive at the wedding venue in one car. Your mother, the bridesmaids and other members of the bridal party travel in a separate car, with the groom, the best man and grooms men in a third. Sometimes more than two vehicles are needed to carry the bridesmaids and the grooms party (albeit with some jigging about of passengers if the Reception venue is different to that of the Service). Previously vintage cars or classy cars were the mainstay of the Wedding transport, but these days a glittering Rolls, horse and carriages,a helicopter, a red hot Ferrari, perhaps a boat, a plane, Tuk Tuks or even Combine Harvesters are being used.

26

www.signatureweddings.co.ke

SIGNATURE PLANNING

Bridesmaids Outfits
The bridesmaids outfits will often, but not always, match in colour but perhaps vary in design to accommodate the varying ages and sizes. Aside from choosing a colour you like, youll want to pick one that fits the tone of the ceremony: elegant, refined, causal, religious, etc. Youll also want to choose a colour that flatters the bridesmaids. The outfits can be hired, bought or designed from scratch, all of which are perfectly acceptable as long as the Bride is still the star of the show!

Stationery
Invites, thank-you cards, orders of service, menus, place-cards, not to mention the writing and proofing of them, are all part of the stationery that you will need to sort out. A consistent theme and style will usually run across all of the stationery items and be closely linked to the style and theme of your wedding.

The Honeymoon
The honeymoon typically follows the Wedding Day and can involve anything from a 4 week worldwide cruise to a night in a hotel in a national park somewhere in Kenya. If you are going abroad, unless the flight/boat leaves the next day, you will also need to consider how to spend the time in between the wedding and the honeymoon.

Gifts
Gifts need to be arranged on three different fronts. First (and most importantly!) you need to sort out gifts for yourself and establish a gift list. Second, you need to determine what you will purchase for members of the Wedding Party as a token of thanks for their assistance. Finally, you may also choose to purchase small gifts for your guests to accompany the traditional sweet-based favours teddy bears for the younger guests, a lottery ticket for those a little older perhaps.

Where did theWedding Traditions originate from?

Favors
Today Kenyan weddings seem to borrow a lot of things from the western culture when it comes to the ceremony and way of doing things during the wedding day. Have you ever wondered why the bride stands to the left of the groom, or why the wedding ring is worn on the left hand? The origins and meaning behind some of our most cherished wedding traditions may surprise you.

Tossing The Bouquet

ossing the bouquet is a tradition that stems from England. Women used to try to rip pieces of the brides dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. Today the bouquet is tossed to single women with the belief that whoever catches it will be the next to marry.

he custom of giving guests wedding favors as something by which to remember the wedding day has existed for hundreds of years. In modern times, the most popular favors appear to be the gift of five sugar-coated almonds to each guest... representative of health, wealth, fertility, happiness and a long-life.

Giving Away The Bride

he tradition of the father giving away his daughter has its roots in the days of arranged marriages. Daughters in those times were considered their fathers property. It was the fathers right to give his child to the groom, usually for a price. Today a father giving away his daughter is a symbol of his blessing of the marriage.

28

The Wedding Ring

he wedding ring has been worn on the fourth finger of the left hand since Roman times. The Romans believed that the vein in that finger runs directly to the heart. The wedding ring is a never-ending circle, which symbolizes everlasting love.

SIGNATURE TRADITIONS

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Something old represents the brides link to her family and the past. The bride may choose to wear a piece of family jewellery or her mother or grandmothers wedding gown. Something new represents hope for good fortune and success in the future. The bride often chooses the wedding gown to represent the new item. Something borrowed usually comes from a happily married woman and is thought to lend some of her good fortune and joy to the new bride.

Best Man
n ancient times, men would often capture women in order to make them their brides. A man would take along his strongest and most trusted friend in order to help him fight any resistance from the chosen ladys family or even the challenges of other men who might have designs on the captured woman. Thus, this friend was considered to be the best man among the prospective suitors acquaintances. The best man accompanied the groom up the aisle so he would be at hand to defend the bride.

