Syllabus for Ph D ( Self Study) Course Work Subject: Combustion & Emission in Internal Combustion Engines Branch: Mechanical Engineering National Institute of Technology, Raipur, CG. 1. Introduction: An overview of engine development, Engine Configuration and components, Engine types and classification. Thermodynamic analysis of I C Engine, Air standard cycles, Fuel-air cycle, Actual Cycle, Variation between air standard cycle and actual cycle. 2. Combustion in S I Engine: General Combustion theory, Normal combustion and flame front propagation, factors affecting flame speed, Abnormal combustion, Engine operating variables affecting detonation, combustion chamber design, stratified charge engine. 3. Combustion in C I Engine: Ignition delay, knocking in C I Engine, Variable affecting ignition delay, Performance of C I Engine, Variables affecting C I Engine performance. General functions and characteristics of the combustion chamber. Basic designs of combustion chambers: Turbulent and Non-Turbulent type 4. Conventional & Alternative Fuels: Petroleum base liquid fuels, Petroleum Refining, General Fuel quality requirement, types of alternative fuel, Advantages and disadvantages of alternative fuels, performance of engine using alcohols, natural gas, LPG, bio-diesel, Di-methyl ether and Hydrogen. 5. I C Engine Emission, Measurement & Control: Types of emissions, Factors affecting engine emissions, Comparison of Diesel & Petrol emissions, Effect of different pollutants on human health & plant life, Measurement Techniques used to measure pollutants: Infra red absorption gas analyzer for measuring CO, Flame Ionisation Detector for measuring HC emissions, Chemiliminescence for measuring NO, Measurement of smoke using smoke meters ( Hartridge Smoke meter & Bosch Smoke meter), Oxygen Analyser, Control of emission from S I & C I Engine.
