INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC

The logistics management is that part of Supply Chain Management that plans, implements and control the efficient, effective, forward, and reverse flow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers requirements. Software is used for logistics automation which helps the supply chain industry in automating the work flow as well as management of the system. This system is developed to deliver innovative, cutting-edge technology and transportation services. This warehouse management system transforms warehouse operations into an integrated logistics and business fulfillment. This system enables a company to take orders from multiple sources, process them in real time with mobile operations hence automating the billing processes, improving organizational efficiency with positive effect on the bottom line. Logistics management system provides much more organized dumping and transportation using new technologies. Fig: A closer view of Logistics

MODULES IN THE PROJECT

Module 1. LOGIN This module deals with the login by the end user. This uses Username and password information. Password is encrypted for security purposes. Module 2. COMPANY INFORMATION This offers the information of the company which is a customer of the logistics Industry. All details of the company (Name, Address, Monthly rent, Types of goods) are stored. Module 3. EMPLOYEE This module deals with the information of each employee working for the logistics industry (ID, DOJ, Designation, and Qualification etc.) Module 4. DISTRIBUTOR Distributor module seeks information of the distributors of logistics industry in various cities and areas. State and City interfaces are the integral parts of the distributor module. Module 5. TRANSPORT This is the module which deals with the actual transference of goods from warehouse to the destination. It includes vehicle and delivery_challan (Vehicle registrationchallan clearance from traffic police & enforcement branch of the transport Deptt.) interfaces in order to keep track of truthful delivery of goods. Module 6. WAREHOUSE This tends to seek information regarding the STOCK in the inventory and ITEM information (Information of the items to be transported coming into inventory from different companies). Module 7. ACCOUNTING This module stores the ORDER information of the items to be delivered to the customers i.e. distributors and INVOICE hence generated.

FRONT END (VB.NET)

The front-end is responsible for collecting input in various forms from the user and processing it to conform to a specification the back-end can use. Front end is a kind of interface between the user and the back-end. Front is an abstraction, simplifying the underlying component by providing a user-friendly interface while back-end simplifies development and separates maintenance. VB. Net is an object oriented computer programming language which is implemented on the .NET FRAMEWORK and it fulfills the most development needs. Microsoft implementation of Visual Basic.net is called Microsoft Visual Basic. .NET framework is a software framework that runs primarily on Microsoft windows. It includes a large library and supports several programming languages which allow language interoperability (each language can use code written in other languages). Programs written in .NET framework execute in a software environment known as Common Language Runtime (CLR). .NET frameworks base class library provides user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms and network communications. Its Design features include: Interoperability, Common Language Runtime Engine, Language Independence, Base class library, Simplified deployment, Security, Portability. Class library is divided into two parts: the base class library and framework class library. Base class library includes a small subset of the entire class library and is the core set of classes that serve as the basic API of the common language runtime. Framework class library is a superset of BCL classes and refers to the entire class library that ship with .NET framework. It includes an expanded set of libraries, including Windows Forms, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, Language integrated query. The purpose of the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) is to provide a language-neutral platform for application development and execution, including functions for Exception handling, Garbage Collection, security, and interoperability. The .NET Framework CLR frees the developer from the burden of managing memory (allocating and freeing up when done).

BACK END (ORACLE 9i)

The Oracle database (commonly referred to as Oracle RDBMS or simply oracle) is a relational database management system produced and marketed by Oracle Corporation. Oracles complete, open and integrated applications strategy helps customers transform their business-creating value and reducing cost and risk through: y y y The most complete portfolio of core business and industry applications. The most integrated applications, business intelligence and infrastructure solutions. Oracle technology network provides services and resources to help developers; DBAs and architects build, deploy, manage and optimize applications using Oracle products. Oracle is the worlds most complete, open and integrated business software and hardware Systems Company. The Oracle Database (commonly referred to as Oracle RDBMS or simply as Oracle) is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) produced and marketed by Oracle Corporation. Oracle advanced security improves configuration and management tools to simplify security management. It also provides new forms of network encryption to ensure the security of all protocols accessing database. Each user may have multiple account son different databases, requiring remembering passwords for each of the account. Users not only have many passwords but there are too many accounts for administrators to manage. The Oracle RDBMS stores data logically in the form of table spaces and physically in the form of data files ("data files").[5] Tables paces can contain various types of memory segments, such as Data Segments, Index Segments, etc. Segments in turn comprise one or more extents. Extents comprise groups of contiguous data blocks. Data blocks form the basic units of data storage. Oracle database management tracks its computer data storage with the help of information stored in the SYSTEM table space. The SYSTEM table space contains the data dictionary and often (by default) indexes and clusters. A data dictionary consists of a special collection of tables that contains information about all user-objects in the database.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The system basically deals with the suppliers, manufacturers, third party logistics and distributors providing information so that goods move faster through the system. It offers a strategic plan that ensures that the overall cost of delivering goods to customers is the lowest possible while maintaining the desired service level. It fulfills the following objectives: y y Transportation optimization tends to examine the flow and stocking of goods. Tactical storage and warehouse Warehouses are long term investments. It is the optimal storage arrangement for efficient retrieval and turnover of stocks. y Packing and Stuffing This is about knowing how items should be packed or stuffed so that capacity is well used. It is an essential cost-saver. y Operational Routing and Loading This refers to the activity of loading the goods for delivery and selecting proper route. Travel speeds along various types/zones of roads can be stipulated. The scheduled arrival and departure times for each stop can be worked out accurately. Routes can be generated dynamically. Managers can view over the web the progress of deliveries. y Vendor Managed Inventory It allows inventory to be optimized together with transportation. By knowing the product value as well as storage capacity at each site, routinely collecting information on consumption rate, current inventory levels, forecasted demand and status of shipments, the system can optimize the right quantities of replenishments to be sent at the right time to ensure that service levels are maintained while minimizing cost of inventory and transportation.

Logistics management system is all about having the right item in the right quantity at the right time at the right place for the right price in the right condition to the right customer. This system clearly tends to deal with: y y y y y y Inventory details (location and quantity of stock in warehouse). Supplier details Packaging details (what material to pack and how much to pack). Who acts as the distribution entity? Customers Mode of transportation.

FUTURE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

Current system deals with the logistics management taken road as the mode of transportation. By enabling a company to take orders from multiple sources, process them in real time with mobile, voice-directed operations and automating billing processes organizational efficiency will improve with positive effect on the bottom line. The system can be enhanced with further scope for other modes of transport such as air, rail and sea by putting in the modules such as freight & aviation module, freight & shipping module for air and sea respectively. Business logistics is a series of separate activities of functions which all fall under a business firms logistics umbrella: Customer service Demand forecasting Documentation flow Inter-plant movements Inventory management Order processing Packaging Parts and service support Plant and warehouse site selection Production scheduling The current system can be enhanced to track the information online for most couriers and carriers.