Bridesmaids

he tradition of a bridal party has been an established custom for many centuries. For many years, the purpose of a bridal party was to fool evil spirits. The brides friends, richly dressed in a similar fashion to the bride, were thought to cause confusion among any malignant presences that might be lurking. During Saxon times in England, the chief bridesmaid was particularly responsible for the making of the bridal wreath, the decorations for the bridal feast and for dressing the bride. Today, the major function of bridesmaids is to support and assist the bride during any stressful times during the course of the wedding.

Best Man
It is an honour to be chosen as best man and it is therefore important that you know what your role is ON THE WEDDING DAY
Help the groom get ready and give him some last words of encouragement. Make sure the groom arrives at the wedding ceremony well in advance. During the ceremony, the best man stands at the altar with the groom, and will provide him with the brides wedding band for the exchange of rings (if there is a ring bearer, the best man should look after him to make sure no rings are lost). Sign the marriage license as a witness after the ceremony, along with the maid of honour. At the ceremony, assist with anything that needs done. Escort the chief bridesmaid from the service. At the reception, help with any problems that any guests might have, and make sure that you take responsibility for any gifts or cards that guests have brought with them for the bride and groom. At the reception, the best man typically gives the first toast: This should be short, sweet and to the point. Dance with the chief bridesmaid during the first dance Once the party gets started, the best man can act as one of many hosts. He should be a gentleman and ask the bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, and other female guests to dance. He should circulate, introduce himself to guests and check in on the bride and groom to make sure things are running smoothly. Be on hand to help with anything they might not have thought of, whether its safeguarding money given to them during the reception or fetching cocktails for elderly relatives. Drive the couple to the wedding-night hotel or airport after the reception. If you perform this service, youll need to stay sober throughout the reception. If you have a feeling this may not be possible, hire a limo to drive the couple into the sunset. Give the couple a wedding present.

BEFORE THE WEDDING

Help the bride and groom with any planning they need done prior to the wedding. Arrange the stag / bachelor party and make sure the groom returns in one piece! Attend the rehearsal with the bride and groom and all the other attendants. This is his chance to figure out how youre supposed to walk down that aisle. The best man should attend the rehearsal dinner. This is often the time for many speeches: The best man can kick off the night with a toast and organize other guests who would like to express their well wishes. On the day before the wedding, collect the wedding attire and make sure that everything fits for each of the wedding party members. Look after the wedding rings until the service. If the groom gets overwhelmed with wedding details (or is overwhelmed merely listening to the brides to-do lists), the best man should be around to lend a sympathetic ear.

Do It Yourself - Unity Candles

Unity candles or wedding unity candles are a symbolic representation of the newfound love and unity that you and your spouse have found in one another, a bond that will last a lifetime, which is also how these candles got their name to begin with. When a couple lights these candles at the altar after they have said their vows, when they light these candles together as one, that is the sign that from then on they are one with each other till death do them a part, and that is part of what makes the ceremony such a beautiful one to watch for all the attending guests.

Step 1:
Does the idea of a paper unity candle with your own personalized message on it sound appealing? Is the price tag of a personalized unity candle set not so appealing? Then check out this project for a really easy (and lovely) way to make your candle special. Below you will find a step by step tutorial showing you how to do just that. Done months in advance, and made to match your theme or express the words in your heart. The paper can even be removed and the candle used again and again for other decorative purposes.

