International institutions like
Divya Yog Mandir Trust and
Patanjali Yogpeeth (Trust) are get-
ting love, support and blessings of
hundreds and thousands of people.
It is indeed a matter of great pride
to get associated with the Patanjali
Yog committee of this great institu-
tion and contribute for the welfare
of the society as a Yog teacher. But
it needs to be mentioned that a Yog
teacher should not have greed for
post and should be active even if a
person does not get the post because
you are involved with service to the
destitute and unhealthy people. You
are involving in creating a new his-
tory through this historical and spiri-
tual task of the 21
st
century and pi-
ous mission of improving the health
of people all over the world.
People with purity, humanity, na-
tionalistic feelings who are spiritual
and efficient have joined in this mis-
sion under the leadership of Patanjali
Yogpeeth. Everybody has to work
collectively in order to prevent even
a single death due to hunger, illness
and to raise the status of India in the
whole world. It is not an easy task
and hence every one of us has to be
aware, alert and active in order to
achieve this goal.
Revered Swami Ji Maharaj be-
lieves that all of us should be healthy
and self-dependent. He feels that it
is a sin to lead a diseased and de-
pendent life. Good health is our birth-
right and therefore we should all be
self-dependent with good health. We
have to stop the dependence on
medicines as all the diseases can be
fought out with the help of internal
strength. He invites everybody to
become dutiful towards self and the
nation through the medium of Yog
and pranayam and also inspire oth-
ers. People have to break the barri-
ers of caste and religion and blow
the trumpet of national spirit. Ac-
cording to Swami, Yog is a philoso-
phy of life and a complete medical
science. It is centuries old ancient
health building system propounded
by our sages and seers. Yog is the
medium of self-realization and self-
discipline. It is the supreme life style.
It is the one and only one medium to
relieve diseases and attain liberation.
It is the best way to increase our
productivity, creativity, quality and
positive attitude. There is no other
method as superior as Yog to serve
the nation and its people.
It is unfortunate that youth and
students of colleges and universities
are getting addicted to drugs and
other vices, which is ruining the
young generation. In this situation,
Swami Ramdev is doing a wonder-
ful work by arousing the hidden tal-
ents of the youth and involving their
energy in the development of the
nation through Yog. You all are in-
vited to associate in this pious mis-
sion as Yog teachers.
Swami Ji aims to make India an
ideal nation of this world. The role
of youth can play an important role
in this work. The energy, which is
being wasted in negative activities,
can be utilized in positive direction
through proper guidance. Yog will
indeed arouse immense power and
talent among the youth. Change and
development are possible only with
collective work. The dedicated Yog
teachers associated with Patanjali
Yog committee wake up in the wee
hours and conduct Yog classes cov-
ering a distance of 50 kilometers
everyday. They are organizing Yog
camps and helping the poor, needy
and diseased people reap the health
benefits. More than one lakh Yog
teachers of Patanjali Yog commit-
tee are providing spiritual, mental and
physical health to millions of people
through Yog and pranayam every-
day between 5 and 7 a.m by orga-
nizing Yog camps in public parks,
jails, military areas, various ashrams,
schools, institutions etc.
There are several families who
have been able to prevent division
through Yog. There are several bu-
reaucrats who admit that their of-
ficers and staff are becoming more
disciplined after taking part in Yog
camps. A large number of doctors,
engineers, administrative officers,
teachers, businessmen and scientists
are involved in service to mankind
through Yog.
Revered Swami Ji invited the
teachers to go back to villages and
rural areas during the National work-
shop organized by Patanjali Yog
committee at Yogagram. He ap-
pealed them to reestablish Indian
culture. Swami Ji asked every Yog
teacher to take a resolution for vis-
iting at least 51 villages and make
Yog teachers as his compensation
(Guru Dakshina).
Swami Ji Maharaj declared the
motherland service department and
Acharya Suman as the national co-
ordinator of this department. Dur-
ing the same occasion, Hetal Desai-
Gujarat, Seema Johar - Uttarakhand,
Shraddha Desai- Mumbai, Tapasi
Sen Gupta West Bengal, Sudha
Anil More- Maharashtra were de-
clared as regional co-ordinators.
The pious souls of the nation and
world have to come forward in or-
der to associate with this pious mis-
sion and get back the status of world
mentor.
I would like to convey heartiest
wishes to the countrymen and ev-
erybody associated with Divya Yog
Mandir (Trust) and Patanjali
Yogpeeth on the occasion of
Dashera and Deepawali.

YOGA WAS BENEFICIAL IN
REMOVING THE BLOCKAGE
IN THE HEART
Respected Swami Ji,
Namaste!
My husband Yogendranath
Modak (65 yrs) was suffering from
heart disease. The doctors in
Calcutta advised bypass surgery in
2007. We were not ready for the
surgery, and fortunately visited your
free yoga camp on the advice of a
well-wisher. There they suggested
to practice pranayam and consume
bottle gourd lauki juice. This helped
in loosing weight. Earlier my
husbands weight was 85 kg and now
it is 64 kg.
Now my husband is healthy and
completely free from blockages. He
has set an example for all the heart
patients. I am very thankful to you.
Yours sincerely,

BY-PASS SURGERY COULD BE
AVOIDED BY YOGA PRACTICE
Respected Swami Ji Maharaj!
Namaste
My name is Arvind Bala and I
am 55 years old. I am working in
Indian Olympic Association since
1976. I suffered from heart attack
on 22
nd
November 2004. I got all the
tests done and the results showed
that two of my arteries were blocked
up to 90% and 85%. I got the an-
giography done in Apollo Hospital.
On 11
th
January 2005 doctors sug-
gested by-pass surgery. I was de-
pressed and was not ready for the
surgery.
I had heard a lot about you and
watched your program on Astha
channel and was very impressed. I
started practicing Yoga. I recovered
within one and half years with regu-
lar practice of Yoga balanced diet
and bottle gourd juice. Doctors had
earlier suggested that I should take
medicines for heart attack through
out my life but now I have stopped
consuming the tablets since March
2007. I used to suffer from palpita-
tion after walking but now I am able
to climb the steps of even a five sto-
ried building. I will remain indebted
to you life long for giving me a
healthy life.
Yours truly,

PRANAYAM AND AYURVEDIC
MEDICINES CURED T.B.
Respected Swami Ji,
Namaste
I was suffering from tuberculo-
sis since July 2004. I had severe
cough, and blood in phlegm. I had
poor appetite along with fever. My
weight also reduced drastically. I
was on continuous medication for
almost three years but there was no
improvement. Only then I came to
know about Patanjali Yogpeeth. I
consulted doctor Sushant Mishra and
on his advice I started taking medi-
cines and practicing pranayam since
one year. Now my health has im-
proved. The appetite has improved,
my cough is under control, there is
no phlegm and fever has also re-
duced. I have gained ten kilos and
feel very healthy. Thank you very
much for giving me a new life.

PRANAYAM HELPS IN
CHRONIC DISEASES
Respected Swami Ji,
Namaste!
The monthly magazine Yog
Sandesh has become the means for
a healthy life. Swami Ji I was suf-
fering from mental illness since 16
yrs. In spite of my low monetary sta-
tus I had to buy medicines. I started
practicing pranayam, Yog and
watched your program on Astha
channel. There was good improve-
ment in my condition. I was also
suffering from hernia and diabetes.
I have become healthy and started
believing in myself with regular
practice of asana. Thanks a ton to
have started such revolution.
Yours truly,
Arun Bol Kute, c/o Bank of India,

under the ground and is a tube, it is used in
both wet and dry forms and hence known

Vaidya Saket Kumar
Patanjali Yogpeeth, Hardwar.
Gastric problem has become one of common prob-
lems like constipation and indigestion. This problem is
seen in people of any age group.
The prominent symptoms are bulging of the stom-
ach, pressure in the stomach and belches.
One of the main reasons is our eating habit. Swal-
lowing the food quickly, eating untimely meals, talking
while eating, drinking water in between the meals, con-
suming spicy food results in gastric trouble. Eating very
hot or very cold food items also results in gas forma-
tion. A person suffers from gastric problem if he does
not have mental peace and is irritated.
Natural medication:
To control gas one should have a regular check on
their food. Natural medication gives complete cure.
Take enema with lemon water and when the stom-
ach is thoroughly cleaned then put mud bandage on
the stomach and take hipbath.
Consume light food, which is easily digestible. Avoid
eating food, which causes gas.
Concentrate on the food and chew it properly. Take
fruits once a week.
Put wet mud on the stomach and tie it.
Put water on the backbone in such a way that it
slides down slowly and then massage the body.
Add lemon water to the black sand and apply gently
on the feet. Sprinkle water at regular intervals. Re-
move it after an hour. This helps in removing the
gas.
Medication through yoga:
Early morning after Kunjal kriya, practice few
yogasanas and then practice asana, which will strengthen
the stomach.
After the four navel exercises practice
Katichakrasana, Urdhvahasthotasana, Padhastasana,
Suptapavanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Vajrasana,
Mandookasana, Kurmasana, Mayurasana,
Bhujangasana and Ardhamatysendrasana.
In pranayam practice Bhastrika and Surya bhedi,
Agnisar and Naouli kriya, which has magical affect.

Both spring and winter season are considered to
be good from the viewpoint of health. The body is very
strong during this season. The days are short and nights
are long, which give proper rest to the body and also
helps in proper digestion of the food. The appetite in-
creases due to suitable climatic conditions. The diges-
tion improves and the food eaten in good quantity di-
gests easily. It is also not correct to eat dry food or to
remain hungry during this season. If the body does not
get sufficient fuel in the form of food then the digestive
fire destroys the nutritional fluids. This increases pol-
luted air in the body, which is full of cold and dry quali-
ties.
Suitable food
Oily, sweet, salty and sour food, nutritional elements
should be consumed during winter season. Such food
includes clarified butter, butter, oil, milk, kheer made with
rice and milk, horse bean, sugar candy, thickened milk,
cream, cold milk mixed with honey, sugar cane juice,
coarse meal halva, myrobalan and apple marmalade,
things made with dry fruits and horse bean, sweets etc.
Sprouted gram, Moong, horse bean, wheat and gram
chapatti, cornflakes, new rice, seasonal fruits, like apple,
myrobalan, orange etc. vegetables like Sespedula, cau-
liflower, tube, ripe red tomatoes, carrot, beans, green
peas, spinach, bathua, fenugreek, green leafy vegetables,
dry ginger, hot water and hot food is healthy and nutri-
tious.
Suitable daily routine
It is also necessary to follow suitable daily routine
along with diet. First of all the mind should be cheerful.
Wake before sunrise and finish the morning chores, bath
etc and go for morning walk in fresh air. It is better to
walk briskly depending on the body capacity. Take rest
and practice some light asanas and Yog. Exercise has
special importance in this season. It keeps the body
strong and fit. It helps in the proper digestion of food.
Body massage, body pack made with turmeric and oil
massage on head is very beneficial. Body massage with
rapeseed oil keeps the skin disease free and healthy. It
prevents boils and wounds. Add camphor in oil and
massage the body to relieve gout and joint pain. Apply
body pack after massage. Exercise can be done after
body massage also.
There are chances of suffering from cold, fever,
pneumonia etc. due to cold. The skin becomes dry and
the person can also suffer from cough, respiratory
trouble, gout, joint pain, itching etc. therefore it is nec-
essary to protect from cold wind. It is also advisable to
sleep in warm place and to wear woolen clothes, and
cover the body with blankets, quilts at the time of sleep-
ing. The vehicle and bed should be covered properly.
Massage the body with Agar powder. Sunbath is very
beneficial. The body should be exposed to sun on back-
side and fire should be taken from the front. Room heater
etc. should be used to make the room warm. Drink milk
at bedtime.

A practitioner, who is aware of all the exercises
and practices them, reaps the benefits of good health.
Usually people exercise two to three days regularly and
do not follow it regularly afterwards. They have a no-
tion that practicing in this manner is also effective. Fol-
lowing are the tips for exercise:
1) 20-25 minutes of exercise daily is enough to main-
tain good health. Take out time for exercise when-
ever you are free. Morning time is ideal for exer-
cises.
2) The energy level in the mans body keeps varying,
due to which his mental moods change. Avoid ex-
ercise during emotional disturbance.
3) Regular practice of exercise sometimes results to
tiredness. Sometimes a person may feel weak to
continuing the same routine the next day. Avoid
forceful exercise. Sleep adequately. Exercising dur-
ing tiredness is meaningless. Exercise only when
the body is ready and healthy.
4) A man needs healthy and balanced diet. Because a
body cannot function properly without nutritional
diet. Take adequate amount of fruits, vegetables,
and carbohydrate rich food if you are exercising
daily. This keeps the energy level balanced. Pro-
teins are essential for functioning of the muscles.
Take milk and cereals for rich proteins.
5) Sometimes people suffer from joint pains and body
aches due to exercises. Avoid exercise in this con-
dition, light exercise and walking is recommended.
The person has to take proper care during exercise
and keep the body stiff. Avoid exercise if suffering
from body pains, restlessness, tiredness or loss of
appetite.
6) Avoid exercising at the same place everyday. Ex-
ercise in open air, lawn or with light music. Wear
loose and comfortable clothes for exercise.
7) Be positive. You should always feel that exercise
enhances beauty. You should feel that your body is
getting toned. This positive thinking will help in mo-
tivating and reduces tiredness.
8) In this busy life it is not possible to exercise daily. If
you miss one or two days in between there is noth-
ing to worry. Do it with happiness whenever pos-
sible.
9) Exercise is not a magic wand, which will bring re-
sults over night. It takes approximately two to three
weeks. Include exercise in your daily routine for
positive result.
10) 30-45 minutes of exercise a week gives positive
result.

