SINGAPORE
Beguiling Singapore is a modern city - state embracing economic progress against the backdrop of age - old tradition. The customs that underpin community life are created out of a cultural mix that includes predominantly Chinese, Indian and Malay ethnic groups. Singapore is an island off the southern tip of Malaysia, linked to it by a causeway. It evolved from a sleepy fishing village in the early 1900s to become one of Asia's economic leaders. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles landed on Singapores northern bank in 1819 and felt that its location made it ideal as a trading station. From here Singapore's landscape was transformed by British colonial rule, Japanese occupation, Communist insurrection and finally, Independence. Since becoming a republic in 1965 the island has experienced increased prosperity and exponential Economic growth. Shimmering skyscrapers tower above the slick financial districts and elegant colonial buildings Preserve a lingering old-world charm. Passport/Visa Note: Travellers should hold confirmed documents and tickets for onward or return travel and enough funds to cover their stay. Male travellers with long hair are advised to tie their hair back on arrival. Women who are six months pregnant or more may be refused entry. All nationals, regardless of visa requirements, may be issued with a Social Visitor's Pass on arrival allowing for a stay of 14 or 30 days provided their visit is for touristic or business purposes. Extensions are possible for S$40, but the initial Pass is free. Passports must be valid for at least six months from date of arrival.

Major attractions
Chinatown Chinatown is set against the backdrop of Singapore's modern infrastructure and the prosperous financial district. It is a crowded and colourful network of streets and alleyways contained by Upper Pickering Street, Cantonment Road, New Bridge and South Bridge Road. The area is a receptacle of traditional Chinese customs that were carried by the communities in Chinese Junks from the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian to Singapore in the early 19th century. Temples, terraces, markets and shops still provide a glimpse of the old ways but much of its original character has been lost in the redevelopment of the past 30 years.

Little India The first Indian settlers arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles in the early 19th century, bringing with them colourful silks, aromatic spices, incense and other accoutrements of Indian culture. They worked on the roads and helped build the infrastructure of the city, settling within the ethnic enclave that has become known as Little India. The area is delineated by the north - south Serangoon Road, which runs parallel to Race Course Road. Its eastern end stretches to Jalan Besar. Sentosa Island The theme -park island is a popular weekend spot and one of the most visited attractions in Singapore. A day's excursion could turn into an overnight stay in any one of the hotels or camping sites. The island is enveloped by a high- speed monorail and linked to downtown Singapore by a 1,640ft (500m) causeway and cable car system. Entertainment ranges from soaking up the sun on the imported sand beaches to visiting a variety of entertainment areas. From a moving walkway one can experience the sea life of The Underwater World and Dolphin Lagoon. The Images of Singapore Exhibition explores Singapore's history in life- size dioramas. On the furthest western point of the island lies Fort Siloso from which Singapore guarded its territory against invading Japanese forces. Other attractions include the Merlion, the Musical Fountain and the Sentosa Luge. A distinctive landmark is the Carlsberg Sky Tower, Asia's tallest free- standing observation tower, which affords the best views of Singapore as well as breathtaking vistas across Sentosa and the Southern Islands, and even Malaysia and Indonesia on clear days. Singapore Climate and Weather Singapore's climate is mostly hot and humid with average temperatures ranging between 79F (26C) and 86F (30C) during the day with cooler temperatures at night. The wettest months are between November and January (the monsoon period); however rainfall occurs throughout the year. Rainstorms are usually short but heavy, so remember to take an umbrella.

How to get to the island?

The coolest but most expensive way is by cable car, followed by (in descending order of coolness and cost) ferry, taxi, bus, car and walking. In 2006 a light rail link to the mainland is set to open. No matter how you get there, you end up in the same place and admission is only S$2 more than whatever your transport cost. That S$2 covers entrance to the island and moving around on the monorail. Basic admission to the island will set you back $2 per person. There is an everchanging palette of combination tickets that may work out marginally cheaper if you plan to visit multiple attractions. The island is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, although many other attractions are not like this. The best way is in to take the North-East Line of the MRT to HarbourFront and then make your way to Level 3 of Vivacity, where you'll find the Sentosa.

Express monorail to the island. The train operates every 5-8 minutes from 7AM to 11:45PM daily, and a round-trip ticket costs S$3. The cheapest way though, is to take an SMRT bus for $2

Sentosa Island Transport System

Sentosa Island is one of the most popular tourist resort of the world and in order to attract tourists, better communication infrastructure is a must. No one would like to spend a holiday in a place which is not well connected with the city. Let us check out the present transport system status of Sentosa Island. The Singapore Cable Car provides an aerial link from Mount Faber of Singapore to Sentosa through the Keppel Harbour. It has got a significant historical connotation as it started in 1974 creating a world record. This was the first cable system of the world spread over a harbor. The second option is an advanced mode of transport of Sentosa Island, Sentosa Express. SG$140 million Sentosa Express monorail is now a pride of the land. The route is divided into four stations named as Sentosa, Waterfront, Imbiah and beach. Some important information should be given at this juncture about the Waterfront station. It is the second station that is located next to Resorts World. As par the plan, the Integrated Resort was completed in 2010 and that is located near the old ferry terminal. Sentosa Express is indeed a landmark in the history of transport of Sentosa Island as the total journey takes only 3- 4 minutes. Fortunately a single day Sentosa Pass allows unlimited rides to the travelers. The pass includes travel by the Sentosa Express, Sentosa Buses, Trams and admission fee into Sentosa. And one can get the pass from any one of the active station counters. Both the cash payments and payments through Internet and credit cards are allowed for the convenience of the tourists who may not like to carry heavy cash while they are on a tour. And the third option in the transport of Sentosa Island is the bus, the most common mode of transport. Blue, Yellow, Red and Green lines are running on the roads of Sentosa Island since 1998. Tram service is also on and you can take ride on the Beach Train for internal communication.

Why Singapore/ Sentosa? Singapore assails the senses of the first time visitor offering a vivid combination of modern and the ethnic cultures with a unique character of its own. Among Singaporeans the most popular reason to go to Sentosa is to hit the beaches: Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong from west to east respectively. All three are artificial. Siloso has a nice beach promenade full of clubs and restaurants, some rather noisy, while Palawan claims to be the southernmost point of continental Asia (if you count the bridge connecting Sentosa, and ignore any competing Malaysian claims). Tanjong, the quietest of the three, is the place for beach volleyball and also hosts the low-key beach club. Sentosa Island is a world class resort island offering a myriad of attractions and true to its Malay meaning Peace and tranquility. Singapore and Sentosa together make a complete holiday.