You will need 1. Embossed paper (5/- each from office mart, Kenyatta Avenue, Nairobi) 2. 1 pillar candle (150/- from the consolatta shop at the consolatta church, Westlands, Nairobi ) 3. 2 dinner candles (25/- each, Nakumatt supermarket) 4. 2 colour ribbon, 1 meter each (10/- per meter, river road) 5. Ruler (10/- from any bookshop) 6. Pencil (5/- from local shop) 7. Super Glue (25/- at the local shop) 8. Scissors (from 45/-)

Step 2: Step 3: Step 5: Step 7:
Cut off the ribbon size you need for the top and bottom part of the candle. Take the 1st colour ribbon and wrap around the candle at the top and at the bottom. Secure with glue at the back of the candle. (The back should be where you glued the embossed paper together)

SIGNATURE INSPIRATIONS

Decide on the message you would like to include on your candle. Arrange it in your word processor with the spacing, alignment and font that you would like. Print the message on the embossed paper. When printing, make sure that you print the paper as Landscape, so it comes out the wide way.

Measure the dimensions of your pillar candle to help you decide how much of the embossed paper you will need to go round the candle. When youve decided how much youd like to trim off of the embossed paper, use your pencil to mark the paper before cutting. A straight edge is important.

Step 6:

Ask any woman and shell most likely tell you how shes been planning her special day for as long as she can remember. Unfortunately, once the planning begins, many brides find out that a few barriers stand between the dream and the reality. The cost of creating a dream wedding for one thing, as well as finding the time to make all of the endless arrangements. The average bride will spend a year of headaches trying to find a way to bring her fantasy to fruition, compromising on many points, only to find herself a frazzled sobbing mess on her big day because the wrong shirt came for the tuxes or someone dropped the cake on the way in. Then when the last guest leaves and the honeymoon is just a memory she regrets that she didnt really enjoy the most precious and wonderful day in her life because instead her vision ended up consumed by chaos. Not that long ago, wedding planners were thought of as a luxury to be used mainly by the elite. Not so any more.

What can a wedding planner do for you?

The list is long but here are a few of the duties you can expect: Help you to create the type of wedding you want. With that knowledge youll be able to pick your venue, vendors, colour scheme, theme, music, etc. Help you create a budget sheet and keep track of where your money is going and how much you still owe. Help keep you on your budget and not go over...too much!! Suggest vendors that fit your budget and ideas. Make a wedding planning schedule so that you know what youve done and what still needs to be done. In most cases a wedding planner can save you money because of their connection in the industry. Take care of any emergencies that arise. Create a wedding day schedule.

So who exactly is a wedding planner?

She (or he) is a specialist who plans weddings, or assists in the planning of weddings, on a professional basis. A wedding planner does not take over the planning of your wedding for you (unless, of course, you want her to), but rather, she/he advises you and assists you so that you have the all the information you need for the most spectacular wedding possible on a budget you can afford, and then you make all the final decisions.

What type of packages do the wedding planners have?

Full Planning Package - This Package offers wedding planning and event supervision from beginning to end. Partial Planning Package - This package is for the bride who may have already completed part of her planning and needs less help than a Full Package, but more than the Rehearsal and Wedding Day Package - This package is for the bride who has researched and picked her own vendors and made all her own arrangements, but needs someone to make her wedding day run smoothly. A la carte Services (loosely translated to having unlimited choices, with a separate price for each service). This package is for brides who want only one item handled by the planner. Could be you need stumped on invitations? You need the planner to look everywhere for that perfect band, find the perfect dress for you or get that horse drawn carriage. Many planners offer a la carte services to suit your specific needs. Ask the Expert Package - This package is for the bride, that doesnt know where to start or has made her own plans, believes she has everything handled, but would like an expert to go over everything with her. 67

What does a wedding planner Charge?

Wedding planners can charge 3 different ways and you will have to ask yours how they work out their prices: by a percentage of the total cost of your wedding, by the hour; or A flat fee.