Dr. Vipul Bhatt
Patanjali Yogpeeth, Hardwar.
Our body generates energy through out the day irrespective of the
work we do. The heart beats continuously and in this process the waste
gets accumulated. All these processes require energy. This energy is
obtained from the food we eat. The food with the help of oxygen con-
verts into carbohydrates and water. The energy extracted from the food
is used for all the functions of the body.
The food plays an important role in the life of a human being whether
he is an adult or a child. There is a continuous degeneration, wear and
tear of the cells in the body. In a certain period the old cells degenerates
and new cells are formed.
In short we can say that the development is of two types the
change in the shape of the body and degeneration of the cells. In a child
we observe the first type of development whereas in adults we observe
the second type of development. This is one of the reasons why chil-
dren need more food for developing. They need healthy food to enrich
their growth. We also observe that children consume more food than
the adults. A four-year-old kid who weighs ten to eleven kilos eats more
than an adult. A child needs essential nutrients, which will help him in his
growth. A qualitative and quantitative diet has to be maintained.
The nutrients available in the food react with the enzymes in the
development of the body. What does food mean basically? The nutri-
ents in the food can be divided into six groups.
1) Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, enzymes and water. Starch
is found in carbohydrates and glucose is available in sugar. Thou-
sands of glucose atoms make one atom of starch. The starch and
sugar are digested in the intestines and absorbed or metabolized in
the body, but little quantity of carbohydrates is left without absorp-
tion. Such type of carbohydrates is found in the cells of the plants.
The undigested food is known as fiber, which contains cellulose,
hemicelluloses and pectin. There is another mineral called lignin,
which is not a carbohydrate but is available in the undigested food

material.
One atom of protein contains thousands of amino
acids. There are 20 types of amino acids. As we
make several thousands of words and sentences with
alphabets similarly out of 20 amino acids there are
nine amino acids, which our body cannot produce.
They are known as essential amino acids. These
amino acids are essential for the development of the
body. The quantity and ratio has to be maintained.
Even though the quantity of amino acids may be more
but they might not be able to contribute for the de-
velopment of body. The structure of protein is de-
pendent on these amino acids. The healthy protein
is one, which contains all the essential amino acids.
All the proteins, which are useful for the develop-
ment of human body, are the ones, which almost
match with animal proteins. But they are different
than that of plants. This is the reason the proteins of
animals are richer than humans. To acquire plant
protein one need not consume meat. Vegetarians can
obtain this protein through milk and curd. The healthy
protein can be obtained from cereals also. However
in food grains and cereals amino acids are available
but not up to the requirement of human body. That is
the reason why one should consume balanced and
nutritional diet.
From the ancient times in northern India people con-
sume cereals and grains, south Indians consume
Sambar rice, Chinese prefer soybean and rice and
northern Americans consume maize and cereals.
Fats are available in oil, butter and ghee. Fats in-
crease the taste of the food and provide rich satis-
faction. Due to consumption of high quantity of clari-
fied butter a person feels that the stomach is always
full. Due to fat content in the stomach the food
reaches the intestines slowly.
The food we consume is not rich in vitamins. We
require low quantity of vitamins. Vitamins do not give
out energy but are useful like other minerals car-
bohydrates, proteins, and fats. There are vitamins
namely A B C D K. They existed much before we
knew their chemical formula. We know the atomic
structure and their new names today but we know
them by their old names.
Unlike vitamins minerals do not give out energy but
they are very important. They play a vital role in the
development of the body. For example iron is essen-
tial in the formation of red blood cells and calcium is
useful in strengthening the teeth. Iodine is useful for
the function of thyroid glands. Lack of iodine results
in improper functioning of the thyroid glands. In few
places where iodine is less people suffer from glan-
dular problem and people use iodized salt. Floride is
also useful in the development of bones and teeth.
Fluoride content should be balanced, fluoride is found
in plenty in our country but in Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan,
Harayana the fluoride content is more. That is why
toothpaste-containing fluoride is not required in our
country. Places where fluoride content is more, food
rich in calcium such as green vegetables, lemon, or-
ange, myrobalan, should be consumed in balance.
Our body contains 2/3 parts of water. Water is one
of the most essential minerals for the body. If water
level in the body is reduced the urine content in the
body also reduces and changes it into yellow colour.
If the water content is more then the urine content
is also more and is light yellow in colour. Consump-
tion of water is good for health. Possibility of stone
formation increases if the urine is thickened. The
virus also increases in the urine and there is possibil-
ity of infection. In short we can say that water is
also an essential mineral. And should be consumed
in more quantity. It depends upon the amount of
persipiration, season and exercises.

Children are very naughty in
their childhood. They like to
play and make fun all
the time. Children
should be given
extra care during
this period to en-
sure proper growth.
The physical, psychologi-
cal and sociological aspects should
be taken care off. If the childs
food habits are not given proper
attention then it will give adverse
effect later. The children should
be given proper diet and told about
the importance of exercise. It is
the duty of the parents to take care
of the children, their health and
teach them good habits.
Usually a boy needs 2640
calories per day. Whereas, a girl
requires only 2060 calories per
day. In the same way a boy needs
78 grams of protein but a girl
needs only 63 grams of protein.
A boy requires 500 grams of mag-
nesium and calcium per day but
girl needs more iron than a boy.
Nutritious food is essential for
the growth of a child. However

able in such places is

excess nutrition more than the re-
quired quantity gives adverse action.
A balanced diet should be followed
for the proper development.
If a 10 to 12 year child is feeling
lazy or he is dull we can say that he
or she is suffering from mental or
physical illness. The following symp-
toms can be observed:
Child is tired
Child is short tempered
Indigestion
Lack of interested in studies
Forgetful nature
Daydreamer
Irritated
Not able to make new friends or
not able to keep up his old friend-
ship
Restlessness
Academic record is being af-
fected
These symptoms clearly show
that he or she is not receiving a bal-
anced diet.
Aneamia in children
Children suffering from aneamia
get tired frequently. This happens
due to iron deficiency. Sometimes the
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 16

children also get mentally af-
fected if they are unhealthy. To avoid
aneamia the child should be given
leafy vegetables. They should be
given dry fruits, which contain ad-
equate iron quantity.
Obesity
This is a common problem in the
children nowadays. This can be con-
trolled with the help of balanced diet.
Children should be given fibrous food,
which is available in vegetables and
fruits. Avoid excessive intake of
sugar in food. Fruits can be given in
place of snacks. Curd is also benefi-
cial. Children should be given healthy
food grains. The child should be
given home made food. Green veg-
etables and one fruit per day should
be consumed. If you feel that your
child is under weight he or she needs
be given products made of sugar or
cold drinks. The child should have
proper breakfast, lunch and dinner
at regular timings. Child should be
given balanced breakfast and nutri-
tious lunch. Avoid giving chowmine,
samosa, burger and other junk food.
If the child is obese then he or she
should be made to play as much as
possible. The child should indulge in
physical exercise. Avoid oily stuff,
cookies, cake, pastry and soft drinks.
Underweight Children:
Many children are underweight
in proportion to their height. Usually
children eat less than required which
makes the parents worried. The par-
ents should know the choice of their
children and prepare it. The children
should be given food affectionately.
This will result in good health and
increase their weight.
Toothache:
Usually children complain of
toothache and other problems. This
is due to the consumption of choco-
lates and toffees. They should al-
ways brush their teeth before going
to bed. Children should be given
very less quantity of sugar.
Explain the importance of
regular food habits:
Nowadays children prefer to go
out for picnics, birthday parties, and
shopping malls. The food available
in such places is not hygienic. The
parents should take proper care at
such places. Avoid watching televi-
sion while eating. The child learns
from elders, so the elders should
practice eating healthy and nutritious
food. Children should be allowed to
choose their food. If the child is not
interested in eating apple he or she
should be given banana. They should
be taught about the healthy food
habits.
One thing everybody should re-
member is that child should not be
directly denied for any food item.
This makes the child crave for that
particular food item. The child should
be made to understand with love
about the ill effects of the food items,
which are not good for health.
Children should be given
healthy food grains. The
child should be given home
made food. Green veg-
etables and one fruit per
day should be consumed. If
you feel that your child is
under weight he or she
needs be given products
made of sugar or cold
drinks. The child should
have proper breakfast,
lunch and dinner at regu-
lar timings. Child should
be given balanced break-
fast and nutritious lunch.
Avoid giving chowmine,
samosa, burger and other
junk food. If the child is
obese then he or she should
be made to play as much as
possible. The child should
indulge in physical exer-
cise. Avoid oily stuff, cook-
ies, cake, pastry and soft
drinks.

A little change in your daily rou-
tine can make you feel mentally and
physically beautiful. Though beauty
is said to be Gods gift, it can be ac-
quired by following few tips. Initially
our food should contain all the es-
sential nutrients. Only then we will
be able to keep ourselves healthy
and this in turn enhances our beauty.
Make up is only external beauty but
internal beauty comes through the
food we take. Carbohydrates, min-
erals, proteins and vitamins enhance
our beauty. The beauty products can
never enhance our beauty perma-
nently. A change in the daily routine
can bring positive result.
The main source of energy for
the body is carbohydrates. The re-
quired quantity of energy to work is
obtained from mineral rich food.
Avoid taking food made refined
flour, and junk food. The digestion
process slows down when refined
flour is consumed and sometimes it
results in constipation. Such food
intake results in pimples and acne.
To enhance beauty and to keep the
skin healthy one should take whole
grains, cereals, food grains and fruits
daily. Such food items contain fiber,
which is good for health.
Proteins play an important role
in mans life. Proteins are necessary
for the proper growth of nails, hair,
and skin. Deficiency of proteins re-
sults in hair fall and delicate nails and
the skin becomes dry. To avoid these
problems milk and milk products,
egg, fish, food grains and dry fruits
should be taken. Vitamins play ma-
jor role in our body, vitamin K, B
Complex, vitamin C, D and E gives
positive energy to the body.
Vitamin A keeps our eyes and
hair healthy. Vitamin A protects from
skin diseases and oil in the pores
keeps the skin healthy, smooth and
wrinkle free. It also prevents dan-
druff. Lack of Vitamin A affects
eyesight, makes the skin dry and
wrinkles appear on the skin. It is
necessary to consume carrot, milk,
milk products, papaya, tomato, and
green leafy vegetables in order to
prevent these diseases.
Vitamin C produces collagen,
which acts like skin tightening ele-
ment to keep the skin firm. This vi-
tamin keeps the skin healthy and pre-
vents aging.
Vitamin C will be helpful and
keep the gum strong, avoid bad
breath and bleeding of the gums.
Sweat glands also can be controlled
by Vitamin C and it also helps in con-
trolling hair fall. One should eat leafy
vegetables, sprouted grains, my-
robalan, lemon and orange to avoid
these problems.
Vitamin B Complex also plays
an important role in our body and
gives glowing skin.
Lack of these vitamins result in
cracked bleeding lips. Graying of the
hair, red pigments occur on the skin.
To avoid these one should consume
whole cereals, wheat, dry fruits, and
green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin E is available in olive oil,
milk, butter, whole cereals, green
vegetables, and soybeans. It also
helps prevents aging and prevents
wrinkles.
Vitamin E protects from hair fall,
delicate nails and dry skin. Vitamin
D also plays a vital role in our life.
Our bones, teeth and nails can be
maintained with vitamin D. Vitamin

In this modern age or Kalyug,
the inherent meaning of Deepavali
is lost and the actual importance
of this festival is not realized.
Deepavali is a festival, which is
being celebrated since the Vedic
period and its importance has in-
creased the significance of the
holy month Kartik correspond-
ing with September and October
months of the English calendar.
These days people give more
importance to material gains, gifts
etc. Cleaning the house, lighting
the lamps, distributing sweets and
playing cards have become the
main attraction of this festival. As
Vijayadashmi, Deepavali too has
a historic story related to it and has
an intense meaning in its celebra-
tions. It is said that when Lord
Rama returned to Ayodhya from
exile, people were very happy and
celebrated Deepavali joyfully. This
festival is being celebrated for the
several ages and since then
Deepavali festival is celebrated
every year in the Hindu month
Kartik.
As our history conveys human
beings were categorized into four
groups Brahmins, Kshatriyas,
Vaishyas and Shudras. Holy cow
and Banyan tree are considered to
be in the Brahmin category. There
are many festivals associated to each
category, which have their own im-
portance. Like Chaturvarsh system
is found in Aryans festival, Sravani
Upakarma is known as Kshatriyas
festival. Deepawali festival is related
to the Vaishyas and it is known as
the Vaishyas festival because agri-
culture, commerce and Lakshmi -
goddess of wealth, are worshipped
in this festival. People celebrate by
offering all agricultural products
reaped after the harvest and perform
Yagna. At the time of Deepavali
people perform Yagna, by offering
the new harvest to the fire god.
Sweets are distributed. New ac-
count books are maintained and it
is the beginning of the New Year
as well as financial year. This
clearly exhibits its commercial as-
pect.
There are some differences
and similarities between the four
classes or Varnas. Though every
human inherits all qualities from
birth but it is believed that a par-
ticular category has certain promi-
nent characteristics. For example
Brahmins are known for their
wealth, Kshatriyas for their brav-
ery, Vaishyas for their prosperity
and Sudras are known for their
ability to work. All the four cat-
egories live united in one society.
Tamaso ma Jyothir gamaya
(Lead us from dark to light) is the
actual concept of Deepavali and
this should be practiced. The bad
deeds should be rooted out from
this world. People should enlighten
their society with the lamps of
knowledge to terminate the evil
and destroy the darkness of igno-
rance.
D is helpful in formation of phos-
phorus and calcium. Lack of Vita-
min D results in weak nails and den-
tal problems. Vitamin D can be ob-
tained through the sunlight, butter,
sprouted grains, and milk.
Phosphorus, calcium, magne-
sium, iron also play an important role
in our daily life. These should be in-
cluded in our food. They can be
made available by consuming cere-
als, food grains, green leafy veg-
etables, milk and milk products, fresh
fruits and dry fruits.
One should always remember
that phosphorus and calcium helps
in keeping the hair, nails, teeth and
bones healthy.
Water also plays an important
role in our life. It excretes waste
materials from our body. Adequate
quantity of water helps in indiges-
tion and also purifies the blood. Con-
sumption of less water results in
wrinkles, dryness of the skin, con-
stipation, hair fall and pimples.
To conclude we can say that
pranayam, Yog, meditation can bring
noticeable change in the daily rou-
tine. It keeps the body trim and fit,
helps in circulation of blood and re-
duces fats. The body is filled with
divine energy with meditation.

Dr. S. K. Shrivastava
Nature therapy is a method of treatment, which is
done by following natural rules and by using natural
things in their natural form.
Nature has made all the creatures with an arrange-
ment to fight out the diseases and become disease free.
This system works in the body round the clock without
stopping.
When we do not follow the rules of nature, do not
sleep on time and eat food at irregular timings then we
fall ill. In case of some external factor like an accident
does not happen then we are fully responsible for our
illness.
Our body is composed of five main elements namely,
earth, water, sky, air and fire. These elements and their
energy circulate in our body and in every action auto-
matically, but if there is any type of obstruction in this
movement it takes the form of a disease. It is neces-
sary and also logical to cure these disequilibria through
nature therapy only. Nature therapy is the treatment of
soul, mind and body whereas other therapies are just
treatment of the body.
The reason for outcome of disease is unnatural life
style and presence of foreign particles in the body. If
we think about this a little we come to know that dis-
ease is not our enemy, but it increases when we do not
cure it properly and make it incurable.
All the diseases are one though they are known in
different names, there is difference in only their form
and symptoms, like imbalance in food, polluted faecal
matter, which makes the blood impure and some people
suffer from diarrhea, fever, gout, skin diseases etc. If
the foreign particles do not get removed from the body
automatically then there are thrown out in the form of
vomiting, loose motions, fever etc. This prevents their
presence in the body and keeps the body healthy. This
takes place naturally in the body. Therefore nature is
our healer. However chronic problems will certainly take
some time to heal. The reason being that the disease
becomes incurable only when we do not take care on
time or do not give proper treatment.
Lot of research has been done in the field of nature

