Data and Computer Security (CSNB414/CSNB514) Lab I

This exercise is done at your own convenience - There is NO session in the lab ! We start our physical lab sessions with lab exercise 2 next week. Preliminary Remark / Hint: For our future labs, we will need specific software to navigate / explore / retrieve information about networks, hosts and nodes. This software (e.g. tcpdump, nmap, ethereal, nessus, dig, ping, traceroute, iptraf, ettercap, mtr, mail, telnet, ssh, etc.) is available as source code. In case you happen to have a Unix / Linux / GNU / *BSD system available, your task is to make sure that these programs are installed. If not, get them installed. In case you don't have such a system, and you don't want one installed on your harddisk, you can obtain a version that runs entirely from CDROM. Your task for this week is to get this CDROM and make sure you can start ('boot') a machine from this CDROM as described further down. Bring it next week ! It is highly recommended that you download the ISO-image KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso from ftp://metalab.uniten.edu.my/pub/ and burn it with your preferred CD-burner software. Before burning, it is recommended to check that the download is complete and not tampered with, using its hash (MD5-sum) available on the same site in the file KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso.md5. It should be 379e2f9712834c8cef3efa6912f30755 Your lecturer has no idea how perform this check on your Windows-PC, but if you use Linux, Unix, OSX or *BSD, just issue the command md5(sum) KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso Once this CD is toasted (it needs a 700MB CDR / CDRW), you can probably boot your PC with it. Simply press Enter at the boot: prompt. Or, try F2 for more options. Eventually you need to modify the boot sequence in the BIOS of your PC to boot from CDROM, or enter the Boot Menu before you can boot from CDROM instead of from harddisk. All PCs in the lab (BW-4-L15/L16) are set to boot from CDROM. If in doubt, try your new tool-CD in that lab. Get the help of your comrades in case of no-go and contact the lecturer if necessary. With this tool, a quite complete, independent Linux distribution (a derivative of Debian Linux/GNU), you will be able to run Linux and the programs required for the lab exercises from CD (only). For network connectivity you need a Network Interface Card (NIC) or a modem ('Win'modems will not work). Running KNOPPIX from CDROM will not affect your current harddisk installations. That is, if you have enough RAM (128MB) to run everything in memory. See http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html for details. In case of insufficient memory, you can still create a swap-file (virtual memory) on the harddisk. Refer to the CD, respectively the website and its forum. An informative review of KNOPPIX is available at http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=review-knoppix For the subsequent lab sessions, starting with Lab 2, you will have to bring this KNOPPIX-CD. Sharing will not be accepted. Make sure you have your own !