Wedding planners contract How do you find a good wedding planner?

s with all other wedding vendors, word of mouth is always good, bridal shows or ask other wedding vendors about wedding planners that theyve seen at other weddings. Call first and see if you like them over the phone. If you dont then dont bother wasting time with the appointment. A professional wedding planner will have taken a wedding coordinator /wedding planner course and have a diploma or certificate to show for it. Call the organization on the certificate to make sure that it exists. Is the wedding planner organized? Do you feel comfortable with them? Are they friendly? Do they have a website where you can learn more about them? Are they computer literate? Do they know their stuff? Do they have any references? How long have they been in business? Are they within your budget? Do they have another job or do they plan weddings full time? If you like them and the answers you get, great...if not go elsewhere. Make appointments to meet at least 2 wedding planners. Never choose the first wedding planner you meet, you need to compare.

f you are only going to see a wedding planner for planning lessons then you will probably just get a bill. It is impossible to have all details on a wedding planners contract, for the simple fact that they are dealing will all aspects of your wedding day and have many duties. The contract should at least have the following: How the wedding planner charges (percentage, flat fee, hourly). How many meetings will there be and if the wedding planner will visit vendors with you? A service description. The total cost of their services. Your contact information. Your wedding date. Yours and their signature. The amount deposited and still owing, and the due date for last payment. Cancellation policy (if you cancel). No show policy for the wedding planner.

Kikuyu marriage traditions

uring the ancient times, prospective couples used to meet and court during climatic seasonal activities such as during planting or harvesting times. Once a man met a prospective woman, he declared his intent. This would be followed by arrangements on a date where the groom visits the brides home. In modern times, the first visit is attended by the grooms and his age mates or friends, which is then followed by Kuhanda Ithigi.

n this day, the grooms family was told the requirements that they needed to fulfill before the brides family consents to their daughter being married off to the grooms family. A lot of discussions take place regarding the dowry items and their corresponding values. If the grooms family had come prepared, they would give whatever they had to the custodian of the brides family/clan. At this juncture, the grooms family will acknowledge the requirements stipulated by the brides clan. Another will then be scheduled where the grooms family will come to pay the dowry based on all what had been requested. In this day, they will also formally request for a ngurario.

Ngurario
gurario is kikuyu equivalent for wedding. Once the family has complied, they arrange for another date for the occasion called ngurario. This ceremony was meant to bind two families together using a joyful combination of song, dance and romantic comedy fueled of course by plenty to eat and drink. Due to the current socio economic dynamics, the 4 events can be condensed into 2 or 3 days but not less than 2. For example you cant get to know the family, pay dowry and ngurario on the same day. However, you can know the family and get to be notified on dowry requirements on the same day. Then on the second day, pay dowry and have ngurario on the same day with proper arrangements in place on the exemptions. The steps above were relevant and were meant to protect and prevent the groom from seeing the bride as a commodity to be bought out. During the ngurario, a ceremony known as gutinia kiande would take place. gutinia kiande is symbolic ceremony for binding the couple and was assumed that after the ceremony, the woman would never leave her matrimonial home and that her parents would never accept her back.

SIGNATURE TRADITIONS

Kamba marrige traditions

When a man meets a woman, this is followed by a considerable period of time, normally more than 6 months. Depending on the level of commitment, either or both of the parties can inform a relative or a close friend of what is going on. When they are ready to commit, usually the fianc will inform his parents, either directly or through an uncle and the family takes it from there.

Initial Visit (Kuoka)

Proposal/Engagement

he man proposes to the woman either publicly or privately. As is the case today, the man gives the woman an engagement ring. It is in the initial visit that the engagement is made public.

his is the first step towards marriage. An uncle or parent of the man will contact one of the womans uncles or any other close relative and arrange to visit the womans home. This visit is called kuoka. A delegation of 5 to 10 people is involved although more people can be involved depending on the accessibility and availability of the mans relatives. The womans relatives will host the delegation. The visitors usually bring presents and any produce depicting the agricultural activity in their region.

t this visit, the mans relatives will seek to clarify that one of their own intends to marry from the family. If an agreement is reached, bride price and other requirements that need to be fulfilled will be expressed by the womans relatives. There is usually haggling and negotiation but once all has been agreed, it is documented. The delegation now strategizes on how it will settle the bride price and communicates the same to the womans parents through their appointed spokesperson.