Small wheat plants are known as
wheat grass. We are aware that wheat
has immense strength and gives us the
strength to fight out diseases. Similarly
wheat grass juice is also very beneficial
for our health. The Ayurvedic doctors
call it as nectar as it has the strength to
overcome almost all the diseases. The
foreign organic scientists call it green
blood.
Wheat grass juice has the capacity
to purify blood and increase hemoglo-
bin. It removes foreign particles and all
toxic elements from the body and keeps
it healthy.
Today man is falling into the grip of
different diseases. Nowadays we get
side-effects free along with expensive
medicines. In this situation we should use
natural methods to remain disease free.
There is no doubt that natural treatment
helps in keeping the body healthy and
disease free. Wheat grass juice is also one such natural remedy, which
is a noble gift of the nature. A person of any age can use this. A
diseased person can consume it daily and improve the disease fighting
capacity. Wheat grass juice has proven to be beneficial even in case
of cancer. Wheat grass juice is full of nutritional elements and regular
consumption can make the body strong and healthy.
Wheat grass has high chlorophyll content when compared to other
plants. The chlorophyll matches up to 40 percent with human blood.
Wheat grass juice is more beneficial than milk, curd, and meat. It can
be grown at homes and therefore it is cheap and easily available. Wheat
grass juice is a rich source of vitamins and alkaline. This is the reason
that a small quantity of this juice fulfills all the deficiencies. People of
all ages can consume it and five drops of this juice should be given to
newborns also.
Wheat grass juice contains active enzymes, minerals, chlorophyll,
fibers, vitamins and different types of nutritional and natural elements.
Therefore wheat grass juice is known as natural lifesaver.
Method of growing wheat grass:
Fill eight to ten flowerpots with soil. Mix some cow dung manure in
the soil. Do not use chemical manures for growing these plants. Soak
the wheat to be sown in water at night. Soak ten gram wheat in one
pot half inch below the soil. Pour water and keep the pot in shade
instead of sun. Make sure that the sunlight does not fall directly on the
pot.
Bow the wheat in second pot on the second day. In this way con-
tinue to sow the wheat in nine pots for nine days one by one. Water the
plants once daily. When you see the plant growing reduce watering.
Now cut the wheat grass from the first plant grown on the first day.
The wheat plant grows up to seven to eight inches in nine days. It is
better to pull the whole plant along with the roots. It is optional to use
the roots. Grind the wheat grass in a mixer and extract the juice. Drink
it in gulps and take up to 50 ml at one time.
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 24
Sow the wheat in the empty pot. In this way use the
second plant the second day, third plant on the third day
and so on. Drink the wheat grass juice daily. Sow the
wheat as and when the pots become empty, and use
the wheat grass. Remember not to use plastic utensils
in the process of making wheat grass juice.
There is one more important thing to remember in
this process. Cut the wheat grass when they grow up
to seven to eight inches long as very long wheat grass
plants lose their qualities. Therefore it is necessary to
cut the plants at the right time in order to get the full
benefits of the wheat grass.
Method of using wheat grass
Wash the wheat grass plants immediately after cut-
ting them. Grind them and sieve it with cloth to extract
the juice. Grind it twice or thrice to get maximum juice.
Nowadays wheat grass juice extracted with the help of
advanced process machines is easily available. Drink
the juice immediately without keeping it for long time
because this reduces its nutritional qualities and com-
pletely destroys after three hours.
Drink wheat grass juice on empty stomach in the
morning. Although it can be taken at any time during
the day. However do not take anything half-hour be-
fore and after drinking this juice. Many people suffer
from belches or vomiting and even cold after taking this
juice. Do not panic in this case as a person has to face
this problems depending on the amount of foreign par-
ticles and toxic elements accumulated in the body. Vom-
iting removes the toxic elements from the body.
Add ginger, honey, and betel leaf in wheat grass. It
increases the taste and also the medicinal qualities and
also prevents belches and discomfort. Do not add lemon
juice and salt in wheat grass juice. However you can
add two to four mint leaves. If it is difficult to extract
wheat juice then chew the grass and eat it. This strength-
ens the gums and teeth and also overcomes mouth
odour. Drink wheat grass juice at least twice or thrice
daily.
Benefits
Wheat grass juice purifies blood and increases pure
blood. It heals boils and wounds with regular consump-
tion. It overcomes body heat and makes it cool. Wheat
grass juice controls bleeding in case of injury. It is also
helpful in case of stomach problems, constipation, gas-
tric trouble etc. it improves digestion process and con-
trols high blood pressure. It is also beneficial for diabe-
tes patients. This juice is beneficial in case of thelesemia,
anemia, and other blood disorder related diseases. It
makes the bones flexible and overcomes skin ailments.
Wheat grass juice is natural source of energy and im-
proves resistance power. This juice is beneficial in case
of paralysis, gout, asthma, tuberculosis and other dis-
eases. It stops graying of hair and controls hair loss.
Nowadays cancer and AIDS are spreading at a very
fast rate. Wheat grass juice is very beneficial in fight-
ing of these disease. Patients suffering from cancer and
AIDS should mix 10 gm wheat grass juice mixed with
25 gm Giloy and then sieve it with cloth. Drink one cup
of juice daily on empty stomach. Regular consumption
of this juice cures cancer and AIDS.
Wheat grass juice has immense strength to fight out
diseases. It is very effective medicine for our body. It
has carbohydrates and other nutritional elements and
proteins. Regular consumption of this juice improves
blood circulation in the body and overcomes fatigue.
The body becomes pink and healthy with its consump-
tion. Wheat grass juice is popular not only in India but
also America. People in America are drinking this juice
three to four times daily especially those who are suf-
fering from serious diseases. The people who had lost
all hopes are getting miraculous results from it. There-
fore it is clear that wheat grass juice has the capacity to
cure serious diseases. A healthy person can reap sev-
eral health benefits especially in todays polluted envi-
ronment. The disease caused due to climatic changes
can also be fought out with wheat grass juice and re-
main fresh during the day.

The poet says that the man realizes the way
of life when it comes to end. The machinery of
mind learns to work properly when all the parts
become weak. The man did not take out time
to pray god when he actually had time and asked
for time when it was really short. When the death
comes to the doorstep and god of death comes
to take you away from the world at that time the
man realizes the importance of healthy life style.

Smoking is said to be the root cause of several dan-
gerous diseases. According to an authentic survey con-
ducted, marriage with a smoker can also be dangerous
for the partner. As per the research, the risk of stroke
of heart related problems doubles in case of passive
smoker. The past researches have talked about risk of
heart attacks in smokers but passive smoking was not
mentioned in it. According to the researchers of Harvard
University marriage with smokers increases the risk of
stroke by 72 percent.
The research says that non-smokers or those who
have quit smoking also have the chances of stroke if
the partner smokes. Chief researcher Dr. Maria Glymer
says that smoking has a negative impact on the partner
also. During the research around 16 thousand people
above the age of 50 years were examined during the
study who had completed nine years of married life.
The study showed that if a non-smoker gets married to
a smoker then the risk of contracting heart diseases
and stroke increase by about 42 percent.
According to another study, smokers also had the
risk of loss of memory in old age. There are chances of
suffering from dementia. Dementia is a disease which
affects the behaviour, memory and speech of the pa-
tient. Severian Sabia and his colleagues associated with
the national health institute of France conducted a study
on ten thousand working people in the age group of 35
and 55 years in London held between 1985 and 1988.
The study showed that smoking affected the memory
with growing age.
An article published in the magazine Archives of
International Medicine, these researchers claimed that
chain smoking has very deep impact on the memory of
smokers. They also said that those who quit smoking
also reduce the risk of poor memory. According to the
researchers, there is a strong relationship between smok-
ing and memory and therefore the real picture is not
clear because many people lose their lives before cross-
ing middle age. They believe that health can be improved
by quitting smoking even in old age.

Acharya Satyanand Naishthik
Children! Once upon a time two friends lived in a
village. One of the friends visited the other friends
house. The friends wife was churning butter. She wel-
comed him with warmth and offered good hospitality.
She told that his friend has gone to city for some work.
The friend left after some time. The friends wife real-
ized then that she has lost her gold chain, which was
very costly.
In the evening when the hus-
band returned she complained
about loss of gold chain. The hus-
band asked When did you
loose it? She explained, When
your friend had come I was
churning butter. After revealing
the story, she also insisted that he
should talk to his friend about it.
The husband refused to do so and
replied, My friend is very hon-
est and wealthy, why will he need
your chain?
When the wife insisted him again and again the hus-
band went to the friends house. He asked his friend
who in turn gave a suitable reply.
The friend in return asked You happened to visit
my house in my absence and at the same time my wife
lost her chain. There was no other person in the house
at that time. If by any chance you have taken the chain
then please let me know. The friend kept quite for a
while and then said-Yes! I remember the chain is with
me. I thought the chain is of light weight let me make a
new and heavier chain for her, so I have given it to the
gold smith you can get it after two days.
The wife and the husband returned home happily.
After two days he went to the friends house with a
new gold chain. Both the husband and wife were de-
lighted to see the chain.
After few months a farmer came to buy butter. When
the lady put her hand in the container to take the butter
she noticed the chain in the bottom of the container.
She was astonished to see the chain. She gave the re-
quired butter to the farmer and quickly narrated the story
to the husband. She said- We
have done a big mistake, when
your friend came home I was
churning butter and my chain fell
in the container, which I found it
today. The husband was sur-
prised to hear this. Both the hus-
band and wife went to the friends
place with both the chains. They
returned the new chain and asked
When you had not taken the
chain then why did you admit that
you had it?
The friend replied Even if I
had said no you would have thought that I was lying
and that I was a thief. Our friendship would have ended.
I got a new chain made and was successful in remov-
ing the doubt from your mind. You took the same chain
with happiness. I gave value to friendship than the chain.
By hearing this friend and his wife broke down. Tears
started rolling down their cheeks. And they asked the
friend to excuse them and in turn the friend said Even
if I sacrifice myself for your friendship it would be less.
Lesson This story teaches us that a true friend
gives value to his friendship and does not suspect his
friend. A true friend is priceless.
A true friend gives value to his friendship and does not suspect his friend.
A true friend is priceless

When we analyze the world in general conditions
we realize that basically two types of energies are func-
tioning. One is popularly known as divine energy or
strength and the other is known as fate ruled by time.
In conditions of total divinity both these energies take
an independent form and function differently. However,
when god realizes self in the form of creature then these
energies take different directions. One energy proves
to be the source of strength for creature or animal and
the other removes the feeling of being a living creature
and helps in concentrating on the almighty god.
Divine strength reestablishes soul in the supreme
soul. Fate holds the creature in this world through multi-
faced inspiration. The strength, which unextends time
with its own power, is known as time contraction
strength. Time has different phases. We have to follow
these phases in the state ruled by time. Time is the ulti-
mate symptom of contraction. It is violating the se-
quential and enlightens the insequential form. Contrac-
tion of time results in seconds. The world is under con-
trol of time. Therefore changes take place permanently.
The sequence has quantitative synchronization in this
result. This quantitative synchronization transforms into
micro from macro due to blessings of god. More the
expression of consciousness, lesser the contraction of
time. As a result of this the phase of time has no affect
on the conscious form of untouchable time. Unending
and everlasting time is published only in one second.
There is sequence in time but there is no sequence in
seconds. When this sequences completes one round
and comes back to zero then only second remains. That
is why it is said that the whole world is created in one
moment. The desire to adhere to enter into moment
from time makes the time enter into the held upon mo-
ment. There are different levels of time and each level
we can see synchronization between pace of time and
quantity. This synchronization depends upon the mini-
mum or maximum speed. When the quantity of time
contracts or reduces due to the affect of inconceivable
strength there merger of time is released. The bright-
ness of moment is realized automatically. The stage or
place at which this sequence disappears there the bright-
ness of moment is inevitable. When moment is estab-
lished permanently the time is absent. This stage is
known as contraction of time. This stage can have dif-
ferent classifications depending on the synchronization
of speed of time. Moment is the non-sequential time.
Moment is permanent and has its own light. It is neces-
sary to accept the sequence of time in practical life but
momentary knowledge is not related to the practical
role. The meaning of unending time present in our mind
is nothing but moment. Time is elapsed due to the af-
fect of contraction of time. When time gets elapsed the
internal element of soul which is unbreakable and has
its own light blossoms in the form of independent light.
The minimum or maximum speed of time can be as-
sessed with the help of quantity of time. The knowl-
edge of place is always associated with the time. There-
fore the place also elapses along with time. Then the
soul becomes free from place and time. In this stage
any place or any time can be expressed in front of him
depending upon our resolution. In this way the perse-
verance and scope of a yogi is expressed near it.
Rotation of time
The pace of time is rotational. The whole world ro-
tates depending on the quantity of time. Time has simple
speed. The time throws it light in the form of big time.
When time takes backward moment it is possible to
cross over the illusion. Then the pace has light. Finally
all the three times are illuminated in integrated present
form. After the simple pace of time the time obtains
stability in central position. The time changes into big
Pt. Gopinath Kaviraj
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 29
time and throws light into the gigantic form of god. When
the time comes back into forward moment the unend-
ing power of unending light is unveiled and throws bright-
ness. At that time all the places and time become bright
in-between one great spot (point of time). Then the
same place and same time are lightened with the desire
of yogi. There is no obstacle or farness. Acharya
Bhartuhari says;
=rf+r a rrrrrn a a=rn
=atarrnaar -+rrv ffrrra
the presence of great light cannot perform any pro-
cess of covering action. Covering is the work of quality
of Tamas i.e., anger. The darkness is removed in light
similarly when the sun rise all types of coverings are
removed. The playfulness of mind is produced from
rajas or passion and the rising of sun removes passion
just like anger. The mind is completely free from play-
fulness. When the mind hollow with playfulness appears
in front of light then there is nothing indirect in front of
the world. Everything is available in the present form.
When the time terminates and major time retreats re-
sults in a condition, which is also the past of the big
nature. This is the ultimate form.
Attaining immortality and victory over death
In normal sense attainment of immortality and vic-
tory over death appear to be two names of same condi-
tion, but actually it is not so because victory over death
is much higher stage when compared to attainment of
immortality. The narration of churning of the sea
(Samudra Manthan) mentions that the gods and god-
desses consumed nectar produced from this process
and became immortal. But nobody was capable of con-
suming the poison produced in the same process. Those
who consumed the poison and digested it, there condi-
tion was cannot be simply described according to gods.
Therefore, he is known as lord of lords, winner of death
or Mrityunjay. Nobody can become winner of death
without winning over death (that comes with time). This
time is poison (that comes with time). Good human be-
ings cannot digest it. Good people consume the good
and beautiful part obtained from churning the entire
world; Mrityunjay or lord of lords is he who consumes
the introvert and opposing element produced in this
churning process, which cannot be consumed by gods.
He takes it happily and goes beyond death. This is known
as transformation of form publishing. If we want to
win time then it is not enough to sacrifice lower level
and go to higher level. It is necessary to combine both
the levels and make them one, in other words, it is the
transformation of physical body to astral body but it is
not just enough to obtain synchronization at astral level.
It is necessary to take the strength from vital life en-
ergy present in astral body and change it into physical
body and it is necessary to change physical into astral
form with the affect of vital energy. This continuous
transformation will strengthen physical power in astral
body on one hand and on the other hand it will strengthen
the astral power in the physical body. Then later these
two become one.
Let us name it A for the easy comprehension. A
travels upwards and enters the ethical body and com-
bines with it. Afterwards it joins with B and combines it
also with ethical body. Slowly it becomes one. Later B
travels upwards and enters the causal body and unites
with it. This condition is C. later C travels upwards and
touches the minute body and becomes one. Later this
united power appears in causal body and establishes
science in indifferent form. This condition is D. there is
one condition beyond this also called E. This single power
is physical body, astral body, causal body and ethical
body but it does not have minute body. Later E enters
the soul and unites with it. Later the soul appears and
combines with the stage that is without soul. then there
is no difference between soul and body. When this union
takes place the difference between consciousness and
unconsciousness and also between physical and minute.
The external element from all sections is removed and
establishes in the omnipotent power. This is the actual
state of liberation. This is the actual victory over death.
This stage is higher than the stage of gods because in
the latter there is attainment of immortality but not vic-
tory over death. Immortal souls are afraid of death and
keep a distance from it; they only get long life. This
long life ends on doomsday; but victory over death is a
stage beyond time. Death does not remain. Accomplish-
ment of this depends on the capability of victory over
death. Victory over death is not the ultimate achieve-
ment. The following line from Gita (14/2) says:
=n:f rr-a rf-a '
This is the description of the stage of victory of
death beyond time.

Word meaning Tasmin Sati when the posture

known as pranayam.
Meaning: Dividing the normal pace of respiration
once the posture gets stabilized is known as pranayam.
It needs to be mentioned that the practitioner gets
the benefit of pranayam only when the posture is
stabilized. Before that the practitioner gets only the
benefit of good health. this is the reason that the words,
Tasmin Sati have been used in the prose. It also needs
to be noted that the actual form of pranayam is dividing
the normal pace of respiration but certainly not the
objective. The real objective of pranayam is to increase
the depth and length of respiration. As far as this query
is concerned as to what happens when the practitioner
is able to increase the length and depth of pranayam?
The answer is that it provides physical and mental stability
to the maximum level, which would be helpful in
achieving concentration and restraining the sense organs.
Query How many types of pranayam are present?
rnr+-attar+r f-r rrr= =rf+r. ft rr trr = +n.so
Word meaning Bahya-Abhyantar-Stambhavritti
pranayam involving external, internal and stopping the
breath; desh-kaal-sankhyabhi through place, time and
number; paridrishta has been measured; deergha-
sukshma becomes long and depth.
Meaning Pranayam known in different names
like internal, external and stopping measured through
place, time and number becomes long and deep.
The pranayam described in the above prose has three
classifications, namely, external, internal and stopping.
Regular practice of pranayam for long duration, when
the pace of vital life energy is measured on the basis of
place, time and number then it is clear that the vital life
energy has become long and depth when compared to
previous stage (before and after practice of pranayam).
The three classifications of pranayam have been
described below:
External: Sit in any posture (practiced or stabilized
position) and throw out the breath outside in a rhythmic
way and stop it outside. Stop the breath outside for as
long as possible. Keep the mind completely free of
thoughts and focus on the tip of the nose. Breath in
slowly when you feel like inhaling. Do not breath in
suddenly with jerk. repeat this five to six times. This is
known as external pranayam.
Internal: Sit in any posture (practiced or stabilized
position) and inhale in a rhythmic way and stop it inside.
Stop the breath inside for as long as possible. Keep the
mind completely free of thoughts and focus on the tip
of the nose. Breath out slowly when you feel like
exhaling. Do not breath out suddenly with jerk. repeat
this five to six times. This is known as internal pranayam.
Stopping: Sit in any posture (practiced or stabilized
position) and stop the breath either inside or outside (as
and where the breath is positioned). Remain in this
position for as long as possible. Keep the mind completely
free of thoughts and focus on the tip of the nose. Exhale
or inhale slowly when you feel like breathing in or out.
Do not breathe out or breathe in suddenly with jerk.
repeat this five to six times. This is known as stopping
the respiration.
Query: What is the fourth form of pranayam?
rnr+-atfrrr+r t a r . s+
Word meaning: Bahyabhyantarvishayapekshi: it the
form of pranayam that criticizes the internal and external
pranayam mentioned above; chaturtha fourth
pranayam.
Meaning The fourth pranayam is the form that
criticizes the internal and external pranayam.
As per the prose, the breath is not stopped either
insider or outside but the breath coming in and going out
is just seen. The right method of this pranayam is as
follows;
Sit in any stabilized posture and just see the breath
coming in and going out. Do not give importance to the
different thoughts arising in the mind. Do not try to
increase the length and depth of breath or its pace, just
watch the normal breathing process. After practicing it
for some time, the practitioner will realize that the breath
has become long and deep automatically.

AYURVED SPECIAL
Swami Nischalananda Saraswati Maharaj
Ayurved According to the third chapter of
Shrimangavat, Shri Mananarayan is like Brahma. Lord
Brahma originated from his navel. Rigved and Ayurved
were narrated from his mouth. Therefore Ayurved is
considered to be the Upved of Rigved. On the basis of
authenticity and evidences Ayurved is considered to be
a part of Atharvaveda in this field. +ra +r +rfr

to this verse, an Ayurvedic expert who has the knowl-
edge of all the three periods has the knowledge of
Vedas. Ayurved is the health building system, which is
related to age, protecting the longevity and improving
health. therefore, Ayurved is the Ved of ayu or Age.

A person practicing Yog can win with the help of
self-control and age.
Sub-divisions of age: The philosophical books have
divided age into two kinds on the basis of form and
results. The god, which is the ultimate form of happi-
ness enjoys permanent age (unending) due to the nec-
tar like form and nature that wins over death. Accord-
ing to Yogdarshan, caste, age and enjoyment are the
three results of actions. Caste means the birth that a
person gets due to his past deeds, age means the posi-
tion and duration of respiration in a body and enjoyment
means the experience of happiness and unhappiness
with the availability of things of comfort. In this way,
according to the second classification, age means the
life and destruction after birth.
The different efforts that a person makes to protect
his longevity but it is futile as it is subject to destiny.
Therefore in human life, protecting the age and increas-
ing it with different means is useful as medicines, herbs
and plants are not subject to destiny.
Determination of age on the basis of age: Saint
Charak says that the age that is determined for human
being in a particular period should be considered as the
beginning of the period. One year from an average life
span of 100 years for a human being is reduced at the
end of every 100 years. The average of life span of
man in Kalyug (present period) is 100 years and dura-
tion of divine year is 1200; therefore full longevity is
1200 / 10 = 120 years. The Full span of Kalyug is 432000
years. So at the end of 432000/100= 432 years, the hu-
man life will reduce to 100 -1=99 years. The reduction
of age should be considered on this basis.

able age with the understanding of nectar like soul that
can win over death. Pure, balanced diet, disciplined life
style, good actions, proper sleep, self-control and wor-
ship of god is expected in order to lead a happy, healthy
and disease free life.
Ayurvedic treatment and practitioners: Ayurved
is the system of treatment that is authenticated by Vedas.
It is also authenticated from the soul that lives inside
our body. It is the treatment method that comes from
the feeling that soul is permanent even after death. The
ignorance of the person work and action related birth

Diet and regimen : Over eating and starving both

able, chewable, thing that can be swallowed and sucked
are six types of diet. If chewable is counted as a part of
edible then there are five types of diet. If drinkable is
counted as apart of eatable then there are four types of
diet. Lentil and rice are eatable. Sweet balls, puris,
chapattis are edible. Gram etc. are chewable. Squash,
lemon juice, milk etc. are drinkable. Diet is the combi-
nation of all these things.
The above mentioned five, four and six types of food
includes liquid, solid and spicy food. Solid food is filling
and strengthening. Spicy food increases fire and gives
strength. Liquid food quenches thirst and nourishing.
Food has basically three purposes, namely, overcoming
hunger, strengthen the body and giving satisfaction.
Solid and spicy food is hot, therefore half the stom-
ach should be filled with food, and one-fourth with wa-
ter and remaining one fourth should be left empty.
According to Painglopanishad and
Tirshakhabrahmanopanishad voice is an airy element.
Voice is expressed as an organ of action. The words
expressed through voice also prove the airy factor of
voice. But it also proves the brightness of the voice
mentioned in Chandogyashruti (6/5/4). Painglopanishad
etc. have accepted the fire, which is the sub lord of
voice. Hence it proves the brightness of voice. The
brightness of voice is also proved from the absence of
airy food. Consumption of hot gold bhasma etc and hot
milk proves the strength of voice.
The airy form of vital life energy is due to the quality
of touch. This is proved with the fact of listening and
memory.
Solid food provides nourishment to the rectum, ego,
and vital life energy. Faecal matter is also passed with
the help of solid food. Besides the two vital humours
out of seven, namely, flesh and fat are also nourished
by solid food. Water and liquid food provide nourish-
ment to hands and lower part of the body, skin and liq-
uid part, mind and heart and vyan and Udan among
vital life energies. It also helps in urination.
Water and liquid food help in the production of blood
and essence. Hot and spicy food nourishes the voice,
legs, ears, eyes, intelligence and Saman and Udan vital
life energies. Hot and spicy food nourishes the bone
marrow and bones amongst the seven humours. Solid,
liquid and hot food produces and nourishes the sperms.
The different creatures living in deserts, sea and land
are called lifeless without water, mindless without food
and speechless without hot food. Consumption of one
type of food fulfills the deficiency of other.

ON THE OCCASION OF DASHEHRA
B.K.Soin
A person should possess highest qualities in order
to become a divine person of this world. Only then that
person is counted amongst the great personalities of
the country. Rama is a respectable and divine figure for
the supreme qualities he possessed because he obeyed
his parents and fulfilled his duties like an ordinary per-
son. On the other hand Ravana and Bali are disre-
spected because Ravana tried to show his authority on
Ramas wife Sita and Bali spread terrorism in the soci-
ety instead of protecting it and crossed the social bound-
aries. In our culture such people are called anti-social
and those who protect the society from such evil ele-
ments are called saviours or fathers.
Shri Rama gave priority to the development of indi-
viduals in Aryan culture but the Asian and European
societies always considered material development and
physical strength to be their ideals. We bow down in
front of Shri Rama and goddess Sita. Sitas obedience
towards her husband Rama and her sacrificial nature
have left a deep impression on the minds of Aryan
women. Lakshmans quality of tolerance and Bharats
love towards brother inspire us to inculcate these quali-
ties and represent strong character.
The worship of goddess Aparajita on the Dashera
has also originated from mythological period. The god-
dess Aparajita has been known in different names like
Kalika and Chandi and the practice of worshipping her
has practically hidden the Nirajana process.
On the pious occasion of Dashera or Vijayadashami
we should focus our attention on most controversial
topic on this day, i.e., Setu Samudram project. As men-
tioned earlier, lord Rama is worshipped in Indian cul-
ture for his supreme qualities. He fought a great war
against injustice and irreligion and protected social fab-
ric and duties. Shri Rama is the center of faith and re-
spect for innumerable number of Hindus living in India
and abroad. Here it is necessary to say that it is not
correct to play with the sentiments and faith of people.
The controversy on Ram Setu project has been
raised at a time when the Archeological Survey of In-
dia mentioned in its affidavit that Ramayana and
Ramcharita Manas authored by Valmiki and Goswami
Tulsidas respectively are important elements of ancient
Indian literature but the characters mentioned in these
epics do not have any historical authenticity. This affi-
davit was presented as a defense against the appeals
made against the breaking down the Rama Setu or
Adams bridge for the construction of this project.
This raised hullabaloo in India when questions were
raised against the very existence of Shri Rama. It hurt
the sentiments of Indians faith and beliefs. On seeing
this the Archeological survey of India withdrew its affi-
davit and expressed its happiness on accepting the ex-
istence of Rama and the construction of Rama Setu by
Rama. But at the same time it raised objection on the
appeals made stating that Rama broke down the bridge
and that it was not a man-made but a bridge made by
some superman. It is indeed a mockery to say that lord
Rama broke down the bridge. It is a direct attack on
the beliefs and faith of the people.
At this juncture it is necessary to know about the
Rama Setu? A range of lime stone mountains is present
on the northwestern part of Sri Lanka in Mannar Is-
lands and southeastern banks of Rameshwaram in west-
ern India. 48 km long mountain ranges separates the
Mannar gulf and Palk Strait. It is believed that this was
accessible till 15
th
century but it got submerged in wa-
ter due to storms and other climatic changes.
According to Ramayana, Ramas army constructed
this bridge and reached Sri Lanka through it. American
space agency NASA had taken a picture of this Adams
bridge from space and said that it is not possible to see
from space and say whether this bridge was man made
or not.
According to Indian underground survey department
Adams bridge is not a natural construction. It believes
that it is impossible that nobody can bring the stones to
that place. Some stones are so light that they can even
float on water.
Under this project, there is a proposal to construct a
canal like Swiss canal between Palk Strait and Mannar
gulf of India and Sri Lanka. 83 km long canal will be
navigable for large ships. A British engineer Alfred
Dundaj Tailor made the concept for this project for the
first time in 1860. Setu Samudram project committee
was set up under the leadership of Dr. A. Ramaswamy
Mudiliar in 1955. The state government sanctioned it
on March 13, 2003 and finally the present ruling gov-
ernment United Progressive Alliance (UPA) began the
project on June 2, 2005.
It is believed that after the completion of the project
all the big international ships will pass through this canal
instead of the present long route through Colombo port.
According to one estimate more than 2000 ships would
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 34
be using this route every year. The project would
earn a business worth 5000 crores in a period of 19
years but the investment would be 2000 crores.
The religious leaders say that the place of canal is
the mythological Ram Setu and its existence would end
with the construction of this new canal. Besides, drill-
ing and blasting inside sea would cause a threat to the
underwater creatures and environment. This area is
very prosperous part of the country from the view point
of natural underwater resources. There are thousands
of varieties of sea plants and underwater life.
The government has told the Supreme Court in its
statement issued to calm down the controversy of this
project that it is trying to find alternative solutions be-
fore implementing this project. The path to be found for
the construction of this project is a different question
but it is not correct to play with the heritages having
historical, religious and environmental importance. There
are thousands and millions of devotees of lord Rama
who worship him with deep faith. Setu Samudram rep-
resents their faith and beliefs. Therefore any such act
could hurt their sentiments.

is my desire. The fame, which I would get from my true opponents, would be pure fame; it would not be
exaggerated at any stage. We get fame from friends and admirers but it is not special and it has no value.
But oh lord! I will not become proud, or forget you with this fame, but on the other hand I will always
think of you and be happy with this kind of fame. This fame would be an identity of my unique qualities not
the reason for my happiness. My real happiness is present in your shelter. The outside world could speak
against me, defame me but I would be happy with the results obtained with your blessings in the same way
as with the fame from external world. My happiness or unhappiness will not be affected with external
fame or defame. Oh lord! Please bless me that I should be always happy, cheerful and satisfied with the

Dr. Manohar Bhandari
M.B.B.S, M.D (Physiology)
Since Baba Ramdev has begun
the mission of popularizing Yog and
pranayam the people are becom-
ing more and more aware towards
these ancient health-building sys-
tems. Both media and people are
bowing down in front of Yog and
pranayam after realizing the impor-
tance of Yog and pranayam. The
miraculous results of Yog and
pranayam have become the topic
of discussion amongst the people
and media. A question arises in this
situation that whether pranayam is
indeed a strong weapon to fight out
all the diseases. As a student of
science and general inquisitiveness
this question arose in my mind also.
It is necessary to understand a
few things before knowing the scientific basis of pranayam, because they
will be helpful in understanding and explaining the facts.
The author of several books and renowned pediatric Dr. O.P.Ghai says
that the human body begins with two cells in the mothers womb which
increase to 20 thousand crore cells on the 60
th
day. There are 20 crore cells
at the time of birth which increase three times when the person becomes
adult. Wear and tear and repairing of cells is the ultimate rule of the body.
Millions of cells die everyday and an equal number of cells are produced.
Blood makes new proteins and the function of repair and production takes
place. The dead cells come into the category of left out foreign particles
due to this wear and tear. It is necessary to remove these dead cells from
the body. This is possible only with the help of proper blood circulation.
Otherwise the foreign particles create obstacle in the normal pace of cells
According to the experts