Second Visit (Mithoko)

Pre-Wedding (Mathaa)
his is a small ceremony arranged for either the man or the woman. The main theme is to prepare them for marriage life by giving them gifts which they can use to prepare for the wedding. So in this ceremony, the womans and mans parents came and give their advice and presents. The engagement is also made public. If a pre-wedding is not arranged, the presents will be given at the wedding ceremony.

uring the second visit, the mans relation will go to the womans home and prepare a meal for them. Alternatively, the mans kin can decide to pay the womans kin to do the cooking. Whichever way, the mans relatives are the hosts in the womans home. In this visit, part or all of the bride price is paid. It is important to note that there is no end to payment of bride price and this is a life time commitment. Presents are also exchanged. If in agreement, the couple to be are allowed to go on with wedding preparations. If the bride price has not been settled fully, subsequent visits will follow the same approach.

Kutaiwa
Kutaiwa means to be advised. This is usually a small delegation that takes some presents to the womans parents. The woman and the man are given advice on how to conduct themselves in married life by an assembled panel of elders. At this event, the woman is informed that now she belongs to the mans lineage and should respect them. Once this is concluded, the pair is free to wed.

Caroline & Abraham

ABRAHAM MAKUTWA HER NAME: CAROLINE MATISYA WEDDING DATE: 5TH SEPTEMBER

THE MEETING
We met in church NPC Buruburu. Abraham was a member of the church and so was I. We fellowshipped in the choir together with his cousin Miriam, who is my best friend, and she did the honors of introducing us. We started out as friends for a year and as the year came to an end we started dating.

THE PROPOSAL
We had gone out for lunch, something we did regularly, but this time round the lunch ended on a very different note than the ones we had before. He took me to a Chinese restaurant in town and after we had enjoyed the lovely lunch, he popped the question.

SIGNATURE WEDDINGS

WHEN DID YOU START PLANNING THE WEDDING?

We started the entire plan a year before the set date. We opened a joint account and started saving up for the wedding and we also talked to our close friends early enough who also made their contribution in good time.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR COLORS AND WHAT WERE YOUR THEME COLORS?
I decided to go with Lilac because its a cool and calm color.

TELL US ABOUT THE PLANNING:

Well for me the most challenging bit of planning my wedding was the fact that the wedding was to happen in a land that was foreign to me. My wedding venue was at Nakuru, a place where I wasnt really used to. Gathering of the entire bridal party and getting them to go for measurement and fittings for their clothes was not an easy job to do, but with time things got better. Not getting support from the people you expected to get most support from was another thing that I really struggled with and also choosing the right best couple for us, but with Gods guidance we made the right choice. Apart form the many challenges we faced, I believe that the savings account we opened a year prior to the wedding day really helped us out when planning and budgeting for the whole day.

ADVICE TO OTHER BRIDES:

The secret to as stress free planning period is, early planning. Once you do this, you will have an easy time organizing everything into place and stress will be very minimal. Ensure that you delegate each and every item of the day to your trusted friends as the BIG day draws nearer, so that the burden is off you on the BIG day.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU MET.

James and I met in 2005 when I joined the company where he worked. Although I left the company six months down the line, I knew he was the one for me and we continued seeing each other. I prayed about it and there was so much peace thats how I knew he was the one that God kept for me.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

We went out for a movie and a dinner date. While we were still on our date we began talking and one thing led to another and the next thing I knew, I was saying yes to his proposal on us getting married. I was so excited I couldnt stop blushing the entire evening. After the proposal he came home to meet my family.

WHEN DID YOU START PLANNING THE WEDDING?

I had started planning the whole wedding in my head from the day James proposed. I knew what I wanted for my big day, months before I started meeting the vendors. I started going out to meet the vendors 4 months to the wedding.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

There are so many but I think the main one was when we were exchanging our vows, I felt like we were the only two people in the world at that moment in time. Listening to the Band 360 performing and Cucu Nyakairu (a kikuyu comedian) entertaining the guests were also moments I still remember fondly.