sary to maintain the

ment in order to maintain
internal balance. This is
the real treasure of the

and related organs.
There are 40 to 50 lac red blood cells, 4 to 11 thou-
sand white blood cells and around two lakhs platelets in
one ml density of blood. One inch contains around 25.5
ml.
On one hand, our cells work as an independent unit
and on the other hand they work in synchronization with
other cells and fulfill their responsibilities with full sin-
cerity. However they should get enough glucose and
vital life energy to function properly. Digestion process
and respiration provide these two elements to the blood.
The heart acting like pumping station supplies these two
to the each and every cell. The heart has around five to
five and half liters of blood for this function. Besides
there is a thick network of 96 thousand km long blood
veins in our body for the benefit of heart. Not only that
the nature has also made arrangements for uninterrupted
supply of nutritional elements and oxygen to the organ
which suffer from fatty blood veins due to the habit of
overeating with the help of collaterals. The fist-sized
heart does so much work through out the day that can
fill a tank with capacity of 15 thousand liters to the brink.
In spite of performing this task continuously the heart
does not stop. That is not all the heart also has the duty
to remove the foreign particles, lactic acid and carbon
dioxide produced due to the breaking up of glucose in
all the cells, organs, parts and tissues. If these foreign
particles remain in the organs then the related cell will
not be able to fulfill the function properly. The heart
that supplies glucose and vital life energy to various or-
gans also removes the chemicals from these places. In
other words proper blood circulation is necessary in order
to fulfill all the functions right from cell to organ.
According to the experts of physiology it is neces-
sary to maintain the adaptation and adjustment in order
to maintain internal balance. This is the real treasure of
the human health.
Whatever functions take place in our body is pos-
sible only with the flexibility of the cells and each and
every organ. Reduction in flexibility means the related
organ has begun to lose its capacity. The flexibility
of cells and respiratory pipes reduce in case of asthma.
Similarly the blood veins lose their flexibility in case of
high blood pressure and heart diseases. Wrinkles are
indication of flexibility of the skin. The slow pace of
joints or some problem denotes lack of flexibility in the
joints. If the muscles lose their flexibility then their ca-
pacity reduces. Similarly, ego, pride, arrogance, rigidity,
stubbornness are examples of lack of flexibility of mind
and heart.
River is flowing continuously, which means it has
pace, freshness and life. The water in a pond is stag-
nant and hence it is dirty. The bacteria present in river
water are negligible when compared to pond water. If
we lock a house then it becomes an abode for dust,
sand, cobwebs, termite, mosquito and then the plaster
starts coming out. If the house is not cleaned for two or
four days then dust accumulates in the house. This is
applicable to the body organs also. Proper blood circu-
lation supplies vital life energy to all the cells and re-
moves the dust and foreign particles present there.
There are several millions of bacteria and chemi-
cals in the atmosphere. They enter our body through
respiration, food, skin or water and make us diseased.
Nature has provided us with a strong immunity system,
this includes thymus glands, tonsils, adenoids, lymphatic
system and lymph glands, sweat glands, saliva glands,
digestive system, liver, kidneys, lungs, are deployed at
different places in order to protect the body. They ro-
tate inside the bone marrow round the clock. When-
ever a bacteria or chemicals enter the body or a cell
dies then the white blood cells deployed in different or-
gans like soldiers reach there and begin their work. It
increases blood circulation. A simple example can ex-
plain this fact. When dust falls into the eyes or conjunc-
tivitis attacks then tears are formed and eyes become
red as blood circulation increases. The bone marrow
also requires vital life energy and nutritional elements in
sufficient quantity to make blood cells and to function
properly under the immunity system. This requires effi
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 37
cient respiratory system, digestive system and cir-
culatory system.
Generally the palpitation increases when we do some
laborious work, this is known as tidal respiration. We
breathe in breathe out around 350 to 500 ml air during
this process. We breathe in eight to 12 times in one
minute. In this way around six to seven liter air is in-
haled and exhaled in one minute but when we exercise,
walk briskly or run then around 100 to 140 liter air is
inhaled and exhaled.
The normal breathing capacity of a health person is
known as maximum breathing capacity. It simply means
we use less than 20 percent capacity of our lungs for
our normal routine.
Vital capacity is another method of measuring the
lung capacity; according to the Indian standard deter-
mined by the scientists the blood level in men should be
3.5 to 4.5 liters and 3 to 4 liters in women. I have no-
ticed during my 25-year tenure at Indore Medical Col-
lege that the average vital capacity of boy students was
2200 to 3400 ml and that of girl students was 1800 to
2800 ml. During the same tenure I noticed that the sports-
men had ten percent (4.5 liters) more vital capacity
when compared to normal students. We can easily es-
timate the respiratory capacity of the youth and com-
mon man.
This is a scientific fact that if a body part is not used
for several days then that organ becomes weak in its
shape and work. This is known as disused dystrophy in
medical parlance. This can be easily understood with
the help of a simple example, the fractured bone is plas-
tered for six week, if we do not move the fingers and
related organ then it reduces the movement of that par-
ticular part, it becomes stiff and thin. The bones get
back the normal movement up to 20 25 percent with
regular physiotherapy exercise.
Let us talk about the lungs, they have five times more
capacity than normal, but if we have to climb five sto-
ries we start panting because we do not utilize the lungs
to the fullest capacity.
Our brain contains feeding center and satisfaction
center. The satisfaction centers is set on the basis of
the food intake in childhood and youth depending on the
satisfaction level obtained from food. Then the person
gets satisfaction only when he gets that amount of food
throughout the life. For example if a young boy is used
to eating four chapattis, two bowls of dal, one bowl of
vegetable, one bowl of rice, salad etc. then he feels
satisfied only when he gets this amount of food. Then
satisfied center will demand the same amount of food
in order to reach the level of satisfaction even if the
body energy level reduces in old age.
The body gets additional energy everyday and when
it is not spent it is accumulated in the form of fat. This
fat gets accumulated not only on stomach, thighs, hips,
chest and calves but also in other body parts. Liver,
lungs, heart, kidney, heart, digestive system and blood
veins also get the benefit of additional energy. If the
additional energy is not spent then the related organ
becomes diseased.
The disease could be diagnosed later but the capac-
ity starts reducing. If we do not spent the additional
energy that we obtain on daily basis then the result is
extra fat. The other specialists besides heart specialists
also advice to spent the additional energy obtained from
calories. Swimming, brisk walking, pranayam, Yog asana,
gardening and household works are the best methods
to burn the extra calories.
There is peripheral heart in the calf muscles
besides the heart beating in the chest. The calf
muscles play an important role in pushing the blood
towards the heart with contraction. If we lead a
comfortable and luxurious life and do not do any work
or exercise then the blood circulation is obstructed.
Yog and pranayam provide good health because it
regulates respiration and supplies oxygen in sufficient
quantity. It is an indisputable fact that pranayam has
magical affect on the body. It is the undefeatable
warrior to fight out the diseases. After understanding
the functioning of the body we can easily understand
the effect of pranayam on our body.

Speech is said to be of four types normal, mental, inner and silent. The
normal speech is the usual conversation in our daily life. The words are pro-
nounced with the help of throat and inner tongue region. The speech that is
made after some thought is called mental speech. In this case the words are
transmitted out of our mind in spite of our silence. The thinking that goes on in
the heart is inner speech. The soundless speech is called silent speech. This is
used when we converse with God or while praying.
The speech is said to be the ray of hope by which the mortal unites with the
immortal. This is also known as the Gods speech. Only lucky people can hear
this speech. Those who are able to control their sense organs use this speech
with high spirits. Those who come to this world as messengers of god to obey
the orders of the almighty can hear this voice. Sri Krishnas discourse to Arjuna
in the Bhagwadgita comes under this category. Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and
Swami Vivekanand example can also be quoted here. Once Sri Paramhamsa
was suffering from throat pain. His disciple Vivekananda insisted that he should
speak to the Goddess- Oh! Mother, I am unable to eat anything due to this
throat pain. See that I am able to take a little food. On hearing this Goddess
said-why are these all not eating and sleeping.
One more example can be quoted in this context. Once swami Vivekananda
asked Turiyananda to go to America and work. Vivekananda told Turiyananda
mother wants you to go to America and work. Turiyananda asked How did
you hear her voice? Then Swamiji replied you can also hear her voice as
others do. But you need minute sukshma naadi to hear this.
Yogrishi Swami Ramdev always says My God is inside me and I am in my
God. Never be disappointed; never be sad, you are the divine son and the divine
daughter. You are the children of that almighty God. Have faith in God, and in
yourself. You have the capacity within you to remove all illnesses or diseases.
Always remember that God is with you. Then why are you disappointed? Ev-
eryday Ramdev Jis speech touches the heart of thousands of people. Such
immortal spiritual speech remains forever in the mind.
The people with sukshma nadi have pure heart and those whose mind is pure
can think with humanity. Whose speech and deeds are one and the same, those
who believe in God, who has faith, and those who are emotional, who respects
the Guru and the almighty can hear this divine speech.
Speech is said to be
of four types nor-
mal, mental, inner
and silent. The nor-
mal speech is the
usual conversation in
our daily life. The
words are pro-
nounced with the help
of throat and inner
tongue region. The
speech that is made
after some thought is
called mental speech.
In this case the words
are transmitted out of
our mind in spite of
our silence. The
thinking that goes on
in the heart is inner
speech. The sound-
less speech is called
silent speech. This is
used when we con-
verse with God or
while praying

Prof. G.R.Verma
There are four main objectives of Yog treatment
of diseases, maintaining good health, development of
consciousness and accomplishment. Yog is mainly the
experience of elements, which are focused on the in-
ternal development. One can achieve control over
speech, collection, lust, sensory organs, behaviour, char-
acter, and tongue with regular practice of Yog. Restrain-
ing sensory organs is the main objective of overcoming
mental conditions; it in turn is the objective of overcom-
ing conditions present in the mind. The devotee experi-
ences ultimate happiness when he destroys lust. There-
fore a Yog practitioner should always try to overcome
mental conditions. Attainment of peace and happiness
is the main objective of Yog by synchronizing speech
with mind, mind with mind-stuff, mind-stuff with soul
and soul with super soul.
Lust is present till ignorance is present, and till lust is
present the man has to go through the cycle of life and
death. The world cycle ends with the union of soul with
super soul. The objective of all yogis is the experience
of this union, not only at mental level but also through
self-realization. The practitioner will find ultimate truth,
and it is possible to experience spiritual and highest hap-
piness. The soul synchronizes with mind, sensory or-
gans and ego due to human ignorance. When the soul
disconnects itself from all these then it unites with su-
preme soul. The dutifulness teaches us to unite the re-
sults in the desire to achieve god. Meditation or Rajayog
tries to fill all the accomplishments with devotion and
unconsciousness. It also strengthens the power of at-
taining god with meditation, devotion and worship. De-
votion circulates the feeling of love and serving the god.
The objective of knowledge is to make the human ex-
perience the service to soul and supreme soul with the
help of wisdom of understanding soul and supreme soul.
Devotion is the basis among all the yogis, out of which
devotion of body, mind and speech is extremely impor-
tant. Cleanliness, celibacy and chastity are physical
devotions. Truth, speaking for welfare of people and
study of classics is devotion of speech. Politeness, hap-
piness, silence, controlling sensory organs and cleanli-
ness of mind are devotion of mind. Regular and dedi-
cated practice of all these is Yog. All these devotions
take birth from love, which help in experiencing the union
of all mankind with supreme soul. The isolated con-
sciousness of the practitioner merges with the collec-
tive consciousness of the universe just like the waves
that submerge into the ocean.
Classifications of devotion: Four types of devotion
are mentioned in Yograj Upanishad and Dattareya Yog
classic. They are devotion through chanting of man-
tras, concentration, austerity and enjoyment.
nrrnr r rarntar
trrnrar. tr rnrrnanta =.
The above verse explains these types:
Devotion through chanting of mantras: Accord-
ing to Yog Beej and Yog Upanishad all the creatures
chant 21600 Hansa mantras. Inhaling with Ha and ex-
haling with So. But the practitioner knows that reverse
of this becomes So and Ham, i.e., Soham. This is devo-
tion through chanting of mantras. According to
Hansopanishad the practitioner experiences ten types
of sounds with the help of this devotion. These sounds
provide him with theological knowledge and he attains
liberation.
Devotion through concentration: Focusing on
mind with the help of Shambhavi Mudra is devotion
through concentration. In this Yog, the practitioner tries
to focus on the tip of the nose or any point of anything
through closed internal eyes. He tries to concentrate
his mind on it. This is known as Tratak. The practitioner
is able to gather his fragmented thoughts and mental
strength. when all the strengths are collected then the
practitioner gets the knowledge of present, past and
future and he gets the knowledge of actions, worship
and knowledge. Practitioner can astonish everybody
with concentration of mind. The practitioner can see
the soul and supreme soul with concentrated mind and
attain liberation.
Hathyog: According to Shruti Smriti the united form
of Ida (Moon) and Pingla (Sun) nerves is Hathyog.
There are 72,72, 10, 210 nerves in the human body but
out of these Ida, Pingla and Sushmana are considered
to be very useful. Sushmana nerve is the actual path of
liberation. It is posited in the center of the body (slightly
above the groin and lower than navel). It passes through
all the chakras and reaches the Vishudh or throat chakra
and is divided into two paths. The western path passes
from backside of the neck through spine and reaches
the suture on the top of the head. The second path is
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 40
the eastern path that passes through the Agya chakra
and reaches the suture on top of the head. Sushmana
can select any one path out of these two but western
path is supposed to be suitable. Pranayam helps in the
flow of Sushmana through union of Ida and Pingla. This
energy flows in upward direction from root chakra to
the suture on top of the head. This is known as Hathyog.
Nadi shodhan, practice of various mudras, arousal of
kundalini, and other chakras is Hathyog.
Rajyog: Patanjali has mentioned in Yog Darshan
that overcoming five types of mental conditions is
Rajyogrnfraf-r ftr.' in other words, regular
practice of Rajyog helps in self-realization and over-
coming the mental conditions. Patanjali has mentioned
eight branches of yoga: restraining passion, observances,
posture, controlling breath or pranayam, restraining sen-
sory organs, contemplation, meditation and deep medi-
tation. Truth, non-violence, not stealing other things, not
collecting unwanted things and celibacy are restraining
passion. Cleanliness, satisfaction, study of good litera-
ture, devotion and deep devotion towards god are the
five observances. Sitting in one position comfortably is
posture. Practice of rhythmic and regulated breathing
through inhaling and exhaling is pranayam. Pranayam
or regulation of breath is considered to be the most im-
portant devotion. Restraining sensory organs mean sur-
rendering the sensory organs to the mind. When the
practitioner reaches this stage then the external condi-
tions of the practitioner become inactive and he gets
knowledge. Focusing the mind on the chakras is con-
templation. This leads to meditation and deep medita-
tion. Concentration of mind towards our goal is medita-
tion and the final stage of meditation is deep meditation
or Samadhi. When the practitioner is able to achieve
this stage through meditation and concentration on goal
he attains meditation with contemplation of idol and
without contemplation of idol and finally attains libera-
tion.
Rajyog is considered to be the best among all the
four devotions mentioned above. However the practi-
tioner can adopt any one depending upon his condition
and practice it regularly with determination and dedica-
tion to attain liberation.
The person who performs mental work in ex-
cess of his capacity suffers from poor memory. Be-
sides the person also complains of mental weariness,
indigestion, physical weakness, poor memory, fever,
brain related diseases at the time of birth, long sick-
ness etc. Poor memory could also be due to anemia.
Symptoms: The person starts forgetting things
very quickly. He fails to remember the said thing in
spite of efforts. He forgets what he has written or
read. Sometimes he also fails to recognize familiar
persons.
Yogic treatment: Yogic actions strengthen the
brain and improve the memory power and helps in
relieving this condition through natural ways.
Padmasana should be practiced regularly. This is
the best asana for concentration. It helps in the con-
centration of mind and brain and increases digestive
fire. It is beneficial to relieve vata related diseases.
Vajrasana should be practiced regularly in order
to overcome playfulness of mind. It is a meditative
pose.
Shashakasana should also be practiced regularly
in order to overcome brain related problems, mental
diseases, stress, anger, irritability, anger and improves
memory power.
Shavasana should be practiced for five to ten
minutes daily in order to improve health. it gives com-
plete rest to body, mind, brain and soul. it helps in
gaining strength, happiness and the person remains
cheerful.
The patient depending on his or her physical con-
dition should practice Surya Namaskar. Surya
Namaskar helps in maintaining overall health.
Shirshasana or Sarvangasana should also be prac-
ticed regularly to provide pure blood to the body, which
prevents diseases related to eyes, nose, ear etc. it
increases memory power, intelligence and grasping
power.
Regular practice of Bhastrika, Kapalbhati, and
Anulom-Vilom overcome brain related problems and
improve memory power.
Chanting Om removes all types of brain related
problems. Brahmari pranayam overcomes playful-
ness of mind, controls mental stress and improves
memory power.

ON THE OCCASION OF 125
TH
EMANCIPATION DAY OF SAGE DAYANAND
Late. Shri Arvind
Translator : Acharya Abhyadev
There is one man amongst those
greatest people whom the future
generation would remember for the
renaissance of India. That person
has unmatchable and unique quali-
ties, a person who can be clearly
noticed even amidst several people
and he has his own style. This re-
minds us of a mountain range, all the
mountains appear to be low or high
but they all are of same shape and
size and green in colour. One of the
mountains could be higher and more
attractive but its height is not clearly
visible to the eyes. But there is a
mountain amidst these, which is ab-
solutely distinguishable. As if the
whole strength has stood up in the
form of an idol, a group of moun-
tains strong and stable are high, there
is one tall tree on this green moun-
tain, which appears to be talking to
the sky, pure, strong and fertile wa-
ter stream is gushing out from the
land, which is probably the source
of water not only for the entire val-
ley but also a stream of health and
life. This image of Mahirishi
Dayanands personality has a last-
ing impression on my mind.
It was the land of Kathiawad (a
region in Gujarat) that gave birth to
this great, powerful, reformer and
pioneer of new age. It appears that
a part of that lands own nature, its
soul has entered into his soul, the
mountains of Girnar, its part, the
strength of that ocean and thunder-
ing, which makes a loud noise and
collides with the horizons of this land,
some part of the humanity of that
land, which is absolutely pristine,
pure and unpolluted and appears to
be made of unique element, the hu-
manity which is beautiful and strong,
enlightened with the vital life energy
of newness.
When I try to describe my feel-
ings on Dayanand and the lasting im-
pression on my mind and when I try
to give a form to my thoughts then I
start from that persons life, his work,
and finally realize myself, these are
the two qualities which clearly dif-
ferentiate him from his contempo-
raries and friends. Other great Indi-
ans moulded themselves into spiri-
tuality of one sort of cast and helped
in the making of India. Mahirishi
Dayanand found spiritual solace in
a type of undetermined and movable
fluid, which would one day become
stable and take birth in the form of a
great site of nature. He gave the
strength of shapeless movement and
upheaval, which invariably had to
include two actual forms. They will
be remembered as two great souls
and great personalities, which reside
in the soul of India. They are within
us and we would not have been what
we are today without them. But we
cannot say definitely by looking at a
shape that this was the form which
the person was devoted to, it is ex-
tremely difficult to say that this was
the shape, which is the actual idol of
that soul.
The working style of Dayanand
was completely different from oth

ers. He was a man who had devoted himself on a
shapeless form in an undetermined soul. But it was like
a lasting impression on the things and people, just like
the impressions made on bronze coins. He was the man
whose positive works were like his children taking birth
from his soul (like body), strong and healthy children
full of vital life energy, resembling their father in every
way. He was a man who was absolutely clear in his
mind and knew his work for which he was sent on earth,
who had seen the world with the divine authoritative
foresight of god and selected his materials of devotion.
He had determined his place and later translated his
concepts and thoughts into actions like a born powerful
expertise worker. When I think of the idol of this hard
working person made in the factory of God then a num-
ber of pictures float in front of my eyes, all the pictures
are related to fights, victories and Herculean tasks. Then
I say to myself that this soldier holding divine light, war-
rior of the world of god, the artisan who has carved the
human beings and institutions, and fearless, bold winner
who faces all the challenges of the nature. If I would
sum up all these things then there is a very strong im-
pression on my mind and that is of spiritual practicality.
In general perception these two are entirely opposite to
each other, combining these two words and speaking is
like defining Dayanand.
The work, which he has done, what was the actual
form of that work? If we overlook this aspect then also
the fact remains that he has worked with the same feeling
and with the same purpose, it gives an unmatchable
place amongst our great founders. He reestablished the
ancient culture in national character. These are those
facts, which clearly tell us about Dayanand, which in
my view distinguish him from others. This is the second
special quality of Dayanand, which is the secret of the
first quality. We live in the stream of others influences
and we allow those to come inside our circle of influ-
ence and mould ourselves according to them, in this
process some things take shape and a small amount of
work appears from it, the rest get fragmented and flows
into the stream of influences. We are not determined as
to which direction should we follow, and we follow the
path depending upon the conditions and situations. When
we take a decision not to fight or compromise at that
time also we are actually opportunists. Dayanand
grasped everything that came into his mind, he contem-
plated it within his mind, gave a shape to it with his
expertise, which according to him was appropriate for
taking a final shape and then he considered it to be
proper. The youngness and aggressive qualities that we
see in Dayanand was a part of the strength of his self-
determination.
He not only bowed down in front of the nature but
also he also established his strength and authority to
use the life and nature also like yielding materials. We
can imagine that he is stretching his hands towards us
after seeing the deficient masculinity and hardworking
nature and saying, Oh Indians! Do not be satisfied by
leading with uncertain feelings and living in unlimited
feelings. Look what the god wants to say to you, look
into his light of inspiration and see what he wants to
make you, and determine as to what you want to be-
come. Mould yourself looking at him and mould him in
your life. Be thoughtful person, but also implement those
thoughts, be a devotee of god but also be the devotee of
nature. Because he was the one who was complete,
he was a man in whose soul resided the god, whose
eyes had the power to mould different shapes out of
life according to divine eyesight. The word moulding
is absolutely fitting because he was himself a big moun-
tain, and he had made dents in those huge rocks and
gave shape to different things.
We also see a strong flow of spiritual practicality
from his life. There is a certain and potent impression
of his work on all directions. We see in the beginning
that practicality is a divine impression of inner sight and
then he reached directly to the origin of culture and
Indian life. He then obtained the seed coming out of the
first flower for the sake of taking birth. It was indeed a
work of great intelligence that he propagated the Vedas
of this religious text, which had become deformed due
to the meanings interpreted ignorantly. The original pur-
pose was lost and people had perceived them as some
garbage or articles of some tribal societies. Dayanand
recognized the actual superiority of the Ved that they
are religious books, which had the strong and deep feel-
ings of our ancestors who wanted to build this nation, a
code, which was full of knowledge, and discussions on
worship and divine works.
Nationalistic does not imply getting stagnated at one
place. On the other hand, actual renaissance and re-
construction is to grasp the potential strength of mis-
takes and mould it into the present stream. Dayanands
task used to bring back such elements and thoughts of
past in order to give them a shape in the present. He in
fact grasped the past works in his present work, which
were in the form of first flow of pure strength, they are
pious as they are coming directly from the original mas-
ter, they are closer to the suitable element, which is
permanent and has the ability to do something new ev-
ery time.
Truth is a very simple thing yet difficult. Truth is the
main mantra for Vedic foundation, truth in the soul, truth
in the sight, truth in the desires and truth in action. Truth
in action is an internal purity and strong truth is ex-
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 43
pressed through heart, clarity and speech and actions, it
was inborn in ancient Aryan culture. It is the secret of a
pure and undistorted strength and symbol of the fact
that the man has not deviated too far from nature. These
are the sons of god, proof of being his true sons. This
was the impression that Dayanand had left behind and
this should be the symbol and idol of that person who
initiates some work and can be recognized in that form.
God should bless us so that that pure thought,
undistorted, untransformed form should work in India
again and give it to us again, which is very important in
our lives in other words pure strength, highest level of
clarity, deep insight, foresight, expertise and authorita-
tive truth of superior order.
Dayanand and Ved
Dayanand accepted Ved as the strong rock of foun-
dation. He believed the Ved to be the guide of his life,
rule of his internal power and source of inspiration for
his external work. Not only that, he considered it to be
the promise of permanent truth which would be utilized
by the man to attain the knowledge of god and can
make it the strong and suitable basis to establish rela-
tions towards himself and his fellow citizens. But on the
other hand people say that such permanent phase of
Ved does not exist at all. It also contains dust and sand
that is found at other places. What does Vedas contain
except the songs of ancient shepherds? It is an ugly
worship of some imaginative figure based on natural
incidences. It can also be said that it contains semi-
religious, semi-magical poems that are sung in rituals,
such poems were read by superstitious people of an-
cient times and they used to expect that they would
obtain gold, food and animals, that they would be able
to destroy their enemies mercilessly, that they could
protect themselves from diseases, miseries and royal
punishments and in this way enjoy the material com-
forts of this world. Here we have to add a third thought
related to Ved along with these two. In this thought do
we see any definition of low level with reference to
Ved? Is it because of this that this initial disturbing thing
was considered to be a religious classic and a pious
book on yagna of superior and highest order?
What are Vedas actually? This is not just a question
related to only wisdom but it is a very important ques-
tion. It is important not only because we can assess the
work of Dayanand fairly well but also because we will
be able to understand our mistakes and be able to de-
fine the factors responsible in making our future. When
a nation develops itself in the form that it has to become
in the future then it does so on the basis of its past and
present and in this course there are phases where there
is need to study the consciousness and unconscious
aspect. Whereas the nationalistic feeling elects what-
ever he has obtained in the past or is obtaining in the
present, changes its form, leaves some of these and
secures some, with the approach that what will he re-
quire in the form of capital and material for his future
tasks and development. We are also in this type of in-
vestigation of time and Dayanand was one of the wise
and great souls of that time. However, Ved is the most
holy material of all things of the past and is the most
powerful either directly or indirectly. But, people had
stopped understanding the purpose of Vedas, whereas
the Vedic traditions had almost disappeared in the veil
of mythological covers and colours. At that time also
people hardly understood the meaning of Vedas but they
were respected, they were worshipped in the form of
authentic books of all truth, original source of all orders,
books of divine knowledge and dependable scriptures.
But there has been a double standard and mutual
unrelated concept that Vedas are Holy Scriptures of
worldly actions and that Vedas are books of divine
knowledge. Brahmins accepted the first concept as the
basis while Upanishads accepted the second concept.
The Brahmins accepted the Vedas as the books of
worldly affairs and rituals and started searching for other
scriptures to obtain the knowledge of god. But the caste
continued to yield in front of Veda due to sheer inspira-
tion; it kept the highest tradition of Veda in unique form
in its unclear memory. When in this age the Vedas were
unveiled from the long lasting controversies then the
same incident reoccurred. Today it appears that the
western scientists have put the Vedas in the category
of books of worldly actions and rituals and as holy books
sang in praise of natural god, while on the other hand
Dayanands eyes could clearly see that Ved is the di-
vine truth granted to the mankind and a source of divine
knowledge. Whatever it is, we will have to select any
one of the two concepts said for Vedas. It cannot be so
that we wrap the Ved in the layers of ignorant respect
for long time or keep it very safe like a pious thing in the
veil of religious self-degradation. Either we have to con-
sider Ved on the lines of science and believe it to be
books of songs sang in praise of god and worldly ac-
tions which do not have any live truth or strength for
thoughtful people and leave them behind or consider
Ved as what the western scientists believe and then we
will have to store the Vedas as historical archives in the
form of some half-true and uncivilized worship of some
caste. There is another aspect, we can also believe that
Vedas are actual Vedas, books of divine knowledge and
then the top priority for us would be to know about the
Vedas and listen to its message.
Some times questions are raised that the meaning of
Vedas interpreted by Dayanand are not correct, it is an
own creation based on imaginary knowledge and clev
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 44
erness. His style is criticized that he lacks lucidity
and writes as per his wish and his interpretation is not
acceptable as a universal argument. Those who claim
that Vedas are divine knowledge they are told that the
thought of divine knowledge is superstition, which the
world has left, which cannot be accepted by a knowl-
edgeable person or cannot be declared with truth. Here
I will not judge the correctness of the interpretation of
Vedas as per Dayanand, I will also not do any forecast
on the future opinions that would be made on his inter-
pretation, and I will also not begin a debate on the topic
of his divine knowledge. Here I will simply describe the
detailed principle as they appear in front of me, which
are based on Dayanands interpretation of Vedas. The
reason being that whatever main quality, thought or feel-
ings arise out of the work of a great soul or great per-
son is not what form or shape it has given, but what did
the human generation achieve in this short time, what
additional strength it could express or what additional
truth he has added through its thoughts or let us say
what it regained in a very short time.
The critics of Dayanand should first see his work
and then think about those who criticize him that
Dayanand has interpreted the Vedas on the basis of
cleverness and some imaginary things? This is not de-
scent on the part of at least those who favour science
and have accepted its traditional meaning. The reason
being that if it is said that the original text has been
manipulated in order to establish forcible equality with
the help of imaginary principles in the form of freedom
to expression or cleverness that can be noticed in the
form of justice, a written interest and innocent analyti-
cal and relative investigation, direct sight and to an ex-
tent that he has severed the relationship with simple
ordinary understanding then it is definitely this feeling.
However the narration given by Acharya Sayan is very
effective, very useful as an initial source, very knowl-
edgeable and a work of hard labour. But such allega-
tions appear to be normal who understand the final re-
sults of the efforts made by European scientists in the
recent times. The reason being that if anybody has done
the interpretation of Vedas, which leaves more and more
space for intellectual cleverness, which readily accept
the doubtful directions in the form of definite evidences,
in which the negligible evidences have been removed
boldly, in which great difficulties have been overlooked
and very easily and the main and universally accepted
directions of the original book in spite of being against it
and furnished the imaginary bias then it is certainly this
effort, although the long term efforts of European Vedic
scientists throughout the century is certainly respect-
able from the point of view of its strength of research,
freedom and efforts.
What is the main emotional point on which we have
to thing? The success or failure of any narration of Veda
depends on the fact that what is the center of religion
as propounded by Veda and to what extent the internal
evidence of Veda strengthens it. The approach of
Dayanand is clear in this matter. Its basis is unbreak-
able, unmovable. Songs of only one god have been sung
in Vedas, in different names, in several such names
which have been used and have been used after care-
ful thinking with this purpose and objective that to de-
scribe the different qualities and strengths. Was
Dayanands interpretation his own story, which was
presented with his own clever imaginary power? Not
at all, the following is the original clear verse from Veda