WHAT WERE YOUR WEDDING COLORS AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?
Our wedding colors were orange and gold. We decided on orange as it is a warm color.

TELL US ABOUT THE PLANNING:

I started the real planning 4 months before the wedding it was so hectic for me because most of the time I was all alone, running up and down all over Nairobi looking for things. James helped with all the big decisions regarding the vendors. I had attended several bridal shows to scout for vendors and get their contacts details beforehand. This helped me so much as I managed to do so much within the little time I had left before my wedding date.

TELL US ABOUT THE HONEYMOON

My honeymoon was a sweet surprise from James. He planned all the details perfectly and still managed to keep it a secret from me. We went to the coast and I really enjoyed every minute we spent there together.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO BRIDES PLANNING THEIR WEDDING?

Always follow your dreams and heart and do what you think is right to ensure you have the wedding you have always dreamt about. The wedding is about you and your fianc and what you want on your big day. Make sure you dont compromise your big day by allowing others to dictate to you what they would like to see at your wedding. I would also advise brides-to-be to start planning earlier because its not easy to get a nice venue and suppliers. Try and book one year before the wedding.

WEDDING QUOTE:
To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us apart.. is a commitment and a covenant that should not be broken.

10 ways to save money on your wedding day

Youve dreamt of your wedding day for ever, but how long have you been saving your shillings for the big day? Not to worry, here are 10 ways to help keepbyour budget in line, while still having the wedding of your dreams.

1
3
84

Pick an off or time

There are just not enough Saturdays in the week! Try working with a different day of the week - Friday, Sundays? How about a Thursday or Monday? Religious obligations may steer you in one directions or another, but moving away from a Saturday affair will give you extra money to spurge for an awesome honeymoon.

Pick an off month

Sure, everyone dreams of being a February Bride ( Valentines ), but a January or July bride will save a lot more money. By working off months , many vendors (including caterers and musicians) will be a lot more flexible with their pricing. So, you may still have your Saturday wedding in July, it just may need to be indoors because of the cold

Choose a site that comes with everything

You may think using a raw space, or even your own backyard will save you money, but in reality, the cost of all the rentals ( tents, tables, chairs, linens, china etc) will set you behind ... never mind the additional stress headaches!

4
5

Scale back on flowers

Work with your florist from what is in season, rather than what is not... Re-use flowers from the ceremony at the reception for centerpieces, or around the cake.

Cut the guest list

How many long distance relatives and long ago friends do you need to invite? Share your day with those nearest and dearest to you only. It will be more meaningful and you may actually have a chance to mingle with all the guests.

www.signatureweddings.co.ke

SIGNATURE PLANNING

Factor in transport cost

When comparing he cost of venues, factor in the cost of getting yourself (and possibly your guests) from one to other. It may end up cheaper opting for a pricier venue where you can have both the ceremony and the reception, rather than pay for transport between a ceremony location and a reception location.

Never mention the W word

The simple mention of the W will generally increase the cost of most things by 2 or 3 times the nornal price. So where possible refrain from letting them know that it is your wedding. Call it a party or celebration, not until after you get a written quote should you mention the word wedding.

7
9

Dont go for obvious venues

While hotels or country clubs are an obvious choice for a reception; dont disregard church gardens, school grounds or company grounds. They can cost a fraction of big hotel prices, which are in to turn a hefty profit. Plus less obvious venue can still look as beautiful once you have decorated them.

Make your friends paparazzi for the day

Many of your guests will record the day for posterity, so why not ask them for copy of their photos and videos? Even though theyre not professional photographers and videographers, if they take enough shots, hopefully some of them will be good ones (just make sure you still do the formal poses though).

10

Use your friends skills

One of the best wedding reception ideas for saving money is to find out if any of your friends or relatives have special skills and ask them to provide you with services as a wedding gift. For example someone who is a chef may be able to make you a wedding cake, a hair dresser can do your hair or a photographer can take your wedding photographs.