q = fr rrr f-a
=f n nraftrrnrr.
It means the learned people (not ignorant) talked
about one and only one truth in different names, they
call it fire, god of death (yam) etc. in the beginning of
this verse it has been said that he is known as Indra,
Varuna, friend and guru. Therefore the sages of Vedic
period knew more about their religion. It can be said
that they knew more than Routh or Maxmuller. The
first mantra is as follows:
;-) fnr =rnfnrr. =r f. = =rr n=-nr
q = f r r rr f-a =f n nraftrrnrr .
We know that how do modern scientists save them-
selves after manipulating this evidence. They say that
the above-mentioned Ved mantra is a prior creation. It
is a great thought, which has been expressed with such
clear strength, this was raised in the minds of Aryans
later but this never came into the mind of the people
who worship fire, sun, sky, but they took it from the
Dravidian enemies having civilized and philosophical
mentality and accepted it later. But we do find the man-
tras and texts from Veda, which agree with this thought.
Fire, Indra or any other lord has been described in the
books in such a manner that they are with all other
lords. Fire keeps the strengths of all other lords within
it. All the lords have been addressed with one name or
has been normally seen, each lord has been classified
as king of the world or father of the world, which are
generally given to only lord. But the Europeans will say
that this cannot have this meaning, should not be and
cannot be that Vedas talk about worship of god. They
will frame some other word for this and say that this is
henotheism and they will imagine that the Vedic sages
did not consider fire or Indra as actual lord. They be-
have with any lord or with every lord normally and prob-
ably because they believed that the lords would feel
that they are being praised and listen to this exagger-
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 45
ated devotional songs then why not consider the basis
of Vedic thought as monotheism, why do we require
this new dangerous henotheism? We need it because
the primitive people could not reach to this great height
and even if think that they had reached that great height
then it will spill water on the principles of chronological
conditions of human progress through development. It
will also destroy the thoughts, which we have on the
position of human civilization of Vedas in history and
the objective of Vedas. Truth should hide itself, ordi-
nary thinking should also not become an obstacle and
move to one side so that their theory is able to prosper.
This is the meaning. I want to ask here, especially on
this subject and this is strong-based issue that who is
straightforward here Dayanand or European learned
people?
If Dayanands view is accepted and also the form
which the Vedic sages have given to their lord then we
will be forced to believe that whenever we come across
the description of fire or any other lord in the book then
we will notice that there is one supreme lord posited in
the thoughts of sages behind that name. Then the whole
form of Veda would become definite in that meaning,
the meaning which Dayanand gave to the Vedas, it will
erode the narration of Sayan as just books of worldly
actions, songs in praise of god, it also erodes the Euro-
pean interpretation. We get the original divine classics
in its place, which are amongst the holiest books of the
world and a strong powerful divine speech.
The remaining Ved related subjects and interpreta-
tion of Dayanand is the logical result of this thought. If
the names of the lords are used to express the qualities
of god and it is these qualities which are worshipped by
the sages and the desires that they used to express on
their behalf then definitely the spiritual knowledge of
the nature of goddess and the relation of man with su-
preme soul should be included in the Vedas, it should
also contain the rules to be followed by men while go-
ing towards the god. Dayanand insists that a moral and
behaviour related element is included in the Veda. He
finds the rules of life in Vedas, which have been given
to the living creatures by the god. If the Vedic lords
express the strengths of the supreme soul , who is the
creator of this world, ruler and father then definitely the
Vedas should contain a big part on the world science
and the rules of world and nature. Dayanand stresses
on the fact that Vedas do contain world related topics.
He finds the secret of the creation of the world and the
rules of the nature, with which he rules on all sides of
the world.
Neither the western astuteness nor knowledge re-
lated to worldly actions have been successful in disap-
pearing spiritual and moral importance, but they both
are inclining towards reducing it in different parts due
to their own reasons. The western learned men reduce
it because they feel restless when they such thoughts
coming forcibly in the promises of ancient times, which
cannot be primitive, then they do not hesitate in leaving
behind their definitions at certain places which thy use
at other places and which they think is necessarily re-
lated to equal logical thinking and verbal conversation.
The reason being that if they use them at every place
then the Vedas prove such minute and serious thoughts,
which cannot be produced in the Vedic primitive minds
and their propriety. Sayan reduces the moral and spiri-
tual importance of this aspect of Veda because accord-
ing to him Vedic education is not used in day-to-day
behaviour, which could give moral and spiritual results,
but it is to be done with actions like yagnas, which could
give material benefits. The Vedas mention about Vedic
gods that they are lords of knowledge, strength and pi-
ousness, they are purifiers, they can remove unhappi-
ness and evil, they destroy sins and untruth, and are
warriors of truth. The sage prays them to relieve their
unhappiness, purify them and provide them with knowl-
edge and truth, asks them to hold them within divine
rules, to make them lookers of knowledge and truth, to
give them strength, valour, and power and to keep them
close to these positive strengths. Dayanand has not
brought out these thoughts of divine truth and religion
from somewhere outside. Vedas are like bibles and above
all they are the rules of the god.
The related factors mentioned in Vedas are very
clear. The sages always say that there are many worlds
and each has its code of principles or rules and also that
divine work processes function in the world. But
Dayanand goes ahead of this and says that true prin-
ciples of modern materialistic science are mentioned in
Vedic mantras. Here there is one basic principle about
which we can express logical doubt. I accept my inca-
pability that I will not be able to express any mixed
opinion with respect to this subject. But I would like to
say that todays progress of science with relation to
ancient world, is proving Dayanands thoughts. There
were several scientific secrets hidden in ancient civili-
zations , which have be obtained again by modern sci-
ence and have been expressed more elaborately, de-
tailed and rich manner, but it has not been able to unveil
several others secrets. Therefore there is not a bit of
imagination in this thought of Dayanand when he says
that Vedas contain the scientific factors along with reli-
gious truths. But I will also say that I belief that Vedas
do contain other truths of divine science, which the
present world does not contain at all. At that time
Dayanand did not describe much but slightly less about
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 46
the seriousness and scope of Vedic education.
Questions were raised on the method of language
and thought related topics, with which Dayanand used
to draw his conclusions especially when he uses the
names of gods. I definitely experience that it is our mis-
take to raise such questions. The reason for that mis-
take is that we start correlating the ancient language
and its use with language related modern thoughts. We
modern people use words like currency coins, which do
not evaluate its original meaning. When we talk about
something, that thing is there in our mind, the synonym
of that word is not there in our mind, words are lifeless
and meaningless for us, it is just a coin of prevalent
currency system, which has no value of its own. On the
contrary the word in ancient language was a live thing
inherent with its meaningful and factual strength. After
that the original meanings used to be remembered be-
cause they were used at that time, its strength of asset
used to be present in the mind of the orator. Today we
say, sheep and we remember that particular creature,
that meaning can be fulfilled with any other sound also
provided that sound has been used in the interpretation
of the meaning of that animal. In ancients times, people
used the phrase that which destroys and then that
meaning used to be present within their minds. We say
fire and we remember fire, this word is not useful to
us for any other thing. But ancient people had different
meanings for fire besides this and that was because
one or more meanings from original meaning were suit-
able for this external physical fire. Our words were
suitable for one or more external physical fire out of
these one or two meanings but their words were ca-
pable of giving a number of meanings. It was very easy
for them, if they thought like this then they could use
any one of the word like fire, wind or water for differ-
ent relations or complex thoughts in the form of a com-
bination of sounds and could have used it as a treasure
like word. There is no doubt that the Vedic sages had
reaped the benefits of the powerful language used in
Veda mantras. There is no doubt about the fact that
Dayanand did not have this benefit, which the Euro-
pean learned men got with the help of comparative study
of languages. Ancient undeclared meaning has some
problems, which the new science helps in completing it
even if it is full of flaws and we will have to use both
the sources of light in order to publish its meaning. In
spite of this it will have only detailed report of facts.
The basic principles of Dayanands interpretation are
unclear from this aspect. Detailed chronological descrip-
tion is the work of acumen and brilliance and generally
people have different opinions with respect to brilliance
and intellectual thoughts. Dayanand always supports
the great and strong decisions amongst all original prin-
ciples, which neglect intelligent actions with the help of
divine intuition. The elements propounded in Vedas,
through logic and arguments and with the increasing
knowledge towards the past subjects and mankind has
been proved to be true. Ved sings in the praise of the
supreme soul which is known in different names and is
to be possessing different strengths, Veda openly de-
scribes the divine rules and the desire of man to fulfill it,
Veda definitely has this objective that it gives us the
rules of the world.
I do not have enough space to write about divine
philosophy. It is enough to say that I fully agree with
Dayanand on this subject. It is indeed an act of ridicule
to put allegations on him and to say that he was not
true, because he believed in this principle and declared
it. If we want to understand the power even in one
fraction then we have always three basic existences,
which have to be accepted and we will have to under-
stand the mutual relations, these are god, nature and
soul. therefore as Dayanand had believed very strongly,
Vedas make us see god, rules of the nature, and nature
of the soul and also the relations towards god. Then
what else is it other than divine truth? And as Dayanand
believes that Vedas makes us see these with complete
truth, which is always pure and flawless then we can
definitely consider Veda as a pious holy book. The rest
is a question like the divine truth, our godly thoughts
with our caste, spirituality of human being and the ques-
tion of possibilities. Modern thought has accepted na-
ture and rules and overlooked the divine truth by over-
looking god. But in this way it has overlooked many
other things, and the modern thought is once again busy
trying to accept it. We cannot ask a great man that he
should start ruling some temporary believes of that time
or some values that have been gathered from different
places. The element of his greatness lies in the fact that
he looks at supernatural things, he looks into depth.
As far as the interpretation of Vedas is concerned, I
strongly believe that Dayanand would also be remem-
bered as the first discoverer of true verses of Vedas
(whoever might have done the last complete interpre-
tation). It was the foresight of Dayanand, with which
he eliminated the ignorance and darkness prevailing
from ancient times and saw the truth directly. He fo-
cused his sight at that point, which was very important.
He obtained the treasure of those doors, which were
closed by times and he broke open the seal from the
mouth of stagnant waterfall.

Jaishankar Misra Savyasachi
HOD & Asst. Editor, Patanjali Yogpeeth, Hardwar
sia, Colombo and other countries in
the disguise of an international busi-
nessman and spread his message
and finally came back to India via
Madras in 1926.
At that time Congress confer-
ence was being held at Guwahati.
But Shri Sahay did not attend it be-
cause he had traveled to different
countries and came back to this
place. So, there were chances of
being suspected if he had immedi-
ately attended the conference.
Therefore he decided to be aloof and
wait for the decision of the confer-
ence. He was again making plans
to go to Japan but at the same time
his marriage with Deshabandhus
sister Satisen was fixed in April 1927
and therefore he had to postpone his
travel plans for a few months.
He later planned his trip to Japan
in September 1927 and during his
visit he got the information that
Subhash Chandra Bose, a jail inmate
at Mandlay in Burma was seriously
ill and that he was sent to his home
in Calcutta (India). But Subhash
was not allowed to meet anybody.
Shri Sahay was very disappointed to
hear this news and went to Calcutta
along with his wife to visit Bose. He
sent a message and was called im-
mediately. Subhash talked for a small
while and said, We cannot expect
any independence from the western
countries. We can expect this in fu-
ture only from Japan and therefore
This incident dates back to 1921
when the whole nation witnessed the
non-cooperation movement of
Gandhi Ji. During that time, Anand
Mohan Sahay offered his services
for Indian Independence. He met
Netaji (Subhash Chandra Bose) for
the first time at Gaya, where he was
present as the personal secretary of
the then Congress President,
Deshabandhu Chittaranjan Das. It
is evident that Shri Sahay had close
relations with Deshabandhus fam-
ily and hence he was responsible for
the reception of Netaji. This was an
opportunity where Sahay and Netaji
met together for the first time. Dur-
ing this meeting, they discussed
about the methods to spread the
movement and some related sugges-
tions. Shri Sahay went to Japan in
1923. He stayed there for about 21
months and strengthened his move-
ment against the British. He pre-
pared different plans. During this
period, the slave citizens held a con-
ference at Nagasaki where it was
decided to bring the youth of all na-
tions under one roof to fight against
the foreign rule. The youth were try-
ing hard to come out of the slave
life. Shri Sahay was made respon-
sible for extending the plan of con-
ference to other nations, because he
had a valid passport. However, he
traveled to China, Malaya, Indone-
we should focus on Japan.
He took leave from Netaji and
reached Japan along with his family
in September 1927. After a few
months he opened a branch of Con-
gress in Japan in1928, which was
recognized by All India National
Congress Committee. He started the
publication of Voice of Asia, a
monthly magazine in 1930; he was
the publisher and editor of this maga-
zine. This was the first bilingual
magazine published in English and
Japanese. This magazine brought lot
of fame to Shri Sahay and also
helped him in extending his voice and
views to remote areas. Even then
he used to visit each and every vil-
lage to share his thoughts with the
people. He used to organize secret
meetings in temples and universities,
inspire intellectuals to participate in
movements and used to pass all the
messages to Subhash Bose in a very
clandestine manner. Meer Mubarak
and Meer Murtaza gave him ample
support in this process. They used
to work as assistants in ship. How-
ever, the patriotism of these two
brothers did not get any place in the
history.
By this time the British had es-
tablished a strong hold and Subhash
was finding it difficult to come out
of the clutches although it was not
impossible. He got a good opportu-
nity in 1939. He fled to Kabul in the
disguise of a Pathan and sent a mes

sage about going to Japan through
Japanese embassy. But the Japa-
nese were afraid of unveiling of this
secret and hence discarded his rec-
ommendation. Subhash was forced
to go to Germany at that time and
sent a message to Tokyo through
German embassy. Shri Sahay was
helpless even though he was will-
ing. Two people with same objec-
tive kept alive the flame of indepen-
dence in two different countries but
could not associate together at one
place.
The people of this country re-
member an adventurous brave man
as soon as they hear the name Netaji
Subhash. He first went to Germany
secretively and then to south East
Asia where he formed Indian Na-
tional Army. He was known as the
brave soldier of this army but his in-
dividuality was limited.
Bengal government had put him
under house arrest during Hall well
memorial protest in July 1940. He
escaped in January 1941 and
reached Berlin through Peshawar,
Kabul and Moscow. He met Hitler
in Berlin and talked about Indias
independence with Hitler. Subhash
Bose established a voluntary orga-
nization called Independent India
in January 1942 and majority of the
soldiers were Indian war prisoners.
He telecasted his speech regularly
from Berlin radio, which spread the
flame of independence movement in
Indians. The English, French and
Dutch capitalists failed in front of
Japanese Blitzkig competition in
1942 then Netaji felt that this was
the right time to jump into the inde-
pendent movement. He left for Ja-
pan in 1943 with the help of Japa-
nese and Germany soldiers and
reached Tokyo after three months
with great difficulty. From there he
reached Singapore on July 2, 1943.
After two days Ras Bihari Bose
handed over the responsibility of In-
dian independence movement going
on in south East Asia.
Indian National Army was for-
mally established on July 4, 1943 in
Singapore. Temporary Indian gov-
ernment was also established there
and Netaji was its president.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands were
also freed in December same year.
Indian National Army crossed the
boundaries of Burma in January
1944 and came to Indian land on
March 18, 1944. The independent
Islands Andaman and Nicobar were
renamed as Shahid and Swaraj.
When the soldiers stepped on their
motherland they were extremely
happy and kissed the motherland.
The brave Indian National Army
moved towards Kohima and Imphal.
The Indian flag was hoisted with slo-
gans and praise of Jaihind and Netaji
Zindabad. This scene was very
touching for the soldiers but at the
same time American fighter planes
bombarded Hiroshima and Nagasaki
and spread terrorism in the whole
world. Nuclear bombs forced the
Japanese soldiers to surrender and
the dream of Indian national Army
was also lost forever and they had
to move back. At a time when ev-
ery part of India was burning and
fighting against British government
Subhash Chandra Bose attacked the
British army from outside with the
help of 30 thousand soldiers trained
by him and tried to defeat them.
Japan was ready for the war and
declared war on December 8, 1941.
They attacked Pearl Harbour and
Singapore where the British ac-
cepted their defeat. A conference
was held at Tokyo on March 1, 1942,
which saw the participation from
India, Malaya, Thailand and Hong
Kong. Ras Bihari Bose was elected
leader unanimously. But Shri Sahay
boycotted that conference because
he wanted Subhash Bose to be the
leader but he was in Germany at that
time.
A conference of Indians was or-
ganized in Bangkok in June 1942 and
Ras Bihari invited Shri Sahay to at-
tend that conference. He could not
refuse that invitation and unaware
that his dream is going to come true
in that conference. A recommenda-
tion was passed in the same confer-
ence to call Subhash Bose from
Germany and elect him as the leader,
but the Japanese did not take the
initiative to call him. As a result, In-
dian National Army that was formed
with great difficulty destabilized as
Ras Bihari Bose could not prove his
leadership.
The failure of INA was a big in-
cident of that time, which had proven
a tough nut to crack even for the
Japanese and finally they agreed to
call Subhash Bose from Germany.
Meanwhile, India started the Quit
India Movement on August 9, 1942.
It was indeed a great opportunity to
defeat the British. Had Netaji come
to Singapore at that time then attack
on British was definite and probably
the date of Indian independence
would have been August 1942 in-
stead of 1947. But this could not be
possible due to negligence on the part
of Japanese.
Subhash Bose reached
Singapore on August 4, 1943 and
accepted the leadership of the free-
dom struggle and reestablished INA.
Provisional government of indepen-
dent India was established on Octo-
ber 29, 1943. Shri Sahay was made
the secretary general in the cabinet
meeting. A war was declared against
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 49
the British and America in the first
cabinet meeting. Meanwhile Japan
had invaded Andaman and Nicobar
Islands. In this situation Shri Sahay
made an attempt to get back the part
of motherland. He told the Japa-
nese, Both the Islands belong to
India therefore they should be given
back to us so that Indian national gov-
ernment can work on its land. The
Japanese were speechless on this
proposal because they were afraid
of losing their security. After lot of
thinking an agreement was made
according to which the law and or-
der of the Islands was under the
Japanese and the civil administration
was handed over to Indian national
government.
Shri Sahay signed the agreement
along with Netaji and flew from
Singapore to Andaman and reached
there in the evening. They hoisted
their flag on December 30, 1943 and
celebrated independence. However
the real goal was still to be achieved.
Therefore, they left to Bangkok on
the morning of December 31, 1943
and from there to Rangoon. When
the Indian national government set
up its headquarters in Rangoon and
30 thousand Indian soldiers were de-
ployed at India and Burma border.
Colonel Chatterjee, Mohd. Khan and
Anand Mohan Sahay formed a
strong team in Rangoon. It needs to
be mentioned that the army went up
to three kilometers from Imphal to
Chamol. Shri Sahay was moving
with the army at that time.
Shri Sahay remembered the past
and narrated it a few years before
his death, Our army had taken hold
of the British army. But it started
raining and the rivers swell leading
to floods. The roads were blocked
and there was a fear of being at-
tacked by the enemies. Therefore
we were forced to come back to
Rangoon. In this way, the INA
could celebrate its victory over en-
emies in spite of being so close to it.
He was tired of wandering from one
country to another for 25 long years
and fighting against the British.
Above all he was missing Netaji
very badly and meanwhile the In-
dian freedom struggle was on its full
swing in the country. India finally got
its independence on August 14, 1947
under the leadership of Mahatma
Gandhi and Indian government was
formed. The Indian government ab-
sorbed Shri Sahay for external af-
fairs based on his experience. Mean-
while he stayed in West Indies,
Mauritius and other countries. He
was sent as Council General to
Hanoi in 1954. He went to Bangkok
as Ambassador in 1956. He resigned
from ministry of external affairs in
1960 and involved in the construc-
tion of higher secondary school for
girls. He bid farewell to the world
on February 13, 1991.

The people who perform sacrificial fires say
several things in support of rituals, customs but Angira
sage says that such sacrificial fires, rituals are not
stable, they are very unstable. This is conservative-
ness, ignorance and it is not superior. Those who
believe in this kind of conservative methods and
assume to be happy go closer to death and misery
every moment.
(What are the 18 types of actions mentioned under
yagna or sacrificial fire? Brahma, the person who
chants mantras, the person who performs the yagna
and those who give offerings in the sacrificial fire are
part of yagna. Each has three supporters each, in this
way there are total 16 people performing the yagna
with four pairs. Apart from these 16 the owner and
his wife added make it 18. This is about the universe.
The sage says that the actual yagna is taking place
within the vital life energy, in spirituality and the body.
Mind replaces the Brahma in this yagna and speech is
in place of the mantras. (Chandogya 4-15)

Who does actual good deed? The person who is calm,
who takes alms and leads a life in the forest under aus-
tere conditions and remains devoted becomes free from
all impurities and reaches the door where only people
of good qualities live.
Sun represents purity. Any other thing can contain
certain amount of impurity but not Sun. Those who be-
come pure physically, mentally and from within walk on
the path of supreme purity apart from sun. They reach
god with the help of this path. They do not have any
attachment for anything in the world. They are far from
yagna, donations and other acts of virtues (perceived)
remain attached to the world, they never become pure.
They are able to lead a worldly life but never obtain
nectar. In this context the Sun path can also mean up-
ward path or path of progress.
Chandogya describes about the paths of lords and
ancestors. Sun path is divine path. According to the
theologist, the heaven is in the north of earth. When the
sun moves to the north of the earth that period is con-
sidered to be auspicious for leaving this world (death).
It is believed that the soul reaches the heaven.
Upavasanti Aranye, means the spiritual people do not
go and live in forests but focus on the two centers of
Sahasrar chakra. As per the Upanishad 8-5-3, the mean-
ing of Aranyay has been explained as two oceans, namely
Ara and Nya.

The happiness and comforts obtained from dona-

make the Brahmans develop detachment from worldly

Dhouti, Vasti, Neti, Tratak, Nouli and Kapalbhati are
being described here for the benefit of Yog practitio-
ners. A person willing to expertise Yog should practice
these processes regularly.
NETI
Intake of different kinds of fluids through nose is
called Neti.
Types of Neti: there
are five types of Neti
Jalneti, Sutraneti,
Dhritaneti, Telneti,
Dugdhaneti.
Jalneti: Add 10 gm
rock salt in one-liter wa-
ter and heat lukewarm.
Fill it in the Neti pot.
Morning time is ideal for the practice of Jalneti. It can
be practiced both in the morning and evening in case of
illness. Breathe in the water through right nostril. Open
the mouth slightly and breathe through mouth. The wa-
ter will come out from left nostril automatically. Repeat
the process from the other nostril. If the person does
not have cold and catarrh complaint then salt less cold
water can also be used for the practice. People suffer-
ing from cold and catarrh should use hot water mixed
with salt while those who do not have phlegm problems
should use lukewarm water and then switch to normal
water. Neti process relieves cold and catarrh but some
people suffer from vomiting due to Neti. Kapalbhati
should follow this process
so that the water accu-
mulated inside can come
out, which also cures cold
and catarrh.
Sutraneti: A cotton
rope (thin soft rope) is
known as Sutra, which is
used for this process.
Soak the cotton rope in
water before putting it in
the nostril. Bend it slightly at the edge so that the sutra
can be inserted into the nostril easily. Insert the sutra in
the right nostril slowly and remove it with the help of
hand when it reaches the mouth.
Note: 4 or 5 number catheter can also be used in the
absence of cotton rope. Sutraneti could lead to mild pain
in the nostril and throat. Therefore Dhritaneti or Telneti
should follow it.
Dhritaneti: Sit on a chair or bed and bend the head
slightly backwards. Now pour eight to ten drops of luke-
warm clarified butter in both the nostrils with the help
of a dropper or teaspoon. Telneti is also done in the
same manner. Intake of milk through nostril is called
Dugdhaneti. This Neti is done when the practitioner
Jalneti
Sutraneti
; YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ; 52
becomes expert in the practice of
Jalneti. There is one difference, in case
of Dugdhaneti, the milk is not removed
through mouth unlike Jalneti. Instead the
milk is taken inside.
Benefits: According to Yog Pradipika, Neti
purifies the brain, improves eyesight, cures

Neti is effective in curing cold and catarrh and is
also beneficial in case of eye diseases, graying of hair,
headache and other problems. Neti is not meant just for
cleaning the nostrils but also to protect the phlegmatic
membrane from pollution, dust particles, smoke, heat,
cold, bacteria and other germs. Some people have very
sensitive phlegmatic membrane, which gets affected due
to external conditions and causes allergy. Neti reduces
this sensitivity and cures all these problems. some people
suffer from sinusitis, Neti can cure this condition also.
DHOUTI:
This process is beneficial for the purification of stom-
ach. Dhouti means
washing. There are four
types of dhouti, namely
Vaman, Gajkarini,
Vastra dhouti and danda
dhouti.
Vaman dhouti:
Method: this pro-
cess should be done af-
ter finishing the morning
chores. Add a little bit of
salt in one or two liters
of lukewarm water and drink as much as possible. Bend
forward making 90-degree angle and insert the two
middle fingers inside the mouth so that they touch the
end of the tongue. The water comes out automatically
when the fingers are inserted in this manner. Those who
have complaint of reddishness in eyes should not do it
forcefully. Do not bend more than 90 degree and keep
the feet together. This is also known as Baghi kriya.
Benefits: Dhouti removes the kapha,
pitta and undigested food present in the
stomach. People suffering from phlegm
related problems, breathing problems,
asthma should practice this. The practice
should be reduced with improvement in the
condition. Polluted pitta can be removed with
the help of vaman dhouti in case of fever. It causes
perspiration and brings down the temperature. It also
overcomes giddiness. Vaman dhouti should be practiced
once a week.
Gajkarini or Kunjal kriya:
The only difference between Vaman dhouti and
Gajkarini is that the water comes out slowly at intervals
whereas in the second case it comes out all at once.
Gaj means elephant. An elephant fills it trunk with wa-
ter and throws it out like a shower, this process is also
done in this manner, hence the name Gajkarini.
Method: Drink as much water as possible. Bend
forward at an angle of 90 degrees. Contract the throat,
mouth and neck and inhale like Ujjayi. Push in the air
inside the stomach just like water taken in gulps. Con-
tract the stomach, this helps in pushing out the water
like a shower. You can also put slight pressure on the
left side of the stomach.
Benefits: As mentioned under dhouti.
Vastra dhouti:
Method: Take a cloth measuring 22 feet long and
three inches wide, fold
it in round shape and
keep it in boiled water
for four to five minutes.
Sit in squat position and
keep one edge of the
cloth on the tongue.
Now swallow the cloth
along with the saliva just
as we eat food. Drink
little water in between
so that the water enters
inside the stomach easily. This will cause vomiting sen-
sation in the beginning. Close the mouth when this sen-

sation occurs. Take in three to four feet
cloth in the beginning. You will be able to
swallow the entire cloth with regular
practice. After swallowing in the cloth
two Uddiyan bandh and Dakshina Naouli
twice or thrice. After Naouli kriya remove
the cloth slowly. If the cloth gets stuck up while
removing then swallow it again and remove it again.
Wash it nicely with mild soap and dry it.
Precautions:
Do not press the cloth with teeth while swallowing
the cloth.
Keep at least one foot cloth outside to remove it
later.
Remove the cloth after 20 minutes of swallowing it
otherwise the cloth could reach the intestines and start
digesting. This could be harmful. Therefore remove the
cloth after 15 to 20 minutes irrespective of the length of
the cloth swallowed.
People suffering from sour belches or ulcers etc.
should not practice this kriya.
Benefits:
Vastra dhouti removes the phlegmatic covering
present on the stomach tissues, it increases digestive
juices and thereby appetite.
It is beneficial for patients suffering from phlegm. It
is also beneficial in case of stomachache and indiges-
tion.
Danda dhouti:
Method: Take a soft rubber pipe measuring six mm
wide and three feet long. Sterilize it with hot water to
make it disinfectant. Rub one edge of the pipe on stone
Patanjali Yog committee, Chittorgarh (Rajasthan) has won the award in the field of envi-
ronment for its best work. It was awarded the Forest conservator district level award on
the Independence Day celebration. District Collector, Rao Rajesh Singh accepted the award,
citation letter on behalf of the committee. Subhash Sharma co-ordinator of this committee
gave this news.

that has to be inserted into the mouth. Drink
lukewarm water containing salt. Drink one
or two glasses depending on strength.
Bend forward and place the pipe inside
the mouth and swallow it so that the edge
touches the stomach. The other edge
should be hanging outside. The water comes
out automatically due to siphon process as soon as the
pipe touches the stomach. Throw out all the water.
Precautions: Stretch the pipe and check it before
inserting it inside the stomach otherwise there is a pos-
sibility of breaking inside the stomach.
Benefits: When faecal matter gets accumulated
on the glands secreting digestive juices then the diges-
tive juices are produced in little quantity. This process
cleans the respiratory walls and activates them which
removes the phlegm. It increases appetite and it is also
beneficial for patients of asthma. This process also re-
lieves the stiffness caused in respiratory pipes due to
asthma and prevents asthma attacks.

The main aim of systematic
practice of ancient healthy building
systems is to build a disease free and
healthy socieity. Pranayam helps in
the physical, mental and spiritual
development and cures all the
diseases in a human body.
Revered Swami Ramdev
addressed the yog practitioners and
said that nation can progress only
with the help of a disease free and
healthy society. He talked about the
importance of various asanas to the
practitioners present in the camp and
said that the human body is made
up of eight chakras out of which the
root chakra (Mooladhar) is the
center of strength
and the sacral
c h a k r a
( Swa d i s h t h a n )
produces the
strength. He said
that the solar plexus
(Manipur chakra) contains the divine
energy of the universe and body.
The heart chakra (Hriday) is full of
emotional feelings like empathy, pity,
love along with divinity. It creates
divine spirituality. The throat chakra
(Vishudhi) develops the different
essence in the physical body. The
chakra of time (Agyana) is the
center of knowledge and the crown
chakra (Sahasrar) is the center of
happiness. Swami Ji said that the
arousal of all the above-mentioned
eight chakras is pranayam.
Pranayam purifies the nerves and
the practitioner can arouse all the
chakras with the help of yog asanas.
According to him, regular practice
of pranayam can cure diabetes, high
blood pressure, throat and other
diseases without the use of
medicines.
Revered Swami ji Maharaj
cautioned the practitioners and said
that pranayam should be done very
carefully and regularly in order to
reap the maximum benefits. Wrong
method of pranayam could lead to
other problems. he said that the
practitioner gets spiritual favour
through thoughtless meditation. The
wisdom fills the mind of yogi with
all that is neither heard or written in
any classic. All the great saints like
Kabir, Goswami Tulsidas are saints
of this order who have not learnt the
mantras, Vedas from any religious
mentor or guru but have obtained this
eternal wisdom with meditation and
contemplation on the supreme soul.
they were able to understand true-
false, knowledge, science, and
auspicious-inauspicious, religion-
irreligion. They described the
meaning of all the classics in simple
words without reading the classical
scriptures and literature. The words
narrated from their mouths became
mantras and prose, which gave
knowledge to the entire world.
Swami Ji said that if we want to
make our children highly intelligent
and wise then they should be given
yog educaton along with training of
meditation. Meditation develops the
dormant knowledge lying inside our
brain.
Swami ji said that the sages and
seers used to teach meditation to the
celibates during student life itself.
Therefore yog and meditation is not
a knowledge that can be learnt only
in old age. If a person learns it during
young age helps in the all round
progress, maintaining good health
and being cheerful.
Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj says
that the body is the place for diseases
but this happens only when the
temple like body is not cleaned and
maintained properly.
Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj said
that medicines are not alone enough
to keep the body diseasefree but
regular practice of
yog is more
effective to lead a
healthy and
disease free life
instead of taking
medicines. Swami
ji said that the man
is busy collecting all the things of
comfort and luxury but he does not
have the time to take care of the body
which uses these things of comfort.
Swami ji said that religious works
and other worldly affairs can be
done only when the body is healthy
and free of illnesses. If the body is
not healthy then the accumulated
wealth and luxury will not provide
the happiness because the person
will not be able to enjoy them. Swami
ji said that the man can relieve
serious diseases only with the first
step of yog, namely pranayam. He
said that regular practice of
Bhastrika pranayam for five to ten
minutes helps in regulating
respiration and cure heart and lung
related diseases, which cannot be
cured even with the help of
medicines.
Nations progress is possible only with the development
of disease free society Swami Ramdev
Meditation can help in reaching the highest state of
knowledge
